Food is tasty, but service is poor. Server and manager were completely unapologetic about not doing separate checks for a group, and told us to use their ATM so our group could pay in cash. Server was not courteous, and two people in our party only received their main course after everyone else at the table had finished their meal (the restaurant was not particularly busy, with a number of empty tables). A 20% tip and a 3% "restaurant fee" were automatically added to the bill. An overall disappointing evening. read more

Lovely log building that is very spacious inside with larger bar area and wide open dining room. The salad bar is decent and has the basic fixings. That was probably the highlight of the eating experience and I am glad I loaded up on my trip there. Ordered cheese curds for an appetizer which were outstanding. Mozzarella fried sprinkled with parm were unique and tasty. Main entrees. Meh. Ordered 2 chicken marsalas. The chicken seemed pre cooked and boiled. No evidence of breaded or pan fried.The sauce itself was a thick white gravy (not a thin brown which is typical) they seemed to drizzle some marsala on and added a small amount of mushrooms. flavor was bland. the chicken was borderline inedible. The highlight was the risotto. Whiskey shrimp dish. It was shrimp with a hint of whiskey and the same thick white gravy. It was ok. After thinking about it, we came to the conclusion they probably had a large crock of white gravy they put on the dishes and just added whiskey or marsala to whichever dish you ordered. Wasn't impressed at all. I really wish I took pictures. If there is a next time I would stick to steak although would temper my expectations based on this experience. read more

I wanted to love this place based on my childhood memories and the gorgeous log cabin design and construction...but: Food was mediocre at best. Our appetizer of bang bang shrimp came out not cooked to food safety levels. The appetizer was cold to the touch snd shrimp was grey on the inside. Bread was cold. Potatoes with my meal were incorrect and served as yellow potatoes vs the menu detailed baby red. The shrimp scampi pasta came out overcooked and was missing tomatoes with overdone snap peas. Considering it was the beginning of the weekend, I'd assume all ingredients were just prepped and freshly delivered , but everything felt outdated. Restaurant is short staffed and 6 tables were left dirty and covered in dirty plates throughout our entire meal. Make a reservation elsewhere. Hope to see the food quality improve based on the exterior presence of the establishment. read more

We waited an hour and 15 minutes for our food. When I asked about it I was told the head chef left for the day (2 hours after opening) and there were only sous chefs in the kitchen. I was also told they are still learning. When the food finally came it wasn't good. I never received an apology for the wait although the 2 appetizers were taken off the bill. For the price and expectations I can't imagine I would ever return. read more

Went to whitetail Inn for a special occasion (birthday). Two of us ordered the Fisherman's platter. 2 shrimp, 2 scallops, and 2 haddock cooked either fried or broiled. We both chose broiled. The new management doesn't seem to be enjoying themselves. She was hostessing and VERY unfriendly and rude. We stopped in on a Wednesday night and it wasn't overly busy, she was so angry that we didn't make reservations! The other owner was working behind the bar and ignored people that were waiting to place a drink order. After we were seated, it took at least 15 minutes before our server came. Once we placed our food order, it took a good 40 minutes. The food we received was like-warm at best. We told our server and they said the food warmer lights were turned off because they were almost done serving for the night It was hard to carry on a conversation because their entertainment was so loud! I doubt we'll be back after that experience. New owners don't seem to care. If they are going to "make it" - they better start being friendly and kind to their patrons!!! read more

