I don't know why I have never written a review for this place, but I have been coming here for years and years for my annual smog check and vehicle registration. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. I first discovered this gem probably 14 years ago...I've had my truck for 15 years..through a co-worker. I've always been treated warmly and welcoming, initially by owner Carl, and since by the wonderful employees. If you are limited on time, as I am; or if you absolutely detest standing in line at the DMV, as I do; this is the place to go. One-stop shopping for smog check and registration. The left side of 7AM is a tough one for me, so I can't imagine having to be into work and helping customers at that time! So it's always a pleasure finding businesses where the employees are not only able to function, but do it all with a smile. That's exactly what I found when I hit up Howard's Chevron for a routine smog check recently. See each year I try my hardest to get my car registered on time, but inevitably, something always goes wrong and I miss my deadline. So I hit up Yelp to try and find a smog station that could take me after 5PM, and I came across Howard's Chevron. But I really have Richard, at Half/Price Auto Repair, to thank for the referral. It's so nice to see #Coopetition in action! So anyway, Howard's stops doing smogs after 5:30 (apparently they need a Level 3 Trained Smog Tech available, and he goes home), so I wasn't able to get my smog in before my registration expired, but I decided to go in the next morning and hustle it over to the DMV, hence the experience at 7AM. Well, I thought the DMV opened at 7:30, but my memory ain't what it used to be, and they actually open at 8AM, so I ended up sitting in my car, entering the info on my phone, and sadly paying the $6 late fee YET AGAIN. Moral of the story is no amount of trying can get you out of any fees at the DMV, so just do yourself the favor and get your shit done on time. BUT, if you are a last minute person like me, and you can make it there by 5:30, Howard's Chevron will save your butt and $6, all with a big ol' smile! read more

I had a light on my dashboard and drove to the station for help. John tested my battery, which was brand new and found that I needed a new alternator. We stopped by around 10:30 am on Saturday, April 1, 2023. My daughter goes in to use the restroom while we're filling up our gas tank on a long road trip from Oregon. My daughter comes out so I can go to the bathroom and I go in and she's rude to me and rudely says "I'm cleaning it." We saw the sign that says restrooms for customers only - does $65 worth of gas make me a customer? Apparently she was glaring at my child as she went to and from the bathrooms also. I'm not sure what we did to piss this lady off, but Howard really should hire friendly staff. At least people that aren't rude to the customers. read more

Today i headed out to support a local business that was making hand sanitizer for the public ( A huge Thank You to Ferino Distillery on 4th St a family owned business ) to purchase some for my self and friends , as i was leaving i noticed my tire was very low on air so i knew the Chevron on 4th & Galletti way was open so i pulled in saw a Air sign but it was behind a fence i got out of my car looked around for a while at three open bays with cars in them and not a person anywhere , so i went inside their little mart and asked the man where the air was or if it was available he said oh yeah we have air but we charge $ 2.00 now for it .... Wow really ... I just turned around said thanks and left as i was walking past the bays i could hear snickering ... really nice. read more

John and his crew having been taking care of my cars for years. They are the absolute best because: 1. They answer the phone. 2. They make appointments within a day or two. 3. Their prices are in line with other repair shops, and half the price of dealerships. 4. The work is done on time and the agreed upon price. 5. AND BEST OF ALL: You can trust them to not lie to you about what needs to be done. There is no BS. They are honest and accurate about what needs to be done, never play those expensive dealership games. John listens carefully to the issue, pokes around a little, and has been 100% accurate about what the problem is. If you suspect, as you should, anything a new car dealership is trying to get you to pay for, it's well worth checking with John first. 3 times Carl and the folks at Howard's Chevron have saved my butt. A dusty, overladen art car that has been to the playa more times than is reasonable has pulled into their lot three times and, three times, they have had the repair done by early the next day (it never gets to them before 4:55 pm!), with a smile, and cheaply. They've given me a lift to my hotel and rolled my heavy car into the garage overnight to protect my dusty stuff. Thank you, thank you, thank you Howard's Chevron and staff! This station is in a crappier part of town but they have separate nozzles for each grade so they get 5 stars from me! Techron is one of the better fuel additives, which Chevron uses in all of their fuels. Ingress and egress isn't bad for cars with very little ground clearance. I didn't go into the store or use their service station, so I can't offer any input there. Getting back on the fwy, depending on which one and in which direction can be tricky. read more

This station is the business of taking your money and giving you bad service, they use predatory tactics to charge for service that is not good , unprofessional staff and uneducated service techs, bad customer service, no knowledge on how to jack up cars safely, no clear education from service reps on job being done, called manager to express dissatisfaction and he hung up on me. You would be better off going to someone more reputable! And pass this place right by bad area anyways.... read more

These guys were great! My daughters were on a road trip from Santa Barbara, CA and had just left Virginia City, NV when the check engine light came on. They called me and I looked up service stations on Yelp and Howard's Chevron was top of the list and had good reviews. Called the service station and talked with Karl and explained the situation. He said they would be able to look at the car and gave me directions. The girls were there within the half hour and the car taken right in. They diagnosed the problem and the girls were back on their road trip in about two hours. I have a 1990 Ford Econoline shuttle bus - it is my work vehicle and NOT something I can junk and get a new one... I go to Howard's Chevron for all my repair needs - the service is fairly priced, honest and reliable. I never have to worry they are going to fix something that doesn't need to be fixed or ignore something that shouldn't be ignored. They vacuum the carpet and wash the windshield - and hey - they still have full service gas for when the weather is nasty! We just moved here from California, and the tire pressure light came on. Since it had recently snowed and it was wet and cold outside, we didn't want to delay adding air, so the first gas station we came to after leaving DMV was this Chevron Station, so we parked the car right next to the air pressure hose. I was looking inside my door for the correct amount of air needed, and a Chevron employee approached asking if he could help. Wow, was I pleased, #1 getting friendly helpful service and #2 free air for my tires (you pay at the gas stations in California, at least the ones I've used). Howards Chevron Was the best place to take your car to when Carl and Howard were alive. I miss them terribly. Now I took my car in when the engine light came on and the mechanic John erased the code and told me he didn't know what the code meant and if it showed up and the car did something to bring it back and let him know. Well the car did do something, it stopped and stranded my son and I on Sparks Blvd and Disc Dr and we had to have the car towed but it sure wasn't back to Howards since then mechanic acted like he didn't want to put any effort in to help me and I have been taking my car there for the past 30 years. read more

This is a most unusual mechanic shop! I was referred to Howard Chevron by a friend, after Moving to Nevada few years ago. I have lived in many cities and states in US and have never in my life found a mechanic this honest, no exaggeration either. I am surprised every time I have used this mechanic shop when I get the bill, as I'm expecting the usual "extra charges"and "mysterious other problems I didn't know I had", from most of my experiences in my life with mechanic's, being a women. When I tell friends (back East) how much I payed for the work done? Every time they tell me what a deal I got. (one of my friends being a mechanic in FL) The work is solid, and issues resolved, I even got my smog done there as their price is as low as the comparable lowest price's in Reno on smog tests. I will have all my car's serviced there for every detail, as business's like this one are rare. I see I am not the only one who realizes that either ,cause every time I have been there they have all their bays filled with car's and some waiting in the lot. But even when they seem real busy, they still get my car done within 24hours (for big job's)as they open at 7am and work I believe til 5pm, maybe 6pm, not sure.
