Posh Nosh... I absolutely love all the food I've ever had from their catering service. So, to find out they were doing the food for a new cafe and cocktail bar, had me sold immediately. As soon as I could I made my way here. Imagine my disappointment when the great food of the catering arm turned out to be only an illusion in a restaurant setting. In their defense, I came by during the end of a brunch menu. By that time the selections were limited, but the veggie quiche sounded good. Although I was told it was the last piece, I heard the person who took my order saying the same thing to at least two other people. I should have trusted my instincts. What a miss. The quiche was cold, tasted over-salted and the crust was tipping the edge of burnt. I couldn't finish it and given the size of the generous slice, it wasn't because I couldn't eat more, unfortunately. The bright spot was the coffee. I admit they whipped up a pretty mean latte. It was worth every sip. The space is wonderful in an artsy almost utilitarian way, there's counter seating and around the corner in the portrait room is an area more reminiscent of a lounge. On nice days, the outdoor seating will be well-used. It's worth a visit for the coffee. Because I really enjoy the catering arm, I hope if I stop here again, I'll have better luck with the food than I did on this visit. read more

The food was delicious! Flavorful, the right size portions, and came out quickly. The banana bread French toast was amazing, would definitely order again! The only problem we had during our visit was our server. She started off pretty good but ended up poorly. She never checked to see if we were good, didn't refill our drinks, and then slammed our syrup on the table after we asked twice and waited a while for it. After the syrup we never saw her again. Someone who few had to bring our check. What started as a great brunch ended in a disappointing experience. Love this place! We went for brunch but I cannot wait to try lunch and dinner options. We got the ricotta fritters to start which was a great choice. They were crispy on the outside with sugar and delicate and creamy on the inside. It was perfect for our sweet craving so we could order savory dishes in our main course. I opted for the biscuits and gravy. I love my moms version of this, and this version here was just as amazing (don't tell her!). The eggs were a perfect touch on top. My friend ordered the shrimp poboy and it was so huge she couldn't figure out how to eat it. She loved it. The only thing I didn't love that was we sat outside but it was cold! They had some space heaters throughout the patio but it just wasn't enough. Definitely book a reservation in advance if you can - that may have been our ticket to sitting indoors. The staff at hummingbird is absolutely delightful. Only to be matched by their food. They do a wonderful job incorporating Cajun influences to their menu. Which is a rare find in nc. The food is always so fresh and they change up their menu regularly so you can always find something new. Their cocktails must not be forgotten. Adorable! I'd give Hummingbird 4.5 stars. I came one evening after a gym class and sat at the bar. It's definitely small as all the other reviews reference, so it's great for a solo meal, catching up with a friend, or a date night with your honey. I loved the ambiance right away; it had soft lighting, a cozy feeling, and cute decorations. The food was amazing! I ordered the lamb meatballs, the avocado toast, and a glass of prosecco. The sauce for the lamb meatballs was so tasty with a fantastic spicy flavor. The toasted bread from boulted bread was a nice touch too. I definitely used the bread to finish all the sauce. The avocado toast was also wonderful. I loved the salsa on top; the peanut flavor was my favorite and made the avocado toast even better. It was a bit pricey, but I felt like it was worth it. I enjoyed my dinner at Hummingbird. I have a subscription to Offline, and this was one of their partners for August. I selected the voucher, not knowing what to expect, but glad I tried it. It's supposed to be a New Orleans-type restaurant. I ordered the shrimp po boy, and it was delicious. My partner doesn't eat shrimp, but she tasted a piece and liked it. There was so much shrimp it was falling off the plate. It comes with house-made chips. I also asked for a side of rum Eloise to dip the chips in, and it also went great on the sandwich. The waitress was very attentive and helped make meal selections. I will visit again to try some other dishes. read more

