My wife and I recently moved to Boston from Texas, and every part of our move seemed to go terribly wrong, and the people involved were especially unhelpful. This all changed when Alex and his team helped us move our of a storage unit and into our new apartment. Immediately, they seemed much more friendly and trustworthy than the other service providers I had recently worked with, and their quality of work was outstanding. They were particularly helpful managing to find a way to get our Texas-sized furniture up three floors to our tiny New England apartment. Before I knew it, they were hoisting our larger pieces up the side of the building. Of course, beforehand, they made absolutely sure that our things were properly protected and that our balcony would support the operation. They were also helpful in advising what to do with our over-sized couch, which could not fit up the stairwell nor be hoisted. I would highly recommend their service. So I am from California and had no idea who to go to for my problem: My dad had passed away and I needed to move my mom into an assisted living center so that she could get the day to day help that she needed. The problem? I didn't live in Newton and therefore didn't know of any local companies. I found Hop Moving on a postcard that was in our mail and decided to give them a call. They were more than hospitable with me as I had to reschedule the moving date twice. They were punctual and checked every single room of my parents' old house before I locked it up for one final time. So what can I say? They really knew how to impress an out-of-towner and help out my sweet, old mother. I'd highly recommend them to anyone (especially those with fragile furniture) as they took extra care of what items needed special attention. Okay, full disclosure: my review is one year late. I moved in June 2013 and used HOP Moving and they were FANTASTIC! It only popped into my head that I had forgotten to review because so many of my friends are in the middle of moves right now and asking me who I used. I had never used a moving company before. It was always a "come help me move in exchange for pizza and beer" party. This time, I knew that wouldn't work (based on the amount of furniture and crap I have), so I shopped around for a moving company. I called places and got estimates for moving my 1 bedroom, 4 room apartment (with much furniture) from my old place to my new place...a distance of .33 miles (literally). Everyone else was ridiculously expensive, and having put down first, last, and security on a new place already, I was low on funds. These guys were amazing. I called them with a question about the coupon deal they had posted here on Yelp and they came up with a better arrangement for me altogether. We did a flat fee for 5 hours. I got a truck and 2 movers. It looks like this is a regular offer they have advertised on their website now. I have to admit that moving day got off to a bad start when they thought I lived on Columbus Ave in Boston instead of Columbus Ave in Waltham. So they showed up at 830am instead of 8am. They obviously didn't charge me for the mistake. They do charge for travel time to get to you, so that's something to keep in mind. I had everything boxed up, and they handled everything with care. I did find a gouge on one of my cheap target bookcases, but I'd blame that more on the quality of the furniture than on the care the movers took. The two guys that showed up were great. They were extremely professional and friendly, sort of quiet but whatever. I did get charged more than the flat fee, because my move took more than 5 hours and we had agreed on an overage rate ahead of time, which was still more than reasonable. I would DEFINITELY recommend these guys. From the first contact over the phone, through the move itself, they made moving so much easier and much less stressful. *Call way ahead of your planned move date. Other companies had already been booked up for the week I needed to move and this company happened to have the day I needed open, but you really need to get it scheduled way out in advance. read more

I had called Alex on phone to get a quote, he was a bit scruff and was not sure if they could do the job or not, but gave a good quote and eventually agreed on a date to move. The 3 guys showed up a bit early on the move date so that was surprising. They were very fast, meticulous & very nice too! They finished the job very quickly & were quick to unpack & set our place. Used hop movers for a move from Arlington to JP. Overall, good crew of guys that will get the job done...but there may be a few bumps along the ride... Pros: I had to change my move date day of BC my flight to Boston was delayed. They were able to push the time of the move a few hours back to accommodate. Well done! They also were able to deal with parking the 20 ft truck and basically just made it work without hassle of getting permits blah blah blah... In general they're good dudes...came on time...got it done at a low price....but... Cons Their truck broke down transporting my stuff. Took them about 4 hours to get it fixed and show up at my new place. A+ for persistence though. They actually moved out stuff from the broken down truck to a new truck. Excellent effort in the face of adversity :). That said, when they completed the move it wasn't free of casualties (hole in lamp fixture, cracked coffee table) which was a downer. Overall, for the price...for generally being no nonsense and getting the job done, I'd recommend them. But would suggest that one adjust expectations in line with the price you are paying. read more

