This place is purpose built for a breakfast café. The only drawback is getting here. It's in Savage, Minnesota. That's a little bit hard to reach, a little bit out of the way. Otherwise, dirt parking lot very homey ambience, excellent service. I got the chicken fried steak and eggs, the waitress said this item was featured on the local news. I see why. It was possibly the best steak and eggs breakfast I've had, chicken fried, that is. Coffee, average. Prices, average. Overall, this place is a little Oasis of Fine Food. Let me start off by saying that the people were great but as far as the food it was awful. Place was nice. I got a cheese omelette being lent and all no cheese in the middle just a piece of really bad what looked to be a kraft cheese piece thrown on top and not even melted. Never had I have a omelette without cheese in the center now I did ask for crispy hashbrowns and I could barely cut though them but if they think that's crispy then that's my fault. This was our first visit - my daughter in law and me. We arrived for breakfast around 8:30 on a Friday morning. This place was bustling. We seated ourselves and immediately received coffee and water. We both ordered the "Windmill Favorite". My eggs were PERFECTLY over easy. This was an incredibly generous serving of food: Two eggs, three sausage links, hash browns, and two pancakes with a large portion of butter served with warm syrup. Normally, I would have taken some of this home however, I stopped eating because I was hungry about half way through and continued to finish because it was so tasty! There was a steady stream of people coming and going while we were there. The servers were friendly, personable, and the food came amazingly quickly. We felt like we were in small town Minnesota from the moment we walked in. This is definitely a neighborhood gem and we'll be back many times! read more

I have lived in savage for 24+ years and always wanted to go here, but never did. Until today. Why did I wait so long??? Ok, it's not overly appealing from the outside. Concrete brick walls and a dirt parking lot...but as you get closer you notice the benches, flowers and attention to detail. The people that work here must actually care about such things... It's small, but we arrived at the perfect time and were seated at the last table available (when we left there were several people waiting outside for an open table). I can't remember the last time I've said a restaurant was overstaffed, but given how small it is...seating maybe 40?...I saw at least 9 employees. That's a high ratio. So you'd expect timely service, yes? Well, you should! It was great. Everybody we met was friendly and relaxed...like they actually enjoy their job...and we were offered drinks right away and then submitted our breakfast orders when the drinks arrived. I ordered eggs bacon hash browns and toast and my spouse also had pancakes -- and everything was delivered in a timely manner and tasted great. It's not fancy. But if you like good, home cooked food that is not overpriced -- delivered by friendly servers and team members who enjoy their jobs, then well, this staple (since 1972) of a restaurant might be your place! The family that owns this business is the sweetest. They're so funny, caring, easy to chat with, and they bring fantastic service to your table. And the food is equally as great as the people. Fantastic portions for the price, delicious coffee, the cinnamon rolls are OUT OF THIS WORLD ( and they're literally the size of a full to-go box for less than $10!!! ), everything we've tried is something we'd order again. I love the breakfast sandwich, perfect size for a light breakfast and a great price. Their fries are the best in town. Not kidding, I am a French fry fanatic and these are outstanding. I went back not even 48 hrs later for more fries lol. From the outside of this place you'd have no idea you're stepping into your new regular breakfast spot. But as a former truck stop, they've done tremendous amounts of work to this place and made it feel so quaint and homey inside. I'll be honest, we've always driven by and joked that we needed to check out this dive breakfast joint and never really thought much of it beyond that. How wrong were we!!! We stopped in on a Monday, the place was bustling and yet it was a great experience. It's a small place but don't let the outside fool you! Inside is so farmhouse chic, the food was great (HUGE portions for the price) and the service. Man, the service was incredible. Drove past this place for a few years after moving to the area and then finally noticed something. The unpaved parking lot was always filled with trucks and cars. Trucks indicated to this rural boy that people with an appetite were being made happy. Finally decided to check it out - and had the best chicken fried steak I have ever had in Minnesota. I have tried them at different places since 1992 and couldn't find one that was just right. The fork tender delicious steak and gravy was all I hoped it would be. I've been back for regular biscuits and gravy, hot beef sandwiches, French toast and more. Never disappointed. I highly recommend this little diner above any other breakfast or lunch place in the area. 10/10 - just be prepared for the unpaved parking lot! read more

