Very unique sirilankan restaurant in the heart on London. Outside seating. Inside seating in basement is really cozy. I would not sit upstairs. We tried the hoppers experience where they bring you a little bit of everything. My son had the biriyani. My wife wasn't a fan so I deducted a star. Food tastes great. Great service

The food here was okay. I felt like there were chunks of spices that were not edible in every bite that I took. That kind of messed up the meal for me. The roti was good and crispy but not the most buttery one I ever had. The curry was flavorful but nothing really stood out as exceptional for me. I did like the spicy crispy calamari. The batter was fried perfectly. I would try another spot if I went back to London.

Hopper Marylebone is Pure Joy! it was a fntastic dinner at Hopper tonight! My family and I left with the biggest smiles. The food was an absolute dream, a total explosion of delicious new flavours. The Bone Marrow, Peppercorn Chicken, and the Chicken Biryani were all complete showstoppers, even the Chicken Kari. Loved every single second and every single bite. Inshallah they open a branch in Kensington & Chelsea soon!

Food was great, service was great, but overall, I felt like it was very overpriced. Ambiance was casual and nice, but not matching the price of the dinner. That being said, we enjoyed our dinner, but I don't think it was "elevated" Indian food, just regular good South Indian food.

So much food! At one point, our whole table was covered and we were just laughing because there was more coming. It was such a fun meal though and everything was wonderful. The staff were also so attentive despite it being so busy. I love Sri Lankan food and this hit the spot!

This place was great. I came with a large group and we were seated downstairs in one of their "vaults". We knew instantly that the vibe was going to be great. We ordered, honestly, probably everything on the menu. It's so hard to say what the favourites were, but a couple of standouts for me personally: 1. The Kappi martini (£10.50) was incredible. Also I loved the cup it was served in 2. Mutton rolls (£7) - just fantastic. Loved the hot sauce too 3. Beef rib fry (£12) - SO flavourful 4. Lamb kothu (£15) - generous portion and also packed with flavour 5. Jaffna crab Kari (£15) - messy to eat in the best way. Service was fantastic. I don't think I've ever had such attentive service before. At one point we had to ask a question about a crumble topping on the bone marrow (whether it contained gluten) and they were so kind to triple check. Very accommodating to allergies/dietary restrictions. Overall adored my experience here and would definitely recommend.

Nice intimate place, a bit cramped but lively with an attentive staff. The food is exquisite with flavors different from your comme toujours Indian cuisine. But then, it's Sri Lanken. The Chicken Kari, Hot Buttered Squid and Lamb Shank Biryani dishes filled our table of three. All were excellent dishes. My only issue if you call it an issue was the Lamb Shank Biryani had such a massive lamb shank for the bowl it was served in it was a bit difficult to navigate. Our Bread Pudding desert was nice, not spectacular in any way but nice and an ample portion. We all loved our dinner at Hoppers!

As a Sri Lankan myself, I am glad I stopped here for dinner. It takes a twist on traditional cuisine (definitely less spicy than I am used to), but the food is tasty. The ambiance is cozy and modern. Service is also good. A nice Sri Lankan option in London. I'd recommend it.

This place was such a wonderful find, definitely recommend coming here! We were staying in the neighborhood and did not have any reservations for dinner and luckily stumbled upon this restaurant. I had never tried Sri Lankan cuisine and I'm so happy we came here. We tried the mutton rolls, the pettah chicken buriani and raita, the egg hopper and the chicken kari. The chicken biriani was fantastic. I really enjoyed that it had a little kick and the raita it came with added a nice refreshing element. The chicken kari was also very delicious. We may have even enjoyed it more since the chicken was very tender. The mutton rolls and the egg hopper were okay, but I'd probably order other things in their place next time. The dishes and presentation of the food were beautiful.

The evening here was wonderful. We booked a semi-private dining space, which is a great idea for a bigger group. It's really hard to say which dish was the best one - every single one was full of flavors and a great amount. Would definitely recommend visiting!

This was our first meal in London and it was great. We didn't have a reservation when we walked in around 6:30pm but they were very nice and were able to seat us, as long as we finished our meal by 7:30pm. This place was a fusion between Indian and Sri Lankan and probably my first time having Sri Lankan food. We ordered a good amount of food: Chicken Chettinadu Bites, Hot Pepper Squid, Seafood Roti, Beef Rib Fry, Chicken Buriani +Raita, Black Pork Kari, Hopper. Everything had its own flavor, and most were fairly spicy. My favorite was actually the seafood roti because it was a very unique dish, with chopped roti, potatoes and seafood. Then it was the chicken bites, super flavorful. We figured we had to order a hopper because it seemed to be a signature dish at this spot, it was like a fried sweet thin cake, not really my thing, but some of my friends said it paired really well with the other dishes. I would totally come back but maybe try and get the chefs to lessen the spiciness. The interior was nice as well so a great overall sit down restaurant.

Hoppers is a traditional Sri Lanka food that is unlike any others I have tried. I have always wanted to check out Sri Lanka but since I haven't ever been this was a great running up option. I came here for lunch and was seated on the basement level. The fish we had ordered was said to take 25 minutes and was overall quite tasty and delicious. A lot of our other items that we had ordered first did come out quite quickly and we just never stopped eating. We had gotten some dosas, chutneys, sambals, octopus and fish dishes. Overall the menu has no description on the bottom but our server gladly explained many of his favorite items and really sold us on almost all of them. I wish maybe next time they would write their descriptions down below each item so people that aren't familiar with the cuisine would be able to eat it.