I bought a deal from Angie's list- 2 men for 2 hours. I called to book and he told me that since I live 40 minutes away- I'm using up 1.5 of my paid hours and that the men would only do work for a half hour. If I wanted them to work more, it would cost me more money. The deal from Angie's list said NOTHING about travel charges outside of Newton! When I asked him about this he said, "well, what do you want me to do about it? How am I supposed to say what you want?". If I hire a plumber, they do not charge me any money for travel- it's all included in their cost of business. Do I have to pay for Hop LLC's lunch, too? How about their gas or sunglasses if it's sunny out? This company is rude AND they are con artists. I buy a service but only get 30 min out of the two hours I pay for???? I don't trust the way they do "business" and I definitely wouldn't trust them with my personal belongings. read more

I had such a pleasant and stress free experience with HOP Moving. Alex and another mover removed everything in my studio apartment in an hour and moved all my furniture from Boston to New Jersey the next day and re-assembled the furniture. It was such a quick and easy process! I have not one single complaint. They are very sweet guys who did not seem burdened by the work load. I have requested Hop service seeing all the positive reviews on Yelp and I was totally disappointed by their attitude and service. Alex was really mean and though we had an earlier quote, he wanted us to pay for an extra man and time. What could have been a 3 hour move ended up as a 7 hour move! Guys, please do not use Hop Moving. They are not friendly and not good at calculating your moving needs. Finally you end up paying more for poor service. read more

One of the 3 movers showed up half an hour later (rate was not discounted for that Half an hour). Furniture got chipped during moving. And it took them more than 6 hours to move a 1.5 bedrooms- all being pre-packed in boxes and no need to dissemble furniture. Also- not very efficient in packing stuff in the truck- they assured us that we have enough space - until last min when stuff was left behind because of space. No heads up that would be the case. One of the 3 guys was extremely efficient- moved most of the stuff in half an hour... The others 2 not so much- thus the 6 hours.. If you hire them- be on their case to keep on moving, and keep the pace- they def. drag it otherwise. Good luck! read more

Got a great price, but as others have said, you get what you pay for. Two items were broken in the move (one was the bottom connector on an ikea dresser, which is know is not the most durable of wood, but the dresser drawer kept falling out after that and the movers took no responsibility for the break, just acknowledged it and said some damage can happen in a move because the furniture is not strong). They were quick and cheap but I wouldn't trust them with important items. Communication was also poor. They said they'd send an email confirmation after I paid my deposit, but a week later, I'd received nothing and had to hound them for confirmation info. I left phone messages but no one every responded. They finally responded by email but it wasn't a very confidence-inspiring experience. read more

2.5.I guess you get what you pay for, this was the lowest quote we got, but I would not use hop moving again. The 2 people who came to move us were very nice, and respectful, but not the most experienced movers I think. It took longer than we expected (payment was by time) and to be honest, a lot of our furniture is now scuffed or damaged. It is not super nice furniture by any means, so not worth filing a claim on, but they put a pretty big dent/scratch on our headboard of the bed, and the corners of everything are banged up. We saw them drop several stacks of boxes (thankfully only of books/non fragile items). They were much more careful with the boxes marked fragile, so nothing got broken. All in all, our stuff made it from point a to point b so I guess it was fine. read more

Awesome and fantastic!! Only gave 4 stars as the move started a bit later than scheduled, so blame who ever scheduled not the actual movers that showed up. Two movers showed up after the move they had before me took 7 hours. It was a hot and humid day and they got right to work. Had me packed and unpacked in 3.5 hours. Nothing broken or wounded and boxes placed in rooms as labeled. Noah and his young Italian partner were professional, courteous and thorough. I would definitely hire them again. I used Hop Moving for a short move from South Boston to Dorchester when I had no one else available to help me move on the weekend that I had planned. Cody and Dom were the two movers on my job and I would certainly hire them again and refer them to anyone else - they had all of my stuff packed up in just an hour and ten minutes and unpacked and placed just as quickly. Even though there was a three hour minimum and I came slightly underneath the time, it was still worth the money - they were professional, polite, and efficient on a very hot day. I recently used a half-price coupon from Angie's List for 4 hours of moving help from HOP Moving. I had never heard of HOP before, and I have to say, our guy was amazing! We had two rooms of pre-packed boxes that we needed moved to our outside garage. Our mover, Santos, accomplished in 30 minutes what we thought would take him the whole time! So he asked what else we needed help with. He ended up moving 4 or 5 *heavy* pieces of furniture himself down a long flight of stairs -- never once saying that it was too much for one person or that it couldn't be done. Everything was moved perfectly, with zero scuffs or damage. Pretty impressive. We eventually ran out of things for him to move, and he finished with plenty of leftover time to spare. Santos was super friendly, and offered great advice about the remaining furniture that we'd be moving ourselves in a couple of days. He's the kind of guy that can look at a room and immediately knows the best way to pack and move everything inside. If you need a move done quickly and reliably by a true moving professional, ask for Santos at HOP! read more

