JJ Niebuhr is formerly the "JJ" in what used to be JJ Dolan's up on Bethel a couple blocks up from Black Shamrock...now known simply as J Dolan's, and still owned by JJ's former business partner, Danny Dolan. JJ was also the mastermind behind Dolan's famous pizza...the hook they devised to distinguish their Irish pub from that of their former boss and fellow Irishman, Don Murphy, owner of Murphy's across the street from Black Shamrock. When an opportunity to take over the former O'Toole's location opened up, JJ jumped at the chance, and split from Dolan's to hang his own shingle, now known as Black Shamrock. JJ bought his pizza expertise with him, and in my opinion, is now the best pie in town...plus his Duck drumsticks can't be missed, which aren't available at Dolan's. Been desperately searching for a pizza replacement since ili ili cash and carry closed. The Kahala J Dolan's sad pizzas just weren't cutting it. Brick fire tavern is good but European style and not the staple NY style. Much to my delight I finally tried this place - the hub had told me that it was opened by one of the original owners of JJ Dolan. Well he must've been the one who knew how to make real pizza. This Jersey tomato pie was so friggin delicious I coulda finished the whole thing myself except that I had also eaten some of their excellent and perfectly cooked fish and chips. First the pizza - it was almost like grandma style bc he drizzles more tomato sauce on top of the cheese. Not truly grandma style bc the toppings and cheese don't go all the way to the edges but honestly I'm a crust lover and their crust is super delicious and crisp. The sauce is amazing. It's not a huge slice like a real NY pizza but the flavors are all there. Fish and chips - I'm never big on this dish but these were cooked perfectly. Came out hot and crisp and light not oily. These fries were perfection - crispy, hot, seasoned but not too salty and potatoey on the inside but not too much. The fish was not oily and hot and perfect texture. The ambience is an Irish pub with character not a dive. There's a pay parking lot steps away. And for lunch it's practically empty on the weekday. They confirmed they do takeout and I will definitely be back to get pizzas from here. read more

I've been to Black Shamrock Tavern a few times and loved it. They open at noon and my group of friends arrive by 12:30pm. We order fries as the appetizer and 2 pizzas to share. The pizzas are made fresh and it takes about 20 minutes for the kitchen to make them. The crust is thin and slightly chewy. The toppings are generous. I've done take out before and the pizza is still good. Their cheese and pepperoni pizzas are priced at $18 each which is a good deal. You get 8 slices from each pizza. Most of the people who dine-in work in the downtown area. The lunch crowd is chill but if you go after work, it's loud. If there's a party happening on 1 side of the restaurant, it's even louder but all good. This is all part of the bar vibe and pau hana time. read more

We started coming here for the pizza and beer. This time we added the Fried Duck Drumsticks and they were the bomb. There's plenty of street parking or there's a public parking lot across the street. Pi Day - 3.14 I am not one to rave about pizza too much, but WOW!!! The joisey pie was amazing. I would have never thought that broccoli would taste so good on a pizza. With ricotta and garlic, this pie was top notch. Our table also ordered the Da Mo (since my hubby is a meat lover). It was also delish. I loved how you could pick up the pizza, fold it in half, and eat it without making a mess. Talk about perfection. This restaurant is located on Nuuanu - right across from Murphy's bar and grill. There is street parking and also a big municipal lot that charges $3/hour at night. I loved the atmosphere of this Irish pub - it felt so welcoming and everyone seemed to have a good time. Braaaah...i love this pizza. I dunno why...I just do. Maybe cuz not super heavy, and the toppings are evenly dispersed and go pretty close to the edge. I'm pretty particular about the dispersion of toppings. Got a bunch for the office and this is the first time all the pizza was wiped out by the end of the day. Thin crust style and I like that they have really interesting topic combinations that your normally don't see. Plus all their specials that are always changing! Chicken fritters were pretty much chicken tenders. The fries and bleu cheese dressing were yummy. I liked how the dining area was separated from the bar area. Located across the street from an iconic Irish Pub, Black Shamrock is another iconic Irish Pub with a different vibe in downtown Honolulu. One of the attractions about Black Shamrock is the kitchen makes and serves pizza - on the day I visited, J (owner, chef, great all-around guy) decided he wanted fired noodles and katsu...and made it into a pizza. Really? Yup, and it was actually tasty - great flavor, texture - not something I would make/order, but it was recommended and it was truly good. We also had the "traditional" pepperoni pizza - thin crust, great texture and flavor. Additionally, instead of chicken wings, duck wings are served. A different flavor and texture compared to chicken wings...its definitely good, something to try - and I would say, much more tasty than traditional chicken wings. A good friend and fellow Canadian (I'm also American) and I met for drinks and a White Pizza to drown our sorrows after the election results. Love this place, it's clean air and Celtic vibe. Ashley, our server and bartender, was able to come up with a couple of drink suggestions so we could forget what was happening politically. The first was a Jameson's Scotch and Ginger Beer (too sweet) so I changed over to Jameson's Scotch and Soda (much better). These were more like "bell-peppery poppers" than "jalapeño poppers," but hey, that might just be the newbie in me talking since this was my very first time having a jalapeno popper! The real winner of the night was the pork belly burnt ends pizza ($23), which, luckily for us, was on tonight's menu. Our server hyped it up, and the crust absolutely delivered--it was pillowy, with just the right bread-to-cheese ratio. However, the pork belly could've been a tad crispier, as most of the pieces leaned more "roasted" than "burnt," and a little more demi-glace would've gave it the extra flavor it needed. Went in for lunch and happened to stumble in on the final day of Restaurant Week, so an extra special surprise on the meal deal...we ended up ordering two pies, pepperoni and the lump crab andouille sausage, buffalo fritters which came with fries, and chose from the wide selection of draft pints. The atmosphere of this tavern is really inviting. The service was very good. As for the food, I do not recommend getting the tater tots. It looked like it was the leftover bit of tater tots at the bottom of the bag. It didn't even fill up the bottom of the basket they put it in. The soft pretzels were good and the horseradish mustard that it came with was tasty. We got one of the special pizzas which included sausage, arugula, and gorgonzola cheese. The pizza was tasty. The drinks were also pretty affordable compared to the bar right across the street and they had quite a selection to choose from. read more

