Hoover's serves excellent comfort food. Personally, I don't think that Threadgills is even in the same league as Hoover's from a purely culinary perspective. The Jamaican Jerk Chicken at Hoover's is absolutely divine. Not only is the portion generous, but the tangy, spicy covering over the smoked meat is nothing short of unbelievable. Other standouts include the massive chicken fried chicken with white gravy and the surprisingly strong meatloaf. Nearly all of the side dishes at Hoover's are excellent, and the best one I have had is the jalapeno creamed spinach. The spinach is moderately spicy as a result of the jalapeno, and the cream is generous. Individuals who like dishes such as saag paneer probably would be quite impressed with Hoover's spinach. Outside of the actual food, Hoover's has a large adjacent parking lot and usually does not have a ridiculous wait time. They do have TVs here, but it's not a great place to watch a game. The prices are mind numbingly cheap for the quality and quantity of their portions. Many places in Austin have strong reputations. Hoover's, a favorite of mine since 1999, strongly deserves their rapidly growing fan base. read more

Best Sandwich in Austin!! I tell everyone to order the New Orleans Muffaletta and have the kitchen add the Feta/Cream Cheese olive spread to it...then prepare to swoon! The Bella Muffaletta is almost as good (add the olive salad to the Bella) I have had several other dishes and they have all been worth the trip...blackened catfish, jalapeno creamed spinach, fried okra etc...delish! Hoover's is a great place to get real home cooking...from sandwiches to meatloaf to barbecue. One of these days I will check out their breakfast...I have heard it is wonderful read more

Location is pretty easy to spot. It can actually appear quite suddenly if you are coming from I35. Upon entering the lot off the road, be sure to go in slowly and smoothly. The incline up to the lot is a bit steep so if you approach it too quickly, your vehicle may get scraped. There is plenty of parking next to the store and in front of the establishment. Entering the restaurant, there is a waiting area in case you arrive early. Once you've been taken to the table, you'll be treated to some exceptional service. It's pretty awesome. The servers are super nice. The food is pretty awesome as well. Has great comfort food! They have great items on the menu and have some additional items written on the chalkboard. The portions are pretty good in terms of the whole entree. The "main dish" may be a bit small, but with the sides, you should get all that you need. If not you can get the bigger options which costs a couple more dollars. Bathroom is pretty clean, no big complaints about it. Bonus: Apparently everything here is made from scratch! read more

Finding myself in Austin for about a week set me to search the web for forums dealing with chicken fried steak (I'm easily amused). An extraordinary number of votes were for Hoover's. I now know why. Suffice it to say the chicken fried steak was indeed the best I have ever encountered. Rather than checking out other restaurants, I returned to Hoover's several times over the course of the week (it's that good). Mashed potato's and jalapeno creamed spinach were my choice of the sides. Try to save room for sweet potato pie... it's unbelievable! read more

Once upon a time, I needed a huge Hoover Vacuum to suck up all the food in front of me in this cozy bungalow. My buddies and I usually came to Hoover's after a tiring day on the lake or river. We needed energy-rich nutrients to heal us for a prolonged night of partying. Fast forward to today. I feel like Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat came and sucked the soul right out of the cooking. Fatality. The portions are smaller. Most entrees are half the size of what I remembered. The fatty lush taste of most of the dishes are gone. I miss seeing meatloafs and chicken fried steaks the size of my face. I little part of me died. read more

I grew up in E. Texas and was raised on chicken fried steak, butter beans, mashed potatoes..cobbler...cinnamon biscuits. Reading over Hoover's menu brought back tons of memories of family dinners. I settled on a veggie plate. I'm not a huge meat eater and i love a good veggie plate. I opted for the jalapeno creamed spinach, mashed potatoes + gravy, green beans and a side salad. I had been told to order the spinach- and it did not disappoint. Creamy with just a hint of heat/spice from the jalapenos. The mashed potatoes (skins included) were also great. I even told my date, "Excuse me, I'm having a moment with my mashed potatoes". They were creamy, not over-whipped (yes, it can happen) and the gravy was fresh. The green beans were fresh and flavorful. The only side I wasn't particularly fond of was the side salad. It was good, but I wished I had just ordered a signature side instead. The side salad was 'ok'. My bf had the chicken fried steak (i sampled a bit) and it was probably the best chicken fried steak I've had in Austin. You can over batter a cfs and sometimes the batter can be too greasy....overcooked, etc. But, Hoover's was spot on. Just the right amount of crisp, a bit of seasoning and the gravy complemented the steak just right. Post dinner, we decided to try the blackberry cobbler a la mode. Cobbler was fantastic. Fresh blackberries married with a warm, gooey crust. I'm already plotting my next meal. Note! They offer $4 glasses of wine. I didn't sample any that night, but was delighted to see that they offered an inexpensive wine option- I remember seeing at least 4 different wines at $4 a glass. read more

