My review is solely based off the food. I think it's fairly average. We've been here a couple times now. Both times there wasn't a wow factor for any of the food ordered. I do have a bunch of allergies so I can only really order the side meat dishes like bacon, sausage, and chorizo.. and the potatoes. That's pretty common most places I go. My boyfriend has gotten the chilaquiles and the breakfast burrito. The chilaquiles are like warm nachos with black beans... disappointing. And the breakfast burrito was huge and definitely better than the chilaquiles. But the sauce tasted like the canned ravioli sauce. And we were told it was spicy which it wasn't. Other than the food though this place is super cool. Lots of vintage trinkets and fun furniture. The first time we came it was crazy busy but while you waiting you could play with the old school handheld games. The service is great and the cool factor is there. Just the food could use a little improvement. Also it would be awesome to have gluten free toast or pancake option :) read more

I wasn't impressed. I was in town for business and I researched pancake spots. Read the reviews and thought this place would have fluffy phenomenal pancakes...Bisquick or just add water pancake mix was better than what I was served. The pancakes were very chewy and did not have the "melt in your mouth" fluffy texture like buttermilk pancakes. The breakfast poutine was okay but nothing to write home about. Y'all! Yes, I said y'all. I am from Mississippi and take breakfast very seriously! We were staying a few miles away at great wolf lodge and came across the HOT PLATE menu when doing a search for breakfast. The menu looked amazing. We uber-ed on over to give it a try. There were 5 of us, and we all ordered something different. We all said it was some of the BEST breakfast we ever had. I have been dreaming about that biscuit for days. The pancakes were delicious. Even after I was full, I tasted my daughters and finished them!!! The chicken fried steak and huevos rancheros were on point! I wish I had taken pics of the food but sadly I did not. Hot Plate is a Hot Place for breakfast! Came on a Sunday morning around 9:30 and was immediately seated, though the place was packed. If you come after 10am or in a group of 3 or more, expect to wait a bit (on the plus side, there's free coffee while you wait)! The place is eclectically decorated with quirky decor, making it fun and intimate. The servers were all kind and helpful, making sure our coffees were always full. We enjoyed the Grand Marais scramble (featured y rout, cream cheese, and eggs....honestly a little bland but still satisfying), the Mexican omelette (amazing chipotle sauce), and ended with candied pecan pancake (yum!) to satisfy our sweet tooth. I was on the hunt to find a diner for some greasy breakfast food to nurse a hangover, and Hot Plate definitely checked that box. We went on a Saturday at 11:30 and I was prepared for a long wait as they do not take reservations, but was pleasantly surprised when we were seated immediately. You definitely should check this place out for the décor alone, reminds me of a well-curated garage sale meets grandma's house. The pancake was the favorite thing we ordered, really good and fluffy. The pecans are a topping on a normal pancake, not integrated into the pancake, so maybe skip the nuts and just go with a classic pancake. The biscuits and gravy was a solid 8/10 and the potatoes it came with were wonderful. I was less a fan of the breakfast burrito, I'd give it maybe a 6/10, it was still good, just not as good as the other items we ordered. Adding this place to my list of good diners! read more

This place is a hidden gem! it's tucked into the middle of a neighbourhood, but by the time we got there they were already lining up!! we waited about 30 mins for our table, but the wait was totally worth it! Our server was super friendly, he recommended us to try the mexican omlette and their fried chicken breakfast. So that's what we ordered :) they're also super well known for their gigantic and fluffy pancakes, so when we asked him which flavour to try, he told us he would order something off the menu for us - it was a PB & nutella pancake! The portions are so big! I"m not used to eating so much food and rich food especially lol. the mexican omlette was great - for those who like that kick that you get from the mexican dishes would like this omlette for sure :) the toast you can tell they make in house - it's super fresh and soft!! the fried chicken, omg was probably one of the best ones I"ve had in a while. the creamy gravy/sauce that went with it perfectly paired the crispy chicken underneath. it was so good but i got SO FULL eating 1/3 into it lol. The pancake is no joke - 10" wide in diameter. it's like a pizza almost lol (a small one). i didn't use the butter that came with it, and had to scrape off a bit of the sauce coz it was getting a little too intense in sweetness, but man that pancake was so good. I had a really fun time at Hot Plate. Tucked away in a neighborhood, it's not a big place. I think I counted something like a dozen tables. But it is worth the wait for a really solid breakfast