We had a party of 6 for Sunday brunch, 10:30 reservation. Our server was attentive enough when we first sat down, though drinks took a long time to arrive. A cocktail described as "not too sweet" was cloyingly so. When it came time to order plates, our server seemed distracted and was unhelpful (eg, how would you like your eggs? Poached? No, we don't do that. / Do you have sour cream? No. What's that white cream on that plate? Yogurt. Can I have some? [No yogurt ever arrived.]) We tried a variety of offerings, including the shakshuka, monte cristo, shrimp & grits, and chicken & waffles. Shakshuka was very flavorful but the egg cookery sucked (easy came out hard). Monte cristo balance was off (too much jam to ham ratio). I didn't try the others, but the rest of the party seemed to enjoy them. Had to order additional maple syrup (for an extra charge) for the chicken and waffles. A second round of drinks took close to 40 minutes to come out, and then arrived wrong. We had to actively flag staff down to get a fix. Then we sat for a long time, after the table had been bused around us, waiting for the server to come back by. She attended other tables around us while we waived to her to get a check. She did not make eye contact or check in, and at one point was actively carrying on a conversation over my head with another table as she attempted to hand me our long-awaited check. All around, middling food and poor service. Won't be at the top of my brunch list. read more

We celebrated a birthday at Hummingbird. Our server was great; he was very helpful, warm, and friendly. Likewise, the Chef stopped by twice to check in to make sure we enjoyed our meal. For my meal, I had the blistered shishito peppers, a favorite of mine, and the gumbo. The very large serving of peppers were good, but would have been great with a sprinkle of salt. As for the main course, I never knew that gumbo and potato salad were a thing, but it was very nice. My dining companion raved about the chicken pot pie. I got to try a bite as well and I agree it was very good overall. The crust was phenomenal. Recommended. As for the space, it's definitely on the quirky side. You will likely love it or hate it; there's no in between. If we had not visited on a cold winter evening, I would have preferred to sit on the covered walkway. read more

I made reservations online prior to dining here. When we arrived we were seated right away and were told how to get our parking validated. Our server was pleasant. I got the gumbo and the ricotta fritters for dessert. The fritters were served warm with a mascarpone cheese and a strawberry sauce. I enjoyed the fritters. The gumbo was ok. It tasted like there was a little too much seasoning that may not have been dissolved in the dish. This caused there to be a slight after taste when eating the gumbo. The quiche had a delicious rich and savory flavor and I enjoyed the flaky crust. I went here on a Friday night with friends, and we were seated outside. I didn't look at the inside, but it doesn't look like it has much seating in there. It was a little windy, which was a bit annoying. The service was pretty good, and our waitress often came by to refill waters. I got the New Orleans BBQ shrimp and split the fries with a friend. The shrimp were very good! I loved the spices and the kick that they had. The bread was also good. The fries are actually smashed fingerlings, but they were nice and crispy on the outside. The remoulade was also good to dip them in. I think it's a little weird you only get chips with their sandwiches and can't upgrade to regular French fries. The inside seating is very small with a room with 3-4 tables. They also have bar seating with about 6 bar stools, but most of it is on the patio. We were seated on the patio and things started well. It was a warm day so perfect for patio seating. Our waitress was friendly and took the drink orders and eventually the food orders but then pretty much disappeared. Someone else brought out the food and at the end, took care of the checks. The waitress did come peek from a distance on the table a few times but never checked on us to see if we needed anything or to refill my iced tea that was empty. So I had to ask for a refill. This is a pet peeve of mine . Then later on another employee came and took that empty glass from the table that seemed very strange trying to rush us out. She did not ask if I wanted more or if I was done. The service was odd here. I went with the steak and eggs. It was ok but nothing I'd order again. The steak was tougher than I like. After a recommendation from our credit card company, Hummingbird was on the calendar for dinner. We arrived at a little before our 6:30pm reservation and were pretty much seated right away. One thing to note about this restaurant is that it's very small. The interior only has a few tables and the rest are outside. It was super chilly on the night we visited but the heaters helped. By the time we left, they were offering fur seat covers to everyone. In addition to the small size, the menu was also small and very niche. This made it very hard for us to decide. Some love this and some do not. For an appetizer, we chose the deviled eggs and they were divine. When it came time for the entrees, I chose the 1/2 sumac smoked chicken. My boyfriend chose the market fish, which this day was a whole fried fish. We enjoyed our meals well, but they were both very messy and hard to eat. The fish didn't have much meat on it and the flavor was good, but nothing crazy on each. The service here was pretty well given how busy the restaurant was. We liked that the location was near other restaurants and bars and actually inside an old loading dock. Hummingbird is a very unique restaurant and experience. If that's what you're going for, I recommend. If you are a picky eater and like a classic experience, it might not be for you. We would both like to come back if ever in the area again. read more

