    Pasta salad

Huge portions and they treat you like family here! Welcoming and warm environment where you can truly just sit and enjoy a tasty sandwich. Ingredients feel fresh and well-selected, all coming together for one delicious bite after another. Their potato salad is one for the books. I was pleasantly surprised to see they now have a full bar and will be back to try their drinks soon. Their pizzas are also flavorful and big! A gem to revisit often in Union Square!

Hot Tomatoes is honestly such a hidden gem. The pizza is incredible -- super tasty and the portions are really big. What made it even better was the friendly service, everyone was so welcoming and kind. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to.

Thing that crushed my girlfriend when she sat down, this fell over on her.
    Tom T.

We sat down outside and the wind blew this over on my girlfriend and crushed her. We wait 20 minutes for food (a salad, a sandwich and a slice of pizza) and finally go up to the counter and one of our orders has been sitting there for the 20 minutes. We find out they gave the sandwich to someone else and they didn't start making a new one until we pointed it out. The sandwich was supposed to come with a side which we didn't get. When we finally got the sandwich, the chef had to walk the food over because the front cashier guy was too incompetent. Pizza was cold. I think if they fired the cashier person, the place would be a lot better.

    Sloppy Joe: amazing gourmet version!

The Sloppy Joe was amazing! I hadn't had a Sloppy Joe since the elementary school cafeteria. I have been thinking of them in recent years and wondering what my first one as an adult would be like. First, Hot Tomatoes' is huge! I had been thinking $15 (after tax and tip) was a bit steep for a sandwich, but this was 2 full sandwiches. The bread is artisanal, delightfully thick and chewy, and way surpassed my expectations; a major step up from a hamburger bun. The filling tastes just like my nostalgic memories, but upon further inspection is much more gourmet, with the addition of beautifully melted cheese, caramelized onions and occasional bits of shredded carrots and tomatoes. It was definitely "sloppy" but so delicious I didn't mind picking up all the pieces that fell out and stuffing them back in. Tip: if you take some home make sure to wrap the part with the meaty inside exposed in several napkins as well as the small sheet they give you. I did and the bag still got leaky and stained orange. The leftover "half" sandwich tasted really good cold too. I will definitely go back for the Sloppy Joe and maybe other things - the menus of sandwiches, salads, and pizza all look very appealing, more than the typical sandwich shop.

Loved the sandwiches, but the pizza was a disappointment. No rise on the dough & it couldn't stand up to the sauce. Sauce had good flavor. Just the dough was terrible. Could prob make a better pizza at home.

Hot Tomato Pie with cherry peppers and pepperoni
    Nitasha K.

Finally got to come in and order Hot Tomatoes! The ambiance was a comfortable, modern vibe for take out or dine in. The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable. My husband and I ordered to go, the Hot Tomatoes Pie with hot cherry peppers and pepperoni along with the chick a dee salad. The pizza was perfectly crisp and thin, with solid flavors and balance. The pizza size is a decent size and has 8 slices. Coming from NJ and NY it's difficult to find a pizza of that caliber locally and we're so happy we finally have a spot for that well made pie. The salad was also flavorful and paired well with the pizza. We'll definitely be back! (Check out the photos!)

We ordered online from their actual website, and the online menu was very clearly labeled and was SO thorough in explanations and checkmark boxes for variations and letting the place know about allergies and such. That is rare to find, and people with allergies always have to worry about that kind of thing, it's a whole to-do. IYKYK. If you have celiac, it may not be a great option as they have cross contamination for their pizzas. Anyways, now the grand reveal: I got a gluten free and dairy free pizza with various toppings and it was GREAT!! It's rare to find a pizza place that can fill the place of regular pizza when you have gluten & dairy allergies, but this comes close! I'm very happy with what I ordered. It is pricey, and their extras are pricey to add on. However, I don't really care as it is rare to be able to enjoy pizza for me. They also provide little gf/df marshmallow treats as a little dessert, for free. That was a nice surprise. Companies don't do stuff like this, so it goes a long way in my book! Overall, great allergy friendly pizza place, and also for regular folks who want a regular pizza. Everyone will be happy.