This is the first time we visited this restaurant. You drive up a dirt road and you get a little concerned, but then you see all the fancy cars and go in. We somehow found this hidden gem while searching for places along our route. Thanks to all the great reviews that got us in the door. Plus: big parking lot! Big enough for truck & trailer and tons of cars. Cute little restaurant. We walked right in and sat down at 10 am. on a Thursday morning. We snagged a spot right on the other side of the cashier corner. Cute decor inside. There are lots of farm chic times along the walls. Clean overall. Very cheerful welcome from the staff when we came in. There are only about 14 tables and a few seats at the bar near the kitchen window. We were greeted and brought drinks immediately. The menu is easy and I found they had eggs Benedict, which was what I was craving. I mentioned the chicken fried steak to my hubby and that is what he landed on. Flood came out fast. My eggs Benedict was perfect. The eggs perfectly poached over thin ham and English muffin. I did not get the hashbrowns with mine. It would have been extra and also too much food for me. Hubby enjoyed his meal, too. The scrambled eggs were simple and fluffy. His hashbrowns were perfect crunch on the outside and soft in the middle. The gravy smothered chicken steak hit the spot for him. They had a good selection of jelly for your toast. The staff was joking around and cheerful. Clean restaurant. Clean bathroom! My in-laws love this local breakfast spot, and we got to go there the weekend before Thanksgiving. Think it was the first time they've repaid them a visit after remodeling, and the experience didn't disappoint anyone. Standard variety of breakfast menu items. Definitely enjoyed eating the country fried steak, scrambled eggs with hashbrowns and toast. Their gravy came pretty close to beating my favorite. Also enjoyed the vibe of the local establishment. We've lived in the area over three years and finally just made our way in over the weekend. It might not look like much when you're flying down 13, but do not sleep on windmill!! For as busy as it was, we had a short wait on Sunday morning under 20mins. From the host to all the servers who were constantly working as a team to keep orders running & coffees full, they were all wonderful. This is the pinnacle of an American breakfast. Everything was delicious, but be warned the portions are huge lol! The prices are so affordable, it's somewhere you could take the family without breaking the bank. A hidden away treasure looks like the back of a gas station from the road. You drive across a gravel parking lot to a white building with ramp and notice a wording on the building windmill cafe. That space was a tiny diner years ago as part of a truck stop. They have handicap ramp and stairs. A tiny vestibule that was full of waiting people. No more than 12 tables, counter to eat at and very clean. A bench in the lobby, cashier and greeter takes your name and party size. One single windmill on the wall. Clean laminate grey floors, curtains like a kitchen over front windows. Some tables but a lot of two seater high booths with a table and two more chairs to seat four and Very comfy. Visible kitchen but little noise. Clean restrooms and nice. Casual and homey! Twenty minute wait went fast. About four servers and cleanup person. Windmill breakfast my daughter had with hot delicious food. Cheese laden Obrien's, three sausages, pancakes, eggs, juice and hot off the grill. I had Eggs Benedict and hot and fresh. Perfectly toasted, buttered English muffin, eggs and Canadian bacon perfect. A large crispy square of hash browns. Delicious. A menu of breakfast combos, great hot coffee, vanilla creamer for coffee and they sell their mugs! $9.00 each and unbreakable! Boosters for kids and lunch menu. But hurry... they close at 2pm! Excellent coffee to start, ordered the Farmer's Breakfast with a side of hollandaise and it was perfect. The foundation of this breakfast is hash browns, and they were cooked to perfection. Very generous portions, and it's of options on the menu to choose from. And though we were set on breakfast, the table next to us had ordered hot roast beef sandwiches, served with mashed potatoes and smothered in gravy. We were drooling over those. Windmill is a small cafe/diner located in Savage, MN. They do have a parking lot available which is nice. It's not the most glamorous place, but it is what is expected for a classic breakfast/lunch spot. My bill was like $13 so the price was definitely right for the amount of food. The staff was friendly and the wait wasn't terrible. Expect a wait when you go. No trills here, but everything I had was good. Side note - I'm obsessed with the mugs for the coffee. I had Gourmet Hash Browns - green peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheese, & choice of ham, bacon, or sausage. I went with sausage. This comes with two eggs & a side of toast. For what it is, this place is really great -- just really, really well made breakfast and lunch fare, that won't break the bank. The location is a bit small, and helps to get there early before a rush but they seem to really do well getting the food out and folks seated, compared to some other places. My wife and I went on a Sunday morning and it didn't take long to get our table, order and drinks attended to. Loved the Noah's favorite I ordered and the coffee was great. We have been going to Windmill Cafe for years. Recommended it to many people. We went today for the Walleye lunch. So disappointed. The service was terrible. Our lunch was one small walleye filet, mashed potatoes which were rustic but good. Dessert was included but our server brought one to my husband (grinning flirtingly at him) none for me until she brought our bill and was then like "Oh! You didn't get dessert!" Drinks were not refilled until we were almost ready to leave. So disappointed. This was SO out of the ordinary. We will return but hope to see old service & the owner on premises. read more

Brilliant hole in the wall place run by a husband and wife. If you are looking for a simple good breakfast then this is the place. They made the best loaded hash browns I have eaten anywhere in the last 20 yrs I have lived in the USA. Great service and good coffee! I would come back again if I was in this area. "Looks can be deceiving" when you look at the building front he outside. They have ample parking which is a plus.
