Was so excited to finally go to this place, but there was NO wheelchair/ADA entrance, so we simply went somewhere else.

One mist-frilled Saturday morn, I arrived with my familiars--each cloaked in faint waffle anticipation--and we entered a realm where diners whisper prophecy through gingham curtains. The food was magnificent: hashbrowns with just enough crisp to spark ancestral memory, and eggs so well-seasoned they briefly unlocked a second language. The service danced the line between psychic and prompt--our server manifested coffee before I even dreamt it, and left the cream pitcher humming softly. As for the ambiance, Sunlight channels pure Grandma Gothic--floral wallpaper with secrets baked in, booths that embrace you like a knowing aunt, and light that refracts through syrup as though mourning the decline of butter diplomacy. We loved our breakfast at this little cafe. Great service, good food and nice diner/cafe ambiance. Not fancy, but we weren't looking for that. We will return. A plus was the option of warm corn tortillas in place of bread. read more

I ordered the French Toast combo with bacon and scrambled eggs. It was the perfect amount of food for brunch and the bacon was cooked very well and super crispy. This is a small diner, so I'm sure if you come during busy times, especially the weekend, you may be waiting. Arrive early. read more

Recent updates have been made inside, like new carpet, paint, and booths, but the small town diner charm remains. We found it to be busy with patrons and help when we arrived for breakfast-lunch. I like coming here for their sandwiches and fries, which are my usual go-to's, but we felt breakfasty. I would not recommend the corned beef hash, it is very much the stuff you get out of a can. The hash browns were better, and well seasoned. Spouse had a sausage and egg breakfast sandwich that looked homemade and smelled amazing. Reasonably priced, we walked out with an under-$30 tab, which these days seems to be a fever dream anywhere else. Service was quick and very friendly. A serviceable local spot for breakfast. Nothing that really seems to jump off the menu as special, but you will get a hearty homestyle meal here. They defined seem to have some local regulars here and the staff ate friendly. read more

I was a good customer as was my husband and friends. I sat at a booth yesterday with one dirty plate on it. The red haired waitress started screaming at me to move to another table i have never been so humiliated in my long life. I came in with very low expectations, only to be pleasantly surprised! The service was quick and efficient, food served up in a timely manner, for not a lot of cash. The ham was cut thin, but I liked it that way. This place is very convenient diner for my friend that lives blocks away but had never visited Sunlight. This is truly a wonderful diner that serves food at a great price ($5 for a full entree? awesome!). I was suprised at the variety of food options considering that this restaurant is tucked in the corner of Marie and 7th. They offer American, Mexican, Italian, and Greek cuisine. I'm so glad that my best friend took me here, I was literally ready to be rolled out of the restaurant after eating so much. I highly recommend the homemade breakfast potatoes! read more

Horrible customer service the lady that looks like a man working the front register is extremely rude and nasty! I ordered a cheeseburger and it was drenched in oil, mustard, ketchup and coleslaw juice all over it! It stunk really bad very disappointed with the food quality! Terrible place with an utter disrespect for customers. We came here last week and had a nice experience and decided to go again today. Perhaps the waitress with glasses (who served us last time) had a personal distaste for us because no greeting or anything. Waited quite a long time and had to ask twice for water for our child which never came. We had to witness other customers being served before us even though we were before them. My wife asked why we hadn't been given water yet and why others were being served first (politely - my wife is almost too nice) and instead of being courteous and apologizing she just said, "You have 3." Didn't realize 3 is a lot to this restaurant but I guess 2 people next to us was just so many less people. She asked if we wanted to cancel instead of just checking with kitchen to make sure our order was being prepared so we left. I have a strong suspicion she remembered us from last time (hard to forget the Latina and Chinese couple, with an old Chinese grandma and insanely cute kid :)), and that my mom (old Chinese grandma) questioned the bill. She probably didn't like that even though my mom was correct about the extra incorrect charges. Perhaps she doesn't like Chinese people mixing with her kind (don't want to go there but you never can tell). She's probably one of those insane Latinos that actually SUPPORTS Trump. Worst part is I have a horrible feeling she's one of the owners too. Don't go. The place isn't worth it. Customer service and general respect for humans ARE required in the restaurant business and not just knowing how to toast a piece of bread and stir eggs. Been to Sunlight a half-dozen times now - mostly for breakfast, once for dinner. It's a great little place. Breakfasts are really good, and very reasonably priced. I particularly enjoy the Mexican breakfast options - and the pancakes are good. And just ate there a few nights ago for dinner for the first time (get there early, they close at 6:30). The steak encebollado was very tasty - generous portions of thinly sliced steak smothered in onion. It's a little family place in downtown South St Paul. Nothing fancy at all, but the staff is friendly, the food is good (American and Mexican options, with a couple of Italian or Greek dishes, too), the atmosphere is pleasant, and the prices are great. The food was bad. I went in with low expectations, but finally decided to give it a try. It was packed and there was a wait which I took as a good sign. Eventually after 20 minutes, we got a table and ordered our drinks and food. Eventually after 4 cops of coffee, our food arrived 45 minutes later. My wife had corned beef and hash which looked like it was dumped out of a can and quickly microwaved with zero flavor. I had the French toast deluxe which included 2 pieces of burned French toast hidden under 1 piece that looked properly cooked. The bacon reminded of the thin cheap precooked Hormel bacon that you just have to microwave and the toast was the cheapest bread you could find. The theme seems to be that everything you order is made with the cheapest ingredients you can find and not worth ordering even if your tab for 2 is less than $20. The service itself was average. This is a fantastic establishment. The prices are very good, $4.95 for two eggs, toast, hashbrowns, and bacon/sausage/ham. No other place can beat the prices here, and the food is always great! Every time I get eggs over easy, and every time they're perfectly done, much better than Perkins. Wait staff is very friendly as well, I've brought many friends and family here and all have loved it. The servers are always friendly, remember you if you've been there before, and your drink never gets low. The prices are ridiculously low....seriously. A full gyro platter (LOADED) for $4. Good and fast service! No empty tables at 10 on a Sunday and got food in less than 10 minutes. Their home fries are my favorite, better than the hash browns in my opinion. Prices were really reasonable. The hueveros rancheros were really good, perfectly cooked eggs and their beans are really good as well. Silver dollar pancakes are nice size and fluffy. Their bacon is ok, nothing special. Lots of interaction and refills of drinks. I would go back for sure. Can't believe we tried this place last of all the breakfast spots in town. read more

My family and I have lived in SSP for 3 years now and have always wanted to try this place. Today we finally did and I was surprised at the price and the food. The decor isnt anything fancy and the service was so-so and thats why I didnt give it 5 Stars. The price was excellent less than 30 for my wife two boys and myself! My wife ordered two tacos and it came with an extra tortilla and enough food on the one taco to split it into two tacos so you get four tacos for 6 bucks. Thats a great deal. Overall if you live in or are visiting South Saint Paul I would definitley recommend this restaurant. read more
