The food can be hit or miss, sometimes the best fried pork chops or chicken fried steak sometimes a soggy mess. I got the fried pork chops for takeout a week or so ago and they were pretty solid, side of Mac was really bad but I think it was just a bad day, yams were pretty good. For good down home country cooking there's not to much better in Austin, although I think that's more of a testament to the lack of good soul food in Austin read more

Hoover's has the best baked beans in Austin. They call them cowboy beans and they are spiked with brisket. Lots of it. We also love the meatloaf and the pork ribs. read more

It was DELICIOUS! Ordered the fried catfish with potato salad, Jamaican rice, and green beans. For some reason I forgot that Jamaican rice and dirty rice are two very different things but it was a nice surprise. The potato salad was my FAV! It was the perfect mixture of sauces and chunky potatoes. Greens beans were cooked perfectly. Mr. Hoover is a sweet older gentleman. I had the pleasure of having him help me. I think the FOH staff seemed a little newer to their positions as Mr.Hoover was answering their questions in between helping me but they were all working hard on their tasks. read more

Fantastic, Texas southern comfort meets Cajun meets Tex-mex meets farm-to-table food in an unpretentious busy location. My boyfriend and I went for an early Sunday brunch and had no problem getting a table. We both opted for brunch; I had the chicken fried chicken with etoufee and he had the chicken and waffles. Both our meals were huge, so filling, and very well done. My chicken was juicy, crispy, and warm, the biscuit was good, and the etoufee sauce was truly worthy of Cajun status. I want skeptical that I would enjoy the etoufee sauce but it was as good, if not better, than many places I've had in Nola. My boyfriend ate his entire chicken and waffle platter, which was huge. He said the chicken was amazing and the batter of the waffle was crispy and very flavorful. We would definitely come back. The portions were huge, the waitstaff was friendly and so attentive, and the food was authentic and delicious. Great place to eat! read more

As usual, the food at hoovers is pretty good, but why not seat a party of 3 when 2 are standing right there ? I met 2 buddies for lunch and we drove over 20 minutes on our lunch hr to get there. The host didn't want to seat 2 of us so I said fine, we'll take a table for 2. He could have screwed us and gave us a 2 top, but he didn't (I did see a party of 2 sitting at a 6 top table). On top of that, I had called my order in and it was waiting for me. We finally got seated and my "eat there" order was bagged up to go (when I specifically said I would eat it there, you know to save precious time). I understand not seating larger parties when only a few arrive, but really, 2 out of 3 ?? Bottom line, maybe not the best place to go if you're in a rush on your lunch hour read more

Everything sucked The service was poor and slow and the food was bland even the fried chicken needed salt. The side salad is tiny and the "cornbread basket" is a pathetic joke it tastes like styrofoam read more

Haven't been to that nice Christian owner's restaurant in some time. Glad I had time to go. Service was good, they were eager to attend to a patron's needs. Tables were cleaned promptly. The food was really good. Loved the jalapeno cornbread muffins. The sweet tea was not overly sweet. Interesting artwork and pictures on the walls. I remember that Hoover was with the Austin iconic, 'Nighthawk Restaurant.' He was there visiting with patrons. read more

Whenever I'm in the need of some southern comfort food this the place for me..I have yet to be disappointed with any order of food..They also have a small selection of wine and a mini bar...My go to dishes are the Southern Fried Pork chops with mash potatoes and mustard greens or on Tuesdays the chopped steak lunch special.. read more

The chicken fried steak was good- but everything else was very mediocre. I don't know how they managed to mess up mashed potatoes, but they did. I hate when a restaurant doesn't have tasty sides! Typically side dishes are basic, so these should be mastered. I'd go back one more time to see if my experience was a fluke. read more

I enjoyed my experience here. I had the meatloaf, which was great... my only complaint is... Just like my granny, they use sugar in their savory dishes. The tomatoes on top of my meat loaf were a bit too sweet for me... I also had the greens and they were sweet as well. My sister had the veggie plate, massive portions.... the lima beans were very rich and tasty.... all in all, I would recommend it! read more

