Ash's is a food gem in the north woods of Wisconsin. This is an area where many restaurants are bar first and restaurant second. I get here rarely because I don't live here, but have a summer cottage in the area. Let me break down my dinner tonight for you below, and you can decide if you want to try it for yourself. Service - Spot on. Attentive, but not too attentive and very friendly. Appetizer - Truffle fries. Some people like truffle, some people hate truffle. Regardless of that, the fries were cooked to perfection! I cannot think of another french fry I've had that was better than these. Salad - Rarely do I eat all of my house salad, because honestly, they usually suck. This salad was fresh with a light lemon vinaigrette. I cleaned the plate. Bread - Great bread. I don't know if they make it in house, but the garlic butter that came with it was fantastic as well. Mains: Mine - Veal Schnitzel. The dish came with two large veal cutlets, broccolini, and a mountain of garlic mashed potatoes. I could only finish one of the cutlets. There was a dijonnaise drizzled across the plate which was a welcome acid to balance out the richness of the veal. broccolini is always good, and the potatoes were really good. My daughter(an adult) - Boneless braised short ribs in a red wine gravy. I have had this previously and it was great. I sampled some of her dinner and confirmed that it is still very tasty. It taste like someone had cooked the ribs with good seasoning for a long time. The sides were the same as mine, but when you have a couple solid sides, why bother with other randoms. Dessert - We shared a Strawberry creme brulee. I have no words to describe how good this is. Get it. read more

Wow!! What an awesome find thanks to the Supper Club coupon book! We drove 90 minutes each way to experience this awesome restaurant! Service was great and the food was amazing! We had the goat cheese balls as an appetizer...wow!! It was awesome! My tenderloin was very tasty and the mashed potatoes and broccolini was very good! Then, dessert!! Visited with a group of 10. They were very accommodating and friendly. Drinks at the bar were well made. Menu is modern American. Everything was delicious. They were able to accommodate dietary restrictions (gluten). Atmosphere was casual however still a good special dinner location. Highly recommended. read more

I will never go here. I called in to see if they could accommodate my group of ten and the lady that answered the phone laughed at me and said yeah no we can't. I was shocked. I said well thanks for laughing at me, I was just asking a question. The phone disconnected, I called back and asked for a manager and told her what happened and that it was unprofessional and she said well I'm sorry you feel that way. That's just awful. read more

It was my partner's birthday and based on previous meals at your restaurant, we were looking forward to celebrating it there. We understand that you only had 1 server. She was ok, wasn't great. The food was awful. It wss a disappointing experience that left a bitter taste in our mouths. I wanted to send it back multiple times, my partner said not to bother because he wanted to try to enjoy his birthday with minimal fuss/issues. The cheese plate (aka grilled cheese with balsamic) was burnt. Not just a little burnt, but black on the one side. The pickled onions were not pickled long enough. They were not soft or tart. They had no tang. They tasted like red onions with a slight hint of sweetness. The jambalaya was burnt. It also had no flavor or heat. Jambalaya is supposed to have depths of flavor with Cajun or Creole influences. It was burnt black (not blackened. Burnt) The rice had a bitter/burnt/charred taste. It was soggy and over cooked. I have attached pictures of the jambalaya... There are areas of black/ burnt throughout the dish. The shrimp and rice was disappointing. The rice was burnt. It had a bitter/burnt/charred taste. It was also soggy and over cooked. I'm assuming your chef used the same pot of rice for all the dishes, thus why both our dishes had burnt rice. The shrimp were overcooked and chewy. The cauliflower was undercooked. It was hard (too hard to break apart with a fork), and had a raw/nutty taste. By the time my partner was half way through his meal, he had drank all his soda and water. He was never offered a refill. I'm horrifed that your chef knew that all this food was burnt, yet still sent it out to the customer. There's clearly a complete lack of quality control, and no one seems to be checking what is coming out of the kitchen. The hostess brought our entrees to us. The burnt jambalaya was obvious, yet she still served it to us. We chose to go elsewhere for dessert. My partner said that it was the worst meal he has had in this area (and that says a lot considering that most restaurants here aren't great). read more

