My experience started bad and got worse from there. We we told a 10 minute wait to be seated--no problem. What we weren't told was it would another 45 minutes to be served. I chose my meal only to be told AFTER waiting that they were out of my selected item--why wouldn't you tell someone what isn't available as you hand them a menu? The coffee was cold and we weren't offered a refill until our meals were ready--45 minutes after we sat down. The meal was awful--ordered an omelette, got something in a skillet (which was a different menu choice). Ask for white toast, was given wheat, which the server dropped on the table and kept going. If you don't have the staff to run a restaurant, then either have fewer seats or hire some help. Can you give 0 stars? Will NOT be coming here again. read more

What a cute, little shop! I absolutely loved the homey feel and interior of House. This is a perfect spot to enjoy a nice lunch with a loved one. Service was nice and courteous. I had the half and half special and paired up The Frenchie sandwich with The King Khan salad. The sandwich definitely had a unique and complex aroma to it. With each bite, I experienced another taste as my palate opened up. Not to mention, the bread used for the sandwich was a great choice. The crunchiness and texture was just awesome. As for the salad, I didn't expect it to be filling... I never get full from salads. However, each bite proved to be very rich in texture and taste. I should have written a review of House earlier, as I'm a big fan of their afternoon and evening fare: their tomato soup and Grilled cheese sandwich is one of the best comfort food experiences you can have! Well, we decided to try them for brunch this past Saturday, and I can tell you it was decidedly delicious! I had the breakfast quesadilla, made with braised pork and topped with guacamole, green salsa, and two eggs. It looks so good, I felt bad eating it! Well after the first bite, I heartily dug in. My partner had the open-faced omelet, with zucchini, tomato, and goat cheese served in a small cast iron skillet. Yet another delicious dish, and the added bonus is that the cast iron kept the omelet nice and warm throughout the meal. All in all a great experience, on a sunny morning! read more

Outstanding sandwiches! Visiting my son at Swarthmore and we headed to Media for lunch. As usual, Yelp guided us to this neighborhood gem! We walked and checked the restaurants on West State and we just could not decide. We were looking for a great casual restaurant with outdoor seating and a local vibe. We found it all at this small casual hipstery sandwich shop! House is very small with only a few tables inside and a few tables outside to sit. The feeling you get inside is a young, college town, fresh, organic, inexpensive and cool place to grab a cup of soup, a great panini, an interesting salad and some home made ice tea! And that's exactly what we all did. House offers a two or three item combo with choice of soup, salad and half a sandwich as a way to sample all. The tomato soup was creamy and delicious, not your typical acidic tomato soup. This is a must have along with the Harvest grilled cheese sandwich. The winter salad had fresh black mission figs, rosemary infused macrona almonds (I need more of these!), creamy chevere cheese and an amazing cranberry clementine vinaigrette dressing. I really could have eaten a full salad and a whole sandwich! On to the sandwiches. The Harvest was terrific! Creamy aged white cheddar cheese, apple slices, grilled onions and crunchy bacon grilled paninni style! We all shared an extra one of these on top of the half sandwiches we ordered. I had the Slugger, an interesting combination of braised pork, Kimchi slaw and white cheddar all melted together between grilled sour dough bread. This is a solid but pretty expensive Soup , salad , brunch place. Everything was good. Nothing was great. Food tasted homemade. The service was good but I had a hard time getting a Turkey club. It's not on the menu but they have all the ingredients. They did relent reluctantly. If you have it why not accommodate the guest. I didn't think I was asking for the moon. The sandwiches were all good. So were the soups. The decor was meh and it was chilly in the restaurant despite it not being too cold today. I can't imagine what a fridged day feels like. Went here for Saturday brunch with my mom and brother. We ordered the shakshuka, the full monty, and the salmon eggs benedict along with a side of mac and cheese and the butterscotch cake. The shakshuka was alright, but a bit flavorless, and I thought hey would have baguette bread with it, but it was smaller kind of bread that wasn't as airy as baguette bread. It was a 3 out of 5. The salmon eggs benedict came with potatoes that were really small and were too crunchy, so we were basically eating pieces of burnt potato. However the eggs benedict was alright and was also a 3/5. The full monty was a bit underwhelming and I wish I got the croque madame. The waiter gave me a description of savory and sweet, which I'm all about. But really it was just french toast with cheese and bacon. It wasn't sold well and wasn't as good as others I've tried. The reason why I didn't get the croque madame is because it didn't include the french toast, which from my brunch experience most places have that as the bread. The mac and cheese was average and could have had more flavor. The butterscotch cake was like any other pound cake you could get in a store, but did taste more "homemade." The ambience of the restaurant was really good. It is very much a cute place to go with family or friends and the waiters are so nice. I like the set up they had and I feel like it wasn't crowded (seating setup-wise) like other brunch places where you could turn your head and enter the other tables personal space from how close you are. My two favorites are the Salmon BLT which is made with smoked salmon, and the He-Man which is a Panini made with the juiciest meatloaf I've ever had. But the best choice is the panini...on Le Bus breads with things like homemade mayonnaise, apple wood smoked bacon, avocado and the House touch (lovingly and gently prepared by hand and delivered with a comment, compliment or casual conversation that makes you glad you live in Media.) My personal favorite is the King Kahn...chicken, hot sauce, caramelized onions and some blue cheese. It is so good I find it difficult to try the specials, despite the consistent lure of daily descriptions. You can sit outside with your dog (usually a dog bowl of water is provided) or inside...there are about six tables. Often you are treated to a sample of something special, a soup or a piece of cake, just enough to make you feel appreciated, your appetite acknowledged. We went for lunch on a busy Saturday. After forgetting about us for a while, someone came to take our