For a breakfast and lunch place it is hard to beat Howells. The owner, Sarah, keeps a nice, light friendly atmosphere. The staff are always friendly and greet you with a smile. The food is healthy and well prepared. We also cater from Howells. Her sandwich platters are always fantastic. We order seafood, vegetable, and chicken sandwiches. They are called tea sandwiches and they receive rave reviews at every party we serve them. We also get dessert from Sarah. We get homemade cookie platters and carrot cake. We have ordered for different kinds of parties, also. One was catered for an 18-year-old's party and we had more common and popular sandwiches such as ham and cheese, roast beef, and tuna fish. Another party was all hot food trays which included chicken marsala. Sarah is great at adapting to the needs of the party and the attendees. read more

What a great find! I've visited here multiple times and tried a wide range of foods and they've all exceeded my expectations. The burgers here are cooked to perfection, the quesadillas are really good and all of the omelets are huge. They use fresh fruit and vegetables and you can definitely tell with the food and smoothies. The portions are huge and you get way more than you pay for. The staff if very attentive and helpful. The owner is very involved and accommodating to any needs I had. I've come here with my parents, my girlfriend, and friends and they've been spot on with their food. Definitely plan on making this a staple during my time in Goshen and would recommend to anyone. Quaint little cafe in the heart of downtown Goshen sets the stage for a delicious dining experience. I ordered a grill veggie wrap... vegetables were raw not cooked... they put lettuce on it ... it was gross. The sweet potato fries were cold not cooked well either. Went to the sunflower cafe this morning for breakfast. I got the protein scramble (4 egg whites, smoked salmon, and avocado on a GF wrap). The food was really good. What sunflower cafe needs to work on is their service aspect. I didn't get a smile at the counter during ordering. I was looking for a diary free option to put in my coffee and I feel like I stood there looking confused for 2 minutes while all the workers were watching the Rachel show on the television behind the counter until someone finally noticed me. When I was leaving I put a tip in the tip jar and said thank you and wasn't acknowledged. Ladies, your food is great, the environment is cute and relaxing... This place used to be a deli. Actually, it pretty well still is. Sadly, Howell's is trying to be something it's not - the food here is all deli fare, awkwardly presented in a cafe/bistro format. The conversion has left a strangely-shaped, angular lobby area leading into a triangular dining area with a few too many tables. Still, the food is decent. We had a Lipman's Salad (relatively bizarre but good - chicken and greens with apples, cranberries, walnuts etc) and Kiersten's Panini (turkey, baby spinach, mozzarella and honey mustard dressing) along with a side of sweet potato fries (good, but nearly cold - they took 15 minutes to arrive). If this place were still a deli, they'd earn an extra star. As it is, they're in a strange limbo where decent, hearty deli food is presented via unnecessary table service. I mean, when I ask for a root beer in a place with table service, I don't need to be brought the bottle (A&W, oh yes) along with a glass of ice. It shatters the illusion somewhat. read more

I walked in and I was barely greeted by a women who seemed incredibly overwhelmed and knew no other way than to take it out and the customers. I had to repeat my order several times, "small fruit salad, iced Americano, everything bagel with veggie cream cheese" because she wasn't paying attention and then barked at me to repeat it again. No deployment method to get the current orders out and also work on clearly pre-ordered items for pick-up. I waited 15 minutes for a bagel. I feel bad, but their system just does not work. I love their smoothie & juices menu and their version of a veggie cream cheese on a blueberry bagel is beyond awesome!! My coworkers and I ordered lunch today from Howell's as we do at least once a month. It was 2 sandwiches, a wrap, a quesadilla and a couple of sides of fries. First it took 1 hour and 50 minutes to get our order. Once we received the order, one of the fries didn't have the side of gravy at all and the Buffalo Chicken Wrap was completely missing the blue cheese. Howell's is what it's supposed to be; a great local spot for breakfast and lunch. A while back they did explore serving dinners and I wish they still did. For the price you certainly couldn't go wrong and the menu was perfect for all tastes. Anyhoo... Back to what they serve now. Breakfast is a home run with the corned beef hash being a favorite but an omelet is always safe. For lunch, they serve a wide variety of sandwiches (the Chatham is a personal fav) and I've never walked out hungry. Whether you're a Goshenite or in town for business, you can't go wrong grabbing a bite at this local favorite. This place, when it was just Sunflower, had a great NYC loft cafe vibe. Then it was merged into the Howells diner from across the street, and everything went to hell in a handbasket. Slow cooking, rude (very) waitresses, cold food, one time a piece of hard plastic in my friend's oatmeal, bagels that take 20 minutes to toast and then are barely warm. Overcharged for a recent lunch when they suggested the substitution when the original item wasn't available. When I have complained about the slow service, stone cold omelet, underdone bagel, being overcharged, I haven't received an apology but instead have just got attitude back. And the worst espresso possible. It tastes like the stovetop stuff. Black mud. Only worth it for the decent smoothies. read more