Been coming to Hoover's since they opened in the 90s. If it's a Sunday, and I'm not cooking, or headed to my grandmother's table--we're coming here. Folks call it comfort food, however, this is pretty much all I ate growing up, so it's just regular food to me. My faves: chicken fried steak, the muffaletta, catfish, pork chops, mac n' cheese, jalapeno creamed spinach, okra & tomatoes, sweet tea, and peach cobbler. Can't go wrong with either of these. Always good to know that I can roll up over to Hoover's and get a taste of home cooking, when I don't feel like doing it myself. read more

This is a breakfast review!! Now I may be a bit biased, yet again, since I've been going here at least once a week for six months now. I was introduced to this place by my current fiance. We went once for dinner and that was great, but I was excited to find that they serve breakfast. I'm not sure if they do breakfast all week, but they damn sure do it on the weekends. The main reason we go to this place is my fiance's love of sweet taters. More so , the sweet potatoe pancakes. They have a variety of pancakes that you may have never heard of before. Sweet potatoe, ginger, and hoe cakes. Now hoe cakes....may sound a bit wrong, but they are sooo right. They taste like sweet cornbread, you don't even need any syrup (though they are great with honey!), just butter. The breakfast tacos are huge! Stuffed full with goodness. This place is a tradition for us and will be no matter where we live in Austin. read more

Chicken fried steak was average at best! However the menu has lots of choices. The place deserves another shot! Not sure I have found a really good chicken fried steak in all of Austin? I am very fond of Hoover's. It is where I like to take my out of town guests and when I have a hankering for some chicken friend chicken (they have the best gravy). I have also just realized what incredibly good breakfast food they have! Seriously. It's the kinda of breakfast that you should reserve for after a hard night of drinking, to soak up all the alcohol. It is a heavy breakfast, but very flavorful! Hoover's isn't the place to go if you are looking to eat healthy, although I do like their smaller lunch portions that come with 3 veggies which is nice. Their veggies are out of this world. Last night I tried the mustard greens and they weren't bitter as mustard greens usually are, they were sweet and flavored with bacon fat. YUM! I usually get their mac and cheese because it is so creamy. The con's would be that they are well-known and they are often packed which results in a longer wait then I usually like. but last night and it was calm and quiet and our server was just fabulous. She gave us advice when we needed it and was just generally a quick thoughtful server that had me in stitches. If you are looking for good southern cooking with great flavor, then Hoover's is the place! read more

It was ok. Splitting a plate cost extra and our server was rude in my opinion. He just didn't seem to want to be there. I think it's kind of your job to suck it up and pretend you're having the time of your life. Anyways, the good was good but average. Chicken fried steak was good to share (except the additional splitting cost). I wish they had a physical happy hour menu also instead of having the waiter throw all this information at us expecting us to recall what was just said. I also got dessert. Go with the cobbler. I got the banana pudding cheesecake. Very average and pricy for the quality. Oh I also wish I knew how much it was before hand. My mistake for not asking I suppose but I wouldn't complain if I got what I paid for. Whatever. Overall I thought splitting would be cheaper than getting my own but nope and food was average The end. read more

One of my favorite spots in Austin, a great place to grab some home cookin' Big fan of the meat + side plates. The jerk ribs/chicken are especially good, and you cant go wrong with any of the sides. Desserts are also really good read more

I just moved near this place and I am so glad! This place does home cooking right. So far I have tried the chicken fried chicken, chicken fried steak (don't judge me!), ham steak and the muffuletta. I preferred the entrees over the sandwich but everything was excellent. I think my favorite was the chicken fried steak. Their sides almost outshine their main dishes, though! Their potato salad is hands down my favorite ever, even including my family's cooking. Other good ones are the creamed spinach, butter beans (mmm, better than grandma's), okra and black eyed peas. It really seems like you can't go wrong here! It's a surprisingly great place for vegetarians too since you can order vegetable plates. I can also attest to their pecan pie, which I normally don't even like. I can't wait to try all their other deserts. Parking has not been an issue here before and the service has been fast and friendly. They also have a full bar with an exceptionally good frozen margarita which was a very pleasant surprise. The only downside here is the amount of calories that MUST be packed into all their food. If you're in the mood for something healthy, this isn't the place but it sure is a mighty fine place to splurge. This place blows Threadgill's out of the water. read more

