I kid you not, this is the best french toast I've ever had. It wasn't too soggy or dry. All of the ingredient, like the cream and strawberries, blended well together. It also wasn't too sweet, which I was afraid of. The wait was about 30 minutes for a party of one (me) but it was totally worth it. It was a very upbeat and diner-like environment. Let's first start by saying that I had the MOST amazing food experience at the Honeybear Cafe! I 1000% recommend! Now, lol the journey here was very trying. Got drenched via unexpected rain ie my mom had a baby umbrella that we had to share BUT lol the taste of the food had my inner fatty disregard my wet toes, my wet shorts, and my wet shirt. Since I heard about the typical wait time, I made a reservation that allowed us to be seated quickly (so, that's a pro-tip). Upon seating, I immediately skimmed the menu and saw the dishes that were screaming my name, the Shrimp and Grits and the Trio French Toast Flight. The portions were massive, the price was very affordable, and the taste of ALL of my food was absolutely AUHMAZING. My niece came into town for her birthday and was really excited to check out Honeybear Café because of its popularity on TikTok. Honeybear is a perfect example of how a strong social media following can help you build a successful restaurant almost anywhere. There really isn't much happening around 7036 N. Clark Street, it's a pretty typical far North Side Chicago area with not a lot going on, but Honeybear definitely stands out. They even have a beautiful mural on the side of the building that makes for a great photo opportunity. When we arrived, there were probably about 20 people ahead of us, and the wait was around 30 minutes. So, if you're planning to go, definitely be prepared to wait a little. Once we got inside, the restaurant was pretty packed, but the waitstaff was super helpful and did a great job helping us navigate the menu. I will say that I think the menu would benefit from having more pictures. The descriptions of the food are OK, but it would be much more helpful if they highlighted some of the especially popular items, the dishes that people are seeing and getting excited about online. Most of the menu items are à la carte, but my niece and I decided to go with the combos so we could get more for our money. We both got the French toast. I got mine with eggs, breakfast potatoes, and turkey bacon, while I believe my niece got the chicken sausage. Honestly, the food was just OK. Everything was cooked well, and there wasn't anything wrong with the meal. I did have to send the turkey bacon back because I like mine extra crispy, but they were happy to take care of it. The breakfast potatoes were solid as well. That said, I'm a big stickler for breakfast food, and nothing about my meal really wowed me. My niece actually felt pretty much the same way. Considering the hype surrounding Honeybear and the amount of time we had to wait for a table, it personally wasn't worth it for me. I would probably have to go back and try some of their more popular menu items to really understand what all the hype is about. It was a decent, solid meal, but my standards for breakfast are pretty high. I've been to plenty of hole-in-the-wall spots in Chicago that have blown me away with the quality of their food. This is also the city that gave us the original House of Pancakes, and in terms of flavor, I don't think Honeybear comes anywhere close. That doesn't mean it's bad, it just means the food didn't live up to the expectations created by the hype for me. However, if you're willing to wait and stick with some of their more popular dishes, you may have a better experience. For this first visit, I can't give Honeybear more than 3 out of 5 stars. read more

And this place passed the vibe check. We did make a resy just to be on the safe side, but it wasn't needed or asked for honestly. We waited an hour and 10 minutes to get seated, but honestly, the food made it worth the wait. Parking can be a headache. They have a parking lot behind the building, but it gets packed, and people end up blocking other cars in. If you can find street parking I'd recommend that instead. Once we were seated they brought us a little piece of cheesecake which was a nice surprise. They also have fresh flowers on every table a small touch that makes the place feel welcoming. Our server was very nice and attentive even though the restaurant was absolutely packed. The food came out quickly too. We ordered a S'mores iced latte and I thought it was a fun option. Another cool thing is that they allow you to bring your own alcohol to mix with the juice you purchase there. I ordered the Lumberjack breakfast and the sausage absolutely blew me away. I usually don't care for breakfast sausage at other restaurants, but theirs was delicious. The ham was another standout. It was tender, flavorful and perfectly seasoned without being overly salty. Both were surprisingly good.The hash browns and eggs were pretty standard, but the bacon was delicious crispy and perfectly candied. I also upgraded my pancakes to the Banana Crunch. Unfortunately, when they arrived they were smothered in sauce which was a little overwhelming for me. I ended up removing the top pancake and enjoying the bananas and a little whipped cream with the bottom pancake. I think I would have enjoyed them more if the sauce had been served on the side. We also ordered the chorizo chilaquiles and they were really good. The chicken chorizo was surprisingly delicious and packed with flavor. The restaurant was very busy and loud inside, but that's not surprising considering how popular it is. They also had everything decorated for the upcoming holiday which added a nice festive touch. Overall, the wait was worth it. The sausage, ham and chilaquiles were my favorites. Tons of social media buzz brought us out-of-towners to Honeybear Cafe on a long weekend trip through Chicago! Street parking available on nearby and adjacent streets. The space itself is lively, bright, and welcoming...perfectly decorated for spring with pastels, bunnies, and flowers. Menu is pretty extensive leaning towards breakfast although they also have sandwiches. I ordered their bayou dish and my husband had their biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon. The food came out really quickly and the portions are huge! I enjoyed my bayou dish with the andouille sausage and hash browns (they know how to make them) and pancakes. I enjoyed the pancakes as well as they are more on the fluffy side and not thick/dense. The biscuit and grits are what you would expect but I especially liked the bacon (thick). Nice ambiance, lots of friendly servers and they even give you two small pieces of what looks like cheesecake. Price wise, a bit on the higher end but for the portion sizes, well worth it.