joint. The one, most important thing to know about Hot Plate is that there is no lack of stuff to look at. You can easily entertain yourself looking at the artwork hanging on the walls and the funny little statues that seem to be just about everywhere on every available surface. The staff was friendly and there is frequently replenished free coffee while you stand around and wait, along with trays of retro coffee mugs. Food-wise, very very solid breakfast. I had a make your own omelette with cheese, bacon, tomatoes and something else that I can't remember now. The toast was really yummy -- thick and buttery and really flavorful. The potatoes were also really good -- crispy to the point where I wondered if they deep fry them. I honestly cannot recall what anyone else got, so my breakfast must have been good since I was entirely focused on that. Coffee was nice and strong. Oof. Let's face it, breakfast is expensive. I don't know how, as eggs and potatoes are about the cheapest things you can buy, but....that's life! That being said....sometimes you get lucky, and it's absolutely worth the price! We made an early morning airport drop off so we stopped here for breakfast. My first (only?) complaint is that they did not open until 8am on a Saturday. That seems late and we had to sit and wait in the car. However, I guess we were lucky we were there early because by the time we left the place had filled up. I ordered the Mexican omelet. it was HUGE and full of chorizo and topped with a (lot of ) delicious red chili/salsa. Potatoes were soft pillows and perfectly done. Because I can never decide between sweet and savory I had to get a pecan pancake to go with it. YUM. Huge, fluffy pancake (and if I recall a very fair price, IMO). Toast was good too. Let's not count my carbs for the day, ok? I ate about half my meal, and the rest I stretched into THREE other (small) meals so I guess the price wasn't too terrible. Wonderful hidden gem! In the middle of a very nice residential area. Went on Mother's Day, there was a 30 minute wait but was a beautiful day and we did not mind waiting. Cute little homely spot around Lake Nokomis. Had things on the menu that a California girl like me was excited about! Chiliquiles and huevos rancheros. MMmMMM! YUM. Although I really wanted to get one of the Mexican breakfasts I Opted to try the bloomington breakfast sandwich. The waitress said the hint of maple syrup really complimented the Asiago cheese. Hot Plate was by far the best breakfast I have had in a long time. Other reviewers hit the nail on the head - the wait time is substantial, but the food, the service, and decor of the restaurantized house are incredible. A brisk early December Sunday found four Kansas Citians trolling for breakfast in Minneapolis. Tired and restless from a long night prior, our bodies needed grease and a base layer in anticipation of the day to come. Hot Plate did not disappoint. Satiated by the free coffee at the front of the house, we assumed our position in the queue by the front door and waited...and waited. Seating is at a premium here and it looked like singles and two tops were getting in quicker than larger parties. Keep that in mind. Service was lightning fast. All around the table, we were ready to roll within 3 - 4 minutes of seating. Bacon pancakes, chicken fried steak w/ eggs, BYO omelette, and a pumpkin waffle crowded the 1950s style diner table. 15 minutes of shoveling food left us fat and happy after a well deserved meal here at this outstanding establishment. I'd be hard pressed to consider making the seven hour drive to come back just for Hot Plate. I will however, put it at the top of my list for future visits to the 612. The carnitas scramble is a must try...my posse gets that every time for its consistency - tender and full flavored caramba! On my list to try are the caramel rolls....word on the street is fabulous. Our server dude with the longish dark hair (no name tag) was super friendly and efficient and the food appeared lighting fast. Now if they would amp their game with a better local strong coffee, they'd get the 5th star! Under new ownership the place seems cleaner than in the past....no more dust on the knick knacks and no stale food smell. Always looking for a new.place to try breakfast on weekends and we were heading into Mpls and this came up on Yelp. It's in a cute neighborhood and we loved the feeling of it right away. It's small, so during busy times it's going to be a wait, but we tend to be early birds for breakfast and got there close to opening time. The decor is really cute....busy decor with walls covered with stuff...but cute! Lots of great 70's era stuff to look at and remember back (for those of us who were around WAY back then anyway). We started with a Caramel Pecan Roll which was terrific! Big pecans and plenty of rich caramel sauce over it and baked into it. Very tasty and a generous size too! My husband had the Breakfast Burrito and he really liked it. It was a pretty decent size and he liked the flavor. I had the BYO (Build-your-own) omelette and did asparagus, bacon, onion, and swiss and ordered a side of hollandaise sauce as well. It came quickly with really good