I sat at the counter and watched the skilled cook make other meals to order (omelets, burgers, and sandwiches) with care and attention. My breakfast sandwich (sausage patty, cheese, and fresh scrambled egg on a toasted english muffin) was tasty making for a perfect on the go lunch. In from out of town and tried this place based on other peoples Yelp reviews. Husband and wife were working the small restaurant with about 8-10 tables. Great portion sizes for breakfast. Had a bacon and cheese omelette. I can honestly say, I've never had more bacon in an omelette than I had at Hovie's. They provided two in house hot sauces which were both good, but the mango habanero was amazing. Let's start with it is really small and quaint. The owners are awesome, nice, and attentive. Like having a private chef. The menu is decent for the size of the place. They serve a full breakfast and lunch. My two colleagues and I sent for a late breakfast, and all chose breakfast as opposed to the lunch. All three of us ended up with pancakes, but different styles, all had two eggs (different styles), and I had bacon the others links. We all agreed it was really good and hit the spot. Located this place on Yelp for breakfast and it didn't disappoint. Welcomed in the door, immediate drink order and arrival, and the friendliest service throughout the entire meal. Ordered the diced ham and eggs which came with a side of hash browns and toast. All of it was wonderful! (I would suggest putting the eggs and ham over the hash browns and smothering it all with gravy as a new dish on the menu. Just my crazy idea, but I think it would be a hit!) We love local mom and pop type establishments. A large orange juice here is served in a large glass. Coffee is refilled. We ordered eggs benedict and a breakfast combo. Both orders came with hashbrowns and that is where this restaurant struggles. They prepare the hashbrowns in advance and then heat them up. The hashbrowns tasted old and were set aside after 1 bite each. Both the benedict eggs and the the combo eggs were overcooked. There was a cook and a server present. After our order came the server was busy with other customers so she never checked back until we had pushed aside our half-eaten breakfasts. There is plenty of free parking. The restaurant is small but it didn't fill up on the day we stopped in. Very disappointed in the hashbrowns and eggs. read more

Walking in is like a visit to the past. On the wall hung history of the area in the small confines of the restaurant. The menu is simple, one side breakfast the other side lunch. It did not take long to start to realize decisions were going to be tough. We went for the Corn Beef Hash Supreme and could not have been more pleased with our decision. We were told it takes a bit more time but so worth the wait. Portions are huge. Service from the waitress was great! Not sure why I thought eggs over medium would have a runny yolk, but my yolk was completely cooked. That was a bummer. The corned beef was actually more like deli meat chopped into little pieces mixed with hash browns and onions. It was a bit too sweet for my taste, and it almost felt like I was eating rice from the hash browns. My friend's blueberry pancakes were pretty good and her bacon looked perfectly cooked. Overall, I think I just ordered the wrong dish. Like the homey feel of this place, and the food is no frills basic breakfast. read more

Thanks to the recommendations of several clients who advised me Hovie's, I have a really good place to catch a meal. Breakfast is one of my favorite meals and it was breakfast that I came in for this day. Their lunch menu does look pretty good, however I can eat breakfast anytime of the day. When I walked in I could see this was a local place and it seems to be family owned. A younger lady was talking with some customers and an older similar looking lady was behind the counter cooking. I received a friendly greeting shortly after taking a seat. While several items looked good I settled on the Denver omelet with hash browns and an orange juice. My food came out pretty quickly. Lets talk about orange juice. I ordered a large orange juice and received a large orange juice! How many times have you ordered a large orange juice and received orange juice in an over sized shot glass? Great start. My omelet was excellent! It was huge and one of the better omelets that I have had. Ham? There was a heck of a lot of ham in that omelet! The sauteed onions took this omelet to the next level. The only downside was my hash browns. My omelet was hot and fresh, my hash browns sadly were not. They tasted like they were cooked earlier and then reheated. Otherwise this was a very good meal, affordable with friendly service. I look forward to returning for breakfast again and would like to try their lunch sometime too. read more

Umm...yes! I discovered this place from yelp reviewers and boy was I happy I listened! This is the cutest Mom and Pop shop in the middle of a strip mall in Eagan. It's small and old but the mom and pop working there were very friendly and hospitable. I have a complicated name and she took it upon herself to know my name before I left the restaurant and chatted with me as if she knew me before. You don't get that these days! I was so impressed! Oh yea, this is a food review! The hot turkey sandwich I literally devoured was rightfully devoured! It. Was. So. Good! For lack of a better word! You gotta love a mom and pop operation. I love discovering them and love those discoveries even more if they're any good. Hovies is an awesome place with good, simple food and friendly staff to boot. I went with a co-worker and it was packed. Since it wasn't quite noon I had a hankering for breakfast, but I was denied - our server apologized as they weren't serving breakfast that morning. I opted for a sandwich and fries, and it was tasty. Service was quick and friendly, and even though it's not a big establishment I was surprised how easily she served the entire floor. On top of it, there was only one line cook - he was rockin' it out. The place emptied out while we ate our entrees, and we got to talking to both of them. Our server is Vietnamese and was curious to my ethnicity. She nailed Filipino on her first try - good stuff! But talking with both of them solidified my idea that the Mendota area is very friendly.