It makes me sad to scratch Hoover's off my list, but the last 2 dining experiences there have been undeniably awful. One experience (about 3 weeks ago) involved my friend asking the waiter to take a plate back to the kitchen to be warmed up since the food was cold. I continued to eat my breakfast while we waited for his food to return. Almost 10 minutes later, the waiter returned without the food to tell us that there was some sort of argument (yes, argument) in the kitchen about our request to have the plate heated and that he would get it resolved and bring back the food. At that point, my friend told him not to bring the plate back because seriously, who wants food back from a kitchen after the cook has been made angry? The other experience happened this past Friday for dinner. The food seemed fine, but my dining partner and I both got a healthy dose of food poisoning. We shared the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer. I was having stomach pains before I even got home from the restaurant. My dining partner started to get sick about 30 minutes after me. I can't even think about Hoover's now without getting queasy. read more

Pros: Ridiculous sized portions for a great price. Seriously. 4 drinks, 2 entrees for $35. I was debating between the Elgin Sausage platter or Elgin Sausage sandwich. Glad I chose the sandwich because the platter would have been food overload. The sandwich came with 2 links on a toasted bun and one great heaping of whatever side you like (I chose potato salad). The platter would have come with 4 links and 2 sides, my belly says oh no thank you. Great happy hour from 3-7pm, margaritas are $3. The margarita is alright - I ordered the mango margarita and it wasn't that mango-ey. The service was wonderful (at least the time I went). The server was very attentive, cleared our plates, knowledgeable, always had a smile on his face. Cons: Not a place you want to take a first date necessarily. The joint was pretty empty when we walked in (although it filled up more when we were leaving). Obviously sparse interior decorating is the main aesthetic here. Perhaps more TV's could turn this place into a popular sports bar? That's the only con I can think of though. read more

hoovers had a very home feeling in their restaurant with very tasty food and delicious desserts. i ordedered the honey mustard chicken sandwich, and although i barely tasted the honey mustard part of it, it was still an amazing chicken sandwich with great fries. read more

Good, central location. Attentive service. The lemonade was delish, and the prices for food are very reasonable, especially considering the amount of food you get. I got the Chicken Fried Steak which was amazing! The steak was sizeable and not overpowered by breading. They also include two fairly large sides with each entree. Fried okra - YUMS. The mac n cheese was disappointing though. Good consistency but pretty bland. With a noticeable lack of Southern home-cooking restaurants in Austin, it's great to have experienced Hoover's. When I'm in need of some southern comfort, I'll be back! read more

Good southern homemade style food. Great menu selection. Good service. Lots of food, generally.

Hoover's cooking is home made comfort food with a bbq twist. They cook from scratch and have something for everyone. The set menu has salads, apps, queso and southern entrees like fried catfish, meatloaf and chicken fried chicken. They also have bbq plates and burgers. Check out the specials board for things like pecan crusted trout, special queso and burgers, fresh veggie specials of the day and and a list of desserts. Over a few visits, we've tried: grilled tuna salad - house dressing with a chunk of grilled tuna, delicious! meatloaf - meatloaf with veggies in it a and a plethora of hearty, spicy tomato sauce on top. come with three house sides veggie plate - home made butter beans were delish. The creamed spinach seemed to come from a can or frozen, it was not good. All the other veggies were definitely home made and yummy. blue cheese burger - nice grill flavor, good kolache dough type bun sausage wrap (kid's plate) with a side of mac 'n cheese - the house sausage won me over, my toddler enjoyed it, too! The mac was very cheesy and from scratch. read more

Hoover's is a must visit location when I am in Austin. I get the following, in this order by meal. Shrimp and Grits with a hoe cake. Muffuletta, save half and cook it up in the oven the next day. Chicken Wing Appetizers, half price at 5. read more