Gymkhana isn't trying to reinvent Indian food, but instead focuses on traditional, predominantly Northern Indian flavors and is cooked with precise execution. Despite the fact that I was not always agreeable with some of the flavor profiles (mainly because I haven't encountered them before), I can't deny everything was cooked to perfection. Ordered the Punjabi Samosa to start, the Tandoori Masala Lamb Chops, the Lasooni Wild Tiger Prawns, Chicken Butter Masala, amd Pork Cheek Vindaloo as entrées, and of course had to get some Basmati Rice and the Bread Basket (the fancy name for naan). Favorite dishes were easily the Tandoori Masala Lamb Chops and the Chicken Butter Masala. The Tandoori Masala Lamb Chops were massive and cooked perfectly medium rare with no gamey taste. And this Chicken Butter Masala is exactly how I envisioned the perfect butter chicken dish in my head. Service is...well, more normal restaurant than two Michelin star level. It was fine I suppose. Exactly what I would have expected from a restaurant of this level, but nothing special. The restaurant itself was not as big as I thought it would have been. Very nice decor inside and not super bright. The one thing I wasn't too keen on was the £150/pp minimum spend, which was especially grating because later timeslots had less of a minimum spend. I would have been more ok with it if the minimum spend was £100/pp, because you're 100% going to get there. Overall, I thought Gymkhana was a good experience that was worth trying. The food was tremendous for sure. I would be more of a fan if not for the high minimum spend because honestly I could just come here for the Chicken Butter Masala and some rice and be good. The biggest disappointment was the famous Black Daal. Since it's one of Dishoom's signature dishes, I expected something exceptional, but I found it overrated and not particularly memorable. The highlight of the meal was the roti wrap, which I did enjoy. I appreciated that the chai comes with free refills, which was a nice touch. Overall, I think Dishoom is overrated. Maybe it's because I prefer bolder, spicier flavors, but the food felt quite mild and didn't justify all the praise I'd heard. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't see myself returning.

I feel like all my friends who've been to London have come back talking about this place, and I'm happy to join their ranks. Dishoom was also one of a handful of dining options recommended by my hotel concierge for a party of 11, including kids. Booking was easy, via SevenRooms, no phone calls or emails necessary. It's a large restaurant, and part of a popular chain--I guess they have things figured out. The space was great, open and casual, exposed ceilings and eclectic decor. Lots of fans, which my three-year-old appreciated. Service was friendly and attentive. I started my lunch with a drink, a refreshing green India Gimlet, gin and Rose's lime with celery bitters and fresh dill. I also tried and liked a sip of the New Permit Room Old-Fashioned, a slightly sweet cocktail with coconut-washed bourbon, Pedo Ximénez sherry, and Medjool date liqueur. There was only one menu available for a party of our size, a pre-set family-style group feast for eight adults, to which we added a pre-ordered platter of lamb chops. I loved the variety of dishes that came with this meal, and every one of them was ridiculously delicious. (There was less available for the three small American children, but they loaded up on hotel breakfast and snacked on naan and colorful puffed crackers.) The first round brought trays loaded with keema pau, okra fries, and bhel, along with lime, cilantro, and sauces for serving. The keema pau was incredible, probably my favorite dish of our lunch, if in part because it was 100% new to me. It was a spicy, aromatic blend of minced lamb and peas with dill and lindi pepper, served with toasted, buttered buns to make little sliders. So much flavor, it almost explained, by itself, why the British could never leave India alone. The okra fries were warm and crispy, and I loved the bhel, a crunchy snack of puffed rice, peanuts, and Bombay Mix tossed with pomegranate, tomato, onion, lime, tamarind, and mint. The main course was another giant spread: chicken ruby, house black daal, awadhi jackfruit biryani, and chilled broccoli salad, plus our charred lamb chops, with sides of roti, naan, and raita. The chicken ruby was the highlight here, a fragrant, comforting curry with tender chicken in a buttery makhani sauce. The house black daal is a Dishoom signature, and it was lovely, cooked for over 24 hours. The biryani was fluffy and nice, studded with jackfruit, barberries, and sultanas. The broccoli salad was a fresh hit of green, enhanced with pistachio, mint, red chillies, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, dates, and lime. The lamb chops made for a hearty entrée with a lot of flavor, the lamb marinated, grilled, and finished with Kashmiri chilli sauce. The thin, griddled roomali roti and the fresh-baked naan were both great accompaniments, as was the minty, cucumbery raita. For dessert, we had a choice of kulfi, creamy ice pops available in mango, pistachio, or malai, the original flavor touched with caramel. All three were superb, so cold and milk, easy to throw down the hatch. This was, it turned out, an enormous feast, but everything was so delicious and well balanced that I didn't notice how much I was eating until I got up. I was still full several hours later, when we went to dinner. If you want to eat Indian food in London, you should definitely find your nearest Dishoom. It's a wonderful restaurant, with top-notch food and no hassle. I certainly intend to go again.

How coincidental is that, to be thousands of miles away from home in a different continent, and to come across a photograph of the very street corner I cross multiple times a week! I don't recall what my husband had (a chicken dish), but I had Acharri Murgha ("chicken curry cooked in a traditional pickling spice mix") and it was delicious! In the washroom, a woman, another tourist, started conversing with me, but she only spoke French, and despite being drunk and rarely speaking French, I was able to have a semi-coherent conversation (she was also a bit tipsy). I had a drunken conversation in French inside an Indian restaurant in England! Anyway, Punjab Restaurant is one of the best Indian restaurants I have been to, and it is no surprise that it has been around since 1946. [Yelp collections: Europe 2024; London, England]
