The company I work at comes here every week. I order the pig dipper every so often. The description is "Our delicious pulled pork topped with melted Swiss cheese & a cup of au jus for dipping". They have only one time remembered the Au Jus. The sandwich is just dry without it. almost inedible. I will not be returning. I will be suggesting a different place to go for lunch. read more

What a great experience! We were coming from a family event and we stopped for coffee on the go! The place is very clean even the bathrooms. Color scheme is Gray and White, what a great combination. The coffee was fresh and they gave us a big cup with a smile! Their menu is extensive with everything from two eggs for breakfast to chicken parm for dinner! We didn't stay long, for we have a lot to do, but m so glad we stopped just to familiarize ourselves with this wonderful diner that has been in the family for decades! read more

Been here a few times now every time I visit my parents we go here for a family breakfast , since my family goes here a lot feels like home .. our party is big they always takes care of us .. Melissa you are awesome thanks for making us feel welcome each time the right way to treat customers takes her time and not rushing . Came through the door on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 8:37p. I saw the hours posted on the door where it specified closing time at 9pm. The two older white female employees refused to serve us and repetitively stated, "We close at 9." Bewildered I muttered it wasn't 9p yet and was merely a few minutes past 8:30p. If they aren't willing to serve customers past 8:30p, why don't they post the closing time at 8:30p? Are those ladies lazy, racist or both? This place was awesome! My friends and I came on a Monday afternoon ~1pm. We ordered take out on the spot and it came out pretty fast for the amount we ordered (probably around 15-20 minutes) The waitresses and owner (?) were extremely friendly and patient with us (hard to order when you're in a big group). They were so easy to talk to and held good conversations. I couldn't be happier with the customer service experience. As for the food, I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich that came with French fries and a side of coleslaw or pickles (I got both). Dang!! Big portions for ~$10. I wish I took a photo but I devoured it immediately. It was good for the price! The pickles were really good hehe. Would come here again whenever I find myself in the area!!! read more

We ate lunch here on Thursday 8/17 . We had three in our party.their platters were fine but I ordered a mixed up cheesesteak. My cheesesteak came out very dry and hard to swallow. I only ate 1/2 and took the rest for the dog. We ordered pickles and coleslaw but had to remind the server to bring them out. A very poor meal experience. Beside waiting 25 minutes for the meal with only a few people in the place. We use to frequent this place a lot but the quality, service have really changed for the worse besides jacking up all the prices. We are finished with this restaurant. I wiped it off myself - Prime Rib is on the menu but the price is whites out. I ask if they still have it and am told Yes, but it's $29.99 now. I go to Lehman's in Essington frequently, they are known for their Prime Rib. Id they can serve an enormous piece (over 1/2lb) for $26, why does this diner have to charge even more than that, for a smaller piece (I've had it before, it is a smaller piece) - I order Fried Chicken. Shortly after I get my salad, the waitress tells me they don't have any fried chicken. - I change the order to Chicken Marsala. - The salad dressing was at watered down, it was runny liquid. - The Marsala sauce was very watery too - Strangely, the Marsala dish was absolutely smothered in Onions? There were more onions than anything else. That is not typically an ingredient in chicken Marsala. This review is for October 2014 although it's the same the dozens or so other times I have been here since discovering it in 2009. The Sungate is an oasis among the steel and tunnels and pipes that dot the landscape in Marcus Hook- an oil refinery town. First: It is very reasonably priced comfort food. Breakfast is great and so is lunch. Dinner is full service soup to nuts so to speak. Service: Always good. All servers are equally good. They seemed to be cut from the same cloth. The recognize you if you go back. At one point in late 2013 when I hadn't done my usual weekly stop in on the way home from work for 3 weeks running, when I came back everyone who wasn't wrapped up with a client came over to say "Hi". As this was my first time being here, as an establishment that serves food, the food was good but the customer service was not good. Upon arriving, I waited for 10 mins to eventually have someone ask if I wanted something to drink. After I received my water, it wasn't for another 30 mins later, that I had to call someone to order. Mind you, several people had come in after me and were seated and had their orders taken and made. Maybe I didn't look the part or it was assumed I wouldn't tip but their way, its not good to seat customers and not attend to them. When asked, the presumption was that I wasn't attended to because they were waiting on my guest to arrive. I've been to several restaurants and that has never been the case, so its odd to think that, versus simply asking me. I wouldn't recommend this place and I won't be coming back. read more

