Have always enjoyed Hugo's from back in the day at the Weho location. This spot has also become legendary and adored by the neighborhoods surrounding no doubt! The pasta papa is the must breakfast treat and the array of healthy allergen friendly options is so appreciated! Need to stop in again and try the gluten free fried chicken! My breakfast this time was the Nuevo's Ranchera and it was solid .. it came to the table though tepid in temperature. They were quick to remake it and I was very appreciative. We went to Hugo's to celebrate anniversary's... Saturday night we had reservations, took us upon arrival..The food was great, 2 of our party are vegan, and their food was prepared and cooked as ordered.. the other 2 orders were cooked perfectly as well. Oh goodness ... Hugo's is probably my very favorite Restaurant in the valley, consistent, pleasant, and values focused. I always love the food here - and they always have thoughtful swaps - according to Customer preferences (vegan, vegetarian, allergies ... etc.). Parking lot, and lots of street parking to boot. Solid, elevated diner food is the best way I can describe the cuisine here. Great place for large breakfast plates done well. Dropped off my spouse and father-in-law for an appointment across the street and decided to grab a bite for me and some takeaway food for the others while waiting, so this Hugo's across the street seemed like the perfect solution. I went in and asked if I could be seated in the outdoor patio area (which was empty at the time). I was promptly seated, provided a menu and a place setting, then completely forgotten. For 45 minutes. At first I didn't notice, as I was working away on my phone. Then I was curious to see how long before they figured out I was there. Nothing. Not even from the employees eating 10 feet away in their break tent. By this point, my spouse texted they were almost ready, so I left. I almost ordered the delicious sounding BBQ Turkey Sandwich, a horchata latte, and a side salad--not to mention whatever my spouse and FIL might have wanted if I had taken their order earlier as planned. Just like another reviewer mentioned, there are ridiculous surcharges which I do NOT agree with. It's really too bad, since I have gone to this restaurant countless times over many years. The menu is interesting and accommodates a lot of restricted diets, but it's definitely all quite overpriced. During my most recent dining experience at Hugo's, the service was VERY slow, and the server got both my and my friend's drink orders wrong, then charged me an extra $3 for a drink I didn't order. When the time came to pay the bill, the server returned with the tablet so she could run my card. The three choices on the tablet screen for tip were 20%, 22%, and 25%. The highlighted, default tip amount was 22%. That already upset me. Don't get me wrong, I consistently tip at least 20%, but I didn't like how tricky and presumptive the restaurant was. Most restaurants have suggested tip percentages of 15%, 18% and 20%. For them to have 22% as the default is sneaky and wrong. In fact, because I was upset about that, I left 20%, not 22% and certainly not 25%, on principle. Then I got my printed receipt and noticed that the restaurant had charged a 3% surcharge for back of room staff. This was added to the total amount which meant that the tip I left was reflective of the entire bill which included that 3% surcharge. On the bottom of the receipt I saw a note that a patron can have the 3% surcharge removed by letting the restaurant know, but I had ALREADY BEEN CHARGED. I doubt anyone actually complains and gets that surcharge removed. Another greedy win for the restaurant. Lastly, the receipt had suggested ADDITIONAL tip amounts of 2% to 7%. Yeah right, like the tip I had been hoodwinked into leaving (referring to the surcharge) wasn't enough for this greedy restaurant. Who would leave an ADDITIONAL 2% to 7% on top of 23%? The only reason why I am leaving 3 stars instead of 2 is because this place has been around for so long, and the food is decent. Honestly, I don't think I want to return to this restaurant ever again. read more

I stumbled upon Hugo's while I was picking up for Uber eats. Told myself I would check it out and then I came the following weekend for a brunch date. To my surprise, I was as shocked to see the many option of vegetarian and vegan items they had. Plenty of option, more than any other non-vegetarian restaurant has offered. Of course, we have the typical regular meat items you can enjoy. Food is saltless as it made purposely in order for you, the customer, to add salt to your liking. Excellent food, lots of choices! My brother-in-law has Celiac and it is difficult finding a restaurant that sells Food that is Gluten free. We were pleasantly surprised that there are so many items on the menu that are Gluten free. The food is delicious, we brought my 99 year old mother with us and she ordered a quesadilla with vegetables and cheese. It was delicious and normally my Mom doesn't eat. First off - the food is DELICIOUS. Hands down some of the best vegan non vegan options in town. However I've done takeout or Postmates thus far. The presentation and quality of the food has always been wonderful! In person however, I'm unimpressed. Saturdays are clearly busier, but I was seated for one over 10 minutes ago and my server didn't bother to greet me. There was a 4-top table that came in only a 3-4 minutes ago to my left and he came to their service immediately with water, ordered and brought specialty drinks. After I noticed that I said, "Excuse me." And he said, "Are you ready?" It felt like a little attitude as if I was a bother. I was