I've ben here a handful of times. I like this place, it is not bad. It's fine, nothing wrong with it but nothing exceptional. It looks cool, has a cool ambiance and good music. The service is pretty good. The food, in my opinion is hit or miss depending on the day. The mat time had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and that pretty much sums up the place at this point - the tomatoes aren't great, the breading was thick and hard. The crust on the tuna had the perfect smoky char, while the castelvetrano olive sauce underneath added this briny, creamy pop that tied everything together. Add fried capers and peppery arugula, and you've got this amazing mix of creamy, salty, crunchy, and fresh. A vegetarian dish that doesn't feel like a compromise. Chicken Wings I was not prepared for how addictive these would be. The garlic-honey sriracha sauce hits every corner of your mouth -- sweet, spicy, garlicky -- and it sticks (in the best way). Second time visiting southbound and can only say good things!! This time I went for lunch (which had a different menu than the dinner menu) and got the burger with mac and cheese and buffalo cauliflower. Food was amazing and came out quick! Sodas were also served from glass bottles which were unique! We sat outside on the patio and despite being the only people out there our server was very attentive! Enjoyed a nice date night dinner at southbound and would definitely recommend it as a lowkey spot in downtown Chamblee! If you're a big coffee drinker, southbound turns into moonbird in the morning, which I would highly recommend too as a cafe! At night they become a southern restaurant with a lot of classic southern options on their menu. We started with the deviled eggs and I thought they were pretty decent for deviled eggs but it's usually not my favorite thing. I had the Chamblee hot chicken with Mac n cheese and kale salad for my meal and Alex had bbq with a side of Mac n cheese and fries. Out of the two mains, I thought the bbq was just ok and the sauce was kinda weird so I wouldn't recommend that, but the hot chicken was PHENOMENAL!!!! The Szechuan peppers add such a good heat and taste to it, the chicken is perfectly breaded and fried, and the sauce that goes with it is fantastic! The Mac and kale salad were also pretty decent sides too! Was here on a Tuesday night where there was some live music. Sat at the bar with a good view and listening ear. The bartender was very friendly and fairly attentive-- definitely left us to our conversation as well. We ordered wine and a few appetizers. Funny, we asked the bartender what he recommended, and he literally recommended every appetizer. When he left, we said to each other, "Did he did recommend them all?" So that wasn't helpful. We ordered the beet "mousse" salad and fish tacos. They weren't that good. Tasted weird, not a lot of flavor. The beets were the best part, but they had so few beets served with mounds of this "mousse." I don't remember anything but a few tasty bites of beet and a lot of sweet sweet cheesy- Cool whip like stuff. The fish tacos just tasted like corn torillas. They were beyond bland and I don't think had any sauce or binding. They just crumbled into cardboard tasteless nothingness. Not much going on at the bar or in the restaurant. No real manager presence. Sort of felt like being at a party you weren't invited to. When we left, the host barely looked up and clearly could have cared less about being there. Well, they forgot my Brussels, but the bar tender instantly noticed and had them brought for me. The Brussels were my lowlight. They should have been cut thinner. They were so large that they were very bland in the middle. The collards were magnificent. They were cooked in a tomato broth of some sorts. I've never had collards like this. As a collard fan, I was thoroughly satisfied. The brisket was the star though! This is 5 brisket! It's amazing! Most places I go, I can cook better brisket than they do. This place blows my brisket skills away! Wow! Only issue I have with the brisket is the size for the price ratio. Service: magnificent! I think I lucked at by sitting at the bar. Our family really wanted to like this restaurant as the Yelp pictures looked great; however, it wasn't meant to be. We love the menu items at Hopstix. When we noticed that Southbound was nearby, we decided to give it a try. We ordered the BBQ beef rib entree, to see how their food held up. Sadly, the beef rib was all globs of gelatinous fat with only a few bites of tough meat. The few bites of meat were stuck in between the globs of fat. It was not convenient to bring our "to-go" order back and speak with the hostess so we chalked it up to "Tried it, disappointed, won't return." The restaurant may need to speak with their meat vendor if this is what they're serving to potential loyal customers. read more

We then ordered a few small dishes and shared them: Wood Grilled Octopus (Spanish octopus, smoked potato, creme fraiche, green tomato, gremolata), Seared Sea Scallops (watermelon, serrano, mint, guajillo chili, lime, avocado puree), and Atlantic Salmon (Carringer Farms kale, tahini dressing, tomato cucumber salad). It had been a while since my first and only brunch visit to Southbound so I decided to stop in again for dinner one evening. We didn't have a reservation but there was some outdoor seating available. Of course, it was also freezing and dark outside, but there were some outdoor heaters. They were a little malfunctioning, but thankfully, the one by my table was fine. Other tables around us weren't quite as lucky. Alcohol is always warming Thankfully food came out HOT so we had some time to take pictures AND eat the food before it got cold. I loved the cocktails - easy drinking and exactly how I like my gin cocktails. However, they were also not too fancy and complex, and just tasty, which is all that matters. Deviled eggs were simple and basic but hearty... just like the rest of the meal. I loved the honey hot wings, although we realized we had ordered a bit too much food for 2. We ended up taking most of those to go so we could finish our Wild Georgia Shrimp and Osso Bucco. Tbh, you probably won't see half these dishes or drinks on the menu now - they have a seasonal menu with rotating new tastes and bites based on availability of fresh ingredients. So definitely check out what they have this summer! And subtle plug - if you're looking for coffee, my favorite coffee shop in Chamblee is Moonbird, although their COVID hours have made it harder for me to get there in the mornings, but definitely pick up a Mexican Mocha upstairs in Southbound. read more