order. The kitchen was terribly busy, so our server brought us a little something to nibble on which was very good. Everything we ordered was delicious and hot when it came to the table. They do brunch of Saturdays and Sundays, which was also delicious. Unfortunately out of the tomato soup, but I traded some of my grilled cheese for some of my husband's brunch brisket. What an awesome little surprise! I had a rare day out in the 'burbs for work and stopped into House for lunch. All I have to say is - I wish I had this in the city! I went for the best of both worlds and got a half sandwich, half soup deal - half of a fresh tomato, mozzarella, basil panini with balsamic and EVOO; and a cup of fresh (and I mean FRESH) tomato soup. They use Metropolitan Bakery bread and the ingredients are top-notch. The panini was toasted to perfection. My coworkers also ordered some sandwiches and salads that looked delicious. This place is tiny, so don't expect to find a table with a big group of people. I had jury duty in downtown Media, and with a 90-minute lunch break, my options were plentiful. Gorgeous day, so I walked into this place since I wanted a quiet place to sit outside. Plus, I digged the name. I was salivating over their menu of paninis and salads that were made to order. The soup of the day looked refreshing! I ordered the watermelon gazpacho, topped with goat cheese and mint and also their house salad with apples, walnuts, and blue cheese. I was uber stoked. Inside the restaurant was pretty small, so luckily I scored one of the two tables outside. It's off a side street, but it still allowed some much-needed people watching. The soup and salad was the perfect combination for lunch. Soup was chilled, and the mint added a nice coolness for which I savored. The salad had just enough "stuff" that wasn't overbearing. There was about 5 of us that ate together and there wasn't one complaint about the food. Everything tasted fresh and delicious! I highly recommend the sandwich Jersey Joe! I've always heard great reviews of this place, but looking at their menu, I could never find anything that was quite my taste. One day I called them to see what their soup was, and it turns out it was one of my favorites, potato soup! I ordered a small to go and was delighted to see that they included 2 pieces of freshly sliced french baguette. This is by far, the most unique sandwich shop in Media, and well worth the trip there. Atmosphere - A quaint little storefront off of Jackson Street is the entrance to this little gem. Inside, is a mix of unique photography and eclectic art, along with unique items you won't find anywhere else. There is seating both in and outside, however, VERY little room for dining. Off peak dining is fine, but lunch rush you may want to plan on eating or taking out. Waitstaff - Counter help brought our food out, however, was very pleasant and recommended some good things. Really made my wife and I feel like we were at home even thought it was out first time dining there. They had a delivery come, which we had to move our tables to accommodate the size, and she provided us with on the house brownies. Great service and awesome brownies, a nice treat when we didn't feel inconvenienced. Food - Hands down amazing. I had the 'King Khan' sandwich, which was phenomenal. Crisp bread, amazing buffalo sauce, really a unique take on the sandwich with the caramelized onions. My wife had the Stilton grilled cheese and Shiva side salad. Really fresh greens and delicious paring between cheese on the sandwich made this a homerun. Came out really hot and melty, but the kind of way where you don't mind licking the fingers it's so tasty. Intangibles - Fresh teas are available in the fridge, but I went with the Joe's lemon tea. What a refreshing regionally provided treat! Highly recommended for those who appreciate quality and a very, very reasonable price. Mentioned that they do catering as well, which we'll be taking advantage of in the future. First off, let me clarify that I grew up in Media and I remember when my dad got his hair cut where the first desk is now. I also remember when it was a tea room that was just lovely. But now that it's House... well, i wish i had gone there sooner. I don't get lunch in Media ever because, well, have you been to Media during the day? But I have been for Dinner and Brunch. The food for dinner was unreal good. Smaller (READ: REASONABLE) portions, delicious food. If you are in a rush, this may not be the place for you. Sometimes the staff is a little kookie. The ambiance is wonderful. But the reason i keep going back, and i am being 100% serious, is the music. Let me explain. I am 33 years old. I was born in 1980. I was a teen through the 90's and a weird one at that. I was (and still am) a music lover. This place plays the oddest but best 90's weird alt music. It isn't loud. If you weren't listening for it, you wouldn't notice. But it's there, and it's awesome. I've tried to tell someone every time I'm there, while I'm on my way out, that i come for the food, but i stay for the music. But no one is ever there when I'm leaving :( My husband is a vegetarian, and there are some nice dinner selections for him. The staff, as previously mentioned, is a little kookie. One night the hostess rang up my card wrong, so she re-rang it, but did the math wrong. Tipping fixed it, but still, it was odd. The service isn't fast for dinner. But it isn't painfully slow. The tables are close to each other, and it is filled with Swarthmore and Media "elite". So brace thyself. But the food? Awesome. Me and my family went here for brunch one Sunday. It was so nice we sat outside, which is awesome they have outside seating even though it's limited. I ordered the BLT with salmon and let me tell you, it was amazing. I even tried my husbands French toast and that was really good too. In Swarthmore they're very few options for really good food. When we looked on yelp to find a place hardly any held a rating of 4 or greater. However, this place is a great exception. We ordered split pea soup which was excellent and spices perfectly. I split the roasted chicken with potato smash and green beans and it was delicious. The chicken was moist and the mash potatoes and veg had just the right amount of seasoning to complement the entree as a whole. For dessert we splurged and tried the butterscotch cake. It was so good. The richness of the cake contrasted with the airy whipped cream it was served with made for a scrumptious combination. All in all, the portions sizes were just right. I was able to split both the chicken entree and the dessert and feel completely that I had enough to eat. I would definitely come back. Ps maybe it's just me but I really appreciate when I can observe a restaurant's visible effort to establish an inviting and elegant atmosphere and this place definitely does. read more