neglected for no reason other than I can think of that a larger table might tip more than a one top. However, this is unfair service so I'm unimpressed with their front of house. When I worked food service (for over 10 years) it was a goal no matter how busy to greet a table no matter how large the party ideally within the first minute even if only to say in quick passing, "Hi there! I'll be right with you." The acknowledgment means a lot rather than being ignored until customer needing to engage first. I'd love to ask Hugo's to please be more mindful of this moving forward since I now will go back to just ordering take out. The food though again is spectacularly amazing and I sincerely appreciate all the vegan and gluten-free dishes that most restaurants could never compare to. It was my first time going to Hugo's ! My boyfriend took me here on Valentine's Day and it was also my birthday! The service is so amazing, very friendly! The moment you walk in it really feels like home ! Our food was super good ! My boyfriend and I ordered the pasta victor ! Perfect level of spicy and cheese ! As well we got mimosas! The prices seem to have gone up a lot. For a salad and burger with fries and latte our bill was $60 at lunch time. The food is delicious but I'm not sure we are willing to keep paying higher and higher prices for a regular meal. 22 for the burger and fries. The salad was $20 plus 6.95 since I requested to add chicken. The portions were good and the ingredients were quality so I can't complain too much - I know the cost of everything is unfortunately going up. The horchata latte is my favorite! The greeting staff was kind and genuine. Our reservation was honored immediately without having to wait. Our waitress, Michelle, was clearly busy, but always made sure we were taken care of and kind and patient with our multiple orders over a couple of hours. I love Hugo's. The menu has something for everyone, including someone with food allergies like me. The outdoor patio is so pleasant. It is half enclosed and half exposed so you feel the cool breeze. Love the food. not only for me but also for my vegan partner. Service is always nice and friendly. The ambiance can be loud at times. But I guess that depends on what time you go there. I normally would give a place like this 5 stars. But I am so getting tired of all those extra charges. Especially in this place. It is not that going out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner has already been expensive enough since COVID. But those over-the-top exaggerated suggested tips you are supposed to give now are getting out of hand. As far as I know, waiters/waitresses here in CA get the minimum wage of $15.50 ( from Jan. 2023) now. Not less like a cashier in a big box grocery store who also works very hard.Standing on their feet all day and having to deal with sometimes the worst of customers. Or any other worker out there who works with customers does not receive tips at all. But then in addition to asking for an additional amount of money on top of the tip AND automatically taking 3% of the check for the "crew in the kitchen" (which you can deny. Yeah, how much pressure is this on a customer? ) Doesn't the kitchen staff get paid? You already raised the prices of your food. You take care of your employees. not me. Overall Hugo's is a decent eatery. The issue I have is with the service & excessive overcharging for anything extra. I met friends from out of town last week on the patio, when I walked in it was blasting heat & very uncomfortable. We asked them to turn off the heat, they did, then asked them to turn on the 2 ceiling fans, they did. Our waiter was an oddball who kept asking me to repeat my order, 2 pancakes, an over easy egg, a few slices of strawberries. Ok, food was served, we ate, we never saw the waiter again. The table next to us asked for their check at the same-time as we had, but no waiter for another 10 minutes!!! WTF? I paid on his credit card unit, he added a 22% tip for himself, so I did a custom tip of $2.00. I didn't notice until after i left that he charged me $6.00 for a tiny ramekin, maybe the equivalent of 2 strawberries!!!! It's not worth my time to bother going back to complain about the charges, but buyer beware!! It's also very noisy inside the main area, the patio tends to be less crowded. read more

The food is great as always. We go there once a week and it's always been consistent. However last night. Our server was very dismissive and we can tell she checked out and didn't wanna be there. She would say oh sorry before I even finished my sentence. She wasn't accommodating at all and we both were like what's happening here. We're not gonna say we had 5 star service in the past, but most of the servers there are polite and they try their best. We did arrive at 8pm and left before 9pm when the dining room was half full, maybe that's the reason I m not sure. If you are into food with no flavor and no seasoning then this place is for you. My friend order the grilled salmon with noodles which was not grilled by the way. No seasoning and the noodles were well let's just say the noodles were interesting lol. I got the chicken pesto sandwich it was strong and tasteless at the same time lol. The pesto was overpowering and the chicken had no flavor. The service was ok not bad but not great. The place's ambiance over was ok I think it's better to sit outside than inside. Hugo's is a staple in the area and stays consistently good. We've tried many things on their menu and loved them all but our favorite is their breakfast. Our typical order is the Breakfast Burrito w/ Turkey Bacon and Plantains for my wife and I get 3 sides - 2x