I had the soft-shell crab sandwich, and wow--flavor explosion! Crispy, perfectly seasoned, and paired with their house-made chips that were crunchy and addictive. A friend ordered the ribeye, which was beautifully cooked and full of smoky, char-grilled flavor. The char-grilled oysters? Absolute standouts. Juicy, flavorful, and worth every bite. If I had to note one downside, it's the indoor space--it's very limited. So most seating ends up being outdoors, and with Raleigh's summer heat, it can get overwhelmingly hot. Unfortunately, they don't have fans circulating air on the patio, so I recommend bringing a handheld fan or dressing light. That said, the overall experience makes it worth it every single time. Stumbled into the Hummingbird after Brody soccer game just down the road before driving back to CLT. They have a private parking lot and validate parking for 3 hours when dining. We were seated promptly at the bar. Brody ordered a matcha tea which he enjoyed. The bar area was like a throwback bar with pastel colors and aged concrete exterior walls. For our entrees, I ordered the Tasso hash with cheese grits and Brody ordered a breakfast burrito. We sat and enjoyed the bar tender make drinks while we waiting for our meal. The cheese grits arrived well before the meal so I asked the bar tender to replace the first bowl of grits so they would be hot and served with our meal which she obliged. The food came and Brody found his breakfast burrito very aesthetically appealing with the sunny side up egg on top, but he figured out using a fork and knife was his bet. My Tasso hash was served very hot with sweet and white potatoes and large pieces of Tasso ham. The single sunny side up egg was not adequate considering the cost of the meal. Normal portion size would be 2 eggs for a $20 breakfast. Is this the business coping with the orange turd in the WH by practicing shrinkflation or have they always served only one egg with a $20 breakfast? I surmise this is a Fair question to ask. A friend recommended Hummingbird. It was my first time there and I was very pleased. The parking was adequate plus free if you get validation at the restaurant. There were many menu choices for anyone's palate but we both chose the veggie quiche. The quiche was very tasty and included some "naked" greens which didn't seem to serve a purpose - a small salad would have been better. We reserved a table on the patio which was perfect. Celebrating a friends' birthday with Brunch should be nothing but enjoyable, but unfortunately this place missed the mark BIG TIME. The food, drinks and space were all awesome and should be the perfect spot for an occasion like this. The meal and service started out great, but we were then notified that we had 10 minutes to leave our table because they had another group that needed it after us... A few of us had just ordered our second drink of the day (so nothing out of the ordinary for a brunch!!).. which I then cancelled since we apparently had to leave our table. After our waitress told us that we needed to leave we cancelled that drink order, got our cards out and waited on the waitress to bring our checks. Within 2-3 minutes of still waiting for our checks we then had another lady come up to us to tell us in a very, very rude manner that we needed to leave within 10 minutes. I have never been kicked out of a restaurant and will never be back here even if they have the best Chai I've ever had. Super disappointed and really had high hopes for this place. If there was a time limit for our reservation it could have been presented in a much better way, which would still be a big miss when brunch is supposed to be an experience and is hard to rush everything when you have 9 people. read more

Took my mother and aunt to Sunday brunch here. I made a reservation but it appeared anyone walking up could still get a table. There's a large parking lot around the establishment so there was no problem finding a spot. We all got mimosas and my mom and I got the Monte Cristo sandwich, which we both loved. My aunt got the chicken and waffles. There wasn't enough syrup on it for her liking so she requested more and was told there is a surcharge for that. We were seated off in a corner room of the restaurant that had a couple of more small tables. Once all the tables were filled up it got a bit loud and hard to hear the conversation at our table. The restroom was nearby so I didn't get to see the other parts of the restaurant because I wasn't going to go walking around. Our service was okay - our water glasses ran dry for a bit and my Aunt had to get up to find our waitress in order to request extra syrup. Service is always wonderful, the servers are down to earth, helpful, attentive but not overbearing. They have great patio seating which is covered. Parking can be a bit of a pain in the location but the food is worth it. This time I ordered the honey badger for my drinks and it was delicious, the orange blossom flavor really made a difference and I'd get this drink every time I visit the restaurant. For my starter I ordered the charbroiled oysters and I had intended to share them with my friend but I ate them all, they were so good. For my entree, I took my servers recommendation and ordered the blackened fish sandwich and it was full of flavor, the fish was well seasoned and cook great and the bun was soft and warm. I wasn't a fan of the chips on the side but I just prefer fries, they had good flavor. The food here is good. I had steak and eggs and my steak was tender and moist. My grits were super creamy. They even have Crystal hot sauce. But I would consider the food inspired by New Orleans rather than traditional fare. Don't let that stop you from going. The brunch was amazing. The food was good. The music was jumping. They had some amazing artwork on the walls. I forgot to ask if it was local, oh well. The staff were friendly. Our waitress was kind and took our drink order. I decided on the Pimms cocktail. The other ladies had mimosas and margaritas. My drink was very weak. More like juice. We also had charbroiled oysters to start. These were just ok. Overpowering seasoning. Meh. I wanted to play it safe and went with the waitresses recommendation of the chicken and waffles. I figured that couldn't fail me. The entrees took way too long to arrive to the table. We had plans following brunch. My food arrived and the fried chicken appeared severely over cooked and was too dry. The waffles were fluffy but lackluster. Extra Syrup was an up-charge I was told. The other ladies had New Orleans style Poboys with shrimp and oysters. These did not look good. Another guest requested Vegan Pizza. The order arrived incorrect with dairy ingredients. We were celebrating a major milestone birthday but we were never offered anything from the menu complimentary or to add to sing and celebrate the occasion.