I don't normally write long reviews, as most food experiences nowadays are fine at best, but this one is worth it, and if you are in the area, this is a must visit establishment! On top of an already amazing experience, (food, service, ambiance, the whole package), the thing I see most prominently is the staff trying new things. In my first experience here, I saw a manager taking notes on things her employees were saying about the menu and experience for guests, I saw a party encounter a small issue and be immediately greeted with warmth and understanding, and it was made right then and there, and I saw dedicated waitstaff encouraging menu choices including personal recommendations proving they were both familiar with the menu, and enjoyed it. These are pioneer benchmarks of a true fine dining establishment, but my last visit is the one that solidified a review. Bar: In the fifteen minutes or so we were waiting for a table, we sat down for drinks at the bar. This was a strong factor in sitting down to write this review. When we sat down we were immediately greeted by Don, who despite clearly being very busy, was very attentive and timely in getting our cocktails. All of the drinks were made exquisitely, and the beer, liquor, and wine selection was the best we've seen up north. Don made good conversation for a respectful amount of time in a way that made it clear his other guests felt the same way. We didn't see an empty drink on the entire bar of maybe 40 people, and there were 2 bartenders managing it all! Hostess/Ordering: After a bit, we were told we could go to our table, and we were brought over to a table preset to our party, and seated quickly. A waiter was over very quickly to take our food and drink orders, and the drinks we needed came very quickly, and he was knowledgeable about the menu and availability of items, being able to quickly tell us they were out of an ingredient, and even recommending a substitute, which is above and beyond! We were a party of 10, so we expected a wait for our food, but it was much less than anticipated for theamount of people in our party, and the amount of other guests. We ordered a variety of food, and all of it was out within the hour. Service: The young man from the phone, Lucas, was our waiter and he was absolutely wonderful. We witnessed him have a large party walk out, and he handled it with nothing but grace, and the other workers came together to make sure that the guests still left as satisfied as possible. He was very attentive to our needs and ensured that everything was fresh and quick. He was little over-apologetic for the evening, as we understood that the chaos was not his fault, but that's one very small quirk in the overall outstanding restaurant experience. I also privately informed him of an anniversary at our table and he managed to discreetly get the kitchen to prepare a dessert on the middle of a saturday night rush, (beautifully I might add), and get it to our table without them catching on, which is the mark of a true fine establishment, the willingness to go out of your way to be exemplary! Bravo to Lucas, and the rest of the waitstaff who clearly did the same! Food: All of the food was incredible, with no complaints in the entire party. Particular highlights were the house made french onion soup, ribeye, and caesar salad, which showed an immense amout of care put into a very simple dish. Food was also all hot, fresh, and clearly prepared at the same time! The entire kitchen staff should feel proud of their work. Entertainment/Ambiance Although it stopped for the evening during dinner, we were greeted by relaxing live piano music (which is a rarity nowadays!) which was certainly a perk! The restaurant has stunning window views, a large fireplace, (which was off during our visit, but I imagine is turned on in the wintertime), and plenty of knicknacks and memorabilia to look at while you wait for your food to arrive including, but not limited to: Antique menus from up to 80 years ago, special bottles, photos, and treasures from throughout the years of the inn, and wonderfully presented taxidermy. All of this is placed in a charming and rustic lodge, making for a truly fantastic experience! Cleanliness: Everything from the restrooms to the windows to the railings to the salad bar was sparkly clean, and it was clear that it stayed that way all the time. Management: The management here is CLEARLY top notch, as everything flowed like a well oiled machine, and fires were put out before they could even start. We saw all staff working as a team, and even overheard that one of the managers had gone back to work in the kitchen to ensure the food could come out as fast as possible! It is safe to say we WILL be back next time we come up north. Thank you so much to everyone at Whitetail for the perfect evening, and until we meet again! read more

Ate here last Friday with a group of 27. This group has previously eaten here without issue and were allowed to have separate checks. This time it was not allowed even though the woman who took the reservation confirmed that she never mentioned this. Despite our requests to allow this, the management was extremely arrogant and unrelenting with 1 man and 2 women doing nothing but telling us what they can't do. To make matters worse, we were charged a 20% gratuity when the service was sub par - for example 2 people never received their food until we were paying the bill! There were no apologies and no comping for this error. The water flasks were never refilled and no one asked us anything about how the dinners were , etc. It gets even better - we were charged an automatic 3% "Restaurant Charge" ! While the food was good and the building quite beautiful, not one person in our group will return, and believe me, the word of mouth by 27 people will hurt this establishment. By the way, it was Fish Fry Night and the place was mostly empty - obviously others have already discovered that bad service is really what is served here! read more

I'm so very disappointed in this restaurant but first I want to point out that the restaurant itself is so nice. It's a huge log cabin and as you enter you see an expansive room with large windows where you look out and see nature. There was a pianist that I thought I wouldn't like but it was lovely. The ambience was excellent. The bar area was large and welcoming, my waitress was friendly and efficient. I made online reservations which I absolutely love to do and I made a last minute reservation for 5:00 PM on a Friday. If you know the restaurants in the Northwoods you know they are usually swamped most of the time so I felt lucky to get it. For the 1.5 hours I was there the huge dining room was mostly empty seeing only about a dozen guests. They even turned the lights out towards the back leading me to believe they weren't very booked. I thought it was strange. I started out with the sesame seared tuna which was kind of hard and required a sharp knife to cut. It was only fair. The salad bar lettuce was a mix of every kind of lettuce and it was a little wilted. There was enough toppings but not too many options. The entree I ordered was the queen cut prime rib rare and sadly the outer crust was seasoned heavily and was really salty. The inside was so bland and flavorless, it came with au jus but I had to ask for horseradish hoping it would add some flavor which it did. A baked potato accompanied the dish and a kind of gross looking vegetable medley which I didn't even touch. Now, I know a "Tom Collin's" is an old fashioned drink but I love them. The bartender obviously didn't know how to make one. It was way too sweet and normally tastes a little citrusy. So that was also a bust. I did eat enough to be full and I took a little of everything home. Now for the worst part, I was sick all night so something was bad. So at this moment I'm pretty unhappy and the size-able bill totaled $99 with tip for one person. I had high hopes since I've heard so many good things but as far as I'm concerned it's a big fat NO. After 15 plus years of starting our fishing trip over the Memorial Day weekend with dinner at the Whitetail my son and I have decided that that is no longer a good destination. We were given a waitress who turned out to only have one table on our side of the room, after giving our order we got our salad and our beer and then the waitress disappeared. When we asked about our order we were told it would be right out--three different times. Finally I asked the ladies at the front desk one checked a nd said it would be out and didn't we realize they were busy. We knew they would be busy and didn't expect rapid service but neither did we expect to be ignored. Nor did we expect a bad attitude from the front desk. It is obvious that the inn has new management and has gone down hill. Be warned ! If you go there and they are the least bit busy your order may be lost or as we concluded it was never put in and they could not be honest about what happened. read more

