Stopped in here with friends on a Saturday. The place was pretty empty, but it was about 3pm. I ordered the brisket sandwich with sauce on the side and onion rings. The sandwich was good, meat was tender and smokey, and the brioche bun was toasted just enough. Thr onion rings were an added cost but worth it! Crisp and really yummy. Two of my friends ordered the prime rib dip and raved about the juicy meat and soft bun. My hubby ordered the meat tray with brisket, pastrami and pork belly with a side of coleslaw and onion rings. He liked the brisket but said the pastrami lacked spice, and the pork belly pieces were so charred they were dry. He was not impressed with the coleslaw either, saying it lacked flavor. So a little hit or miss, but I think it's worth the trip to Lincoln. I think we may try again after they've been open a bit longer and worked out some kinks. We all ordered some beers on tap and we're happy with those. They also have fresh made lemonade in a lot of flavors. Wait staff was very friendly and helpful. read more

Hops and Hogs is a relatively new restaurant, in Lincoln. We had our first meal there today (lunch). We shall return. For us today ....... service was fantastic (unlike some of the other reviews). Our waitress checked in on us numerous times. Two other servers also stopped by to check on us. Our order was taken quickly, and our food was served to us within about 12 minutes. The meal consisted of Pork Wings (Ribs), a Wedged Salad (Wedgy), Pulled Pork Sandwich and a Mini Wedge Salad (in lieu of French Fries). The Pork Ribs were slow smoked then deep fried and tossed in a honey sauce. I ordered my Wedged Salad chopped with cucumber, avocado and carrots. My choice of dressing was Italian. The Mini Wedge came with Pulled Pork Sandwich ... with Barbeque Sauce, Slaw and Pickle. We enjoyed the experience today. Generous portions along with tender, flavorful pork. Great new addition! Lots of options, friendly staff, and a hometown vibe. We tried the chicken tacos, the brisket sandwich, and the brisket tray. The house made chips were great and my daughter really liked the corn ribs. Look forward to going back and trying on of their other options plus the ice cream flavors looked so intriguing. read more

Hops and Hogs Country Smokehouse, located in Lincoln, CA, recently enjoyed their Grand Opening, endorsed by the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, local "foodies," and all those who enjoy fine "Americana cuisine" with the savory taste of smoke on the side. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by the "mascot" complete with cowboy hat. Until the new owners took over, this was Red's Country Kitchen, which seemed to have closed this April. The new owners have made extensive changes to the decor, including removing all of the mounted animal heads and "country" artifacts, streamlining the decor to make it look more like a barbecue restaurant. There is also new furniture. The layout of the restaurant hasn't changed, including the counter, kitchen and television monitor. Another fixture that hasn't changed is long time patron Kenny, who sits at the same seat at the counter and enjoys multiple cups of coffee. In the coming weeks, the restaurant will be opening up a shaded patio, complete with a misting system, to make the hot summer weather in Lincoln more comfortable for outdoor dining. Pitmaster and owner of the restaurant, Phil, took me outside to show me the pit. It's a big stainless steel box mounted on a trailer and heated by propane. There is a door on the side which Phil opened, which is where logs are burning to provide the smoke. Like most pitmasters in the area, Phil mostly uses oak - it grows in our area locally - but he also uses apple wood for other applications, such as when he's smoking fish. The pit is fueled by propane from a large bottle mounted on the trailer. Propane is used to provide heat for cooking and to get the oak or apple logs going. Various cuts of meat are placed on large racks which revolve slowly so each rack gets equal treatment to the smoke and the heat. This is quite a pit! From the "Smokehouse Specialties" section of the breakfast menu, I went with "Pulled Pork and Eggs," with a side of "Chili Verde" and a beer for dessert. In all of my years of eating, I'd never enjoyed pulled pork for breakfast, nor had I even dreamed of it. At Hops and Hogs, pulled pork for breakfast is a delicious reality! The breakfast started out with a generous helping of smoked, tender, juicy pulled pork, kissed by oak smoke from Phil's smoker, which really made this breakfast stand out from any other breakfast in the area. A little cup of in-house