My niece came into town for her birthday and was really excited to check out Honeybear Café because of its popularity on TikTok. Honeybear is a perfect example of how a strong social media following can help you build a successful restaurant almost anywhere. There really isn't much happening around 7036 N. Clark Street, it's a pretty typical far North Side Chicago area with not a lot going on, but Honeybear definitely stands out. They even have a beautiful mural on the side of the building that makes for a great photo opportunity. When we arrived, there were probably about 20 people ahead of us, and the wait was around 30 minutes. So, if you're planning to go, definitely be prepared to wait a little. Once we got inside, the restaurant was pretty packed, but the waitstaff was super helpful and did a great job helping us navigate the menu. I will say that I think the menu would benefit from having more pictures. The descriptions of the food are OK, but it would be much more helpful if they highlighted some of the especially popular items, the dishes that people are seeing and getting excited about online. Most of the menu items are à la carte, but my niece and I decided to go with the combos so we could get more for our money. We both got the French toast. I got mine with eggs, breakfast potatoes, and turkey bacon, while I believe my niece got the chicken sausage. Honestly, the food was just OK. Everything was cooked well, and there wasn't anything wrong with the meal. I did have to send the turkey bacon back because I like mine extra crispy, but they were happy to take care of it. The breakfast potatoes were solid as well. That said, I'm a big stickler for breakfast food, and nothing about my meal really wowed me. My niece actually felt pretty much the same way. Considering the hype surrounding Honeybear and the amount of time we had to wait for a table, it personally wasn't worth it for me. I would probably have to go back and try some of their more popular menu items to really understand what all the hype is about. It was a decent, solid meal, but my standards for breakfast are pretty high. I've been to plenty of hole-in-the-wall spots in Chicago that have blown me away with the quality of their food. This is also the city that gave us the original House of Pancakes, and in terms of flavor, I don't think Honeybear comes anywhere close. That doesn't mean it's bad, it just means the food didn't live up to the expectations created by the hype for me. However, if you're willing to wait and stick with some of their more popular dishes, you may have a better experience. I feel like their chefs are in the back just throwing any ideas they can at French toast and going "yes, and not only that, but-" They knock it out of the park every time. I don't know how they do it, but their Concha special was delicious, as was their cookie butter and banana. If you can't eat a lot of sweet food, steal a bite or two off a friend's plate. The space itself is lively, bright, and welcoming...perfectly decorated for spring with pastels, bunnies, and flowers. Menu is pretty extensive leaning towards breakfast although they also have sandwiches. I ordered their bayou dish and my husband had their biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon. The food came out really quickly and the portions are huge! I enjoyed my bayou dish with the andouille sausage and hash browns (they know how to make them) and pancakes. I enjoyed the pancakes as well as they are more on the fluffy side and not thick/dense. The biscuit and grits are what you would expect but I especially liked the bacon (thick). Nice ambiance, lots of friendly servers and they even give you two small pieces of what looks like cheesecake. Price wise, a bit on the higher end but for the portion sizes, well worth it. My first stop in Chicago and we came to Honeybear Cafe. This breakfast spot came highly recommended in the comments on Instagram! I would highly suggest reservations as this place was packed and we were there around 10:30AM. It's a very festive establishment with an extensive menu and they welcome you with a bowl of candy to pick from and mini cheesecake bites. If you have a sweet tooth like me, this place is a dream come true. They have so many options of sweet and savory items. We went with the French toast flight that included a Churro, Tres Leches and Creme Brulee French Toast. We also ordered a Cookie Butter one and they were HUGE! For our entree we got a Stuffed Cajune cheesesteak biscuit and again, it was HUGE! But honestly, it sounded better than it was. It had potential but needed more sauce. There was just too much hash brown and veggies and not enough meat and sauce. My friends ordered lattes and one said hers wasn't sweet enough and the other liked her cookie butter one. No lie, there were at least 15 birthdays in my 2 hours there. But to get into the food, it was delicious! Their portions are amazing for the price, and our server was really nice, funny, and accommodating. Also, when we sat down they gave us free pieces of cheesecake, so this place was always going to win my heart. My party all loved their food. And if I didn't love their food, I would come back simply because they split the check 6 ways AND split 1 group item on each check. Loved this place. I was visiting Chicago for a concert and made a point to try Honey Bear Cafe after finding it online and reading the reviews and they were spot on! The food is absolutely delicious. I ordered the pancake platter and it was great! I also loved the mini cheesecake appetizers, that was unique: Service was quick and friendly, which was much appreciated, and the overall vibe of the restaurant was great. Honey Bear was recommended by a coworker and being that I love breakfast I was there the next day I was off. I made reservations and drove to Chicago. I found parking on a residential street right by the cafe. This was on a Thursday morning at 0830 and it was pretty empty so no reservations were really needed. Honey Bear felt like a home style cafe with happy service. The menu had quite a few options including some vegetarian dishes that looked worth while trying. I tried the huevos rancheros and became enveloped in the complexity of flavors. It took a couple of bites to adjust to the acidity of the salsa verde, but quickly found out that you have to dig your spoon down deep and get a good mix of the beans and tostadas to balance out the acidity. It was nice comfort food for breakfast which I am not used to. My wife had the vegetarian croissant with fresh fruit for her side and she thought it was great. We also ordered the french toast flight. The french toast looked amazing thanks to its elaborate and dazzling presentation. The french toast was a highlight of the meal and could easily hold up on its own. We ordered too much not knowing the serving sizes were all going to be enormous. I ate a half of the banana caramel french toast and we took the rest home. All three flavors were sweet and delicious in their own right and came down to preference as to which one was the best! There are so many things to choose from the menu! I got the skirt steak skillet. I asked for medium cooked steak but it came out well done. I didn't want to make a big deal of it but the waitress immediately noticed when I cut it and offered to make me a new one in the way I requested.
