For many months since moving here from the mainland we've been looking for good New York style pizza. My husband is from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn and none of the several places we've tried here in Honolulu came very close. After seeing Hopohni featured on a YouTube vlog, we decided to give it a try. We found the pizza to be excellent! Wonderful taste, crust was not too thin or too thick, and the perfect browning and crispness. Plain cheese is our go-to flavor to judge quality of the crust, sauce and cheese, but their mushroom looked so good, we will have to try that in the future, too. Our favorite pizza spot stopped making pies a while back, so we've been searching for somewhere new. Hopohni had been popping up on our social media feeds recently and the pizza looked ono so we decided to give it a go. On a busy Friday night we placed the order and it was ready right on time. We opted to try the Pina which was a mix of chorizo, jalapeno, pineapple, pickled onions and more, as well as the cheese pizza. It was hard to decide with so many tasty looking options but the Pina seemed so unusual a good mix of sweet and heat that we had to try it. Both options did not disappoint, amazing taste, not too thin or thick just right, and the pizza wasn't greasy at all which is rare these days. They say the pie is 18'' but it felt bigger, I'd say one pizza could feed 2-3 people depending on how hungry you are. Overall the service was polite, quick, and the pizza was great at a fair price. The only negative that I can say is that parking may be a bit tricky but that's the case in a ton of places these days. Called today to see if I could preorder some slices for pick-up. The man I spoke to on the phone said that the slices I requested should be available upon pick-up. My colleagues went to pick up the order and when they returned, they said the man there said one of the slices wasn't available & that he told me that over the phone. He definitely said the slices should be available, so I thought that was strange to tell my colleagues something else. But it's not a huge deal, as we were all satisfied with our slices. Can't say much about the ambiance because I haven't been in store yet, but I can say that the mushroom slice is delicious & if I ever find myself around the shop, I would definitely stop in to try another slice. read more

The newest pizzeria in the Downtown Honolulu area, Hopohni is a small shop on Lusitana St, right before what looks like a Hongwanji or school. You have to look good or you might jus drive right by, it's a small shop with only a couple seats to sit and wait for your order not really a dine in experience. As you arrived there are a few pizzas that are ready for your convenience to order by the slice, or you can ask them to make you a fresh pie which should take up to 20 minutes. I would suggest ordering a fresh pie with the melty cheese. Today I decided to go with classic friends pepperoni as I always do for each pizza place and I also tried their sausage pizza. The pepperoni was nice and crispy and also topped with shreds of chiffonade Basil which I thought was a pretty unique twist and added an extra sweetness to the pizza. Their sausage pizza was made with multiple different types of sausages including Portuguese sausage if I'm not mistaken and topped with their homemade basil sauce reminiscent of a pesto. All in all the pizzas were delicious and you can tell they were all handmade by the owner himself with their own homemade pizza dough recipe. Just recently read about the newly open Hopohni neighborhood pizza shop and just had to try it as we LOVE a GOOD PIZZA! I called and placed an order for a Combination Pizza of Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Mushrooms, Olives with lots of sauce and meat. Clay and Alec were so friendly asked if I also wanted fresh basil put on when I went to pick it up. We were very fortunate to have gotten a parking space right in front of the shop or we could have gone to the small park across the street to eat it. Parking here can be hard to find if businesses here are busy. I tried the mushroom pizza and the combo. The mushroom pizza didn't look like pics I've seen of this pizza which looked like it was loaded with mushrooms. Mine didn't seem to have much mushroom. It also had a hint of a lemon taste which threw me off a bit. As for the combo pizza, it too was not loaded with toppings. Actually, didn't seem to have much toppings. The pizza itself? To be honest, I was a little disappointed after hearing so much about the crisp crust and it being like the real deal New York or Chicago style pizza. The crust actually reminded me of Tombstones Pizza which is frozen. Tombstone isn't a bad pizza, don't get me wrong. It's just not the best. My first experience here was not five star. The pizza might be, if I got a chance to try some, but the customer service was zero stars. I tried to order a couple of slices, but they told me none were available, but reassured me they could accommodate me if I waited 15 mins. I returned 15 mins. later and asked for the two slices that I ordered. They told me to wait until they got a couple of whole pizza orders put for pick up customers. Five minutes later, I was told that they were "backed up", and they're preparing a pizza for my slices, and will be ready in about 15 mins. That's what I was told the first time, and I was no longer in the mood for getting the run-around, so I left. It seems to me they prioritize whole pizza orders, and would rather not sell slices. Just came home from helping a friend chainsaw his mango tree and saw some slices in the kitchen. Scarfed them down and oh boy, even cold, I think this is one of the best pizza I've had here. The cheese slice was especially superb, thin up until the crust, and crispy on the outside and bready, chewy on the inside. Sauce was perfectly flavored with hints of oregano, salt, pepper, and garlic. The bottom had a little char on the bottom, giving it support and crisp! We popped in at 12 noon on Saturday and were ready to place an order without a wait. But we saw all the slices in the display so decided to try a variety for our first time. We had a cheese slice, a pepperoni slice, a smoked meat slice and a vegetarian slice. It smelled incredible in there but I didn't have high expectations because while decent pizza is fairly easy to do, great pizza is not easy to pull off. But when I picked up my pepperoni slice my hopes soared! The crust was perfectly cooked with small patches of dark color and folded in half lengthwise all the way to the inside of the slice. The taste and texture was perfect. The sauce was simple yet interesting. The cheese and toppings were in balance and clearly high quality. The overall flavor was right at the top of my pizza experience! It was so good we ordered two pies to take home and we are picking up three more pies to share with friends coming over tonight! I wish these guys the best and have no doubt they'll find great success. The whole time we were hanging around eating our slices yesterday there was a steady stream of neighborhood customers buying slices and whole pies.
