Here's the deal -- although Hunan Ranch has fairly good food, their service is atrocious. Everyone has a bad day now and again, but the past few times I have been to Hunan I have sat for 3 to 5 minutes before even being acknowledged. No water. No menu. VERY shocked and disappointed. We have been customers at Hunan Ranch for over 5 years. Everyone at the restraunt has always been very nice in the past including the deliver drivers on man in particilar who always brought chopsticks for my 4 kids, that is how often we order, lol. So I was very shocked when I called to let them know a mistake was made on our order, same order we always order, and asked if they could swap out the dish we recieved by mistake. The person who identified herself as the owner "Amy" was incredibly rude and kept telling me that they delivered what I ordered. I twice nicely told her that it was not what I ordered and and asked if they could swap out the dish. Instaed of answering my question she insisted on telling me over and over that it is what I ordered. Sadly if that is the owner, we will never order from this place again. BE AWARE a loyal customer means nothing to the owner. Great people that work there but I would not give my money to someone who does not apprecaite it or admit when she makes a mistake. What happened? I've ordered takeout numerous times from Hunan Ranch and was usually satisfied with the quality, quantity and taste. I placed an order tonight for Crab Rangoons, fried rice and Happy Family entry. The crab rangoons were soggy and cold. The fried rice was burnt and the Happy Family was overcooked in a strange tasting brown sauce. After I tasted my meal a few more times I threw it all out. I opened the plastic wrapped fortune cookie and took a small bite. It was stale. I totally wasted $22.00 on this really bad Chinese food. I googled "best fried rice in the area" and this restaurant popped up. We arrive, ready to place our orders and I'm not exactly sure what was so funny to the TWO teenage-looking girls at the bar area (to place the order) but they kept looking at my husband and I and snickered. Needless to say, I wanted to slap them both but I refrained. I was once young, dumb and childish too, so I let them make it. We received our orders (shrimp fried rice and beef fried rice), I asked for more soy sauce and they said we had some in the bag. 2 packets of soy sauce for 2 LARGE boxes of fried rice. I asked for more. The look she gave me - well, um, maybe I asked for more soy sauce and it was a sin. She gave me 2 more packets. WTF ever... The fried rice was good, not great, I've indeed had better. But someone should replace those girls with a more professional person to take to-go orders. Thanks! read more