I love coming here! When I found out O'Tooles closed and it was under new ownership, I came to check it out with my Hawaii posse. Great place that has just evolved into a really cool place to meet up with friends! We were lucky because it was J.J's birthday! So meeting the owner was pretty cool! They have a great collection of whiskeys and beers and some really good food. I had never seen duck drumsticks on a menu before and they came with a delicious hoisin sauce. First off I came here with a group from work, it gets a little busy so we snuck out of work early to beat the crowd. The service was great, JJ is an awesome dude. The beer, Guinness on tap was smooth and cold. And the pizza? I would say 5 out o 5! We have 2 different t ones both are excellent! Oh forgot, the list of Irish Whisky is also great. Stopped here for a pau hana beer with my dad before meeting the rest of our family for his birthday dinner this evening. Plenty of bar top seating and attentive waitstaff running beers and food to a crowded bar. I've been to black shamrock many times with friends, and we love the cozy bar feel without the Irish pub grunge. This place is a friendly spot to grab a drink (or a few!) and enjoy yummy food without breaking the bank. Bonus points that it's dog friendly too!! The staff are always friendly and helpful and they take good care of their customers. I love what they've done with this place, which used to be O'Toole's which was a fun spot to drink but it always smelled bad inside bc they allowed smoking and they didn't serve food. Black Shamrock had its glow up and she sparkles and smells great (if pizza were perfume). They keep it very clean and in true Irish bar fashion, there's tons of fun decor and tchotchkes all over the walls. You can sit at regular tables, high top tables or the bar. They serve AMAZING NYC style pizza with daily specials that feature classics and some inventive flavors (think brisket burnt ends). They also serve rotating pupu specials like chicken and duck wings, mozzarella sticks, salad, garlic bread etc. Everything we ate has been amazing. Their pizza is just like J Dolan's up the street but I prefer this spot bc the staff are friendly and give better service and it's bigger inside. Their pizza is just as good bc the former partner of JJ's (the old J Dolan's) runs the Black Shamrock now. And... they serve ranch instead of blue cheese with their chicken wings so automatic winner for me!! Solid pub. Been on our go-to list since we spend a lot of time at a nearby theatre. Drinks are drinks. Reasonable prices and decent selection of both hards and beer. Every bartender we've had so far has been good, but I've heard it could be hit or miss. Especially when they are busy. Food is pretty good as well. Let's face it, the pizzas here are the stars of the menu and the main attraction. Jersey style. IYKYK. Also other regular bar foods are pretty decent. I would recommend the duck drumstick app. The pretzel maybe a bit too much salt. But bar food, so whatever. We started with the fried mozzarella sticks which were typical variety found in most restaurants, however the pizza stole the show! We had the Da'Mo which is Italian sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, black olives and garlic on a thin crust that is toasted to the exact moment it is crisp and golden brown but not burnt. Holy cow their pizza is bomb! The texture/chew of the crust is so good. The toppings on the Joisey White Pie are freaking amazing. This pizza is craveable. Ricotta, garlic, spinach, tomato, oregano I think. We also like the Da 'Mo which is like a meat lovers with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and garlic (usually with black olives but Taylor HATES them with a passion!) He likes that they have non alcoholic beer options like Corona 0 and Guinness 0. They also have decent sides like jalapeno poppers but the pizza is where it's at! After seeing a local YouTuber give high ratings to the pizza at BST...we made a little pilgrimage downtown to give it a try. This is what I would call "honest pizza". Great toppings, zesty sauce, good crust... but is it the best pizza on the island? Not quite. There are still others I hold in higher regard. That said...this a quality pie. We got the Double Roni. It's simple and well done. Two sizes of pepperoni, tomato sauce and cheese on a cracker thin crust. I like a little more chew to my crust but all in all...solid! Oddly there was a bit of a bitter note yo the pizza. Not off-putting but we both noted it. BST is charming inside. Primarily it's an Irish pub and decorated accordingly. In many ways you feel transported off the island to some NY borough or NJ Shore town. Service could not have been friendlier. While this might not be my favorite pizza on the island..I have to give props to BST for turning out pizza of this caliber in bar setting. I would definitely go back. read more