It really pays off to find places when traveling that are off the beaten track. My kids wanted brunch while in town for hockey and they got exactly what they hoped for. Huge servings of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Really classic diner good and really lovely staff. My Greek salad was tasty even though I'm not an onion fan. Huge serving, chicken was excellent. Sungate is the diner of choice for the plant folks and myself included. They are reliable and consistent. My favorite is the grilled chicken salad salad. It is fresh and the chicken isn't over seasoned, lots of flavor. I don't use salad dressing but for salad dressing lovers they have the basic salad dressings that you can bath your salad in to your desire. I also had their fries. Light but crispy on the outside and potatoey on the inside just like I like. As if that wasn't enough I also got the naked buffalo wings, hot sauce and blue cheese on the side. I love the blue cheese because it tastes like real blue cheeses and every so often you get a little gift (crumble of blue cheese). The wings are nice size. You get 12 wings and it is $8.95. With all of the calories from the wings and blue cheese I had water to wash it down. This diner was newly decorated within the last year it is a better atmosphere than in years past with nice size flat screen that you may watch should you choose to sit at the counter. As I was finishing up my lunch, my little eye spied this chocolate cake and then the glass refrigerated case with more yummy looking deserts. I wanted to order but I knew I wouldn't be good at work if I indulged in these beauties. If you are in the area and need good food this is good place to go. If you are looking for posh, this isn't it. If you want moderate pricing, good food, decent atmosphere, friendly service and reasonable fast service then this your place. read more

Maybe we just caught this diner at a bad time of the day but I wasn't overall thrilled with our experience.. but first let me start with the Pros before the Cons. Pros - Affordability Clean Dining Area and Bathroom Large menu full of options Kid friendly I am giving this experience three stars because of the atmosphere of our dining experience and the food. There were several issues with our order. I asked for well done home fries and they barely came crisp. We all got toast but it was more like bread with butter on it and the waitress only came by to refill our coffee once. In regards to the atmosphere it was fine in the beginning but towards the end of our meal a large group of people came in making a ruckus and clearly wanted our table. They were hovering over us like hawks while we wrapped up our meal and it was clear they wanted us to hurry up. Staff didn't really help mediate the dilemma and if anything made us feel more rushed and unwanted. It was just unfortunate because we chose this place (because of its good reviews) to visit a long time friend we haven't seen in awhile and it all cut to short. Check this place out if your hungry and nearby but if you have some more time to plan you probably can find somewhere better. read more

I used to go to the Sungate Diner periodically for breakfast. Their breakfast is normally pretty good. I was there today for breakfast and it was ok. Eggs and bacon were good, but the homefried potatoes were awful. They used to have real home fried potatoes but today it seemed as if they were using pre-cut frozen potatoes. When my meal came out, the home fried potatoes were perfect little white squares that weren't even browned. It looked like they were just defrosted and heated. I was asked if I wanted friend onions and I said "yes." Well, the onions were not cooked with the potatoes, they seemed to have been fried alone and dumped on top of the potatoes. NOT GOOD!!! I ate everything else but didn't eat the potatoes. Unfortunately, that experience left a bad taste in my mouth about their breakfast. Probably won't go back there anymore for breakfast. Bummer!!!!! Disappointing given the great reviews from other patrons. I ordered the "Eggs, potatoes and hash" special. It was special in a bad sort for way. The hash tasted like it was dumped out of a #10 can and heated up. No flavor and felt disgusting in the mouth. The coffee was weak, the hash browns were those tasteless potatoes that are boiled before grated - or they tasted that way. The toast was warm and damp as if it had been setting in a steamer to be kept warm after it was toasted hours ago. I ate the eggs, potatoes and one half slice of bread but could not stomach the hash. Maybe the quality was the price of all of this which was less than $7 and it wa a huge pile of food! What could you expect for that price? If I could have eaten all of that I'd sure not be hungry for a long time! I'd rather pay more, get less and have some quality. This was what I imagine prison food must be like. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant! No nonsense women in their 50's moving fast to take orders and deliver the goods with a "Here you go Hon!" announcement. The place is clean and neat with booths like from the olden days. A long and fine granite counter top that is spotless with stools for us guys who want it served fast. I've enjoyed this place numerous times. The place is notable for being spotlessly clean. The food is fine for the price; for example I had scallops once and they were fine and were less the 20 bucks. They have daily specials and I believe most things are made in house. The Old Causeway it ain't, but a fine reasonably priced place where you get well prepared food at a price that makes it a good value with nice service makes it one of the best diners around. read more

I was looking for a place to get a meal and pass the time before I had to drop a friend at the airport and we found Sungate Diner on Yelp. We were very pleased with how reasonably priced and generous the portions were. We started with a cup of New England Clam Chowder and then I had eggs with toast and potatoes and my friend had the same plus her first experience with Scrapple! She didn't like it at first, but by the end of our leisurely meal, she said it grew on her. It's an old time diner with booths and chrome and that was very pleasant. The service was also excellent.
