To be honest, I was kinda disappointed. The best Chinese BBQ places that I've been to have always been kinda ghetto and a little dirty. This place definitely hit all those points. I got half a duck, and a soy chicken. They were pretty cheap, and it looked great. The problem was that the duck and chicken were both only lukewarm, and the breast meat on the chicken (the hardest part to get right, but also what sets the average apart from the great) was a bit dry. The duck was moist, and tasted great, but the skin wasn't crispy at all and it was kind of lukewarm. So in the end, a very average experience. read more

Crispy duck is totally the way to go. So crispy and flavorful. My three year old loved it! Beware of bones, though! Still so good! GET THE DUCK!!! We also got the salted fish fried rice? I love this place! It's truly a hidden gem, inside a small unsuspecting food court. The staff are multilingual and super attentive and helpful. They do their best to answer any questions you have, and are quick to get you served. The food is consistently delicious and fairly priced. Bad service. Poor attitude. Slow staff. No eye contact, no greeting or a single word. Kind of discrimination. They just don't care. This weekend I stopped by and tried to get some bbq, the staffs there were tooooo slow. There was only one people in the line and the 2 staffs did not even look at me when it was my turn. It was hard to fell I was welcomed. After 10 seconds I chose to leave when I saw the sign "pay 3.5% more when you use credit card." I also felt being discriminated since I don't speak Cantonese but I speak Mandarin. The customers who spoke Cantonese was treated well and they chatted happily. I won't pretend to be a cantonese style-bbq expert but I think this place has the best BBQ. I think their actual dishes are okay but the meats themselves are the best think. BBQ pork, roast pork and soy sauce chicken- can't go wrong. As a side note, the issue with soy sauce chicken is that almost all places cook the bird whole. This is always a problem because white and dark meat finish at different cookt temps and length. I am really digging the Chinatown foodcourt right now. I have ate at 3 restaurants here in the past 12 hours and I must say my tummy is pretty happy. I ordered a little over 2lbs of crispy pork (heo quay in Vietnamese) from Hong Kong BBQ. This is a dish I am very familiar with. In the past I have often gotten shafted by the butcher who picks out pieces whose meat to fat ratio lies heavily towards the fat side. No bueno. Who wants to eat a mouthful of fat? Wait.. A lot of people probably do but not I. Fortunately, I did not have that experience at Hong Kong BBQ. The meat to fat ratio was weighted towards the meat side. Hurray! If you are still with me following my meat to fat ratio rant, I would also like to inform you that the meat was not over cooked. When overcooked the meat tends to be dry and chewy but the dish offered to me was very succulent. So I recommend the crispy pork. Give it a shot my minions! I will be back to try their other dishes. Not a bad place for some quick Cantonese barbecue. Here, you can order soy sauce chicken, roast pork, barbecue pork, and roast duck. There are also the typical Cantonese noodle dishes (for example, pan fried noodles), which I didn't get to sample. My meal was prepared quickly. No credit cards accepted at this establishment. You can order in Cantonese or English, but if your Chinese is bad like mine, you're not at a disadvantage ordering in English. The barbecue meat with rice dishes also comes with a vegetable soup and a small side of Chinese vegetables. Both were light. I'm not sure if the soup selection rotates, but it should be noted that many Chinese vegetable soups (including the one here) are flavored with little bits of meat. You also get the right amount of barbecue seasoning (green onions and soy sauce) served on your rice. If you want a fast Chinese barbecue meal at a reasonable price, this place is worth a stop. The food isn't outstanding, but it isn't bad either. Also, given its location in a Chinese food court, you can always mix and match with other types of Chinese cuisine. read more