My husband and I went here Saturday for lunch, and we were pleasantly surprised! While a little pricey for a strip mall Chinese restaurant (we spent about $35 for 2 entrees, one bowl of soup, and three sodas), the portions were HUGE and delightfully ungreasy. We had the Garlic Chicken and the Sweet and Sour Chicken, both of which were delicious and cooked perfectly. The ambience was very nice and elegant, not at all kitschy like most Chinese restaurants in this price range. The greeter was friendly and especially nice to our little toddler son. If I had one complaint, it would be the service. While we were waiting to ask for refills or additional silverware, I noticed that the staff were chatting and/or texting rather than paying attention to the customers. One of our staples for to-go here in Avery Ranch. Love their spicy dumplings and General Tsao's. We were addicted to their Pan-Fried Noodles entree for years. We've ventured out since, but still return to it often. Their addition of a sushi menu made us happy campers -- wife often gets their Tuna Tartare as her meal. It's spicy, but great! Ordered take-out here. Was craving some American Chinese food, the greasy kind with copious amounts of MSG. This definitely satisfied that craving, especially on a lazy Friday, but it was far from good. It may have simply been the dish I ordered--Mongolian Beef with Wonton Soup, but the soup had broth that was simply gross, and the wontons, while meaty, were excessively doughy. To be fair, though, the broth wasn't really bad..it was just not your typical wonton broth. It was something like a weak miso with copious amounts of soy sauce. If that's your thing, you may very well enjoy it, but to me, it just didn't cut it. The beef, on the other hand, was considerably better, but still..meh. The meat itself was cheap, the cheapest type you can buy, but not bad. Fat and gristle were trimmed off, which is appreciated, and for the portion, it was worth the $10.50 spent on it. The price was slightly steep in terms of the overall flavor and quality of the dish, but I didn't feel ripped off or anything. The sauce was watery, salty, and slightly tart, different from the thicker, more savory sauce that is the norm for Mongolian. Like the Wonton, this dish was doused in soy sauce. The onions and green bell peppers were fine, but nothing extraordinary. A little undercooked, but that comes down more to personal preference. I like my veggies softer when I get them cooked. The fried rice was satisfactory. Well cooked, but clumpy, and a little on the bland side. The egg rolls were fine, with a bit of an odd aftertaste that I can't quite place, but some may find it good as it's a very particular flavor. Overall, this place was okay. A far cry from good, but certainly better than say, Panda Express or joints of that ilk. PE may have a bit more bang in terms of flavor, though. But the quality of the food itself is far better here. I have a personal policy to always give a place 2 or 3 chances. There's always the possibility you came in on an off day. Since it was a rainy Friday for me, the place was full, with a short wait list. Coupled with the fact that I chose a beef dish, which tends to be a hit or miss, and I'll give this place a second chance during a better time, and opt for General Tso or Salt and Pepper instead. A quick recap of the food: Wonton Soup: Bleh. Broth undrinkable, though to be fair, it comes down to personal taste. Wontons volumptuous, but excessively doughy. Mongolian Beef: Weak, but does the job. Sauce runny and salty, veggies bordering on raw, fried rice, mediocre. As a whole, mediocre, but too heavy on the soy sauce. If this experience serves as an accurate benchmark of this place, I wouldn't really recommend it. This would be the kind of place that you go to when you can't be bothered to cook and want something unhealthy within 5 miles of where you live. Just satisfactory. We have eaten at Hunan Ranch for years, the food has always been good. Takeout is always fine, also. Unfortunately the restaurant itself has gone downhill. The last several visits we have been there, it is dirty and cluttered; boxes of paper and plastic products everywhere, paper, food and dirt on the floor... gross. The bathroom is used for storage of even more boxes. Because we have a large family, they always seat us in the back, and there is an older lady (works there? owns the place?) who sits in a back table constantly, and who listens to loud programs continually on her phone (ear phones, anyone?) which is annoying and disruptive. At our last visit, she also coughed all over us without covering her mouth, and she blatantly picked her nose. I'm not even kidding... Not going back. Ewwwwwww read more

We generally like the food at this restaurant but the service is horrible. We were seated then totally ignored while each of three servers continued to walk past us- never acknowledging that we were even there. We watched as two tables of diners were seated 10 minutes after us and they were served right away. After 20 minutes of being ignored, we asked the hostess who our server was and she didn't know. We then spoke to the "manager" and she only offered that it was the hostesses job to let each server know they had customers. No apology, no attempt to rectify the situation by getting us a server, so we just left after sitting there for 25 minutes. We will NEVER go back again. We live 5 minutes away. Have ordered from that location for many years. Was told 60-90 minutes. It was still late. Worse than that, the order was wrong. Brought the wrong soup, which wouldn't be a big deal except the family member who ordered the soup is allergic to that particular soup. So, no food for her. Asked for a manager who was a TOTAL jackhole. First off, he blamed us for ordering the wrong soup as the person who took the order READ IT back to us. Funny, we ordered on-line and never SPOKE to anyone, so hard to believe we made the mistake. After a few (more than a few) minutes of the "manager" trying to explain that it was our fault we decided that we will find another restaurant. He is a COMPLETELY lacking manager and blamed everything on being "crushed". Whelp, we'll take some of that problem away dude. You might need a new job, because customer service is NOT your best fit. See ONLINE order and NOT BLAMING your customer among other things. Your tone, attitude, lack of professionalism, and horrid customer service just lost you a long time customer. read more

