Houndstooth has lightened up its act. This was probably a commercially wise gesture, But the old Houndstooth is still there if you dig around a bit. * * * When Houndstooth was first founded, It wanted to be the sommelier of sommeliers of high-form espresso. Sitting on your computer working was discouraged. Lattes and mixed coffee beverages were available, But if you bought one, The barista acted as if she had just sold her soul to Starbucks. There were vast amounts of information about each coffee bean. The counter staff was prepared to talk about coffee subtleties with you with all of the enthusiasm and loquaciousness of a cheese sommelier at Antonelli's. * * * All that is gone now. Houndstooth is filled to the gills with people working on their computers. The modal drink is lattes. The place was full, but I was the only guy drinking an espresso. Questions asked about coffee received terse and not altogether enlightening answers. * * * That said, someone in management is trying to keep the artisanal espresso tradition alive. The espresso I ordered (their Vixen blend) was an unusual and complex coffee. I like my espresso bitter - which sets me apart from most high coffee fashionistas. But I could appreciate that the coffee I was drinking was complicated with a foretaste and aftertaste that were different from each other. One element was floral and one element was something else I could not give a name to. Their old espresso drinking classes would have been useful here for giving me a working conceptual scheme. * * * That said, making lattes and letting people work on their computers is a very high margin business. Changing their business model is probably the number one reason why a) Houndstooth is still alive today and b) Houndstooth is adding location after location. There were lots and lots of happy latte drinkers in the house. One of them was not my wife. She hated her croissant and was indifferent to her soy latte. But if there had been an election on rating the lattes in the cafe, she would have probably lost. * * * I think this is an interesting espresso house - especially for North Central Austin where many of the famous coffee houses serve utterly indifferent espresso. I have not found my mad true love espresso at Houndstooth yet. I may never find it. Some "gourmet" coffee houses aspire to an espresso that is very light - a drink that is almost like water. This to me is a pointless exercise, and I will not rule out some sensibilities of that nature at Houndstooth. I have found great espresso in various coffee houses on Austin's new Eastside. Plus, if you are ever lucky enough to get to London, Go to the neighborhood called Crouch End. They have about twenty coffee shops in a six block range. Three quarters of them make espresso that is to die for. However, I suspect my one true espresso is hiding somewhere at Houndstooth. The question is, how to find it, while avoiding useless ultralight espresso. read more

Searching for the neighborhood Macbook nation? Look no further, they are all parked in here. During peak hours, the tables and seats fill up quickly and it can be tough to find a spot to settle. Despite the annoying crowds, Houndstooth offers a quality cappuccino and it has been my weekend go-to in Austin. Overall, the place is clean and pleasant, and the baristas are quite friendly. I think it is too small to be a regular study spot, but it is great from grabbing coffee with friends or as a pick-me-up of the day. read more