Felt like walking into a friends BBQ place. Very friendly and welcoming crowd of people. Great service, and even better food. We had the chicken sandwhich, which we thot was a tiny, came out to be an entre size that the ex-girlfriend could not finish. Then there was the brisket + 3, and the smoke ring on that was legit. And finally, my bbq beef rib was fork tender, big beefy goodness, and melt in your mouth. I think these guys know a thing or two about slow and low. My friend David and I chose to dine here tonight. It was easy making reservations on the Yelp app. It was my first time dining here and it is a charming historic building in old town Chamblee. Parking was free and ample for our 7pm reservation. Indoor and patio seating is available however tonight we chose to dine indoors because of the unseasonably cold weather. Tables and chairs are comfortable and patrons are spaced out. Service from arrival to departure was friendly and efficient. We started with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes and we chose the cocktails named "return to blood mountain ". I ordered the vegetarian meal which comes with the chef's daily choice of three vegetarian items which are served with a side of cornbread and honey butter. The featured vegetarian items tonight are brussell sprouts petals, green beans and buffalo spiced cauliflower. It was all delicious and exceeded my expectations. David ordered the meat and three meal. We split the banana pudding dessert. Everything was delicious and we loved our dining experience. We recommend this place! read more

Parking lot isn't that big. So if you go during a busy time, you might get unlucky with parking. The interior and exterior seemed nice. It's a good place to come for drinks with your friends because the noise level is pretty loud inside. So I wouldn't recommend to come to here for dinner on a one on one date. From the moment our waiter started waiting our table, I knew the night was going to be off. The waiter just had a stone cold face, body language was very unwelcoming, and tone was just sounding like he was annoyed by us. We came for a friend's birthday dinner and we asked in advance if it's okay that we bring a cake. They said we could but when our waiter was telling us we can't bring the cake. He sounded very annoyed and said that he will ask his manager. He never came back and told us what his manager said, he kind of just moved on from that situation and took drink orders. When we started ordering food, we asked questions about some of the dishes, I mean seriously. The guy's tone was just bad the entire time. We ordered and We probably waited about like 15-20 mins for food, which wasn't bad of a wait. Food was okay. Later when we were trying to eat the cake, I didn't even realize our cake was with us the whole time off of the table. Every time I've been somewhere with a cake and they allowed it, the waiter would always take it to the fridge and bring it out later. So when we were about to eat it, we asked if we can get small plates. He wasn't wanting to bring us some but ended up bringing some. But brought only plates. I mean... did he want us to use our hands to eat? So when I asked for forks, that's when he brought us some. But honestly, he barley waited our table because by the time we were leaving, almost all the tables near us were cleared. We got there at 630 and left close to 9... It was so much going on that we didn't even notice the prices for our checks. But literally some of the food prices were charged more than the menu. We think there were hidden fees maybe with sides or something. But our waiter never disclosed to us so we aren't even sure. All I know is that I'm not coming back. read more

I stopped in on a quiet Saturday afternoon with a local buddy, and was reminded of how beautiful a space it was. I'd been there years before, when it was a coffeehouse, and they appear to have retained most of the interior. They were serving a reduced menu until 5pm, and the place was pretty empty. We got a great seat by the front window, and a server popped up pretty quickly. My buddy started out with a tomato soup that he declared to be just about perfect. I wanted some more beer, but didn't want a whole beer, and they cheerfully split the beer into two separate glasses for us. This might not have happened on a busy night, but it shows how friendly and helpful the staff was. My buddy continued with the veggie plate, which pretty clearly said that the chef would choose the veggies, but they had no problem letting my buddy pick. The cauliflower was pretty tasty, if a bit spicy for me. The salad seemed fine, as did the mac and cheese. My Southern Ramen++ was freakin' amazing. I'm a big ramen fan, and this is a brilliant interpretation that incorporates lots of the textures and flavors of ramen, while being *completely* different. The smoked pork was super-savory, and the flavor had totally infused the salty, but not greasy, broth. The collards, and deviled egg seemed like a nod to Japanese ramen, but totally different, and totally wonderful. The beans brought some brightness. The noodles were the only thing that seemed Japanese, and there were solid without being amazing. The whole package rocked, and the serving was very, very generous. $18 is a lot for a bowl of ramen, but this was totally worth it. I packed up easily half of it to take home, and then managed to walk off without it, like an idiot. If I had any problem, it was that the runner dropped off both chopsticks and a porcelain ramen spoon that the edge of the table, and I only spotted the spoon, so I wound up eating with my fork. All in all, this place was a delight, and I hope to be back next time I'm in the Atlanta area. It's definitely worth a trip! read more

Theresa was awesome, if I had-to rate the service, it would be five stars. Wings were a little dry and overcooked but the beet salad was fantastic. Juicy beets with the creamy light possible goat cheese on the plate going so well with the arugula and the crunchy nuts . Perfect for my blood pressure!! Cuban needs a little work maybe less smoke, collards were fantastic love the fact that they were vegetarian not over, salted and done with tomato. The acidity made them perfect. I would have to say the mac & cheese was good. I like the corkscrew pasta. It holds a lot of the sauce, so it wasn't a dry mac & cheese. We will definitely return! read more
