I don't know what happened here. We went back to this place after a while and it seems like everyone who was working there on this day was distracted. It wasn't overly crowded, but I looked around I saw a lot of leftover food from the people who ate and left. Some came in waiting to served then left after being ignored or not noticed. First off It was as if the servers couldn't understand who was supposed to clean the tables? The Service was painfully slow, but it was morning so they may have had a lot of takeout orders or shorthanded? Most of the breakfast meals came with home fries and the three orders we had each of the fries were ice cold and eggs overcooked. Orders had arrived out of order and the simple things such as toast, which was part of the breakfast orders either came as we were finishing the meal or didn't come at all. I was looking forward to a good experience like I had the 1st time but me and my family were disappointed. At least the coffee was drinkable...but we had to work to get the server's attention each time we wanted a refill. They really need to do better.... read more

Fantastic deli! Very small but cute little deli for both sitting or take out. I had a sunflower wrap and I added some chicken and my husband had a BBQ hamburger. It was light but filling, exactly how I wanted it. Service isn't the expectation but served well. People were courteous but business! The staff here was very friendly and helpful when ordering and answering questions about the menu. The place itself is warm and rustic, nice to enjoy a regular cafe, that not overly crowded or expensive. The pink me up was delicious and refreshing and the pineapple citrus juice was yummy and normally juices are not that great, but I found there was good balance with sweetness in it. For the grilled cheese with ham and egg, was good, but really wish it had way more cheese and butter toasted every inch of the bread. Food just is not the same anymore. I have never in my life had a corned beef hash served with egg whites to "bind it". Please stop doing this. It's disgusting and destroys the flavor. Google search what corned beef hash looks like and compare to what I was just served. This is the owners doing apparently, which I was told after I sent it back. Decided to try a different spot to pick up breakfast today. I got the Hoboken Skillet, mainly because the name, but the taste was what stood out. It was mouthwatering delicious. The website was quick and attentive. It was crowded in the morning but considering the flavorful breakfast I had - I can only imagine that people flock for other menu items. The coffee was not bad either. They also have a wide variety of smoothies that I want to check out but didn't want to take too much time trying to figure out which flavor concoction I wanted. I decided to give this place another try, hoping for a better experience. Unfortunately, it was disappointing. After choosing to sit down and order, my friend realized we were short on time and wouldn't be able to enjoy a relaxed meal. When the older waitress brought our drinks, one was incorrect. She came back with the correct drink and we informed her that we'd like to switch our order to-go due to time constraints, her response was surprisingly rude. She asked, 'I'm going to ask WHY??' in a tone that left us all taken aback. We explained our situation, but instead of understanding, she gave us attitude and remarked that we should have ordered at the counter if we wanted takeout. We sat there stunned as she pointed in the direction of where to place our order. To add to the disappointment, we decided to try the smoothies. Unfortunately, neither of them tasted good. Mine had a strong earthy bitterness flavor which was strange and there were no ingredients to do this and my gf said hers tasted like dirt water. The food was also disappointing and lacked flavor. Nov 2021- driving back into NYC from a hike near Wallkill area and we needed a restroom stop so we took the next available exit and ended up in this quaint little town Goshen. We spotted 2 little cafes on the Main Street but decided on Howells because it looked more homely. On a Saturday afternoon there were 1-2 families seated in the main dining area. We weren't really hungry but thought best to get a snack if we wanted to use their restroom. So we bought coffees and slices of pie. Both were good, the pie warm and homemade tasting and the cappuccino nice with a good amount of foam. The customer service was friendly. We ended up talking stories with one of the workers or owner? The restroom was clean and overall the entire restaurant looked clean. They have a 2nd larger room with lots of tables. That area was more quiet and provided a nice picture window view of the Main Street. I'd recommend stopping by this place and checking them out if you're nearby. read more

My friend and I came to Howell's Cafe and the smoothies were delicious. I got the Breakfast On The Go. It comes with, mixed berries, banana, yogurt, homemade granola, and pineapple juice. However I took out the homemade granola and pineapple juice. I replaced the pineapple juice for milk and just got rid of the granola. My friend got a drink that I don't recall the name of and she said it was delicious. I tried it as well and it was amazing. Me and some other friends came and I got the same drink and it did not disappoint. It was very good. My friend got a Buffalo chicken wrap and she loved it. She said the chicken is very good and is seasoned very well. My sister and I came this would be my third time coming to Howells Cafe and I got the same thing and all I can say is it never disappoints. My sister got an almond coconut mango smoothie. It comes with banana, pineapple, mango, strawberry, chia seeds, silvered almonds & coconut milk. She asked for no almonds. She said it wasn't really the flavor she was looking for. My friend and I went to go get breakfast but we were a little late breakfast ends at 11:30. So I got a cheese quesadilla with avocado. The avocado came inside of the quesadilla something I've never had before and it was so amazing. My friend got cheese fries and they were delicious. I keep hoping this place will get good again. But in the past 2 1/2 years, I am repeatedly disappointed. This morning all I wanted was pineapple juice with ginger and just a teeny bit of strawberries. I have strawberry juice with sugar. No taste of either pineapple or ginger. I guess they have and anything goes attitude. I'm guessing they were sold, and that they will no longer be the place that I used to rely on for good food, fresh juices and smoothies made exactly to order. They had a list of their daily specials, which included a peach salad with grilled chicken. It being summertime, with fresh peaches for sale everywhere, I figured this was offered as a "special" for that reason. I told the waitress I thought it would be fresh... but that the peaches were canned. Actually, no, the waitress corrected (gaslit) me, she said it was from a "fruit cup." Which -- newsflash -- is the same thing: old peach slices suspended in corn syrup. Also the chicken pieces were cold, and sitting in their salad station were so incredibly dry, that I gave up on eating it. And then they make you stand back in line to pay your check, which was very annoying after a crappy meal. This place looks cute from the outside but don't let that fool you. There are other places in this town. Yes, their juices were good. Just don't stray too far from the simple menu items. Stick with eggs or a BLT. Or better, just try someplace else that makes things with a little more thought. read more