I went to Hoover's with very high expectations mainly because there are so many of you guys with 4/5 stars. When I first stepped into Hoover's, I thought, "this place feels like how Hoover's should be." What does that mean? it means it felt right. I ordered the meatloaf, which was very good. Although, I was disappointed at the small portion! The good part is that it wasn't false advertisement because it looked EXACTLY like it was pictured on their website. Kudos to Hoover's. My girlfriend got the sausages and was supplied with FOUR sausages. It was almost twice the meat I had with my meatloaf... again *sad about the lack of meat I received*. The sides come in large portions... YES. The mashed taters (what's taters precious? you know po-ta-toes. Boil 'em, mash 'em, put 'em in a stew!) were mmm. That and fried okra..... *drools* The blackberry cobbler was also sooo soo good. Didn't get the ice cream as recommended by the server (cuz I'm fat), which probably would've made it even better. All in all, I'll probably go back again. Overall, good southern cookin'. read more

10/10 nice atmosphere, food was absolutely delicious, definitely recommend the blackberry cobbler

This is for Hoover's Thanksgiving service only. I'll do a regular one at some point, but I want to bat this one out while I'm still thinking about it. They opened at 11am, and the four of us got the last table at 11:25 before the waiting list began. I did see a couple leave with their doggy-box at 11:35, which seemed pretty fast. Hoover's had a prix fixe Thanksgiving Day menu, with a choice of one entrée and two sides for $16. I tried to bribe our waiter to score some fried okra which wasn't listed, but he couldn't do it. I understand the turkey, ham, pork roast and vegetarian portabella as entrées, but I'm mildly curious how many people went for the jerked chicken or smoked sirloin as their Thanksgiving choice. So in a nutshell: The good: Turkey, Caribbean fruit salad, mustard greens. The okay: Mashed potatoes, white gravy, candied yams, cornbread dressing. The forgettable: Green beans, bread basket, cranberry sauce. It started to become slightly claustrophobic when they began joining tables for large families on either side of us, so we had our desserts packed to go, and I haven't done any of them yet. Incidentally, they do sweet potato pie here instead of pumpkin. I'm not big on judging a place by their holiday prix fixe fare: If it's great, it's a bonus, but I'll cut slack for a slammed kitchen essentially pushing out mass amounts of institutional food for a festive crowd. No excuses tomorrow, though. I denote Thanksgiving restaurants by those using waitstaff or those doing a buffet service. Hoover's does waitstaff, and our waiter was a good guy. He did get bogged down toward the end cashing out other tables, but no big deal. All in all, a pleasant experience. Four dinners, four desserts, no booze = $100. One warning: To expedite table changes, two incredibly fast buspeople used big sheets of brown industrial paper as tablecloths. Although it looked solid sticking out three inches over the table edges, it wasn't. If you moved stuff around, you had to make sure there was some table underneath the paper. read more