The bar was very busy, but the bartenders took time to talk with us about the Raleigh area. We had ricotta fritters for dessert and they were excellent!. On a scale of chicken to the good old 'merican bald eagle this place is soaring the skies of delicious foods and drink draped in the stars & stripes. Vibe: hipster-ish but easy going and quite a diverse crowd most times. I LOVE that this place has a large covered outdoor seating area and even though summers in NC can be brutal, it's position on the corner of the building often means a nice breeze is blowing through there as you're sipping one of many specialty cocktails, excellent beers, and a decent offering of European wines (they have CA too but...meh). The food is delicious. It's a cross between tapas style and items large enough for a meal. They change the menu frequently as it's a "farm to table" place and they build dishes largely based upon what is in season. The staff is generally friendly and helpful but if I have any suggestion for improvement it's to come outside more often to check on thing but this could be, and probably is, because they seem understaffed. At least during peak hours. There is an indoor bar seating area, table area and it's all comfortable and open. The food is excellent. The grilled oysters are on point. Heirloom tomatoes are the jam right now so a breakfast tomato pie and a lunch BLT (add avocado!) are mouth-wateringly delicious. Basically, go give Hummingbird a try and see for yourself! read more

I will preface this by saying it takes a lot to get under my skin and I like to be gracious to all staff that works in food, because I know how stressful it is to deal with the public. BUT this was the worst experiences at a restaurant I've ever had. Arrived at 11:15 AM for a friend's birthday brunch. We were sat at the very back of the patio away from any fans, literally the fan was turned away from us, pointing to the rest of the patrons there. We had two infants and it was 95 degrees out. Ok we can manage. My friend's husband had a bag sitting on a chair, when this random woman walks up and grabs the bag off the chair and proceeds to say the chair needed to be moved...um ok? She does bring back another chair, sits it down and walks away. The same woman, we eventually learn, is the manager named Erin. Erin needs to leave the restaurant business immediately because she looked absolutely miserable every time we saw her. Which was a lot because she would constantly walk by our table with this scowl. She also rolled her eyes when asked if we could get an extra fan since the one fan that was on, we didn't feel since we were out in the back. Clearly they were not ready to accommodate a large group of 11, if that was the case don't accept the reservation. On top of Erin being a witch, drink and food took forever. We got our food about an hour after ordering, The water had no ice, so it was lukewarm due to the heat. We hardly ever saw our waiter and there was a hair in one person's food. I came for brunch around 12:30 on a Saturday- there were 5 of us total. I'd heard that they just opened their brunch menu and was super excited to try it...but the entire experience was super disorganized and the food and drinks took around 1.5 hours to come out. It was all a little confusing when we walked in because there was no hostess. The servers kept just right on walking past us near the door and we stood around for 10min trying to figure out if we should seat ourselves. The barista was the finally nice of us to tell us we could. There were no open seats inside so we grabbed one outside (the heaters weren't on but it was strangely warm on February day). We were able to get seated without our whole group here though. The server took our orders in batches since we didn't come in at the same time. There were two cocktail drinks and two coffee drinks. Between the server getting our drink orders, we waited maybe another 30-45 minutes until he came back to take our food orders (which we shared 5-6 plates family style). THE DRINKS LITERALLY DIDN'T COME OUT FOR ANOTHER 45 MINUTES. And you could tell that the Bloody Mary was watered down like it had been sitting around with the ice for a while. One order didn't come with the sweetener we had asked and we had wait another 30min for it to come out. We asked three different servers for the sweeteners until one of them finally brought it out. One of the coffees didn't even come until the food came out (1.5hrs after we ordered it). Both coffees were lukewarm. No complaints about the food though. Portions were a little small for each person but I think because we all shared, it was the perfect amount to try everything. We got the oysters, steak & eggs, biscuit & gravy, avocado toast, shakshuka, and home fries. The avocado toast was a sad excuse of avocado toast and the salad for the steak & eggs was nonexistent but those are my only complaints. Kudos to our server for keeping his chill and being pleasant with us the entire time because we definitely were not understanding people towards the end. read more