Houndstooth has a great atmosphere with a lot of seating and super friendly staff! I liked how the music wasn't too loud and tables were pretty spacious so it made it a great place to do work. I got the sweet latte which was very smooth and not overly sweet. It also came in a super cute mug! I also ordered the zucchini bread after they ran out of banana bread. The barista recommended it as she said it's not as sweet and I'm glad she told me about it! It's nice and moist and has a slight cinnamon flavor. How have I never been here before!?! Mad props to Scotty G for the introduction! I was in caffeinated, coffee heaven! There were so many amazing choices and I can only imagine each one is done well! I had Japanese cold brew, which half the fun is watching it be made. My friend had the the carbonated tea, which tasted just like it smelled, dreamy! He also go their signature lil coffee cocktail the "Jo and Jam" that was so darn adorable, I didn't want him to drink it! Watching the baristas flutter about behind the bar was like watching dancing butterflies and each and every one of them were so nice, approachable and *gasp* talkative! It was pretty crowded on Sunday afternoon, so we stood at the bar and enjoyed the show. The crowd here was an eclectic mix of everybody and seemed to be a hodgepodge of regulars and newbs. I am not going to lie...pretty much everyone in the place was easy on the eyes. I would given them a solid 5 stars today. Been a regular for a few years. Always serve me up great Espresso drinks. One BIG issue today. It's a show stopper y'all. While trying to compliment a barista who made my oat cappuccino just perfect. She tells me from a distance, in a crowd, "Don't talked to me, I don't like you." I thought she was joking at me. Okay so - As I say with all of the coffee places I go to, I really wanted to like this place with all of the rave reviews on Yelp. We ordered one black drip, and one Mocha. The Drinks: Both of the coffees were really great. The beans of the actual coffee were really nicely picked - beautiful roasted flavor with a little bit of smoke. It was on the pricey side for coffee, but its a definite treat. The baristas definitely take this as their art. The Service: The service was a little weird. When we walked in there was a bunch of people at tables with laptops. It was pretty quiet. There were 4 baristas behind the counter. We weren't really sure where to go to place our orders because there was no one at the register. When we walked to the register, we needed a minute to figure out what to order. Then when we were ready, we were looking for someone to talk to and then the girl behind the actual machines took our order. I hate to be a "Karen" and give any smaller coffee business less than a 5 star review. However, as someone who frequents coffee shops, I found $7.50 for a small latte too expensive. Granted I got an alternative milk. $8-$10 is the new normal for drinks at a coffee shop? Also, the order I placed "for here" was in to go cups. Lastly, their menu on the door DID NOT HAVE PRICES LISTED ?! So I was a bit surprised to hear the total of the drinks I ordered. The taste of the latte was average. The coffee: The cortado was very mild. It didn't have any particularly strong flavors. It was light bodied, and kind of fruity. There was some chocolatey notes. Overall it was just very mild, but not necessarily milky. $4.60 for a cortado is really steep. It's definitely the most expensive cortado I have gotten. Considering the small size of the drink, I would say it's a. It unreasonable, especially factoring in the overall just mild taste. The service: The baristas are very friendly, making casual conversation with you and telling you about the different beans they use and that you can choose from. The shop: It was very spacious, with different types of seating. You can find places to eat, talk, or work with table, bar, and couch seating. I liked the modern look and feel of the place. I am one of those people that NEED a great cup of coffee to start my day. Infact I find that the better the coffee the better the day. I try making it at home but some how it always seems to tast better at the coffee house. I'm always in search of the perfect cup. The industrial decor alerts the consumer that Houndstooth takes their business seriously. The menu is small, which isn't a bad thing if the product is exceptional. This place never fails to impress me. My cappacino was topped off with an adorable heart in the foam. The only issue I have is that the serving size of these cups of perfection are tiny. I honestly would need to order 3 to fulfill my desire for caffeine. (Don't judge me) They also offer a small array of baked goods, they are tastey and seem to pair well with the coffee. Various locations throughout Austin, and if it's a 100 Degrees in the afternoon you can get a cold beer. I'm a black coffee, no sugar, no milk guy. Houndstooth has always been fantastic! The baristas are so friendly and cheerful, it really adds a lot to their business. They really go the extra mile to ensure that you feel welcome. Coffee is great as always, I usually go for the latte with oatmilk, and it never disappoints. It can be a little pricey when you add milk alternatives on top of a bigger sized cup. They don't offer any seating inside at the moment with COVID, but there is some seating outside. I'm a former barista so this hurt extra because I know how a latte should be prepared. The cashier was nice but my $7.50 for a small oat milk latte couldn't have been more disappointing (no prices listed anywhere, thanks for the surprisingly expensive price). We asked for our coffees for here, they served us in a to-go cup. The oat milk was too hot, and I understand it's harder to create micro foam with alternative milks, but it was just bad bubbly foam (the photo included was taken less than a minute after it was prepared). The espresso itself didn't impress me at all, I picked up more of a burnt taste than any flavor notes. There also isn't really anywhere to sit inside, this is one of those coffee shops where people park their asses at a table with their laptops for far too long because they are bored of working at home. I definitely wouldn't recommend this spot to anyone. So far the best place for coffee in the area is about half a mile away, Civil Goat Coffee. read more

The choices are listed on a board by the espresso machine and the staff can help you choose. The vibe is inviting and there's a lot of space here to work or study. I just happened to go to this taco deli for breakfast burritos and needed coffee afterwards. I thought how convenient! Let me tell you, the coffee was top quality. The consistency of my vanilla latte was so smooth I was very pleasantly surprised on the first sip. Came to get a coffee here with my Grandma to try it out. We purchased a blueberry muffin and two chocolate lattes. This place has pretty natural light and is designed nicely! There is outdoor and indoor seating options. The baristas are sweet, helpful, and knowledgeable. There are a few downsides to this place. There is a big problem regarding the outlets - there are only a few for the entire coffee house and they are located awkwardly so it is extremely inconvenient for anyone trying to get work done if the few seating options close to outlets are taken. My chocolate latte was good and the muffin was good as well but neither were impressive to me personally. The latte had some sort of chocolate syrup at the bottom which also bothered me especially for spending 6.50 on it.