Sharing on behalf if a friend Suzanne Aleman For the first time in my 41 years, I was kicked out of a place. Let me start at the beginning, I was really excited to meet up with my friend for something to eat and to chat. We haven't had time to catch up in a while, and I was really looking forward to spending time with her. We met at the Howell's and Sunflower Cafe in Goshen. Our experience from the start wasn't fabulous...the waitress was less than friendly, my order was wrong, etc., but we were so happy to be chatting and catching up that we didn't even say anything. I was still eating (anyone who has eaten with me knows how long it takes me to actually finish a meal, but it truly hadn't been very long after we'd gotten our food when she brought the check) when the waitress came back, dropped our check on the table without asking if we'd like anything else, and walked away. Suzanne and I both commented to each other about how we weren't done ordering...I was going to get a smoothie and she was going to get something to go. We let that slide too, and we kept chatting. The next thing we know, another woman comes over to our table and says, "Are you through here?" I was a little taken aback by her tone, and kind of just looked at her. She continued, "Because you ladies have been here a long time, and I have customers waiting for a table. So I need you to get up." Then she walked away. Suzanne and I looked at each other in shock...did she really just give us the boot? We shouldn't have gotten up, but we did. When we went to the register to pay the bill, that woman was standing there. I went up to her and said, "I have to let you know, we weren't done ordering yet..." and before I could finish, she cut me off saying, "Well, I asked if you were through, and you didn't say you wanted anything else." I told her that if she had let me finish, she would have heard me say that we weren't done ordering when the waitress brought our check and walked away. Immediately, this woman became defensive and downright nasty. She went on a rant saying things like "You ladies sat there for hours and I have customers waiting for tables (not totally true, but please hold for my answer) and you got your receipt at 10:35 and then you just sat there taking up a table (again, not true)." I let her finish her rant, and then I said, "First of all, it's a little sad that you don't know how your receipts work. I didn't even park my car until 10:30. 10:35 is probably when I ordered my coffee...that's when the receipt/order was started. Then, we didn't even order our food until probably around 11. So, that's just incorrect information. And please, let me apologize if I missed the sign stating that there is a time limit on how long people can sit at your tables. If I missed that, then I am really sorry." Also important to note that there was no one waiting for a table, people were waiting for take-out, and there were plenty of open seats at the counter. There were also at least two other tables with people who were done with their food, and who were just chatting, and she didn't approach them and ask them to leave. In any case, she just continued on her rant repeating incorrect information and really embarrassing herself with her out-of-line treatment of customers. When she finished, Suzanne asked her who the owner was...well, lo and behold, she is the owner. At which point I said, "You're the owner and you're treating your customers, who have done nothing wrong by the way, like this? You should be absolutely ashamed of yourself." She just shrugged her shoulders. I told her that I am a business owner, and in my wildest dreams I would never treat my customers that way. She looked at me like "are you finished yet?". So, I said to her (more than once) that we would be making it public how badly we were treated by her and she said, in a very nasty tone each time, "Go ahead. I really don't care." Suzanne and I went outside and stood on the sidewalk in complete disbelief about how badly we were treated. After discussing it, Suzanne went back in and handed the woman a piece of paper and a pen so that we could have her name. She told her Sarah, but wouldn't give her last name which was silly as there are public newspaper articles written about Sarah and her cafe. Public information is fair game. So, since Sarah Harrington, owner of Howell's and Sunflower Cafe, doesn't care who knows about her out-of-line behavior and downright disgusting treatment of customers, we thought we'd go ahead and share our experience. Needless to say, we will never be returning to that establishment, and we don't advise you to go there either. Absolutely despicable. read more

I don't often write reviews, but this place is absolute trash. I ordered an "awesome avocado wrap" with a side of home fries. The avocado was sooo far from ripe that it was literally like trying to chew through an undercooked steak. So disappointing. They also use 0% seasonings, the home fries were undercooked as well and completely tasteless. The only reason they're still in business is because food options in Goshen are so limited. Howell's has been my favorite go to lunch spot since I started traveling to Goshen for work over 5 years ago. They have a great "standard" menu and an excellent variety of daily specials, including some of the best soups I've ever had. There have been a number of changes to both the dining room and the counter area in recent months, so yes, it feels a bit less like a deli than it used to, and that's not a bad thing! With the new carpeting and wall coverings the often packed lunchtime dining room is far less noisy and I find my frequent lunches more enjoyable. The counter area, which now hides the prep area and has a bar and hi-top tables, is a great spot when I'm in by myself, or want to catch up on the latest sports news on the flatscreen. But the real reason to go to Howell's is the food. Consistently good and fresh, modestly priced, and with enough variety to satisfy many tastes, including my vegetarian co-workers. It's kept me coming back again and again, week after week, for over 5 years. read more

Went for breakfast today and had a delicious meal. I got the California skillet, coffee and a mixed berry explosion smoothie. The food and the atmosphere are wonderful. My server was personable and attentive. There are some staff here that are less than friendly, unfortunately, which is why I don't come here as often as I did before Howell's and Sunflower Cafe combined. All of the girls who worked at Sunflower before the two restaurants combined were pleasant and friendly, however afterwards, some of the older female employees who I assume worked at Howells are so unpleasant that I took a break from coming here. read more

To begin with I placed an order to go and waited almost 15 minutes while food ordered after mine was not ordered but prepared before my eyes. It wasn't until the cashier heard me comment that I was getting very annoyed that she reminded the people prepping the food of my order. And I only had quiche and salad, not a wrap or panini that needed to be assembled. When I left, I realized I had not been asked what kind of dressing while others had.