The server Jill clearly doesn't like her job. We have had lunch at Howell's Café about 10 times and barely do we receive from her a "welcome back" or any help with the menu. Consider today's events: 1) Jill asked for our order as soon as she arrived with water. 2) After we asked for a little time to look at the menu she returned 20 minutes later. 3) When lunch was served, Jill cast our plates on the table as if she were feeding her dogs. 4) During the meal, I almost chipped a tooth on a pit lodged in an olive (the other 20 were pit-less in my salad) and when I complained, all Jill could say is "Pits are in there sometimes." The cashier, on the other hand, apologized profusely -- saying they all should have been removed. In sum, Jill should be in a people-less line-of-business. Took a chance and ordered from them (via DoorDash) because I was looking for a place offering some good, healthy breakfast options. The food was absolutely amazing. We ordered 2 skillets, the Greek and the Bostonian and a short stack with eggs and a side of bacon. I think those were the thickest pancakes we'd ever seen for the price. Overall a great experience!! Ummmm, what the frig happened to this place?! It's been envaded by a hoard of angry employees and the food and juices are seriously mediocre now. The place is a madhouse every single time you walk in, you're spoken down to by the (new?) head cashier who replaced the lovely young woman who used to be there. She makes derogatory remarks about customers on the phone and when they leave. My juice, the Pineapple Citrus, tasted like Palmolive dish soap and I've had it in the past without the soapy aftertaste. The young man making the juice leaves the same pair of gloves on, I sat there for 30 minutes and saw him grab raw veg and fruit, then grab the dirty dishrag, go into the sink and then go back and grab more fruits and veg with the same gloves. It's freaking disgusting. Whatever happened to this place, it's wrong. It's not working. This was my go-to place for lunch every day, now I avoid the place like the plague. read more

Kudos to little Goshen, NY for this bustling cafe that offers hearty sandwiches, salads, fresh pressed juices, smoothies, gluten free treats, and breakfast all day in a laid back comfortable atmosphere of sprawling tables and exposed brick. While the concept is 5 stars, the execution is more like 3.5. I selected a breakfast burrito with smoked salmon, egg white, and avocado in a spinach wrap. The salmon was exceptionally fresh, but the overall flavor profile was one note with the savory avocado, eggs, and salmon. It would benefit from some diced jalapeño for kick or a few slices of tomato or red pepper to add brightness and contrast. I selected the Happy Buddha juice to pair with my sandwich - beet, apple, spinach, lime, ginger. It was delivered fresh, frothy, with a few ice cubes to cool it but not so many as to water it down - much appreciated detail. The apple dominated and I could not detect the ginger until the last few sips. Slightly disappointing. Great concept with plenty of promise. Will return when in the neighborhood. read more

Calling an eating establishment a deli/cafe is as monotonous as it gets. The name is thrown around everywhere these days, without necessarily correlating with the food offered at said establishment. I'm happy to report that Howell's is very much a Deli and a Cafe, and delivers extremely well in both of those regards. First, I'd like to applaud Howell's on their daily specials, because not only do they change every day, but they change on their WEBSITE every day, which is absolutely crucial when bringing customers to the door. And, it's not some bootleg website or half-assed Facebook link, it's a legit service that is constantly updated, and it works. I can't tell you how many times I've been unsure about what to get for lunch, popped onto Howell's website, and ordered as a result of reading their daily specials. Bravo, bravo, bravo, Howell's. So, about these specials. Teriyaki tuna and citrus salad, roast beef and mozzarella paninis, etc. The menu is always so different than you're typical, boring "deli" or "cafe." The food is consistently delicious. My coworkers and I have ordered here dozens of times, and it's always an option that always cures our lunch desires. For a breakfast and lunch place it is hard to beat Howells. The owner, Sarah, keeps a nice, light friendly atmosphere. The staff are always friendly and greet you with a smile. The food is healthy and well prepared. We also cater from Howells. Her sandwich platters are always fantastic. We order seafood, vegetable, and chicken sandwiches. They are called tea sandwiches and they receive rave reviews at every party we serve them. We also get dessert from Sarah. We get homemade cookie platters and carrot cake. We have ordered for different kinds of parties, also. One was catered for an 18-year-old's party and we had more common and popular sandwiches such as ham and cheese, roast beef, and tuna fish. Another party was all hot food trays which included chicken marsala. Sarah is great at adapting to the needs of the party and the attendees. read more