The Dude abides...or at least resides...at Hoover's Cooking! One fine summer's evening, we were finally hungry after spending the morning competitively downing breakfast tacos (Adam Richman = muse), so we headed straight to Hoover's Cooking for some famed Southern Comfort. Our waiter bore a stunning resemblance in both manner and appearance to Jeff Bridges as "The Dude", which was a fantastic side bonus to the delicious comfort food! With some excellent guidance from The Dude, we ordered wisely: Bread Basket: free with your meal, the bread basket was a thing of beauty with sweet potato biscuits and cubes of jalapeno corn bread and ample butter Entrees: 1. Chicken Fried Steak ($11.99) - you can't come to the great state of Texas without trying this dish. Hoover's version had light crispy breading with well seasoned gravy. However, the pounded steak varied widely in thickness throughout, so some pieces had perfect breading and gravy to steak ratio and other pieces were lacking. There were perfect bites in there, with a large standard deviation 2. Fried Catfish ($11.49) - it's really unfair to judge the catfish after a recent trip to the Big Easy. Hoover's version was good, cornmeal crusted and served in a generous pile. I'll leave it at that Sides: served in large bowls, we got 2 free sides with each entrée and they were mostly great 1. Cowboy Beans - The Dude highly recommended this side, and I could see why. This ain't your ordinary bowl o' baked beans. No siree! These featured a ridiculously generous portion of pulled pork all up in the beans. It had so much pulled pork, it could have easily been an entrée! The Dude mentioned that he sometimes orders the veggie plate and gets Cowboy Beans for all 4 options. He eats 2 and takes the other two home to convert his friends over to Hoover's fine eating! Amazing, a pulled pork missionary feeding the masses, one heaping bowl of delicious pulled pork and beans at a time 2. Macaroni and Cheese - when I asked how the mac and cheese was, The Dude went to the bar to get a trophy that Hoover's won for Mac and Cheese. Now I'm a Southern Baked (with multiple cheese and eggs) kind of Mac and Cheese fan, so while the mac was tasty, I won't be handing over any trophies, but if you're into the saucier mac, you'll like this version a lot 3. Seasoned Green Beans - pretty classic, self explanatory green beans 4. Garlic and Cheese Grits - again, pretty unfair to compare the grits after our recent visit to Charleston. The garlic flavor was subtle to the point of being undetectable, but there was some cheesy flavor. We added some salt and butter to this to perk it up Desserts: 1. Blackberry Cobbler ($3.95) - The Dude's favorite cobbler, and it was easy to see why. The crust was wonderful and the blackberries were juicy and bursting with tart, sweet flavor 2. Pecan Pie ($3.95) - very solid pecan pie with a thick crust of pecans on top of the corn syrup filler PARTING THOUGHT: Hoover's was well worth a stop during our brief trip to Austin. It's a real down home eatery! Just be careful of the margaritas...the unofficial limit is 2 per customer! read more

Cowboy beans. That's all you need to know. You probably don't even need an entree if you order the BIG bowl of cowboy beans. There's BBQ brisket and sauce mixed in with the beans. Sooooo delish! I was scraping the bottom of the bowl to get it all! It's really a meal all it's own! But I did order sausage and ribs as well. Ribs I finished easily. The Elgin sausage went home with me. Both smokey selections were good. Maybe not Lockhart good, but tasty. Also, the large side of potato salad was thick and creamy. Bar had no wait during lunch. Good excuse to get a couple of Shiners. Staff was friendly and helpful throughout the restaurant! Looking forward to returning to Hoover's. I saw a tray with a catfish po boy and a big pile of fries that I want to devour - with a side of cowboy beans of course! read more

I recently tried Hoover's Cooking on my last visit from Austin. You can't beat the opportunity for comfort food. We made our appearance on a Sunday evening and thought where was everyone? Oh yes, it was Super Bowl Sunday which garnered a moderate crowd but still with great service. That evening, we ordered the Catfish Po Boy and the Chicken Fried Chicken Breast. The po boy came with 1 side, which I chose mackie cheese. This sandwich is huge, but deliciously devoured with its slaw on top. With the chicken, you were given 2 sides and they were the mackie cheese and mash potatoes. The chicken has a hearthy amount of gravy poured on top making it true comfort food. Be forewarned the portions here are huge and delicious. Wear loose clothing when here. For drinks, we each order the homemade lemonade. The lemonade is freshly squeezed and is called the Tall Texas Quencher. It's served in a small pitcher and doubles as the huge 32 oz glass to drink from and/or sip using a straw. I had a craving for soul food served with house-warming hospitality. I got both dining here. If you want to go on a diet, start the next day. You might miss out on the great comfort food at Hoover's Cooking. read more

Since my man is from the south, whenever we are in a new town, we start our Quest For The Best Fried Chicken In Town. We thought we would find it here, but ... what tha? As Donna R. mentioned below, I was a little put off that they didn't serve it. Even given that, I really like Hoover's. The food is really, really heavy, but well done southern comfort food. The meat is too heavy for me, so what we've done is order a plate with meat and then another plate with just sides. Their sides are really tasty. My favorites are the sweet potatos (with chunks of brown sugar on top! swimming in butter!), jalapeno creamed spinach and roasted garlic new potatoes. Their fried pork chop and chicken fried steak are good, but nothing memorable. However, their meatloaf has a really great sauce. Oh! A couple of weeks ago, they had a special pie: buttermilk. I don't know if you guys have ever had that, but the two southern boys I was with hadn't. The flavor reminded me of flan: eggy and caramelized sugar. It was served cold. I liked it a lot, but I could have used a glass of milk with it. Definitely try it if they have it that day. read more