American fried potatoes on the side. Instead of the toast choice we wanted to try a pancake and decided to try the Lingonberry Butter pancake. It was really good, the size of a dinner plate, and we didn't even use syrup. Overall it was a great experience and a fun atmosphere. The one area that needed help was the service however. It was nice enough at the beginning and we were brought water right away and the server took our order pretty quickly. The biggest problem was after getting the food and trying to get a coffee and soda refill, get a takeout box, the bill etc. There were about 4 people (servers?) behind the counter chatting much of the time we were there, but not only our table but a couple of others around us as well were looking for coffee/bills or whatever and the team was chatting and looking at their cell phones behind the counter and didn't look up or make rounds for quite a while. We weren't sure what all their roles were, but that was a little frustrating as we had nothing to drink for over 20 minutes. It's a really small place so that was disappointing as they could easily have looked up even once from where they were standing and noticed that about 3-4 tables were trying to get their attention. But despite that service glitch, the food was good and the place was really comfortable and cute so we'll give it another try for sure! read more

Yummy food with a diner feel. I went withy boyfriend in a Saturday morning and we had to wait about 20mins. The wait wasn't bad since they have old school board games to play, an outside patio to relax, and they are across the street from a cute antique shop. Our waitress was nice and attentive. She told us how we could add pancakes as a substitute for bread for a $1 more which we gladly did. Both of our omelettes were filled with veggies, meat, etc. The pancakes were thin but good and the fruit butter added a bit of sweetness. I stopped in for a late breakfast on a weekday. There was no wait, but the restaurant was still pretty full. It is one of those places with a lot of tchotchkes and tacky art all over that contributes to a fun funky 70's basement feel. The menu is fairly focused for a breakfast/brunch place, but what they do they do well. I ordered the Caramelized Pecan Roll which was wonderfully sticky and sweet, and big enough to share. I moved on to the Carnitas Scramble which was a perfect combination of flavors. I could also do an order of just the Carnitas it was so good. My only complaint was the potatoes, they seem to be deep fried potato squares and the rest of the food really deserves some good hash browns. (I am a bit of breakfast potato snob.) Overall this is a great little neighborhood brunch place and I will dream of the Pecan Roll. read more

A MUST everytime we go to Mall of America/Minneapolis. We go for breakfast every single time we take a trip with the kids to this place. Breakfasts is so darn good and not pricey at all. I usually get their Ham & cheese omelet and my wife gets their Carnitas plate. Both are so good! Never disappoints! Definitely a place to go eat breakfast if you are in town. At first glance, Hot Plate looks like it could be just another house on the block...it's located smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood. Well lucky for the people living on this street, you have a high quality neighbor! You have the kind of neighbor that would give you a cup of suga or give you an egg or two if you were in need. THAT kind of neighbor y'all. There was a wait time when we came, but we predicted there would be before coming here since it's only open until 3pm, and it was a weekend. They gave us a buzzer, we took a walk around the neighborhood, came back and waited in the colorful chairs outside (plenty of seats for guests that are waiting). Within 5 minutes of sitting in the chairs, our buzzer went off, and we were seated at the counter by the cash register. Hot Plate is the perfect place for breakfast or brunch, but what most people don't know, is that they recently started a taco night on Friday nights! The waitress let us check out that menu as we waited for our food, and it sounds like they have some bangin' tacos I'll have to explore next time. I ordered the Grand Marais and my boyfriend ordered the Carnitas scramble. Mine came with a side of breakfast potatoes, and an English muffin. My boyfriend's came with a side of breakfast potatoes and white toast. Our meals were the right way to start off the day...everything was delicious. The eggs in my Grand Marais were lovely...the walleye and eggs (soooo fluffy) had me on cloud nine. The asparagus is a nice touch as well. I paired my meal with a mimosa and later on, had a poincettia drink for the first time. I'd recommend both of them! My boyfriend's carnitas were excellent...and that jalapeno was superb. This brunch experience had me lickin' my lips all the way home....Hot Plate is one of my new favorite brunch spots in the Twin Cities! The service is fabulous (the waitresses there know how to take care of you and they have awesome personalities to boot!), the food leaves you craving more, and the interior of the place has a life of its own...so much character and pizzaz!