made barbecue sauce was on the side for dipping. You choose between hash browns or country potatoes and I went with hash browns, which were fried to a golden brown on the outside, with a lot of "crunch" and tender, juicy white on the inside. Eggs are cooked to order, and I went with my eggs fried sunnyside up, and sourdough as my toast of choice. I simply couldn't resist ordering a bowl of "Chili Verde" on the side, as I LOVE it! It really wasn't necessary as the "Pulled Pork and Eggs" is a very filling breakfast. Wow! This breakfast was simply amazing! The pork was tender, juicy and smoky, but not at all overpowering, as the talented pitmaster smoked it to perfection. The hash browns were perfectly grilled, the eggs were fried to perfection, and the toast was toasted and buttered just right. The small cup of barbecue sauce added extra flavor to the pulled pork. The "Chili Verde" started with a rich, thick green sauce, mildly spiced, with just enough "kick" to know you were eating something of Mexican origin. There were many chunks of smoked pork and the chili was topped with semi-melted shredded Mexican cheese. The chef has talent, as all of the flavors worked together to create a simply delicious "Chili Verde" experience! The taste of wood smoke made for a delicious breakfast, and you won't find another restaurant in Placer County that offers such a wide variety of smoked meat for breakfast! Hops and Hogs Country Smokehouse has carved un unique, smoky niche into the area dining scene, for "foodies" who savor a delicious, barbecue breakfast. This was our second time here. The first time they had just opened as a business. The service was horrible. The food was so-so. So, they have been open for a while now so we thought we'd go back and try again. The service was even worse this time . We were seated and given waters, and that was it. We sat there for over 10 minutes without any acknowledgment from anyone. My wife said that if someone doesn't come to take our order in the next minute we'd leave. They didn't, so we did. We walked down the street to another Lincoln establishment, got seated, order taken, food arrived in the same amount of time we had sat at Hops and Hogs. We so desperately want to like this place. We both agreed that maybe takeout is the way to go. read more

This was my first time visiting the restaurant. I had gotten takeout once previously, which was just O.K. Upon entering, my dad and I waited near the front desk. No one greeted us. After several minutes, and after several employees had walked by, I asked to put our name on the waitlist. The employee passed a list for me to put my name and number on. I asked how long the wait would be and he stated 20-30 minutes. The restaurant was only 2/3 full, with numerous open tables. I watched several other people walk in, not be greeted, and be confused by the lack of any customer service. Employees repeatedly walked past people waiting to be greeted. At one point, several employees engaged in conversation while guest milled around at the front of the restaurant. Once seated, we ordered food. My order came out incorrect but our waiter disappeared so after several minutes, I just ate what they delivered (it was close to what I ordered). The server checked on us once, after ~15 minutes. I was basically done by that point. My sandwich (BBQ brisket) was dry. The fries were flavorless. If It also took forever to run the check. I completely understand being busy. I was a server a long time ago so I can appreciate how hard the job can be, but this restaurant's employees moved slowly and without purpose. They weren't friendly and could use better management. I can look past poor service if I can clearly see employees making an effort -- or if the food is outstanding -- but neither was the case here. That's unfortunate, because I would really rather support local, independent restaurants rather than chains. read more

I brought 12 people to lunch at Hops and Hogs after a great morning of hiking. It was my first visit to the restaurant. Needless to say, we were all starving, and the menu did not disappoint. