Everything looks like it's from the 1980s. Place is run by a Chinese (Cantonese speaking) mom and pop. Sushi quality is mediocre. Pricing is good though. Quantity over quality. The food presentation is ghetto. Even though I was dining in, my sushi combo was served on a paper plate. See photo. When I showed my friends, they thought I went to a potluck. My buddy's bento box was served on a better looking but still disposable tray. Guessing the owners couldn't be bothered to hire a dishwasher. Knock 1 star off for the environmental impact. Asked my husband we should try this place, been there for years, maybe it has good food. So we called for our take out. Very disappointed. When you order sushi, california roll....wasabi is a given. We got home and NO WASABI. I called and was told we had to ASK for it....needless to say WE ARE NOT COMING BACK. We could not eat the California Roll and the salmon, hate to do it but it may go bad and may end up going to the garbage. So first and last time for this restaurant. read more

Mom and pop style eatery. Simple and cozy setting. Upon walking in the colourful photos caught my attention. We weren't greeted by the waitress (wife?) when we walked in, but we were served tea and given menus right away. After ordering ... we sat for about 2 minutes before our food came. A good indication that it's pre-made and sitting around waiting for someone to order it. The waitress isn't very social. She would simply walked out of the kitchen with our food ... set it on the table ... and walked away. Each dish that was brought out to us was in complete silence. I wasn't too impressed with our food being served on disposable plates and were given disposable utensils and a Styrofoam cup for tea and a plastic bowl for soup. You had to walk through the kitchen area to get to the bathroom / storage room / hot water tank room ... the bathroom was FILTHY!!!! When you walk past the kitchen / prep area ... I was a bit disappointed with the food quality and packaging. Let's start with the good... Hong Sushi gives a lot of sushi for a good price and the service was friendly. If you're looking for quick takeout, I'd recommend one of their combos - there's enough for leftovers as well. When it comes to food quality, I found their rolls to be a little bland. I'm no sushi expert but I found that their Alaska rolls & Dynamite rolls were not very flavourful. Especially in comparison to other sushi I've had in Vancouver/Burnaby. Presentation could use a little help as well. Moving on, everything came in styrofoam non-recyclable food containers. It would be nice to see something a bit more unique or eco-friendly. Seating inside is closed during COVID but even if it was open, the ambiance was not very appealing. Until a few of these critiques are addressed, I can't really recommend eating here unless you're just looking for a cheap wasabi holder. read more

Disappointing. Ordered the sashimi salad and it arrives with one tiny piece of lettuce. Stretching the definition of salad as far as you possibly can. $13 for what amounts to 3-4 pieces of farmed salmon, 3-4 pieces of tuna and 1/4 of an avocado. My friends brought me here for some sushi take-out before we retired to their house for pre-drinks and debauchery as we painted the town red on Saturday night. I was delighted to see two different veggie combos on the menu, and had trouble deciding which one to pick, but ended up with the first one, along with some gomae. We ran to the liquor store while we waited for our takeout, since the only two tables in the restaurant were full. We came back to find all of our food ready and waiting. We dove into our rolls when we got back to the house, and everything tasted good. The sushi here was decent and reasonably priced. We stumbled to this sushi restaurant one evening as I have been passing by this restaurant frequently while walking to yoga class. The restaurant was packed and definitely busy with take out orders as well. Price for items is very reasonable. Quality is decent. Food was prepared quickly. The odd note is that all the food is served on take out containers. I felt like I was at the food court! Miso soup had bits of imitation crab meat which was a first for me to see in miso soup. Usually, I would find tofu. The value is there. Service was alright. The server was too busy that my tea was never refilled. Food arrived quickly. Gave this one a try based on reviews and was sorely disappointed. The portions are decent for the price but the quality was lacking. The two stars are for the regular salmon and tuna (rolls) which usually has a high turnover and was fine. Nothing to write home about. So I'm sure depending on the timing of when they break out their "fresh" fish you can have a good experience here. Ordered a few pieces of sashimi and think I got the ends that were exposed for too long. After a bite I realized the saba was discolored (one side freshly cut was white meat, the other side yellowish) and tasted old and spat it out. We got a plain udon and it came with veggies that seemed to be cut and frozen (for too long) and boiled. (Broccoli, mushroom and baby carrots in udon don't usually belong.) The outside was freezer burnt and the inside was mush. We got this to go so couldn't request any changes in person. Wish I hadn't tipped so much. Won't be coming here again. read more

Simple, affordable, consistent and good portions. I always get the sushi special when I'm here which consists of the Salmon Maki Roll, California Roll and Yam Tempura Roll. For around $7, you get 18 pieces of sushi as well as a side of miso soup. It's hard to get that kind of deal anymore anywhere! We showed up 20 minutes after the confirmation and it was ready which was great! The rice was too mushy and didn't have much flavour (vinegar, sugar etc). The sashimi was not as firm as other places. The soy sauce provided was dark and just really salty - tasted like a chinese brand. This is a great place to get affordable Japanese food in North Burnaby. Good portions, good selection and tasty food at a great price. Food is ready for pick up in 10-15 mins. Sashimi is generously sliced. They serve miso soup while you're waiting for the food. Do not order the chicken Karaage though, it's too much batter and too much oil. The rolls and sushi trays are all pretty good, great value and great choice for bringing to a party. Fast, efficient and good for the price. Ordered the salmon avocado roll, spicy smoked oyster roll with salmon, tuna and toro nigiri with a side of gyoza. It came around to 20 bucks altogether and i was stuffed. I came with two friends and we sat and was given a jug of water (always a bonus). Best cheap sushi you can get. Spicy salmon and tuna rolls are fresh and on point. But what blows my mind at Hong is their chicken teriyaki + rice. It's different from your regular teriyaki; there's so much more flavour. They bread the chicken or something and it tastes so good! My high school was steps away from this place and I used to always place a take-out order of chicken teriyaki. I docked one star because of their poor customer service. Once I called half an hour beforehand for takeout and by the time I got there I waited another half an hour. When I asked for an explanation she said "I wanted you to have the freshest food." A small little place just before the hill up to SFU. with a few small tables. Staff were friendly and courteous and the food fresh tasting and arrived quickly. Only problem, and it is a big problemfor me which is why I will only give it two stars, is they use styrofoam containers not only for takeout but for use while you eat there as well. We decided to eat there and every item we received was disposable. The water came in a disposable cup, the rice bowl in a styrofoam cup, sushi on styrofoam platters... One cannot expect recyclable containers for takeout from all businesses as it might not always be affordable, but if you are going to eat there it seems unnecessary to use containers that are not reusable. I would definitely go there again if they would use other options for dine-in but until then I will hold myself back. read more

Dishonourable service. I've been in this restaurant a few times now; its small and dingy but the sushi is pretty good. When I was in there last I noticed that while they've always just gave me water in a plastic cup they gave the other guy in there tea without him asking for it. I enjoyed coming here and supporting a small local business, but I feel quite let down and insulted. I'm disappointed that I can never go in there and purchase food from them again as I cannot support a company that conducts itself with dishonour and favouritism to its patrons. It used to be cheap fast and decent. Now it's average priced for less than average food... Also service seemed to slow as well. Entree quality is also so so... the yakisoba is more bean sprouts than noodles, but if that suits your style, the sauce they use is tasty. I'm an extremely fussy eater, but this is now my go-to sushi restaurant in Burnaby because their food is delicious (the spicy pumpkin roll is so good!), it's reasonably priced and the customer service is great.