My first stop after I got off the plane in Raleigh! It's such a cute place! There is outdoor seating but since it was raining we opted to sit inside. It is small so I would try to get here early if you are coming around prime dinner and drinks time. We came around 1pm so it was easy to find a seat at the bar. I started off with a cocktail which was very yummy! Since this was a few days ago I forget what I ordered but I know that the bartender can easily help you pick if you need it. I ordered the grilled cheese and the ricotta doughnut bites. The doughnut bites stole the show! The mascarpone cream and the berry puree it was served with was amazing! This is a must try when you dine here. The sandwich was good but very buttery. I needed a napkin in order to successfully finish without getting too greasy. I then ended the meal with a latte as I was up early that day to catch my flight. I added a marshmallow liquor to it and it hit the spot! The waitress recommended this and I'm glad she did! We came here for Father's Day and left pretty disappointed. We expected a bit of a wait because it's a holiday but when you have a reservation for Noon and don't get any food until after 1PM it's pretty frustrating. It took us over 10 minutes to get any water. Then came another 10 minute wait to get our drink orders in. Another 10 minutes to get coffee. After an hour we finally got our brunch. Our waiter barely stopped by to check on how the food was. We didn't wrap up our meal until closer 1:45 and our party only had four people. I've heard countless numbers of people telling me that the brunch is amazing but I was literally blown away by the dinner I had here recently. The menu is a combination of cocktails, small plates, pizzas and larger plates. Our server recommended I get the seafood special, and let me tell you, this special was really something special. It happened to be their take on Bouillabaisse and it reminded me a lot of Cioppino but it was so delicious that I told our server it deserved a permanent spot on their menu. She assured me that all of the seafood specials are always that good so you know who's going to be running back to enjoy their patio all summer long. read more

Came for brunch this morning with my mom. We weren't super familiar with the restaurant so we didn't know that because of the limited seating reservations are definitely the way to go on the weekends--but nonetheless, we were able to get seats at the bar. The barista/bartender was super warm, personable, and attentive to our questions about the menu. She helped us settle in on our orders: a Chai for me, a Vanilla Oatmilk Latte for mom, Ricotta Fritters, Chargrilled Oysters, Cheese Grits, and a Monte Cristo. My mom and I really liked our drinks to start. I wasn't in an alcohol mood this trip, but the drink menu looked super nice. The cafe menu was pretty bare bones, but hey, you can't have everything right? The chai was on the spicier side, which I loved. Foodwise, I found everything to be alright. Not spectacular--in flavor or presentation--but alright. Having eaten Montes for years, I found this rendition a bit flat flavor wise. The strawberry jam/preserve was definitely its savior, though. Mom loved her oysters and grits, and she absolutely raved over the ricotta fritters. They were impressively light and bingeable. I've been twice now. If I hadn't been before my most recent experience, the rating would've been 2 stars. The first time I went to Hummingbird was in the summer right after they opened. My friends and I arrived early Ish on a Friday (think 6p). I'm glad we did, because we got one of the last tables outside. Our waitress was amazing and helped us pick out the most wonderful drinks. Everyone ordered a mixed drink and was very happy with the selection and the help from our waitress. I do know this waitress has moved onto Vita Vite Midtown (at this time). We didn't eat during our visit, so I can't comment on the quality of food. The second (and likely to be one of the last few times we come), we arrived for brunch on Saturday. This did happen to be the first Saturday they were offering brunch, so I have some leniency for them. Everything started off okay in the first few minutes. A waiter saw us and indicated he was clearing off a table we could sit at if we just waited a minute. We then were seated, he grabbed our waters. We waited about 5 minutes before a menu was brought over.... and then we waited. We did not see the waiter again. We saw several waiters walk around and take other people's coffee orders and relocate people to different seating. None of them stopped to ask if we wanted a coffee or more water or another drink. As a side note, we were there at 1:30p, so not prime brunch time as well. After waiting an exorbitant amount of time, I finally walked up to the bar and asked if anyone was going to come take our order or if we needed to relocate to the bar to get an order. They finally sent someone over and apologized for the wait, saying they were backed up. After taking our order, they came back about 5 minutes later to tell us one of the items we ordered was sold out. I'm not sure how they had the audacity to make us wait before placing our order and then tell us what we wanted was sold out. They didn't offer a free item, they didn't offer anything. At this point, I told them it was time for us to leave. I can't recommend eating at Hummingbird. I would say try them for a drink, but don't expect good service. I'm not sure I'll be going back after this latest experience. I really can't believe they weren't more apologetic or embarrassed at their lack of service. From previous visits (a year ago), I agree with some previous comments about great atmosphere, good food, and like other restaurants in Raleigh... a not so friendly service (somewhat slow, rude hipster vibe). BUT, we just revisited again today and it was amazing! The menu has expanded with the best food I've had there. The atmosphere was great, with outdoor seating, heat trees, and seat warmers. We found this place online during a random search of Raleigh restaurants. We made reservations for Wednesday night, the night before Thanksgiving. Dinner was for 7:30. From the moment we arrived, the feel of the place was disappointing. For example, although the place had plenty of seats, we were escorted directly to the very last seats in the back, right at the kitchen door. We were insulted and told them we wanted different warmer seating. They seated us at the bar. The bartender Hannah became our server. We ordered the blackened flounder, smoked deviled eggs, gumbo, a hamburger and an order of collard greens. During our entire meal there was no one else was seated at the bar. We needed salt and pepper but Hannah had left the bar. A table server stepped up to help us. We would have walked out but for her. Hannah never asked us "How is the meal?" Is there anything I can get for you?" She spent the entire time making drinks (as would be expected of a bartender) and acting as though we were interrupting her (we probably were) by asking questions about the content and manner of cooking of our food. So, in a nutshell, with the exception of the table server, service was way less than standard. Now about the food. The food was way less than good. Seriously, the only thing we enjoyed were the deviled eggs, the burger and the water (We asked for bottled water initially but were told that they did not provide that but their entire system was filtered.). The chicken gumbo was simply outrageous. Nothing at all like any gumbo we have ever seen. It was dark, watery, only spices appeared to be fresh cut jalapeno. The meat was plentiful but the consistency was not correct. Although it had rice, it lacked okra. Gumbo without okra is not gumbo. The chicken was stringy and was not tender. The flounder was like a cracker. Crisp and no meat at all. We ordered it without bread but they seemed to have forgotten the meat also. I saved this part for last......this terrible dinner cost us $87.00. Yes, $87.00 for 2 bowls of terrible gumbo, 2 sandwiches, 3 hardboiled eggs and some collard greens (The greens were so bad that we took one taste and left the entire plate alone. You know it is bad when an entire plate of collards greens are left to throw away.) We tipped them $20 because of the table waitress who helped us and we knew that tips would be shared. Not that it matters but one of us is a well known trial attorney and the other is an accomplished jewelry designer. Both of us are African-Americans. We didn't appreciate being seated at the kitchen door when the place was so empty. Never again! Maybe the drinks are great (we do not drink and don not know), but we do not recommend this place for any food. The chef's recipes are tasteless, overpriced and completely over the top. This is not creative food. This menu needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom. Prices need to reflect reality. The entrees are stale, outdated and tastes bland. Nothing to see here. read more