We used Hop Moving twice, once for a local move and most recently for a long distance move. Each time, the movers were timely, professional and made both moves as smooth as possible. Santos and Eddie truly worked miracles for us. We rented a 20' truck that we drove to Florida ourselves. Although the U-Haul truck was advertised to move a 2-3 bedroom house, it was only able to accommodate our 2 bedroom apartment. They made sure every nook and cranny was utilized in that truck to ensure that all of our belongings would make it - and they did. On top of that, they worked tirelessly in 90+ degree heat going up and down 3 flights of stairs for 6 straight hours. We were so impressed with Eddie and Santos, and our whole experience! The whole process from start to finish was exceptional. We are very satisfied with all aspects of our experience from the quote, communication, pick up and delivery to the re-routing of our goods etc. We felt like our belongings were being taken care of personally and not just another sale in their income stats. Our belongings were all delivered, intact, no damage, clean, and had to have been handled carefully by how the boxes looked like they did when we packed them. We were very impressed and would use them again if we move in the future. We were very nervous about the whole moving process when we started looking for a moving company because of poor reviews and bad communication with other companies just in the quote stage, but Hop Moving exceeded our expectations from the start. Even though the delivery took a little longer than we first anticipated it worked out great for us because we moved twice in the time between our belongings arriving so it was much better that we didn't have to move everything twice. We were kept informed along the way of the progress of our delivery and they re-routed our delivery to the new address without any difficulty. read more

This really could not have been much worse. I was lured in by the favorable Yelp reviews and good price. We paid a deposit to secure our moving date and time. To get things started, they flat out did not show up on the scheduled date. They did not even call. I finally tracked someone down after they were over an hour late. After several promises to call me back, they admitted that they would not be coming and would have to reschedule. Obviously not ideal when you need to be out of the prior apartment. We moved the vast majority of the boxes ourselves leaving just the big furniture for them. They rebooked us for the following day. Some of our furniture was dinged up in the process and the door on our refrigerator was dented. The movers broke a window on the storm door at the new apartment while trying to get the sofa through. Stuff happens, nothing to get too upset about. When I pointed the damage out to the movers, they said they didn't notice breaking it and to call the management company. I sent pictures to the management company and followed up with a phone call to Alex in the main office. Alex denied responsibility because "I can't prove it wasn't already broken before the movers got there". I explained that my wife opened the unbroken door for the movers to let them in, and it was clearly broken after the couch went through. Alex said that was not enough to prove anything. Eventually, they did pay us their strangely calculated warranty amount ($0.60 for every pound the item weighs). The movers themselves were nice guys and did a very efficient job. I don't blame them for the broken glass, but owning up to it would have been appropriate. The company itself is pure garbage. Rude, unhelpful management. Despite receiving a paid deposit to hold the moving date, they blew it off and cancelled last minute without so much as a phone call. Avoid at all costs. read more

I used this company in the past with out issue. However this time around they unplugged the fridge and pushed back with out plugging it back in. This was the day before thanksgiving so we went away and came back to a horrid smell and 600.00 dollars worth of food gone bad. Called them and they said it was our fault because we went away and for all they know my daughter moved the fridge and unplugged it! Seriously? I used HOP movers for a move from Fitchburg to Brockton. I had two stops on the Fitchburg end (a storage unit and my apartment). By the time I got to the storage unit, they had completely loaded the contents into the truck, and were ready to go to my apartment! I couldn't believe the speed of these guys, and at the same time, the care they took with my items. They absolutely went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure my move went as smoothly and easily as possible. When we arrived at my destination location to find that the only elevator was out of service, so it would take twice as long to get my stuff in, they offered to get another guy to help (which would've cost a bit more, but still less than the extra time I would've paid for with only two movers). I said yes, and just then, as if by magic, the elevator was fixed. Huzzah! They unloaded in record time, too, with no damage at all, to anything. Anyway...I highly recommend HOP movers, and I would totally recommend them to my friends and family, and use them for my next move! read more

