I've visited this location a few times per year over the last twenty years. I stopped off yesterday (Tuesday) at around 5:00 with two friends. I am always impressed by their menu. They have a wide assortment of choices. Not quite as vast as a Cheesecake Factory's menu but pretty close. They also seem to be more health focused than your average restaurant. Service was great. Was here last night because we were staying across the street at the Mariposa since staff recommended it with a 10 percent discount. Nice to see a variety on the menu. Lots to choose from plus a nice kid's menu. The reason for the disappointment was first we ordered beer. Food came out and beer was never brought out. We had to ask about it half way through our meal and she finally remembered. The salad I ordered said it had chicken but it was maybe like 3-4 slices cubes so for a $20 salad, I expected there to be more. I would probably for my money's worth at Whole Foods across the street. Also, when we mentioned we stayed at the hotel for the 10% discount, she only gave us a discount off the beer, ($10 beer, only a $1.00 discount) the hotel staff told us it would be 10% discount off the total bill so to take a 10% discount off an item was shocking. Great vegan options and super friendly staff!!! Molly and her staff at Hugos are absolutely delightful. I always have great, quick service there, even through the pandemic. Yesterday I tried the vegan Mac n cheese and it was delicious! Crispy onions with mushrooms and peas on top gave it so much flavor and texture. I found hair in my food when I notified the waiter there was no sense of urgency and still charged me for my drink.

We go to Hugo's every month or so. The food has always been good. Tonight, I had the turkey meatloaf, which was as tasty as always. I might be wrong; however, the portion size seemed smaller than the last time I ordered the turkey meatloaf. My other had her general go to: the veggie burger. Right or wrong, she believes that it was smaller than when she previously ordered it. She also thinks that the quality of her burger was not on par with previous times. To his credit, our server, Nathan C,, once apprised of my other's disappointment, allowed her to order a different entree, Pasta Mama, which she enjoyed immensely. My wife and I came here after I was out of work one day. Unfortunately, I would shortly regret it. We ordered two lattes, fried pickles, baked salmon and Carbonara. The pickles had an off taste to them and the pickles looked very cheap. The Carbonara had a nice sauce consistency, but had little to no taste. Even after I added salt. The staff is still great the food maybe a tad off or maybe it is just a bit too warm in the restaurant. I think I'm being nice with the three stars because my experience was two stars 's but other people in my group had a four-star experience, so I'm giving the place the benefit of the doubt. Putting aside it took around 40 minutes to get our food, the food was cold and the order was wrong. The menu was eclectic which is up to each person to judge. There was a 3% food service charge to subsidize the staffs' income. Why not just give them a raise and increase prices 3%. I Don't have the same luxury in my industry. This place is cute and the service was good our waiter was attentive and nice, he even offered up suggestions and was able to ask the chef about our allergy concerns. I had a pan roasted salmon with a house salad and mash potatoes, all of that in my opinion was fine not mind blowing but fine. The food & service have always been amazing at Hugo's. Why I'm upset & aggravated & giving 3 stars at this current moment is because of their lack of transparency with additional hidden costs that make the customer look like an asshole. There is now a 3% surcharge added for back of house/kitchen staff on your receipt. Supposedly it's stated on the menu BUT it's not stated clearly or in big apparent letters to let you know BEFORE your bill comes at the end of the meal. In which it states AFTER you have been given the bill, if you want this charge removed you can have it removed. Additionally, I ordered a side of ranch 2x for various reasons and purposes not realizing I would be charged xtra for dressing to my meal. The waiter didn't let me know up front about these additional costs. I might sound like I'm quibbling & I might be however- transparency from an organization that charges $22 for a burger would be nice. Also- it would be advantageous to let your staff have a taste of new menu options such as the passion fruit sorbet. When I asked the waiter if he had tried the desert & if he likes it, he hasn't a clue because he hadn't tried it. This is lame. Your wait staff should have a taste of everything to be able to let the customers know their personal experience and to make it a great one for the customer. Also- taking the churros off your menu was a big mistake. They were some of the best in town. Dumb move. I recommend putting them back on your menu. Thank you for your consideration of having more transparency within your organization. Having your waitstaff being more transparent. Having charges be more upfront. We came here for reservations for a party of 10 & It was already loud in here but of course it was Sunday , they got mimosas but not bottomless. They sat us right on time and ordered our drinks. I got the horchata latte hot, I recommend ! For my food I ordered the huevos rancheros and we're not spicy at all, so ask for a side of