So I came here again and got San Bao Fan...and apparently you get duck, char siu beef, and roast chicken UNLESS you specify that you wanted roast pork instead of roast chicken. You can also do this for duck only, and it's $6.50, not $6.99 I was pretty pleased with it, they serve you the meat on a small bed of rice and put lu shui (it's the sauce with spices used to cook the meat) over it so that it's not bland. You can also ask them to add more so the rice isn't all white and tasteless. However, the duck had a somewhat more gamey flavor than usual that I was put off by and the roast chicken really had no flavor. However, I don't really think you can go wrong with the savory tastiness of beef and stir fried noodles. It was salty without being overpowering to the taste buds. The pork wasn't horrible, but didn't have that crispy exterior like I was hoping for. I did order this to-go so maybe that's where it lacked...it had time to steam up and stuff in the styrofoam container? Either way, reheating it again by baking it up worked nicely (I guess) but even doing that, it still wasn't as crispy as I would have liked. Meat was also very fatty. Cheap, delicious, and fast. Can't get any better than that. Ordered the two meats over rice- with bbq pork and char siu. It came with rice, soup (varies daily) Chinese bok Choy, and a cup for tea or water. It was only $7! The first time we had this the bbq pork was pretty fatty, but the following day, it was delicious. So it really varies on the type of roasted pig you're getting. Additionally, we also ordered another combo and tried the cuttle fish and soy sauce chicken which was yummy as well. The soy sauce chicken comes with the ginger/green onion and oil mixture which really compliments the chicken! I was disappointed with this place after I had dinner at the foodcourt. I ordered the duck plate and it looked great. When I started eating the duck I noticed that almost all of it was bone. I know this isn't a "nice" sit down restaurant but I don't think the part of the duck I got should have ever gone out to a customer. First trip to HK BBQ last night. I took home some hot and sour soup, rice congee and a half duck. Food court style dining. Friendly and helpful English speaking employees. The duck was very good. The meat was moist, the skin crispy and the flavor very good. The congee was good. The stand out was the hot and sour soup. Loaded with mushrooms and meat, the flavor of the soup was spot on; sour with a hint of spice (just as the name would suggest). This place is hard to find for the uninitiated. It is located just south of Chamblee-Dunwoody Rd in the Chinatown shopping center. Look for the food court signs. Tip: Call before 5 pm, if you plan to pick up some pressed duck after 5 pm. read more

Been here and the Chinese food court many times with my boyfriends family. This place might be my favorite. It's simple and they have duck! I got the duck soup and the beef chow fun (flat noodles). I've tried the fried noodles as well. It all tastes really fresh and refreshing. The one big downfall of this place is that the air condition is really bad and if you don't sit under a vent or fan it can become unbearable in the heat. I'm a fan! I bought 1/2 of the roast duck & 1/2 of the pressed duck to compare side-by-side in Peking duck buns (bao, scallions, hoisin), and couldn't tell a difference between the two, but they were equally delicious! As other people have noted, it is bone-in, but 1) the price is 100% fair considering quantity & quality & how much work roast duck takes, and 2) you can go through and pick out the bones & gristle and freeze them to make duck stock (which is delicious). The woman working the counter was very sweet and friendly, and I watched the guy chopping the meat take the ducks and deftly slice off pieces using a giant knife, which was frankly cool as hell. As a bonus to this review, I'm including my method for ideal reheating of roast duck & assembly of easy & cheap Peking duck buns at home! To get supercrispy skin, separate the skin from the meat & crisp it on a hot griddle. Shred the meat into your preferred-size bites & after the skin is crisp & has been put on a paper towel to drain, toss the meat onto the griddle (into the fat that rendered out of the skin, which keeps it moist) and sauté for 30-60 seconds just to heat through. Separating skin & meat this way means you can have skin as crisp as you want without overcooking the meat! Pop some crispy skin & shredded meat into some bao- you can find frozen bags of bao that steam in the microwave at Buford Hwy Farmer's Market about 2 miles away (aisle 22). Then add scallions & hoisin, & ta-da! You have a super delicious & easy meal on your hands. A whole roast duck makes for about 20-30 buns depending on how generously you fill them, and the duck will last for several days, so if you're a duck bun fanatic like I am, you can make duck buns for dayssss (assuming it lasts that long!). read more

