The cashier was (to put it easiest) annoying. He wanted to know everything about my day and where I worked and how I got to be where I was today and where I was going. For an interaction that I should have never remembered, I now will always remember this man. When the three of us settled in that back couch and began conversing like normal human beings, we started getting odd looks from the interesting people sequestered behind their laptops. Our barista was delightfully cheerful and engaging, and I regret not getting her name. I didn't think the prices here were that unreasonable for what they were offering. I love Houndstooth. They're one of my fav coffeeshops in Austin. Hoping they make their way to Round Rock one day. We totally have an open market up here for it, and nobody to fulfill those needs. The macchiatos are always on point. Presentation and environment are also on par. The baristas are always pleasant. Keep up the good work, y'all. Update from 5/6/17: Went back today, and again, this place never fails me! It's always so clean and inviting. The baristas at the front are so dang nice! Also, they had some special espresso bean today, and I wish I could remember the name of it, but it was light and delicious! It was an Ethiopian bean that I'd definitely do again any day. I tried the cortado this go around, and it was an excellent change up from my regular order. I'm still a macchiato girl, but yum! My friend and I truly enjoyed our afternoon tea and scone. It was crowded during our visit and we opted to sit outdoors since the indoor seating was full. The decor mix of modern and rustic had an open feel for the small interior space. The vibe of this cafe will make you want to stay a while and leisurely enjoy your coffee or tea. They serve hot tea in a side teapot with a mug that is graced with an graphic of the State of Texas at the bottom. Houndstooth is one of my favorite places to study; the environment is great and the place is clean and comfortable. I've only been to the Lamar location, but I really like it! As for the beverages, they definitely take their craft seriously at Houndstooth and have several 'daily brews' to choose from. I think Houndstooth has some of the most talented baristas in Austin. Not a place to go if you're looking for something similar to Starbucks' sugary, fake coffee beverage; this is the real deal. I haven't quite decided if the great bitter taste that I love about Houndstooth is worth the hefty price associated with their drinks. I do really love their coffee, and would prefer it over a lot of other places in Austin, but the price deters me from visiting often. Also, if you don't prefer the rich coffee taste, I wouldn't come here. I took my sister here who is less favorable with the bitter taste and she had to add quite a bit of sugar to her drink in order to tolerate it. Houndstooth was recommended to me as having a reputation as the most serious coffee place in Austin. The product has grown since then from excellent to stellar. Great little coffee shop on Lamar. I've had a couple of meetings here, and the espresso is always great. I normally get a cortado, and I never know which espresso to pick, so I generally just let them do it for me. They'll make just about any coffee drink you can think up, and they'll do it quickly. Well-lit, plenty of seating, fast wi-fi. It seems like everyone here knows each other, or maybe everyone is just really frigging friendly, but it definitely feels like the neighborhood place where everyone knows your name. read more

I've been to Houndstooth a couple of times now and think the coffee shop is a great addition to Austin, and especially to the neighborhood near Rosedale. I agree with the other reviewers who say that the coffee here is superb. I am not a connouissuer, but hands-down they have the best coffee in town. The decor is minimalist, but to me still has a warmth to it. The beauty of the place is in the construction of the coffee bar. Perhaps that was intentional, as the coffee (good coffee) is definitely the focus here. They also have a great little wine list (beer, too), which should be good for folks wanting to come in during evening, as I did when I met a friend last week. We sat outside and enjoyed our time there. I also agree with others who note that there are kinks to work out given the newness of the place (open a mere few weeks). I'm going to attempt to write a review about this place sin bias. Allow me to start off by saying that the way I experienced this place for the first time should not be followed if anyone wants to try it for the first time. After my morning workout, I packed up my things and headed out to study. I had a big craving for coffee last night so I researched about 5 or 6 places around town that I'd really love to try. Houndstooth was first on my list of places to hit up. Mistake #1 made by me is that after working out, I was still trying to cool off. Despite still being hot, I went to Houndstooth and got a hot espresso based drink. I did this because of the time crunch that I'm in, but I would recommend that if anyone wants to order a [hot] espresso based drink, they shouldn't themselves, be hot when placing their order! Why? It just takes all the fun out of enjoying a nice warm beverage. ..No other reason. Turns out that I pass this place pretty frequently on Lamar on the way to the Triangle, where my good friend lives. I never looked on the left hand side, where it is - since I'm always traveling North Bound on Lamar. Make sure you enter to the left of the shop since the parking is only designed to come in one way. Upon entering the shop, I was kindly greeted by a barista at the counter. He asked me what he could do for him. I told him that this was my first time at Houndstooth and I wanted to try a drink of theirs that they are proud to serve. He proceeded to ask me if I wanted coffee or espresso based, hot or cold. ..Now all common sense would say that I'd want an iced coffee because I was still trying to cool down, BUT...I was on my way to study and where I study is a bit cool in temperature. I thought that if I ordered a hot drink, I'd take it to go and then be set for studying for a good few hours. I answered him in return telling him that I wanted a hot espresso based drink. I didn't know what a