Hula Hula is the greatest karaoke bar on the planet, and trust me -- I've pretty much tried them all.
Let's start with the main attraction: karaoke. It's seven days a week, starting at 9pm, on one of the more awesome stage and sound setups you'll find out there. Great lights, effects like fog and bubble machines, a terrific sound system, lyric screens in all the right places, and more -- all run (most nights) by KJ Mikey on the knobs and dials, and I promise he'll make you sound better than you ever have before. The song selection is good (admittedly not great), the bar attracts are very good singers, and the crowd is generally very fun, supportive, and encouraging towards everyone regardless of how well they sing.
One thing to note on karaoke: Hula Hula is almost annoyingly fair about the karaoke rotation. Their rule is that each person gets one turn on stage per rotation, and they stick to it without fail. This super-strict fairness is really nice on busy weekend nights. You'll never find yourself at Hula Hula wondering, "why the hell has this jackass sang three times and I haven't gotten to yet?!"On the other hand, don't expect to walk in and get bumped to the top of the rotation by tipping the host. It won't happen.
Off stage, you'll find a tiki-themed bar, fully decorated in surf and sand trinkets, and with a speciality cocktail menu to match. Don't miss the Volcano Bowl, a tub full of delicious god-knows-what that is lit on fire before it's served. The place is good-sized, with plenty of seating around the karaoke stage, but also plenty on the other side of the bar for those wanting a (slightly) quieter time. There's a nice smoking patio, and the door by the KJ booth actually leads to Tini Biggs, the cocktail bar next door -- it's a little-known fact that you can totes buy a drink at one bar and walk it through to the other, so feel free to hit up Tini while you wait for your song at Hula.
Hula Hula is quiet Sunday through Tuesday, picks up on Wednesday and Thursday, and can get downright insane on Friday and Saturday. Come on a Monday if you want to try out four new songs in front of a handful of strangers. Come on Saturday if you want to dance, party, and drink the night away with a big, fun-loving crowd while probably only getting to sing one or two songs. Come on a Thursday if you want something in between.
Clearly I'm a regular and clearly I enjoy karaoke, but it's really not why I hang out at Hula Hula. I'm there for the staff. The bartenders fit perfectly into this environment, slinging cocktails, shots, and beer at a furious pace, and often take time to sing a song themselves -- sometimes even while serving drinks! All of the bartenders are good, but Heather -- the tiny ginger who has been there for several years now -- is especially great and really exudes the fun, relaxed personality of the bar. The cocktailers, managers, and karaoke staff are always great, as well.
I've been to karaoke bars all over the country, and I've never found a place that is as good as Hula Hula top to bottom. The sound and stage are incredible, the regulars are fun and welcoming, the staff is great, the drinks are appropriate and delicious, and the food is totally solid. You can't go wrong. read more