Now this place was a seriously good find. I've been living in Austin for about nine months now and the only real southern cuisine I've had is the BBQ. I had a serious craving for friend chicken and searched Yelp and found this place. It's delicious! First, let me tell you about the macaroni and cheese. If you're like me and you grew up with the box stuff, you'll be blown away by how much better their Mac tastes. Its served piping hot and delicious. Their fried chicken was tasty and honestly didn't sit heavy in my stomach (despite the other reviews on here). The cole slaw was not very good, but honestly, I didn't come for the cole slaw. Oh, and I thought it was pretty funny that they called it chicken fried chicken. As opposed to tempura fried chicken? Who knows. If you need some serious soul food, this place hits the spot like Tell's arrow through the apple. read more

This is place serves terrible food! Don't eat there. Pies are tasteless and food in general doesn't taste good at all.

I have an unhealthy obsession with sweet potatoes. I once attempted to make a sweet potato cookie; it was less than stellar, but I ate the entire batch anyway. Maybe I have an unhealthy obsession with eating vast quantities of things... Anyway, they have sweet potato pancakes here that are heavenly. You can order one at a time, but I recommend getting three at a time. Oh wait, I think that's my unhealthy side kicking in... but I promise, they're totally worth it! read more

Solid Southern cooking. Having grown up in Louisiana, I have to say their catfish po'boy was pretty close to the ones served in Baton Rouge and NO. The fried catfish was well seasoned and crispy and the bread was fresh. Only complaint is that the lettuce seemed over several days old. Prices are reasonable with most of the dishes come with one/two side(s) for around ten dollars total. The restaurant itself seems to seat no more than 50 people max. However, my group came around 1 PM for lunch on a Sunday and there was still some space in their private room area. Next time, I may need to try their meatloaf and muffuletta as I heard these were good as well. read more

Rivers. Of. Shit. As someone who grew up eating the supposed "home-cooked" food they bring out, it's not very good, first of all. Secondly, the wait staff could be more condescending and rude when serving you, but at that point just fucking bring in some crazies from the street. At least you'll get a tax break, maybe. But I guess some people love going to a place that's all hype and getting spit on in the process. And lastly, parking? Good fucking luck, buddy. The location is in a strip next to TMEX, a copy place. At least they have a cool sign, assholes. If you want better "homestyle" food, sans the douche bag wait staff and the holier than thou image problem, go to Threadgill's. read more

This place is such comfort food for me. So much fried foods and the sides are absolutely tasty. My brother introduced me to Hoover's as soon as I entered the city of Austin and boy am I thankful. What I love about this place? Anything fried on the menu is usually done to perfection. Pork chops, Chicken Fried Steak, Fried Catfish, you just can't go wrong with any of those choices as entrees. They also bring a fresh basket of cornbread and sweet bread. The portions are HUGE, I always leave with a to-go box so you're basically paying for 2 meals. This meatloaf is nothing like yo mamas', it's actually good. The sides are great. Mashed Potatos/Macaroni Cheese done the right way. Spinach and Beans are nothing to go crazy about. Stuff that's not so great? The service is usually pretty subpar. They're just not very nice, which is what you WOULD expect. I will say that Hoovers does need some more consistency in the quality of food they bring. On one occasion, they gave us stale bread and soggy salads. Quality control people. I wouldn't eat BBQ here either. It just doesn't hit the spot like the way the other food items do. I definitely recommend hitting this place up for some fried goodness. Just pray you don't hit this place on an off-day. read more