cortada was, although now I do know, after reading up about it on the internet), so I ordered a machiatto. Now... Houndstooth is not in the wrong. What or who is in the wrong - I will let you figure that one out yourself. A little background: the only place(s) that I've previously had a Machiatto was at Starbucks, more specifically, their Caramel Machiatto. Now, I like Starbucks...so don't get me wrong but now my view about Starbucks has slightly been shifted. I think that company caters to their western "ignorant" audience. The company thrives on the "feel goodness" that it sells. Meaning, they redesign and completely ruin the real machiatto just so that it can appease the naive customers. While this was all racing through my head, I was watching the other Barista, while I stood to the side. The way she went about in filling the puck, tampering, pulling the epresso, steaming the milk..wow. It was all so orchestrated and melodious. I fell in a trance. So much so, that she poured it all into a nice little coffee cup with a matching saucer. I got caught off guard - ignorant me, molded by Starbucks' cunning drink schemes - and she served it to me in a cup and saucer. I apologized for not pre-specification that I wanted it to go. She then transferred it to a small to go cup and I was on my way. I like my drinks a bit sweet, so I added two packets of raw granulated sugar. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have done this just so I could experience the real taste of a true machiatto, prepared by a knowledgeable Batista. It was smaller than a tall you would get at Starbucks. It's how a small should be. But the Machiatto itself, was about half of the cup. A double shot of espresso with steamed milk. She even made a nice little design for me when she poured it into the cup (before transferring it to a to-go cup. ) Well done, Houndstooth...well done. Now I will try some other coffee shops later on this week so that I may decide for myself which one I like best. Starbucks is so over rated. I'm giving it 4 stars because on yelp.com when I select a rating, 4 stars indicates: Yay! The coffee is hands down the best ever! I was actually thinking about how much I had wished that that was what I was drinking as I was drinking my non-Houndstooth coffee this morning. Really, just this morning I was thinking that. I have gotten an Americano and the french press, and they are both just fantastic. I get my coffee and then eat my tacos next door at Tacodeli, and that makes for one fantastic weekend day, let me tell you (although I wish it were Torchy's, but I can't have it all, I realize - not for lack of trying). The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired though. The concrete everywhere keeps it from having a warm atmosphere, but the staff makes up for it for the most part. I always get good service, and have not had any issues with the patrons (like Errol M). They have a couple tables outside, but on a nice day, the chances of snagging one of those tables is very unlikely. I like that they have some wine options too - might be nice to get some wine and a taco one time to mix it up a little. read more

But, Houndstooth is hands down my favorite coffee shop in Austin. It's the only place I get cappucino and know to expect only goodness. They're always consistent, and the baristas friendly. The only con of this place is that outlets are pretty sparse and the seatings tend to be full most of the time I've gone. Before I begin my review, I just want to say that I am by no means a coffee connoisseur! Hand picked Colombian coffee house roasted and freshly ground vs instant coffee tastes basically the same to me. As a result I basically like my coffee 10% coffee, 40% milk, and 50% sugar. Therefore, I normally just drown any coffee given to me in copious amounts of sugar, honey, and sweetener (yay diabeetus). BUT my experience at houndstooth was mucho different-o. I ordered a vanilla latte with Rustico espresso (i have no idea what that is but the friendly barista recommended it). Just as I was about to nuke it with sugar, I decided to give it a sip first. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM much taste, such good! Didn't even need sugar. I believe that's truly a testament to the quality of Houndstooth coffee. So far its the best quality coffee I have tried in Austin! Other notes: This place is very cozy, but its a downright terrible place if you want to get work done. It's quite loud, has like zero outlets, and very few actual tables. My husband and I paid a visit to Houndstooth after reading several positive reviews online, reporting this coffee shop as one of the best in Austin. After trying it for ourselves, I have to admit they do serve excellent coffee; my tasty iced latte was very well made. My husband's chai latte was delicious and among the best we've had in the city. That being said, I found myself a bit shocked when I looked at the bill; the coffee cup size was smaller than what I usually get at other third wave coffee shops, yet the cost was at least a dollar more expensive. Yes, the coffee is good, but is it THAT good? My wallet isn't so sure! Another point that left me disappointed was the pastries; not only was the selection very limited, but upon asking if the barista could reheat my croissant, he reply they couldn't as they do not have a microwave and that they probably never will have one as they fear customers would ask them to use it to reheat their coffee. Hum, what? No, I don't want you to put my croissant (or cold coffee for that matter) in the microwave. That's disgusting. I would think however it would be a really smart idea to invest in a mini oven used to bake fresh parties or simply reheat them for 30 seconds. My croissant was cold and a bit lifeless. This problem could so easily be fixed! The way I see it, if you're going to do pastries, do it right or not at all, especially with the high prices you are asking your customers to pay! They don't carry my little yellow splenda packets, so mixing in sugar in the raw I believe it's called in an iced latte, never gets the job down. However, with that being said, Houndstooth rocks. First, I'm going to say the 5 stars are for the quality, flavor, atmosphere and overall experience. To read the one hang-up please scroll to the