I was referred to Hop Moving by a friend who had used them before and was extremely happy that I did! I booked them last minute for an end of month move they had availability and arrived at the schedule time, Kareem and Cody were awesome! They worked quickly and carefully moving furniture out of a difficult third floor walk up without damaging anything and were extremely friendly while doing so. Kareem took time to explain everything and make sure that nothing was missed. I was very impressed with both Kareem and Cody, they were polite and efficient and made a very difficult day much less stressful by really going above and beyond. I highly recommend Hop to anyone moving they are affordable (best rate I could find and the estimate was very accurate), efficient, and an overall great moving experience! I have updated this review to reflect a phone call I just had with the staff at Hop Moving, in which they refunded me my deposit (equivalent to one hour moving fee), to make up for a less than ideal moving experience. Since my main problem was how much time (and thus money) this move took, the refund also resulted in an improvement of the company's rating). Here's what went well: 1. They arrived right at noon, even though I was given between noon and 3pm as the window in which they would arrive. 2. The 2 movers that I had been promised were polite, seemed knowledgeable and genuinely invested in making sure that everything that needed to be moved was moved carefully and safely. 3. Nothing was damaged or broken in the move. Problems that resulted in them not getting 5 stars: 1. The move from my 1.5 bedroom (1st fl) to a 1 bedroom (4th fl, elevator in building) three blocks away took over six hours, even with my partner doing some of the moving/lifting himself. This would not have been as much of a problem if we had been quoted something closer to 6 hours, but both the movers and the person who booked us quoted us 3 hours. It turns out that we were given 2 men plus a truck for what should have been a 3 man job. I have had moving companies advise me to use 3 movers on smaller jobs before, but I assumed that the capacity of this moving company might have been different. I was wrong. In the future I will request a minimum of 3 men per hour. Of course, moving can be a nightmare, so a longer than quoted time is within reason, but paying about twice our original estimate hurt our pockets deeply. Getting a refund on our deposit makes up for some of that though, hence this improved review. 2. In the middle of our move, one of our movers asked us if he could leave us to do another move. He said that he got a call from his boss asking him to do another move quickly in the middle of ours. We were baffled by this. He did not end up leaving our move though, and in my recent call with the Hop staff they said they didn't know anything about such an instruction. 3. Initially our movers were being pretty good about moving our stuff into the rooms we had designated they all go in. They had even packed up all the boxes into the truck first and the furniture/big pieces in last, presumably so that they could unload the furniture first and the boxes last - because this is the best way to fill the space. However, small items arrived in our apartment before the large ones, and as time dragged on things were dumped wherever they could find a free spot. I had to leave for an appointment later in the day (since I had not anticipated that the move would take more than twice the estimated time) and when I came back, it was barely possible to move in my new apartment. Apart from a narrow walkway through which we could squeeze, the space was a complete mess. I have never had movers leave a place in such disarray before. My partner was so desperate to end the process that he paid them without requiring that they leave us with a more acceptable arrangement. 4. Our movers disassembled a dining table to move it out of our old apartment and then they neither reassembled it in our new place, nor returned the screws and other hardware needed to reassemble our table to us. We are also missing a small desk piece since the move. read more

I contacted Hop Moving after a co-worker recommended them. This was my first time splurging on movers and I was really excited! I spoke with Alex and asked to book a date. He came back with the opening time and I said great and I thought everything was all set. I have him my number and explained our road could be tricky and asked if I needed to do anything else. I was so happy with the communication, price and friendliness! Alex never replied and I thought I had booked the movers. Moving day comes and the movers never show!! After several unanswered calls I finally reach someone. The customer service was a joke. They basically told me I was an idiot and never booked with them. When I tried to explain they just told me I was wrong. When I told them I needed to moved today due to my lease being up they were unhelpful at best. I then sent an email to the person I had been speaking with and am still waiting for a response. Not only was this the most stressful experience ever, they were rude and dismissive. I guess I'm off to rent a uhaul and move my things myself.... Very disappointed. read more