It's one of the few really good places to eat in Chinatown square. Chinatown square is kind of like an open air market but only inside. If you like roasted duck or pork, this place is the BOMB. I went here the other day for the first time with, once again my buddy, the executive chef of a RW concept and we just about (or at least I did) tear the duck apart. For a mere $12, we both got the Peking duck which comes with rice, steam napa cabbage, and soup. The price also included soda for each. My duck was the best I have ever had so my face was in it. I mean, thank god none of you saw me because my face was full of sauce when I was done! My buddy on the other hand, thought his duck was a bit bony. But all in all, one heck of a lunch for $12. The duck was seasoned just right and cooked to perfection. It was moist and the sauce was flavorful without tasting like the dead sea....full of salt. Although not much of an atmosphere for the sophisticated diner, if you enjoy the feeling of being in China, this is the best you'll get in Atlanta. Lucky for you no one there makes stinky tofu. Ok. The dude who gave this place 2 stars is just far too hung up on how the place looks. The food here is hands down the best authentic cantonese in Atlanta. We usually get beef pan fried noodles, dry beef chow fun, and salt and pepper tofu. We also on occasion get the bbq pork and salt and pepper squid. There is no fault with any of it. I have never been at this place when there hasn't been a line. We've even been there on a day when someone ordered a whole roast pig. It looked delicious. Mmm, pork. So, if you want great cantonese food, this is the place to get it. Yes, it's not the most romantic of establishments (that's an understatement) but get over it! This is the third restaurant I have tried in ghetto Chinatown mall food court. This food court is really starting to grow on me. It is definitely a good place to have a low key inconspicuous meal. I also like the fact that there is tons of ghetto Asians here. I was going to order some Chinese cold cuts like roast pork or roast pig over rice. I was trying to grab something light, but I saw curry beef stew over rice on the menu and I couldn't resist. It has been a while since I had curry beef stew. It was a pretty solid dish of curry beef stew. The portion was good and they also give you a huge dish of rice. I have been a carb fiend lately so I actually appreciate having a heap of rice to mix with my curry sauce. Hong Kong BBQ is the way to go if you're looking for Chinese style duck. They offer both roasted and open pressed, in half size or the whole duck. The roast duck is juicy, while open pressed is leaner and covered with hoisin sauce on the outer skin. Either way you go, it's going to be delicious. Another favorite here is the dry beef chow fun. They give you a huge portion so you can share between two people. The only downside about this place is that they only accept cash. The first time I came, I ended up having to draw money out of the ATM which takes a lot of fees. read more

We only got the duck, so my review will be for this. It's cheap (rolling in at 18.99 for whole and 9.99 for half) compared to what I usually pay in NC, so I was happy. It is delicious and the meat is tender, so you know that they know what they're doing. My only gripe is that I expected the skin to be crispier, but a good few minutes under the broiler solved that problem and I got it to-go anyway, so I'm not too concerned about it. In the time that I ordered and waited for my duck to come out, I saw 3-4 families each getting 2 ducks. Granted, I came on July 4th, but still--these people like their duck. I was also tempted to get the glistening char siu with the black char marks on the edges and the crispy roast pork with a tinge of pink that suggests it's been cooked perfectly. However, I just ate dinner with my family at Chong Qing nearby, so I wasn't about to go ham (I guess in this case, roast pork). I'll be back, though, for sure. read more

Somewhat dry, and certainly not crispy enough, I was glad I ordered the small portion. In the interest of full disclosure, it must be said that I am generally not a huge fan of anybody's roast pork. That said, a word about place. Chinatown Mall and its denizens have oft been described as "ghetto". Sure, its a shabby, faux mandarin, Mao-era style building whose food court features crying babies, half-cleaned tables and men yelling. But look a little deeper and culinary gems are there barely beneath the surface. A number of inexpensive, authentically prepared dishes can easily be found. So don't let the ghetto of the mind prevent you from discovering a friendly, well priced and tasty culinary world. read more

Yeah the BBQ is good. It's in the name and everything. Go for the Malaysian food though. This place is run by Malaysians and they make good, cheap curries. Not as good as Penang (what is?) but a worthy alternative and a bit cheaper. They have an extensive menu and I've only gotten around to trying curries. I should try some of the other stuff.