Well, this is my first time review about any types of businesses out there. Before I start writing the review Im like a person who eats out regularly with friends and my family and had never problems with any restaurants. About Hunan: Clean, good quality and fast. Problem : When we were seated, this waiter named Do came and asked my mom what she wanted for drinks.I was expecting to get asked next but he just walked away before my order. I mean this was okay. I thought he was really busy that he forgot to ask me. When he came back for our order and asked what we wanted for food, he literally threw his stack of scratch paper onto our table very rudely. I was a bit offended by his action but didn't say anything since I just wanted to have nice time with my mom and sister. Then, I asked for straws, no surprise, he threw them onto the table. He was cutting and talking over my mom when she was ordering and when giving out our food he literally pushed arm that food touched me. I've never experienced this rude waiter before in my life but I decided not to deal with them and just leave him no tips.The food cost me $23 and something and I left I'm $24. You might think this was it but no. Don't go away yet. I was checking my online statement today and realized I was charged $27 instead of 24. At this point I was mad. First of all, It was criminal offense and he had no right to change that. It was clearly illegal. You might assume that it might have been a mistake and simple change if you just call but under his behavior and my experiences with him I was no doubt that it might not have been an accident. I called the restaurant and transferred to the general manager John. He was asking me questions and had to repeat myself several times since he couldn't hear me. I was giving my information and had to tell him i could have invole police since it was clearly illegal and all i was getting was what my phone number was instead of apology. Even if it wasnt him that caused this, i strongly believe that he should have been reaponsible for this for being a general manager.anyway, back to the story, I asked if he was the manager. All of sudden he was accusing me of being rude. I was like WHAT?! I had to raise my voice up for this and he was basically insisting he was trying resolve the situation. Well I said that wasn't true and he kept repeating himself as well as a backing up story of he's got so many customers and tired(which I told him that was his business). Anyway, when he called me twice after that I apologized him for putting this up to him instead of the waiter but all I heard was that's okay. Well I was expecting an apologize back from him but he instead said nothing about it. He asked what exactly happened and hung up. Oh yeah, He refund $27 at the end but it really wasnt about the money by then. I'd never go back to Hunan again. We. have over the last few years solicited Hunan Ranch in our neighborhood. Lately, it has gone way down hill with quality food. My last visit in March '13 was nauseating. We arrived and the teen girl hostess obviously had ehither the flu or a bad cold. As she was seating us, she coughed and hacked,all while she had our menus in hand. I wanted to leave but my wife talked me out of it. We ordered and our food came out cold. As we were eating I watched in horror as the sick hostess, coughing, sneezing, walked over to a just finished table,grabbed a dirty wet rag, wiped down first the seats of a booth(yes, where ppl had placed their butts) then proceeded to wipe down the table!! Unreal! She then grabbed the napkin settings, coughing away and placed them on the "cleaned" table. I stopped eating on the spot, got the check and left, never, never to return. Driver gets here with attitude, and was very rude. so he got no tip, as soon as he saw no tip, he storms off talking shit and slams his door like an immature brat. Ok so i have to update my review. How low and cheap could this asian place get? Well this cheap. I ordered 4 entrees from this place. When i went to pick up my food i asked for hot oil sauce. They gave me only 1 to go with 4 entrees. I asked for another one and the rude girl behind the counter said it would be extra charge. I asked why would you charge me and her reply was you can only get one with your order. So technically i could have paid 4 different times since i bought 4 different entrees and then not get charged 4 times. How dumb and cheap could someone be? Rudest employees i have ever seen. But i could tell all this rudeness and cheapness is coming from the owners who have trained there employees this way. Its ok. They are not the only chinese place in town. This is my favorite Chinese place in town. I loved the sesame chicken. The rice is delicious. They are very timely!

AMAZING lunch portions for the price, and the soup is included with your plate. With dinner, you pay separate, but the portions are big enough to justify the added price. I've always ordered a shrimp or chicken with veggie plate, and the sauces are really flavorful. They're not the greatest when it comes to requesting a plate be made spicy if it's not in that plates' description, but oh well. Corn soup isn't as thick as I'm used to, but still flavorful, crab rangoons are delicious, and the egg rolls are good, with a thinner, flaky kind of crust/wrap. If your stomach is extra growly, the Pu Pu platter offers a great variety of delightfully deep fried appetizers, but the beef ribs always seem shaped funny to me. Service is on the slower paced side, but we're never in a hurry and the servers are really sweet. This place is probably 5 minutes from the neighborhood, never a wait and consistently good :) read more

We ordered 2 egg rolls, the pan-fried dumplings and sesame chicken and were very impressed. We have eaten here twice, both dine in. The food is decent but there are constantly gnats flying around. It is gross, unsanitary and just annoying! We were constantly trying to wave them away from our food and one landed in a plate of food and got stuck. There were a couple the first time we ate here but we thought it was a fluke. That was about 3 months ago. Last night there were still gnats everywhere. I don't think we will be going back.