It was the manager Ryan's recommendation & prepared with special care, & attention as I'm lactose intolerant. My famous "Mushroom Bomb" sandwich with a delicious salad, 'house Focaccia, without 'Queso.' OMG! It was so delicious & I was surprised to have eaten everything within a few minutes as I'm a slow eater & do take me time to eat my meal. There is also brunch meal made with these special mushroom & very delicious too. Try it when you at Gufo during brunch. Thanks to the Gufo kitchen crew, the waiters & bar staff. They are always personable, pleasant & customer-friendly. To the manager, Ryan, keep up the amazing & awesome job you're doing. You're truly the best. The chocolate chip cookies are to die for. Also thank you for the pizza & cookies last time. To my son Tepe N. Esq., you're an amazing, thoughtful, kind & incredibly awesome son. All this for $30! If you and your friends are in more of a nibbling mood, this is a fine option. Other great things we ordered: 1. Half chicken Milanese - I loved the layer of greens and creme on top, makes for a beautiful presentation. That said, this dish is best eaten right there at the table when it's hot and crispy. I had some for leftovers the day after and the texture definitely wilted. 2. Duck bacon pizza - can't go wrong with duck bacon but it's pretty rich and indulgent and, while I love pizza, one slice of this was enough. Next time, I'd try the pepperoni and vodka pie, which our waitress was super enthusiastic about. 3. Swiss chard Caesar salad - love that they add fish roe on top for an unexpected burst of flavor and saltiness. 4. Rigatoni - sauce had a lot of depth to it but very, very salty. 5. Cacio e pepe arancini - we ate this so quickly that I didn't have time to snap a photo. Dessert was soft serve, they're very generous with the portion. The layout of the restaurant is a little funny - when you come in, the host stand is in an empty space with the pizza oven right behind it, and then you walk a little further back into the actual bar/restaurant area. It's a pretty casual sit-down place, with both families and office dinners happening. Lots of street parking outside.

The beet salad was fresh and yummy. Seating was comfortable, lighting was bright and cheery, our large group was accomodated well. But the thing is this: It's a full two months later and I'm still thinking about that cauliflower soup! There is cooking, there is good cooking, and then there's food artistry. That soup was a work of art! I would go back just for that. Five stars for paying attention to the details, for the artistry of putting together just the right balance of flavor, texture, and visual presentation. This is way more than "a good pizza place."

The dining room is fairly small with some bar seating available as well. It was clean and bright. It took about 7 mins for the server to come over and she lead with "are you ready to order?" I guess simple pleasantries are useless anyway. We knew our drinks and appetizers order but not what we wanted for pizza yet so we ordered those and told her we'd order pizzas when the apps and drinks came. She came back about 3 minutes later and asked if we were ready to order yet. Feeling pressured, we ordered thinking that perhaps they close soon (not the case). The bartender delivered our drinks a few minutes later and about 5 mins after that both the appetizers and pizza arrived at the same time. Besides the fact that our table wasn't large enough to accommodate all that food and drink, it was never our intention to eat our appetizers with our meal. The good news is that the food was hot, fresh and tasty. The potato bombs were excellent. Crispy home fry like potatoes and the peppers had a nice heat. I would love to try the popper version next time. The pizzas were good too, but be prepared for floppy and slightly under done base crust but a perfectly charred edge crust. I find many wood fired pizza to come this way but I did see other reviews mention this as a negative. The bill comes in a small ball jar with a delicious rice crispy treat. While the jar worked it must have made it hard to see that I dropped my credit card in it, so after the waitress walked by a few times I removed the card and made it visible on the table. When the tab came to sign I was not given a pen. I should have walked out and just let them charge me for just the tab but I cannot stiff waitstaff, even when it's poor service. My only hope is that it was the waitress's first day and she somehow figures out the typical cadence and procedure involved in waiting tables. Food was a solid 4 but service was a 2 so I landed on a 3. I would definitely go back hoping for a better server.