end. We both got mochas. The wait time was good, the baristas are visible and engaging, and you can really tell this is their craft. They love making coffee, and it shows. The aroma when you walk in is delicious and our drinks raised our eyebrows. Even though it was busy we had no problem finding a seat. We were in there about 90 minutes and the line was never shorter than 5 people. I do think they should have a visible menu though. My one dismay was the cost. We got a 12oz mocha and a 16oz mocha and it was TWELVE DOLLARS. Twelve dollars!!!!!!! By far the most expensive coffee we've ever had, but they had hundreds of customers lined up so it doesn't seem to deter people. Houndstooth espresso makes my taste buds smile. I usually rotate between the cortado, latte, and cappuccino- all of which are excellent. The staff has a great attitude and is really talented with latte art that never fails to put a smile on my face. Houndstooth has limited space for studying, but is perfect for a quick drink or for togo. My go-to drink is an iced caramel latte. When a place doesn't have caramel, I opt for vanilla and cinnamon. But houndstooth had vanilla and honey so that's what I ordered. Because I love honey and I'm trying to stop myself from adding syrup or sugar to my coffee after receiving it. Sweet enough to satisfy me while still letting the coffee flavor (the bitterness) to seep through. Not enough outlets so that's why I'm docking a star. If I could, I'd actually give this place 3.5 stars because of lack of seating as well. Coffee is a solid 4-5 stars. For some reason, all the outlets are in the back corner of the place, which doesn't make sense considering there's a huge AF table for community seating at the front, but with no outlets around it. read more

The baristas are very friendly and helpful -- so if you have any doubts about what to order or if you want to try something new, just ask them about it and they'll be happy to help you out. I love Houndstooth Coffee. The baristas have been consistently pleasant from my morning experiences, the rotating coffee specials are always great picks and yummy flavors, and they have a great house coffee. They DO offer cappuccinos, but this isn't really the place for those. Their prices are a little bit higher than some of the other places in town but I think the tastes are by far better. Rotating coffee specials are on the left when approaching the register and their major notes are listed to make choosing easier. Same with espressos, which are served with a small glass of (I think) Topo Chico for cleansing the palette, according to my friend Helen. It's definitely different from other "coffeeshops" in that I'm not sure I feel too comfortable studying here for extended periods of time--the word I would describe it with isn't exactly "cozy." Warm even? No. Enjoyable and modern, but in the tiniest bit I'd compare it to Medici in terms of feel tables and chairs-wise. I emailed Houndstooth privately but they never responded. I visited the North Lamar shop last week and had such a terrible experience. As a former Austinite visiting town for a while, I was looking forward to going back to one of my favorite coffee shops. However, the employee who greeted me was so incredibly rude that I would never return to Houndstooth again. I walked in and she (younger woman, brown hair) asked me if I knew what I wanted. I was looking at the pastries and said not yet. I then asked her where the pastries were from. She laughed at the question as if it was the stupidest thing a customer could ask. All I wanted to know was from what bakery and her answer was so condescending. I ended up just ordering a drip coffee and she was not polite about my order. I noticed that she treated the customers after me so much better. The bottomline is that I didn't deserve to be treated that way and was very upset by the ordeal. read more

A fan for sure. I love this little coffee shop. My experience with Houndstooth was in the evening. The owner/manager was so sweet and talked about all the different coffees they offered, explaining the brewing process with great detail. This tells me they are passionate about a good cup of coffee and that speaks to this coffee lover. I went to Houndstooth for an after-dinner coffee experience and it was the perfect setting. If we wanted a fast-food type coffee run with yelling baristas, paper cups and our names spelled wrong, we would've gone to Starbucks, but we weren't looking for that type of atmosphere. We wanted to take our time, talk, drink from a real ceramic cup, and enjoy our adult time away from the kids. The music was great, the vibe was calm, mature, and peaceful. Maybe just because it's small and open and everyone's in such close proximity. Of the neighborhood coffee places I'd go to Houndstooth for the espresso drinks, Flightpath for the chill vibe and snack options (the coffee itself is not great), and Epoch for the lively neighborhood mix (they've got some games and local art offerings on the walls) and food options. For super special coffee, I head to the other side of 35 to Corona Coffee. Truly my favorite place for excellent coffee out of all the coffee shops I frequent in Austin. I typically add sugar free flavoring and/or heavy cream to my coffee but they didn't have either here so I added a splash of half and half. I order today's brew, Amor de Dios or the Love of God. It has a dark roast look to it but tastes smooth as a light roast. One sip and I felt like I got un abrazo de Dios this morning. It's a great brew made even better with a pour-over. I'm definitely going to buy this brew to take home. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about coffees and brew methods. It's right next to Uchiko and Taco Deli. Parking is not an issue as there are plenty of spots available. Houndstooth did an excellent job with their interior design - it's aesthetically pleasing. However, there's not a lot of seats available, and it's always so damn busy. I've come here several times now, but many times, I had to leave right away because I couldn't find a place to sit. Coffee is just mediocre. If you're lucky enough to find seats, then this is the perfect place to catch up with your friend. If you can't find seats, just go to Starbucks that's across the street. read more