jalapeños. As for my rice and beans they didn't have much flavor. I will definitely come back again to try another menu on the item. Was excited to try this place for brunch due to my girlfriend being vegan and there being a lot of vegan options... Never again!! First off if you like chai do not get the iced or the hot because it tastes very bitter like dishwater. Not sweet at all. And when we took our first sips and decided that we didn't like it, there was no accommodations made whatsoever besides refer us to a different drink. We chose orange juice and not only didn't the waitress show any sympathy for us disliking the drink, she actually upcharged our orange juices to large size without us even knowing! We could tell she was really trying to make her money as she tried to charge us ala carte for every vegan item instead of suggesting the combo. You would think your waitress wouldn't try to get every dollar she can out of you... Mind you we were polite the whole time... Every year, I take my mom somewhere special for her birthday. It will never be the same place twice nor a place that we've visited before. However, my mom and I lived in the San Fernando Valley for most of our lives. It only took 30 some years later to find this restaurant which was literally behind our back yard. I and many of you have written reviews for places that you barely tried when you move away. Well, we are always being schooled. For a restaurant that has been around for 40 years, this is Year 1 for me and I hope to come back for more! Let's have some breakfast at the simple, but sophisticated, Hugo's in Valley Village in the San Fernando Valley. Located on the northeast corner of Cold Water Canyon and Riverside Dr., you will find a green diner, home of Hugo's Restaurant. At one point, I can see this being a simple coffee diner where all the cool cats hung around. Well, it still is! The parking lot can fit about a dozen cars, but can fill up quickly in the morning and evenings. My wife and I had reservations for my mom's birthday. It was more of a surprise for my wife than for my mom because of the offerings Hugo's Restaurant probably want to spread. **At the time of this writing, Vaccination Cards are Required to eat INSIDE, otherwise, you can eat the patio area** We sat in the corner section of the patio with a view of Riverside Drive. We were introduced to our hostess, Hayley. She welcomed us and took our drink orders: My mom had a Cappuccino ($4.75), my wife had a Hot Chocolate ($4), and I had Hugo's Green Tea ($4). These drinks weren't just in simple cups, they were in large cup/bowls. Well worth the price you pay for. With my Green Tea, I had a brew/tea kettle type thing I have never used before. I guess I pump and try to get the Green Tea extracts out, but I loved every sip of the Green Tea. If you come in a Brunch Time, you can some of Hugo's Specialty Drinks from their famous Mimosas, Mojitos, and Spicy Michelada. Hugo's does offer soda, but with a place like this, go big with their smoothies, teas, or their lattes. With us coming at a prime time of 9am for breakfast, Hugo's brought out their big guns for their menu. From pancakes to Avocado Toast to oatmeal to breakfast scramble. It's time to digest all of this. My wife was super impressed to see VEGGIE BACON ($6) and had to order it! Hayley came back and my mom knew what she wanted to order because of her favorite musician, Bruno Mars. She ordered the Bruno Breakfast Scramble ($15.75), my wife ordered two chocolate chip pancakes ($10) with a cup of Rosemary Potatoes, and, of course Veggie Bacon ($6). Whoa...Whoa...Wait...she wasn't done....and she ordered a bottled Root Beer ($3). As for me, I ordered the Breakfast Burrito ($13.75) with organic fruit as my side. The wait for our food would be about 18-20 minutes as more and more guests arrived. As our food arrived, the sun decided to go hiding behind the clouds. We would've had instafamous food. Everyone's meal looked delicious. All I remember from my wife was: SHE WANTED TO ORDER MORE VEGGIE BACON! If we only knew who manufactured the veggie bacon, we can have some at home. Her two chocolate chips were pretty big and powdered with sugar. My mom's Bruno Breakfast Scramble was eggs scrambled in spinach, mushrooms, avocado, and bacon. As for me, my Breakfast Burrito was pretty simple, but had spice in every bite. It had eggs, bacon, cheese with a wheat tortilla. My meal came with it's own sauce that kicked the spice up another notch. Glad I chose the organic fruits (grapes, apples, strawberries), it helped calm my tongue just a little bit. I think I had the healthiest of them all with the Green Tea. When you pay, you can with your card or you can scan via QR Code and be done right away. Keep up with the times! 40 years is a long time that Hugo's has been hiding from me and now the secret is out. I didn't think Hugo's was so close to my previous home that I had it go undetected. When you keep low key, it happens, but my wife and I have a spot to have breakfast when we are in the valley. I know my mom had a special birthday meal with her loved ones. First time i've ever seen "organic fried chicken" on the menu, which is so interesting as it seems Hugo's has taken the soul out of the food. The asian salad had a lot of carrots in it, and the mexican style salad was solid but not worth the price. I also got the matcha with rice milk, and again felt like despite the ceremonial grade matcha I would have much rather made it myself at home.