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals--from brisket, pulled pork and pastrami sandwiches, to burgers, pasta and chicken tacos. Several of us ordered the ice cream sundaes, since we were celebrating a few birthdays. Everything was delicious! While serving a group isn't always easy, the servers were amazing--friendly and responsive to all of our requests. They even provided us with separate checks which was very much appreciated. Well I had hopes. This spot has crushed the hopes of many a restauranteur. It's a huge space. Has a western vibe. Definitely could be a steakhouse. But smoked meat place could work The staff was awesome. Best part of the experience. They didn't use mesquite for smoking but local wood. Still, could be good Wasn't. Susana, our server, was just the right person to bring us our coffee and breakfast on a Sunday morning! She was welcoming, efficient and knew the menu well. It was our first time to eat there. The dinner menu looks yummy, so we might just drop in on Friday. Food-wise, our breakfast items were very good! There was a bit of kerfuffle with Hubby's Benedict choice. He requested no hollandaise on the eggs. But kitchen had mistakenly put the sauce on so they re-did that and apologized for the extra time it was taking for the order. Went around 5:00 Sunday to celebrate our anniversary. Not many people there....and after we ate our awesome meal, we have no idea why!! All four meats we had were perfectly cooked. I have spent plenty of time in Texas and I KNOW good bbq, especially brisket. Service was great, prices were definitely reasonable and our ice cream sundae dessert was just perfect! Wow, ok...this is my second time going there and I didn't think a restaurant could get better. First, let me say that this was for Mother's Day around 10 - 11am. They were a bit busy but they had room on their patio, which my wife eagerly accepted as it was immediate seating AND a beautiful day. We WERE a little concerned that we'd be forgotten, but we weren't and we had the patio for our little party of 5. So the place smells amazing (especially if you are on the patio where the smoker is!) and EVERY member of the staff we interacted with was super nice and pleasant, from our waitress and seater to the smoker guy who came out and checked on the meat, all added to a very great day. Now the part you really care about...the food. Guys! It was incredible! It was SO GOOD that we were already talking about what else we wanted to try the next time we stopped for food. Honestly, "SO GOOD" barely describes the surprise on my our face when I tasted just HOW GOOD it is. The Banana's Foster, the make your own breakfast burrito got the whole table talking excitedly after they tried it. Hands down my best restaurant experience in a very long time. Decades. To everyone at H&H thank you for making my wife's Mother's Day even more special with your super friendly attitudes and your epic-tasting food! Our first time at the new place, the hubs and I tried the grilled chicken and French drip Sammy. They were both good, the French dip was better when they brought some horseradish to go with it. The fries were hot and crispy. It was pretty slow but there was a lot of help ready to serve everyone. We had Sunday morning breakfast after a late downtown event that they sponsored. Unfortunately the whole experience was very poor. standard egg breakfast with dry scrambled eggs, country potatoes- pale color, straight from the fryer, dry with no seasoning, TOPPED with Bell peppers and onions ( vs cook the whole thing on the flat top together, season and use maybe some butter), toast burned on one side, pale on the other, rubbery thin pancake (needed a knife to cut it). My loco moco was decent, burger had maybe Montreal Steak seasoning (?), pretty strong, gravy was salty, eggs were good and rice was good too. Service was inattentive, we didn't get water refills, forgot the toast, had to flag them for the check. However they were chatting at the bar. A very large rectangle of pork belly - not sure how it could be soggy and dry at the same time. Impossible to eat as a taco. The "salsa" was the same - huge chunks of watermelon - the taco couldn't hold it! Ribs with corn ribs and beans. Ribs were very dry and the rub left an odd flavor. The corn ribs were a new experience and were pretty good. The absolute best of our meals - the beans!!! They were delicious. Brisket sandwich - very, very dry and meat was cut way too big. Our waitress Susana has worked there a long time and she always does a great job, though she was clearly a bit overwhelmed. She gets 5 stars. Cons: - The food. I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and specifically asked for no butter on the bun (dairy allergy). So, the sandwich came and the top bun was clearly grilled in butter, along with being smashed. The chicken itself was cooked fine but was definitely NOT crispy, it was breaded but soft. - Wife ordered eggs and brisket with home fries/breakfast potatoes. The plate came out with cold eggs, hash browns instead of home fries and the brisket was just flat out dry. Verdict: - We may give it a second chance in a few weeks, but this visit was a failure.