I heard that this was a nice local place, to get a good steak. I ordered the 20 ounce ribeye was well-cooked, but I found it to be a bit tough. While it certainly was palatable, at $42 I expected more. This place is extremely popular though, with tons of great reviews, so perhaps my steak this night was an aberration. If you don't like garlic, this may not be the place for you. The Caesar salad I had as a side was very garlicky (and yes I know garlic is in the dressing). They serve a wonderful home-made bread, which comes with garlic butter. Finally, the steak is topped with herb garlic butter and comes with garlic mashed potatoes. I like garlic as much as the next person, but found it all a bit much, and took the lump of garlic butter off of the steak. My server was very friendly and attentive, and seemed to know many of the patrons. Overall, it was a good experience, although I might try the local fish next time. read more

Excellent restaurant outside of Iron Mountain! The menu includes a variety of steaks, chicken, and seafood. I had the seafood special, ahi tuna over rice with a sauce. It was a good portion size and tasted great. My only complaint- the sauces, appetizers and meals are all rich and heavy and there were no healthy vegetable or light meal options (the sauce on the tuna was rich too). Highly recommend! read more

My husband and I came here for our anniversary and enjoyed our meal immensely. We sat at the bar for a drink and an order of the truffle fries. They were amazing, not at all soggy and great flavor. We were seated for dinner and ordered the perch and the veal. First unlike another reviewer the perch was certainly not "fish sticks". They were fresh lake perch with excellent flavor. The garlic mashed potatoes were out of this world. We honestly couldn't think of a time when we've had better (Chicago, Vegas, etc). I opted for the risotto with my veal and while I can say the potatoes and risotto stole the show my veal was alright. read more

My husband and I are visiting from illinois and decided to come here because of the reviews. I must say, we had a great experience! The service was phenomenal, the food was absolutely amazing, and the ambiance was wonderful too. There were several deer in the parking lot that kept walking past our window and the server said they feed them the scraps from the kitchen which I thought was just so cute of a restaurant to do. We just enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Ashes. I had the Chilean sea bass ( special). It was perfectly seasoned and cooked. My husband had the 8oz filet med rare which was also cooked perfectly. The chef is not shy with the seasoning but it was delicious. We also had the shrimp cocktail which was very good. The shrimp were well cooked and nicely seasoned. We also had the banana bread pudding with salted caramel ice cream. The ice cream (house made) was so good I had several bites ( lactose intolerant so I rarely find it worth my while to eat it). What a hidden treasure! Four of us went there for dinner and we all had fabulous meals with amazing service! Excellent well made cocktails, the goat cheese ball appetizer was delicious as were the entrees, chicken marsala, mushroom fettuccine, the hangar steak special. We also got the seasonal roasted apple salad which was so good. Our friends were celebrating their anniversary and were comped their choice of dessert, so we all got to taste the wonderful bread pudding. I would also like to clarify what actually happened. Yes you stopped me at the door and asked me if there was something wrong with the service, I stated we were a bit upset that we had to wait an hr to be seated when our reservation was at 7pm ( which is why people make reservations) so they do not have to wait for a table. Your assumptions of thinking we were all fine because we were at the bar drinking is premature and your opinion at best. You proceeded to seat us at two different tables. You knew of this reservation days in advance to come up with a proper way to seat your customers. I know how this works I myself have worked in the food industry for many years and have always accommodated to make sure our customers have the best experience. Unfortunately this did not happen here. Your perch is nonetheless than fish sticks on a plate. My steak was hard and burnt on the outside so I opt to only eat the inside of my steak. My shrimp still had the poop sack inside of it the chicken strips my 5 year old had were burnt and dry as well. You are correct I did not go into detail on the food because my family was in the car waiting for me. Also. With our bill being $135 and our bar bill being $35 how do you know what my finances are? So for you to rudely tell me that my tip was uncalled for was premature on your end, how do you know that wasn't all I could afford. Shame on you! Your food is Mediocre at best and yes very disappointed in the service, preferable of you, our waitress did a great job considering she was only following the rules of her very little boss.