Normally, I do love me some Hoover's. Their meatloaf rocks my world and their chicken fried steak is bigger than my husband's head--he's got one gargantuan cranium! (Because your brain is so big, honey!) I just felt compelled to write about my Thanksgiving experience in particular. No, I do not cook on Thanksgiving. No, I do not like turkey on Thanksgiving. My family eats Mexican food on this occasion. Why be normal? But my husband likes his Thanksgiving meal on the traditional side, so our deal is I don't cook and he gets turkey. But I digress. I realize it's Thanksgiving and the options are such that the restaurants who do open their doors are dealing with pure, unadulterated restaurant hell (except for the man/woman who collects the receipts at the end of the day). But if you ARE gonna open your doors, you could be nicer about it. We took our food to go (no reservations + long lines + toddler = a lethal combination), so it was kind of like "jacks, no backs" in terms of no opportunity to correct the situation if something was wrong. And let me tell you, it was MOSTLY wrong: 1. My pork tenderloin was mostly gross, disgusting fat. 2. My green beans were canned. 3. My cornbread dressing was missing. 4. My roll was missing. 5. My sweet potatoes had a big stem-thingie right on top (so they can't say they didn't see it) I did get a taste of my husband's cornbread dressing and folks, that was TO DIE FOR. I could've eaten a plate of that alone. But alas, I did not actually receive any, so there wasn't a single redeeming quality to my meal. If you have time to wait for a table on a regular night when the staff isn't as overwhelmed, it's a great place for comfort food. The pitcher-sized lemonade is so refreshing I'm overcome with desire for it as I type. read more

Excuse me, but I am WILD about this place. My father took me here for the first time on my birthday of last year and I enjoyed a whippersnippin' plate of chicken and waffles. They get their coffee from Texas Coffee Traders, so I was in heaven, along with my heaping mounds of fried food. The next time I came here was for a professional organization holiday party. They reserved a series of long tables for us in a secluded part of the restaurant, and we dined in delight! I was able to taste a sampling of appetizers, their signature chicken fried steak, and their one of a kind Blackberry cobbler for dessert. Oh my goodness. I came back to work, after my lunch break so freaking satisfied, and with my belly full. My coworkers (or should I say colleagues) were jealous of my humble bragging that I dined at Hoovers. *Mission accomplished.* The last time I entered this locale was when a couple of friends were in town for their fake birthday. We started brunch right with chicken fried chicken and cheese and queso. And tons and tons of coffee! Such wonderment. Unfortunately, the waitress during this day had a bout of slow service. (she forgot that we had ordered chips and queso all together, and did not offer to discount or mark off the tab) I understand the brunch hours on Sundays are laboriously busy, but I was a bit disappointed that a menu item had been forgotten and my table was not given appropriate customer service. None the less, I will always remain faithful to Hoover's Cooking. It's simply a staple I cannot live without after all. See you later, Alligators! read more

This is good, authentic Southern cooking the way it was meant to be eaten. Holy crap that was some great meatloaf!!! And the fried chicken my wife Leigh ordered was great as well. Got the mashed potatoes and mac-n-cheese as sides, along with their pitcher sized order of lemonade to wash it all down. Yet another reason I'm glad I live on the East Side! read more

I hate this place! I feel like I am in a ghetto cafeteria and I felt so gross after I ate here. The food wasn't terrible- it's not really my cup of tea, but if you like comfort food then you'll enjoy it. But the atmosphere is just terrible. Cramped seating, haphazard service, unnecessarily loud patrons, and just in general stodgy food. I am not a fan. But putting this over the edge into for sure 1-star territory is the fact that I witnessed an employee use the restroom and NOT wash her hands. Oh haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaale no. read more

Hoover's was my unofficial welcoming party when I moved to Austin back in the day: the first two years I was here, it was the Hoover's Thanksgiving Day meal that tided me over, and it's the memory of those experiences that I reflect upon each time I stop in nowadays. The Hoover's formula is well known around here: take one classically trained chef with a soft spot for comfort and/or soul food, keep things fresh, the portions hearty, the patrons leaving with that glassy-eyed full-bellied look. Rinse. Repeat. As with most fan favorites, there are times when it's tough to get in here, but by and large, if you work it just right to beat the rush, you'll be seated and knee deep in gravy before you can say 'whoa, no more pie. Thanks.' read more

