My husband and I were staying at the Wild Eagle Lodge for a week and looking for a good Wisconsin fish fry. We decided to try out the Honey Bear because the menu said fried fish daily ( not just Friday night). It was excellent. Very large portion and very tasty! The cheese curds are amazing too - true Wisconsin style! And of course, being from Wisconsin (now living in Iowa), we had to have an Old Fashioned. Hands down probably the best one we have ever had so far. The young waitress we had did an amazing job and was very friendly. We will definitely be back next time we come up north!! read more

This seems to be one of the few restaurants in the area that does a fish fry every night. Most restaurants seem to only offer the fish fry on Fridays. The restaurant is small, and in our experience, if the night is slow they will close before their posted hours. I would advise calling ahead before heading out to the Honey Bear. My fried baby walleye was the excellent, cooked in a crisp light batter. The fish was mild and fresh tasting. For $17.99 I received 4 large fillets, choice of potato, coleslaw, and two slices of fresh rye bread. Tap beers were only $3.50. I would recommend the Honey Bear if you are looking for fried fish any night of the week. read more

They get one star only because zero stars is not an option. So we walk into this place at about 1:30 on a Friday afternoon. We made the trek out there as we heard they have the best Bloody Mary in town. We were greeted with, "Are you here to eat?" A bit taken aback I said we were just there for drinks, but one person in our group said she might like to eat something to which the waitress replied, "well if you're going to eat tell me now because we're about to stop serving food!" So we said no just drinks, but then were snapped at to "close the door, the air conditioner is on!" I could go on, because it didn't get any better but you get the gist. I was under the impression that this was a restaurant and as such would probably be making food from open to close, guess not. So if you plan to go there and eat you might want to call ahead and see if they are serving food today. Bottom line, we were made to feel extremely unwelcome from the moment we stepped in; it was obvious that she did NOT want us in there. We did order 4 Bloody Mary's which were fine but by no means anything special. Even if they were, I would never set foot in this place again. read more

We have been coming here for years and have always had a great meal. For this visit, we came for lunch and as always, the soup was great and the sandwiches were top notch. We brought the girls here because of a recommendation from a local gentleman. He said it was some of the best fried fish in the Northwoods, and he was right. When we got there, we had a bit of a wait so we took the girls in the big backyard and watched them play hide and seek while the wife and I had a Spotted Cow. I had the fish and detected a hint of either allspice or nutmeg in the batter which was a nice surprise. The batter was not heavy or greasy at all. The potato salad was ok and the cole slaw seemed store bought. The girls shared a burger that was the size of their plate. Overall, good little place with good fried fish. Having a vacation home in Eagle River for the last 20+ years, this is our go-to Friday night fish fry. The wait can be tough (I blame the Chicagoans), but the bar is clean and there's a nice outside patio to wait with a pitcher of beer. The fish itself has a great batter on it, not greasy at all. Get the baby walleye!! Flaky, flavorful, and a healthy portion. The cole slaw is unfortunately overly sweet, but the fries are pretty decent. We've gotten individual plates and also have been served family style. And though it's not all-you-can-eat, we've never left hungry. Though of course Friday is the traditional fish fry night, they do serve their delicious baby walleye (and other fish fry choices) every night - without the long wait for a table. read more

We've been trying to take our large family here for fish for years and were finally able to acquire enough seats for our group of 15 thanks to the fact they now serve their fish fry every night of the week. The bar service was slow while waiting for our tables but the host made such great effort to get out group seated together. The fish fry was amazing as was the half pound burger. The quality of the food has really gone downhill. I ordered a fish fry dinner, cheese curds and chicken tenders for carryout. I tried a bite in the car before I drove home. The cheese curds were the worst I've ever had, essentially greasy cheese blobs without batter, The fish was okay, the french fries were soggy (either from grease or being cold) and the coleslaw was lacking in flavor and didn't even have a sauce. The best part about the meal was the chicken tenders and they were mediocre. The cheese curds and chicken tenders were ordered ala carte rather than as a meal and each was $8. I won't be going back there and I would suggest any place else has got to have better cheese curds than Honey Bear Inn. I was so surprised to see so many people there on a Saturday afternoon. We've tried this place three times, attempting to give them the benefit of the doubt. Worst to note, the service. The first time it was 2 of us, and after being seated we were unattended to for 15-20 min. I got up and got us menus. Following our fish dinner, which was amazingly salty, I was forced to find my own water. The last time, which will truly be the last time, the service was horrendous. We were told the wait would be 1/2 hour, and it was, in fact, 1 hour and 20 min. Five of us were seated at a table for 4, and not comfortably - one of us literally had a corner to eat from. We asked for more water and the waitress plopped a pitcher on the table. We all ordered the fish fry, which is not all you care to eat, and a plate of fish and plate of fries was delivered. I think the fish should have been individually plated as I'm not sure we even got a fair share. Of course, the 1/2 piece of rye bread we were allotted filled our tummies, even if the teeny scoop of potato salad didn't. Many other restaurant choices in the area - in my opinion, skip this one. Had a great lunch with local family - You must go early at meal time and expect that when the tourist descend later in the day and don't get treated the way they want to be, this site will get some bad reviews. It is a local bar that serves really great food. They don't serve food all day long year round. Understand that. Be willing to accept that not every Northwoods bar is Denny's catering to your every whim. Personally, my Chef's salad was amazing - I took half home, my aunt's Lite side and uncle's sandwich looked wonderful. Do not let the place or the staff turn you off. Go early and go back.