Austin you are fucking killing me! I have had some very good food at places like G'raj Majal, Congress Street cafe, and El Naranjo, but there are plenty of misses. Not wanting my last meal in Austin to be that shit bucket Annies we raced in a cab over to Hoovers for some "famous" home cookin. Well along with their famous food they have "famous margaritas". I decided against the margaritas when i saw a bartender carrying 4 bottles of cheep mix through the restaurant, but I digress. Chicken fried steak was tough, the breading had trouble staying glued to the meat as well. Gravy was bland, jalapeno creamed spinach tasted odd, I know what all the ingredients should taste like it just wasn't happening. Cowboy beans were good, but a bit sweet for my liking. I had the fried catfish, it was quite pedestrian fare, I enjoyed the colesaw the most, the butterbeans sucked. I am a huge fan of butterbeans even if you call em lima's! These may have been the worst I have ever had, way too much butt not enough bean. Perhaps if I chugged three or four of those slippery frozen "famous" margaritas that may have done the trick. read more

Hoovers has become one of my favorite spots for comfort food in Austin. They offer a large, diverse menu of soul/southern food and barbecue. Specials often include superb gumbo and shrimp etoufee. Fried catfish, chicken fried fill-in-the-blank, and bbq ribs are solid options, as are all of the barbecued meats. You can add ribs or sausage to any plate for a few bucks. There's a large selection of homemade sides (friend okrah, mac & cheese, green beans, etc. (the mac & cheese needs salt). They always have at least 4 homemeade cobblers and a couple of pies for dessert. Overall a solid 4-star restaurant on the east side. One exception I will make to the endorsement above: the burger is terrible. Smoked ground beef is just destined to be dry and this one is no exception. It's the only bad thing I've had here though so it didn't impact my rating. Enjoy! read more

This food is terrible. But furthermore, and after reading some of the positive reviews on here, I feel genuinely sad for whoever thinks this is good food. As I once heard somewhere, if you think this is good food, "there is nothing about you that I understand". Let me elaborate. We came here based on proximity, its openness o new years day, and some strongly positive reviews (amongst some bad ones, granted..). We were so disappointed. The mac and cheese was watery, gross, almost inedible. The chicken fried steak was super tough, the breading was soft, and the gravy was cold. The creamed spinach someone mentioned was amazing, was literally nasty. I took one bite as did my husband, and it took some courage to continue the meal quite frankly. Soggy, tepid, a slight kick at the end (from the jalapeno) but not delicious. My husband's pork ribs were dry, dry, dry. The famous biscuits...? I don't even know how to describe these. They were absolutely, frickin terrible. Who likes these biscuits? Who? Lastly, the cornbread was dry and hard. However I did ask for some more of these, because I was hungry and it was the least offensive of the items on the table. Don't go here. You've been warned. read more

TL;DR Mac and cheese bad, most everything else really good So I was really excited to come here after one of my friends ranted and raved about their "soul food," "down home southern cooking," "comfort food".... ad nauseam. He also said the margaritas were great. Okay... sold! I will say he built up a huge expectation in my mind but I guess I didn't consider that he's originally from Idaho; this food would've made my southern Gramaw blush. You should literally never, EVER have to season your collard greens! Oh the blasphemy! That having been said, however, is that the food is pretty good... once you put salt and hot sauce on it. Put some pepper vinegar on them collard greens and they were 33.3% as good as mom's. The fried catfish was pretty good but there was something a little off about the batter (read: bland). The mashed potatoes and gravy were GREAT. No added salt needed. Chips and queso were fair to middlin but I was hungry, so I ate them all. Margs were not good; I switched to an EastCider after I drank the super weak cocktail. Here's the kicker: I ordered mac and cheese as one of my sides and my friend chimes in "NO, GIRL... do NOT get that, it's terrible!" And I was just kinda like, yeah yeah ok, you're talking to the girl that likes school cafeteria rectangle-cut pizza and never throws food away or sends it back. You know Mac n cheese is one of those things, like sex: even if it's really bad, it's still good. As it turns out, she was right and I was WRONG! I had to send it back! It was like gritty, mushy elbow noodles in pasty water, ugh! So I told my server, who was great, to please take that nonsense back to the kitchen and pick her favourite side and bring me that. She chose the cucumber salad which was great. My party of three finished off by splitting a chocolate bread pudding a la mode and it was HUGE and to die for. We couldn't finish it it was so big. Our server I don't think ever said her name but my receipt said Capricia, and she was amazing. I felt comfortable and well taken care of. So, the long and short of it... if you are a transplant with a "California palate" (my friend used that phrase and I thought it was funny), then you'll probably really like the food. If you're from the south, be prepared to use hot sauce. Also there's plenty of parking which is a breath of fresh air. Will be back! read more