Brunch at Hummingbird was pretty disappointing but it did start well. I sat down and ordered a coffee and a sticky bun which was delicious. They have decent coffee and that sticky bun!!!! I should have stopped there and I would be writing a much different review. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros which was refried beans, avocado pico, ranchero salsa and two sunny side up eggs. I did ask for over medium after confirming the yellow would be runny but the white would be fully cooked. I have such an aversion to runny whites. Anyway, when the food arrived, I could see that the eggs looked way over cooked. They were fried hard. I asked if I could get two more eggs over medium. I'm submitting pictures with this review. The eggs came out again so over cooked. It's brunch and you can't cook eggs? That's not good. The rest of the plate was just as bad. There was hardly any refried beans and I saw nothing that looked like avocado pico so it was basically lettuce and tomato on a tortilla. It was just not good at all. And I was inside at the bar and the flies were horrendous. It was a battle to keep them off of your food. I finally gave up! I doubt I'll go back. I could make that dish for $1.00 at home and eat fly-free. read more

They only allow patio seating now and it was just perfect. They share the patio with Lynwood brewing and few other places. Service was a bit slow, but anyways we were in no hurry. That's because (unfortunately) it wasn't extremely memorable. We had drinks here on a weekday evening. I like the space because the tables are far enough apart to have a semi-private conversation and it's not very loud. However, there was something odd and uncomfortable about the service. It was slow and our server acted like she was too busy and we were an unwelcome task to attend to. The drinks were great but most of the snacks/apps were just ok (caulifower, salad, crudite) with the exception of the pasta dish which was very simple, yet absolutely delicious. Based on the reviews I would not try a meal inside but I would come back again for drinks out on the patio with a group of 4 or less if we we are not in a hurry, just no food next time. read more

The hostess said she would see what she could do but never came back to address the issue.