eggs, Sausage Patties, and a cup of Rosemary Potatoes. Every item arrives (via Postmates) in perfect condition. We don't have to reheat anything or toss anything in the air fryer. It's truly consistent, delicious, and very reliable. We'll be back. This is our go to place for breakfast for any special occasion. You can count on their food to be the same excellent quality each time you go there or order take out from them. I've been cautious about eating restaurant food during the pandemic, but I love Hugo's food so much, I honestly have very little recollection of what the restaurant was like when I arrived to pick up my takeout order because I was so focused on my food. I do remember the restaurant having plentiful outdoor/open-air seating, with clear shields between some of the smaller tables. But apart from that, I was just too excited about my takeout experience to care about much else. The awful design of the freeways in LA means that I am often going out of my way to get to any destination east of me, but thankfully Hugo's is right off the freeway and thus en route most of the time. Despite red-level traffic on the 405 back to the westside, my food was still hot when I could finally eat it almost an hour later. I must give accolades to Christian, who was taking orders at the front of the house and over the phone, for helping me pick through Hugo's overwhelmingly gluten-free friendly menu and recommending the green casserole. He even thought to ask me if I needed napkins and flatware, which I always forget to ask for. Furthermore, when my appointment ended early and I was ready to start my commute home an hour earlier than expected, Christian kindly went to the kitchen when I called to make sure they could start making my order right then so that I could stop by en route without much delay. As mentioned before, Hugo's menu is ginormous - lots of indulgent dishes that the average gluten-intolerant person could never partake in. But I was in a savory, non-salad veggie mood, and Christian's recommendation was still as delicious as the more indulgent options. Portions do not necessarily look super-sized huge, but the food is plenty filling and one can expect to have leftovers. I will say that the green casserole was so tasty that I was tempted to keep eating despite being full. I wish I lived closer so that I could have easier access to their wonderful breakfast options. I have considered that maybe I ought to just order a lot more when I do stop by and stock up on their french toast, pancakes, etc. My waistline probably thanks me that I do not. read more

I picked this place because it is within walking distance of our hotel and had good reviews on Yelp. It's a nice little place with old school charm. We started with coffees for my Bride and me, and the coffee is excellent; good enough to drink black, and refills came like magic. The Kid got an enormous horchata latte, which smells like dessert and evidently tastes awesome. The Kid got eggs Benedict, which he surprisingly loves. Served with a side of rosemary roasted potatoes.He dug right in and never looked up until the plate was bare, stopping only long enough to give me a bite. The hollandaise was piquant, the egg perfectly cooked, and the English muffin was probably baked in-house. My Bride ordered the Chipotle Scramble with a side of rosemary roasted potatoes. What they brought her was a plate full of scrambled eggs and two cheeses with fresh spinach, tomatoes, peppers, onions and scallions served over homemade corn tortillas with sour cream. It was beautifully balanced. I got the Desayuno Fuerte ("Strong Breakfast"). Three fantastic potato pancakes covered with a mound of sautéed spinach, tomatoes, and onions, topped with two poached eggs. It was bright, light, and delicious! If I could make one change, I would add some hot peppers, which would be a perfect grace note. Breakfast for three came with a little sticker shock, because I'm used to eating in Virginia, not L.A., but honestly, $64 before tip isn't out of line out here. And, frankly, it was worth it! Antonio took really good care of us, and I appreciate the touchless payment option. We're planning to come back tomorrow! EDIT: We did come back today! The customer service was still quite good. My chillaquiles were amazing- chunks of tortilla, covered with turkey sausage and sauce, served with sour cream and my chosen side of rosemary potatoes. My Bride is in love with her Energy Pancakes! I can see why; made of a bunch of different seeds and nuts, with fruit and maple syrup. My bite was delicious! The Kid got a breakfast burrito that was so big and stuffed with good food that Bride and I had to eat his side of potatoes. He also had the Black Tea Chai Latte and declared it "divine." Many mention the outstanding food and service. Friday night my friend and I decided to try their studio city location. We sat outside on the patio. The place was clean and inviting with a parking lot. A parking lot is always a plus! Our server's name was Nathan. He was very attentive and patient. Actually 2 other people checked on us during our meal! Nathan had great recommendations. My friend ordered the carbonara and I ordered the Pasta victor. The pasta is made fresh. Ordered: - Nachos (rating: 3/5) as they were tasty, but some of the cheese wasn't melted, was more salsa to chips ratio, and overall cold. - Cuban Sandwich (rating: 2/5) as the sandwich jar great ingredients but overall felt it was very sweet. - Cafe Latte (rating: 5/5) temperature and taste was super on point :) All in all they have great ingredients and appreciate that they cater to gluten free and healthy eaters, but feel like it missed the mark.