Oh Hoover's how you have forsaken me.... We were down east Saturday and I talked my Spouse into a southern style brunch. I wish he would have talked me out of it this time..... We were promptly seated in the booth by the kitchen, where we were inundated with the crashing of dishes into the wash cart that was located about 10 feet from me the whole time we were there! I SWEAR I was living an episode of Kitchen Nightmares as one older lady came out of the kitchen and came within an inch of hitting me in my temple with her tray. No response was given even after I exclaimed, "Wow, That almost hit me!" It took about 34 minutes from ordering to receiving our food and we waited and waited, as we looked around to watch the rest of the waitstaff ignore anyone that wasn't at their tables. I saw several people walk in, and wait to be seated as the waitstaff ignored them as they chatted amongst themselves and walked back to the bar and waited for the older lady with the pony tail to seat them, which she barely did. She was too busy scrubbing the menus in an out of the way location. We begged for a refill of tea and our bill about 30 minutes after our food was delivered, and when we were filling out our ticket and tip, another careless waiter came around the danger corner where I was sitting and dropped a basket of cornbread on my head and KEPT GOING AFTER LOOKING AT ME WITH HIS CUSTOMER'S ORDER SITTING ON MY HEAD! He left the clean up and apology to the wait staff that was standing around doing nothing. The offending waiter then came back to me and apologized after delivering his tray, because, you know, I am not his customer, and NEVER even offered to bring over a Manager. I brushed the cornbread off my head and we are DONE & DONE with Hoover's! read more

I have been an avid patron of Hoover's for over a year since moving into the cherrywood area. There have been times where the food is amazing and the service matched. However, this past couple months the service has been slowly declining. I went to have lunch yesterday and was greated and sat at a table quickly with my husband. We waited 15 minutes for a server to come by the table before leaving. Three servers walked past us and didn't even ask to take our drink order. We walked out after 2 tables were sat after us and and their orders taken. It was slow after the main lunch crowd had already left on a Friday afternoon. I will not be back. read more

My family is taking a mini vacay from San Antonio, and Hoover's was on the recommended list from friends. Sadly, we were not impressed. I will say though, the staff seemed overwhelmed and apologized multiple times for the confusion and the length of time to receive our items. My husband had to go to the truck to retrieve our wipes. The high chairs were absolutely disgusting. My fried chicken was fresh and tasty. I asked multiple times for a leg and wing no thigh and still got a thigh (whatever). The greens were cold and tasted clearly like sugar. I didn't like the Mac and cheese, but both my babies ate some. My husband had the fish. It wasn't great. His fries tasted extremely oily. I wish I would have went with my gut and requested my $65 back, but we went into the evening focused on the experience so it was worth it seeing our friends. read more

I think the number of reviews speaks for itself, but this place is A-OK. My girlfriend took me here for our weekly date night, and I was surprised that she had picked out a place that seemed so obscure and out of the way. Honestly, it looked quite sketchy. However, once inside the doors, we're greeted with a nice, homey Southern atmosphere. Our waitress seats us, not at the table we wanted, but after we asked for a different table, she was very quick to oblige. We decided on ordering the Chicken Fried Steak with Potato Salad, Cowboy Beans, and Fried Okra and the Catfish Po-Boy with Macaroni and Cheese. Catfish Po-Boy: - Very sizable piece of almost fresh catfish filet, breaded very well. - They give you a slaw with it that's pretty good, but it doesn't stay on the bun. - Overall, nothing special. Chicken Fried Steak: - Very well cooked, breading not too thick. - Gravy not as thick or flavorful as I like, but altogether not bad. - Overall, pretty good, but not OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD good. Macaroni and Cheese: - My girlfriend and I were very disappointed with this dish. - Seemed like boxed macaroni with a cheese sauce that was very... generic. No distinct flavor in it at all. Fried Okra: - VERY GOOD BREADING. NOT TOO THICK! - Okra was definitely fresh. - This was an EXCELLENT side. Highly recommend for the okra lovers! Potato Salad: - Honestly, nothing special, BUT it was fairly good quality for the money. - I'm not a potato salad snob, so this was pretty acceptable to me. - I would get this again! Cowboy Beans: - Saving the best for last. DEFINITELY the best side I had tonight. - Waitress said it was barbecue style beans cooked in rib meat. It had a very good amount of maple sugar in there, making it a veryyyyyy good bowl of barbecue beans. - I would eat this dish over and over and over again if I could! All in all, a pleasant experience this evening at Hoovers. My girlfriend and I decided that this probably does not make our list of places to re-visit, but we weren't displeased with our experience at all. The sides are hit or miss, but the entrees are fairly straightforward. read more