Sorry for a bad review this place used to be amazing. Last night poor service and food quality was lacking. Ordered a medium rare Steak with onions and mushrooms and came out well done. Waitress never came by to see how food was after 10 minutes my wife went to somone to complain who said they would get her a new one 15 minutes later she brings another one without the onions and mushrooms was she suppose to slide them over cold from the first plate? Won't be going back there are better choices. read more

Easter brunch was fabulous! First off, staff was friendly and helpful from the hostess the moment you walked in to our server, Debbie (outstanding) to the carving station attendant and busboy! Food was hot and fresh and the selection was wonderful. We were never rushed and the line was rarely ever long. The food was promptly brought out when a tray was nearing empty. Well done! It's hard these days to find a restaurant that has the staff to get everything right and they exceed my expectations. Dined here with reservations on August 24. Sign in lobby stated "we are short staffed please be patient". We checked in at exactly our reservation time. We were told, "sorry, we can't seat you right now, someone is still at your table". Well, no worries, we went to the bar. Cocktails were good. We were seated 30 minutes later. We had a very pleasant server, DeDee. Food was great. Had the scallops. A tad overcooked, plate included some cauliflower mash, grilled tomato's, which were all really delicious. Wife had the ribeye Oscar style. Cooked to order, Oscar was a bit different than we are used to but delicious. Always a great setting with the massive log building. I gave this review a three. There is a reason a business cannot attract and retain top talent. Not sure what the reason is here, I can only speculate it starts at the top. The chef here is very talented. On a Saturday night, with a happy, well trained staff, and this chef and his staff, this place would be packed with patrons this time of year, and hard to get a table at. And I, for one, would love to see that happen! DeeDe really made this dining experience special. read more

We went here for our wedding anniversary. The hostess sat us at the bar promising to seat us for our 7:00 reservation, "in a few minutes." We spent the next half hour watching her amble around the half empty dining room. Finally, when I was about ready to eat my cocktail napkin, I returned to the hostess' stand where I seemed to surprise staff by voicing the desire to be sat and order food. I was then informed that, "oh yeah we can seat you now." Once we did sit down we waited another intolerably long period before being introduced to our waitress. For much the remainder of the evening we maintained a long distance relationship from across the dining room. When we did share in conversation she proved to be unknowledgeable about the food (she told me it was impossible to get my steak without the balsamic drizzle). I spent more time looking at two empty glasses than I ever recall doing at any meal in my life. She was verbally demeaning, treating my wife and I like middle schoolers on a date; as our parents looked on from a corner booth. Normally I would have taken it as a compliment that we looked so young as to be adolescent, but then you'd think she would question that the kiddos preferred scotch and vodka over Pepsi. I must mention that the food, once it finally found us, was very good. Which is a shame since the rest of the experience was so painful. Under normal circumstances it could have even justified the price. I do not, however, believe 2 people should be able to spend $200 on dinner and be rewarded with ignorant (bordering on rude) staff, accompanied by the regular weekday entertainer who is belting out Smash Mouth and Queen a la Karaoke far too loud; surrounded by lightly toasted golfers still wearing their polos and visors, or worse, jeans and a hoodie. Not that I'm hoping to dissuade you. If you actually enjoy overpaying for the privilege of being hungry, thirsty, and insulted: then Allez-vous! As the French say. It is distinctly possible that I simply misunderstand the golf crowd. The best thing we got out of the evening was something to laugh about while we try to pick from the roughly zero high end restaurants in the area next year. It was the least-earned 20% tip which has ever been extracted from me, and it is the last time we will ever give the Whitetail Inn our custom. read more