Hoover's is good for your soul(food), but maybe not your heart. In my mind I file Hoover's under a restaurant category that I refer to as "big meat." These are the places you go when you want to eat meat like a caveman, but without all the trouble of clubbing it yourself. These are the places where vegetables are accompaniments to the Main Event ... Meat. These are the places you go where you throw eating healthy and heart attack prevention, not to the wind, but under the table while you read the menu and pick out your delicious Meat Treat. My latest Hoover's obsession is a slab of grilled meatloaf enrobed in a spicy tomato sauce and kept company by some mashed potatoes and gravy. I only mention the potatoes because they are the vegetable world's version of meat. When I'm eating a little bit "lighter" at Hoovers, if one can imagine doing such a thing, I go for the Catfish Po'boy where the genius of the sandwich is in the toasted bun and the "slaw" made of lettuce and mayonnaise. This I like to match with some macaroni and cheese because, well, the truth is I can never finish my whole meal and the macaroni and cheese reheats exceptionally well. You see, I always go in with a plan of attack - I decide in advance whether I'm going to have dessert. Either way, I know that there will be a to-go box in my hands when I leave. The question is how much and what ... if I know I'm going to eat dessert, I try to pick sides that behave well on the reheat and then I focus my attention on the meat. I have eaten many a' meal at Hoover's and while the is much to love, there are a few things I might like to change. First, it can be downright cold and loud in there ... I don't know if it's the way the space is laid-out, but it's not cozy ... the counterpoint here is that because the space is so open, they have lots of ability to seat large groups. My second concern is that the white butcher paper they put across the tables creates an illusion of one table. This would not be so bad except I have lost count of how many drinks have been spilled at my table and others because they were accidentally placed on the well-concealed divide. Third, and most important, I'm going to have to agree that it can be hit or miss, especially with barbeque which has arrived at the table in a rather dry and unappealing state on more than one occasion. Similarly, the sweet potato biscuits can be divine ... or very recently reheated and therefore a little dry and shriveled - more like a raisin and less like a biscuit. Last - and most important - why oh why do some of the vegetables have so much sugar? I'm from the South (Virginia to be exact) not the Southwest (Texas) and I can understand cooking vegetables with all manner of pork products, but I am not a fan of adding sugar to things like mustard greens. If anything, give me some vinegar or some red pepper, but leave the sugar for the cobblers! While I am lodging complaints dear Hoover's, I am only doing so because I love you. In spite of my constructive criticism my inner caveman and I will be back for more of that meatloaf soon. read more

Whenever I'm thinking about going to this place with a friend or group of people here's how the conversation generally goes: Person 1: Hey, I'm kind of hungry.. what's there to eat that's nearby (standing somewhere near campus or downtown). Person 2: Well we could go to -insert random mediocre restaurant- Me: Hey, I've got an idea... How about we go to Hoover's and make some bad decisions? Person 2: dear god.... Person 1: Let's do this. We then end up at hoovers, eating way too much delicious food (you can't skip out on cobbler a la mode!) and feeling terrible afterward from overeating. This is comfort food in every sense. You definitely don't eat here because it's healthy, you eat here because it's tasty happiness that makes you feel good, right before making you feel like you're about to explode. I think a key to success here may be to order a normal serving, take -half- of it and put it immediately into a "to go" container, then proceed with your meal. Unfortunately I seem to be too weak to this food's supernatural power to be able to succeed (curse you cobbler!). If anyone can give that a shot and actually pull through with it, let me know how it goes! read more

Oh Hoover's.. You hold a special place in my heart, and my entire stomach. mmmm yummy :) This is definitley not the type of place you eat at everyday, or every week for that matter.. the portions are just SO MASSIVE. You become burstingly full of food half way through your meal, but will you continue to eat? Yes you will... it's just that good. I've literally never had one thing here that wasn't delicious, but the fried okra, mac 'n cheese and mashed potato's are downright delicious.. the ribs are perfect and tender, the fried catfish is full of flavor and never dry, and the specials never cease to amaze me. If you want some down-home-feed-your-soul cooking, Hoover's is your next stop.. And don't forget to bring your appetite... all of it. read more

