Howards Cafe is located in the Sunwave Plaza (of SUNrise Highway and WAVErly ave.) There used to be a movie-theater here called the Sunwave theater, with a Play-World and Rockbottom next door, where the Staples and Duane Reade now are. Howards is an economic place to get a hamburger and some drinks. They have a menu of about twenty burgers featuring different combinations of toppings. . . and cost about $9.75. . .. Decent waffle fries. . . also comes with salad (for the table. . . half a head of iceberg lettuce, sliced tomato and onion, croutons, and choice of three dressings. This special also comes with bottomless pitchers of beer, sangria or soda. I have never tested the limits of this special, though have pushed it pretty far, and the servers are always accommodating (choice of Bud or Bud Light). So my wife & i just had lunch at Howard's.. so never judge a place by looking at it. So we both had burgers and I had a French onion soup as well. Our burgers were cooked perfectly as we ordered and the soup was great.. Our waitress was outstanding & friendly. So our meals consisted of salad for 2 a bowl of soup 2 burgers drinks and 1 dessert. $45 bucks. WOW such a great deal.. We're sold and definitely will be coming back to try more items on the menu.. This place is an absolute hidden gem! Everyone here is so friendly and the food is amazing! We had the rebaked wings which were very crunchy and good. Then we had the garlic bread with mozzarella which was good too and for entrees we had burgers with fries which were cooked perfectly and delicious. Really good food and good service. As a kid I came to Howard's regularly with my parents and loved it. It's been 24 years since I left LI, but was back in a. Recent visit to my parents and we came for lunch. Great decision! I had their steak sandwich for lunch and it was really good. Real sliced steak, cooked to order with melted mozzarella in garlic bread...wonderful. At first glance the prices are a little high, but when you factor in the fact that salad and soda are included - it's really not that bad. The way I figured it, if I had spent $6 on the salad and soda (or beer, if you choose that option, which is available - lunch for a really good sandwich would have been $12.95 - well within reason. If they had a slightly updated decor and better draft beer selection - I would have given them 5 stars. Having said that - next time in town - I'll be back! read more

I had been dying to try this place for years but kept forgetting about it. I was in the area with my mother and suggested we grab lunch there. Wow! First off, let me say that my mom is the pickiest eater on the planet. Seriously! She has the pallet of a 4 year old. (No offense mom!) She absolutely loooovvvessss this place as do I. We both loved the salad bowl. How awesome is it that they bring you all the ingredients and you make your salad just the way you like it?!? There is enough for 4 people so we ended up taking some home. :) I had they seafood platter which consisted of broiled scallops, sole, a baked clam and shrimp in a scampi sauce. It was delicious! Staff is the friendliest around, the beer is always ice cold.. the salad that comes with dinner (fresh lettuce, sliced red onion, sliced tomato, bacon bits and big crunchy croutons, all in separate dishes) is always fresh, and the prices are VERY reasonable. Also included is a carafe of white wine, sangria, or certain beers. Don't expect the equivalent of a $50 meal. The menu is typical of what you would (or should) expect to be served in a bar & grill, with specials posted on the illuminated blackboard. Howard's is a locals kind of place. The beer is cheap, the wine is cheap, the portions are big, can't complain about too much! It's not the most aesthetically pleasing place, pretty sure they haven't updated anything since it was built, but it adds that much more character to the whole place. Would have liked to try the food here, but my mom and I did not get the chance to. We walk in and are immediately greeted (yelled at) by a guy behind the bar asking if we wanted a table. We said yes, and he told us to go to the back. There were several tables eating, but it was dark, dingy, and uninviting. There was not a server in sight or anyone to actually seat us and give menus, so we picked a table and sat down. After 10-15 minutes went by and still no server, we were fed up and walked out. But, oh no no, sir, these are not well liquor shots. This is whatever your cold, little heart desires. For instance, I drank Jameson (several times in fact) for $3 a pop. Not bad, considering most other places you go will range from $6-$9. Sound good? Yeah I thought so. But, Jay...does it get better? Oh, you bet your ass it does. $4 pints. Not good enough? How about $5 mini-pitchers? STILL not good enough? Oh for crying out loud...alright, how about ALL YOU CAN DRINK beer, wine, or sangria with the order of any one of their gourmet burgers? If that doesn't please you, well then...that's just too damn bad, Hitler. Atmosphere is light and airy. Pleasant and fun. When you walk in, there is a bar area to the right, seperated by a soundproof wall and door from a restaraunt area to the left. Both areas are filled with locals and random stragglers such as myself. I like the salad tower that comes out first. I'm grateful that Yelp let me know they have waffle fries (it wasn't listed on the menu.) "The Something Special" AKA French Dip got two thumbs up from Wifey- as did the sweet potato fries that came with it. I liked my burger; bacon cheeseburger. The bacon was round, the pickle was crisp. As long as you are eating you get unlimited wine, sangria, or beer. It's a good deal. I wasn't prepared for how this place is a bar with a food section. The service is great. Coming here you have to go in with an open mind expecting to get a cheap quality meal for the cheap price you'll pay. I'd give them 4 stars for the endless beer/wine that seems to be included, but dont ask cause they'll say it's not endless. Ive tried burgers and a french dip. Which I wouldnt give more then a star or two. I would avoid the sangria as it tastes like bad red wine with Maraschino cherry juice spooned in. If your looking for a reasonably priced decent burger, you'd be better off hitting the Burger Shack in patchogue, Reeses 1900 or going to Porters in bellport for the $10 beer & burger daily special. read more

I have come here way too many times to remember. Howard's Cafe is a restaurant that does inexpensive dining and drinks the right way. Howard's Cafe has an ambiance, culture, and style of restaurant that is reminiscent of simpler days gone by on Long Island that is hard to find anywhere else. The place reminds me of a 1990's restaurant and bar. The staff is among the friendliest and most mature for sure. You will NOT find a snobby teenager or haughty young know it all serving your food. The staff here has a genuine kindness and helpful attitude. The salad here is probably one of the best I have ever had. Each salad comes with three styles of dressings which are all delicious: Italian, Blue Cheese and French...sooooo good! The lettuce is fresh and crunchy. There are SO many different styles of burgers to choose from, all of which are delicious and flavorful. My favorite meal to get here is the salad, a burger (with a side of fries) and it comes with pitchers of beer or sangria or wine, you get ALL of this for just over 10 dollars. Because it was Memorial Day there weren't too many people in there so we got our pick of where we could sit. We chose a booth in the center of the restaurant part. The decor is normal pub style decor, with sports memorabilia. The staff was courteous and accommodating. We decided on the gourmet burgers, which come with a salad, a carafe of beer, wine or sangria and different types of fries. The burgers were cooked to perfection. So delicious!!!! Baked Clams with Parmesan cheese....Terrible...my wife had Chicken Barrie...Chicken was deep fried and had no taste. I had Sliced London Broil with Mushroom Gravy, no taste. All food is as bland as can be, no seasoning whatsoever. Stay away. The Bacon on the chicken was days old. The seating is not as comfortable as Ballfield Bleachers. What a great surprise. It's by all means not a four star restaurant, but its places like these that still make dinning out enjoyable and reasonable. Coming in, it was confusing because there's a sign saying wait to be seated, but no hostess stand, but we were promptly helped to our seats. Not many food variety, but so many choices of burgers. For 12.95 you can choose a gourmet burger met with fries and a huge salad. The french onion soup tasted weird, i think because of the wheat bread they but in it. The presentation of the salad was noted many times below and loved who they give you three choices of dressing (Italian, thousand island and blue cheese) Also give you onions, croutons and bacon bits.