We had a party of 7 on 12/17/2021. First the service was top notch was and attentive. Second, the drinks were made perfect with not an over strong and not weak just right on how a mix drinks are to taste. Third the food was delicious the right temperature and taste was fresh. Our party had the baked salmon with rice pilaf which was delicious and will be back for that. Others ordered the Friday fish fry and it was moist, crisp with a excellent coating and not greasy Panko style, and fish was done and flakey. Chicken Parmesan had a wonderful flavor and the garlic mashed potatoes was also delicious. Price for the food and quality of food was right on point. The place had a wonderful ambiences. We came here for Easter brunch (sit down, not buffet) and the food was just okay, and the service rushed. No offer of water refills or coffee with dessert, didn't ask how we preferred the prime rib done, etc. If there had been more seated tables and people waiting, it may have been understandable, but as it was, for the price per person, it was rushed along and not worth the meal. read more

We have been coming here for years. The restaurant is very nicely decorated and the food is always excellent as is the service. Their new policy of charging credit card users an additional 3.5% is absolutely horrendous. We came in with a group of ten people and our bill was well over $350 and then to have an additional 3.5% added to the bill was crazy. Most places figure out the credit card fee into their own overhead and do not forward it onto the customer. We will not be returning due to this new policy. If for no other reason, you've gotta stop in for the atmosphere. Log buildings as gorgeous as the Whitetail Inn are few and far between--especially when you include their massive stone fireplace and world record deer mounts. It's the perfect place to take your family while on vacation! I've been ti several weddings at this location, and each one has been top notch. The golf course next doo as well as the giant pines surrounding the restaurant all serve as the perfect backdrop for photos, and there isn't a bigger or better bar in the north woods. There is also plenty of room to bring in a dance floor, the food is fantastic, and owners Jeff and Joy are extremely flexible and helpful in planning and executing the perfect wedding! read more

New and upscale dining in a lodge-like setting with very nice views of the golf course. Our food was very good: two of us ordered the pan-fried bluegill and really enjoyed the generous portion of well prepared fish. Two others ordered steak (a fillet Mignon and a sirloin fillet) and they were perfectly prepared and tasty. The tortilla soup was unexpectedly good - much spicier than than bland versions typically served in the Midwest. Service was friendly. The stuffed animals make the restaurant a memorable place for the kids. read more

Not sure where to begin! Jeff and Joy were better hosts than we could have ever imagined. Right from the beginning, they were accommodating and just wanted our day to be perfect for us. Any questions that we had throughout the year and a half engagement were answered in a days' time. They dealt with my panic of weather worry and every other issue that came to my mind, very calmly and always had a solution/answer. There weren't many "no's" to our requests, as they just kept reiterating that they can accommodate and it was our day. Joy was practically a wedding planner and amazing at what she does. From helping us choose the vendors and color linens, to helping us solve a BIG issue 2 days before the wedding with our flowers. The service the night of the wedding was spot on and they knew how to keep the night flowing. At the end of the night, the staff helped (did most of it) clean up our decorations and such, so it made for an easy and quick departure. We couldn't have asked for a better vendor and location for our wedding. We would recommend them to anyone wanting their wedding in the north woods. read more

Great ambience with the rustic up north wooden beams and decor. Service was friendly. We ordered the sampler platter for $12.95. It came with onion rings, cheese curds, chicken tenders. For that price, it barely was enough for 2 people. We also ordered the fish fry - breaded cod ($10.95) and perch ($13.95). Disappointing. Mostly all breading and was very salty. They fill the plate with thin French fries (seemed like the cheap frozen kind) and give you tiny cups of coleslaw, tartar sauce, and ketchup. My perch was so salty that I needed several cups of tartar sauce to drown out the saltiness. Wish they would give you more than a tablespoon of coleslaw which was probably the best part. I felt like I just ordered a take out fish fry from a local tavern and not a nice place like the Whitetail Inn. If you're looking for a nice place with a great north woods feel, this is the place but hopefully the rest of the menu is better than the fish fry. read more

Beautiful venue and friendly bar area but it stops there. The folks waiting in front of us were lavishly received and seated ...next we were greeted with "2?" When we were being seated in the far back near the kitchen I asked if there was a better table. She said the tables in front were reserved . She said we could wait in the bar for better seating and we said we would...she seemed annoyed and this interaction should have been a clue. It was late, after 7, so it could be expected there would be turnover and few after us. The food is overpriced and mediocre. We literally laughed at the cole slaw on the plate it was a condiment cup ... a tablespoon, one bite! The plate was filled with French fries ala McDonalds type and my perch, while not greasy, was so over cooked I had to use a knife to cut the fillets. At 14.95 I had hoped for something better....Probably they have cooks in the back versus places at their price point who have chefs. The service was not great, but Northwoods places often seem to go cheap on staff...no bus service, no water refill, saw our waitress when we were done. Places don't seem to adjust to when college starts and they loose summer staff (if they ever had them). We've tried it twice, old owners/new owners, too many other terrific choices nearby...it looks good but doesn't deliver. read more