What's great about Hoover's is the portion sizes are huge and the staff is usually very friendly. It's a really homey place with real Southern comfort food. They offer a lot of classic Southern meals, such as chicken fried steak and fried catfish, all of which are hearty and tasty. The meatloaf is probably my favorite item, and it comes with three choices of sides, and they also bring you out a basket of warm cornbread and cinnamon bread. Their fries are decent, as are most of the other sides, and I usually end up ordering the green beans and coleslaw or potato salad. Overall, I can't really think of something I dislike about Hoover's - I usually end up going home with leftovers and it has a really comfortable environment. read more

I personally love Hoover's, I take all of my out of town guests there. I love the moist meats, side dishes, cornbread, sweet potato rolls and salads. During the Thanksgiving, I get the giblet gravy, spot on cornbread dressing, delicious greens and macaroni and cheese catered to go When my husband is in the dog house we go to Hoover's, He convinced my to move to Austin by taking me to Hoovers. He proposed after a dinner at Hoover's. We love the place and tell everyone how great the food is. Avoid Sundays after church it will be super crowded and I must say the desserts are not great so I avoid them. read more

Wow. This was our first time here and we were impressed. Had the spinach artichoke dip for an appetizer, and I have to say the soft foccacia was the star. Great! We had 2 things off the specials menu... Smothered pork chops and the tilapia with etoufee sauce. These were excellent with the pork just nosing ahead of the fish. If I go back I would order either again. The third person ordered the chicken fried chicken off the regular menu. It was good but the other items over shadowed it!!! For sides we had the dinner salad, cheddar garlic grits, mac & cheese, mustard greens, and broccoli. All were good but the grits and the broccoli were the clear winners. The mustard greens were sweet which we didn't care for, the mac & cheese was a little globby and not very creamy. Dessert was a shared blackberry cobbler a la mode. Yumyumyum! Come just for this. Wowza! I wanted to lick the bowl clean. Try it! Edited to add: Our server was GREAT... He recommended the pork and walked us through all the sides and specials. He helped make us customers! Thanks! read more

Lovely place, lovely food and super nice staff and owner. This is a quintessentially Austin place to go and hang out with friends and family. The food is southern comfort food with a twist. Every ingredient, every plate and dish is very thoughtfully sourced, prepared and presented. You can tell on your palate. Nothing is too salty or overly sweet, flavors pop and meld where they should. This is for lack of a better word "high end" & "gourmet" comfort food. There is NOTHING like this in Austin. The staff is laid back, friendly yet efficient. The margaritas are bar none the very best in town, according to me and others I gather. Again it has to do with the quality of the ingredients. Mr. Hoover you infuse your food with skills, thoughfulness, top ingredients and love, and we taste it! This is my new go to haunt for happy hour, and while I shouldn't as often as I do, religiousely like clock work, goodness me I just can't help it. This is where you will find me every Friday. And I am at the gym the rest of the week working off the delciousness. Try their new hot sauces, which are delicious and beautifully presented. My personal favorites? Frozen Beet Margerita (must be tried to become a believer!) Buttermilk Pie BBQ Chicken Ribs Turkey sliders (plase bring them back!!) Oh my! :-) read more

I have always loved Hoover's and their food. I cried when the one north closed down. It's a drive for us to get to this location. The hostess didn't have the most'ess. She was rude from the minute we walked in. I think the first person you see when you walk in a place sets the tone for the overall business. I would have felt really deflated but I hoped the food would make up for her behavior and it did (mostly). It's not the first time we encountered a meanie at Hoovers at Manor rd, but it had been so long I wasn't expecting it. We were dining in for an early dinner. The chicken fried steak and catfish were pretty good. My son wasn't too fond of the meatloaf. I tried it and thought it was "ok" a little too dense.