Preface, my last meal would be a Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and white gravy. So needless to say I love me some soul food. The food here at Hoover's is quiet good- although I should only review the Chicken Fried Chicken/Steak because that's all I ever order there- when in Rome... I did try bites of food from the others at the table and the New Orelands Muffaletta Sandwich- and it was quiet flavorful. And OMG the Lemonade- hands down best I ever had, so good I took my leftover home. I also want to make a note about our waitress who was awesome. I love it when they hear flatware drop to the floor they automatically bring you another. I would deduct one star for the bread, but I can't, everything else was too good. read more

Let me start by saying you will get HUGE portions- so if you're on any kind of diet, make sure you have a game plan before giving in, errr... going in. That being said, the most splendid drink you can order is the lemonade. You can't go wrong with the mac and cheese, but I do have a soft spot for the jalepeno creamed spinach and green beans and broccoli and... well... just about every side! You can't go wrong with any of them, to be honest. Of course the chicken fried steak at Hoover's is a legend in and of itself and is fabulously delicious. Again, it is about the size of a house and suuuper delicious!!! However, don't be afraid of trying some of the stuff from the smoker, as well. I've had the jerk chicken and that was amazingly yummy. This is definitely a place to go for dinner and take home leftovers to bring to work the next day to make your coworkers jealous. You will definitely be the envy of the lunchroom and will have possibly even more food than you can eat the 2nd time around, too (but you don't need to tell your coworkers that.. keep that jalepeno cornbread for yourself, now). You will definitely find excellent southern hospitality from the servers and you will enjoy every minute in the laid-back environment. read more

We split the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, fried okra, and macaroni and cheese. The other person in our party ordered a vegetable plate with fried okra, squash, and cheese grits. I'll start out with the pros - the fried okra was very good. We all liked it. We liked the ambiance and the noise level...not too loud, but busy. Now the cons: 2 of the three items on the vegetable plate were incorrect. The macaroni was bland and exceptionally mushy, but we spiced it up with the habanero sauce at the table. The chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes were okay at best-- kind of devoid of any flavor or seasoning. The beans that came mistakenly in lieu of squash were flat out disgusting-- overcooked and gross. The famed breadbasked consisted of two tiny pieces of hard, dry cornbread and two hockey-puck like biscuit pellets. I hesitate to even call them biscuits or rolls. In sum: not worth it. I can't understand the good ratings on yelp. read more

I do not like the Manor Road location. Granted I've only been there once, but they gave me no reason to want to come back. The service was extremely slow (even taking in to consideration that we were there during peak hours) and my food was cold and very bland. Thankfully there is another AWESOME location at Anderson Mill Rd & 183. I go there maybe once every couple of months. They have the best side dishes. And everything is fresh and made from scratch. We went there for breakfast today. It was my first time (for breakfast) and I will definitely be back! Of course you will have to order dessert too! Get the peach cobbler or chocolate cream pie... yum! (I usually have to get it to go because the dinner portions are HUGE.) Therefore not a good place to go if you are watching your weight! read more

OMG, this has to be some of the best southern cooking I have experienced. It reminds me of growing up and the meals my Father used to cook 30 years ago (Thank God he cooked, Mom was not very good at it.) I had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes (with skins), fried okra, and a side of mustard greens. The mustard greens were some of my favorite with a huge piece of pork cooked in for extra flavor. This was topped with a dessert of ice box chocolate cream pie. Incredible! I read great reviews and it's often packed for dinner, but I was disappointed. I asked the waitress if I should get the pork ribs or fried pork chop for my first meal their and she said pork chop, so I got that. It was fine, nothing special, could have been juicier, nice breading, no sauce or gravy though (which I've never seen before). For sides I got the creamed jalapeno spinach (nice and spicy, but very watery), potato salad (which was great!), and macaroni and cheese (it was bland and reminded me of Kraft Mac 'N Cheese). The bread was also subpar. read more

How is this place still in business ? Food is consistently sub-par. Nothing tastes "homemade". Everything tastes like it was previously frozen and is under seasoned . I have been here 3+ times because I really do want to Hoover's a chance. Food is overpriced, margaritas are overpriced. Everything is just so bland . No, their food is not "bad" but it is not anything I would ever remember. IHOP and Denny's are both better, if that gives you a quality idea.
