The ambiance and staff were great. But the food well. My pasta was so overcooked it was like mush. The meat sauce had a nice flavor but hardly any meat in it. The meatball was ok, the sausage less so. The spumoni was excellent, full of pistachios. Several in every bite. Went back a few days later for spumoni only. We got gnocchi and noodles with meat sauce as well as the chicken. These came with salad, breadsticks, and spaghetti. Lots of reviews talked about their pasta is home made, you can definitely tell by the texture and flavor! The noodles and the gnocchi were very chewy and soft, and carried the sauce flavor very well. I particularly enjoyed the gnocchi: just the right balance of flavors and chewiness! We were also pleasantly surprised by how juicy, tender, and well seasoned the chicken was. Fall off the bone tender! Overall a solid meal and unexpected find! Special shout out to the sesame sticks inside the salad, they added a nice crunch and burst of flavor to the salad. I have not been to Alice's in a long time and it is exactly how I remembered it. The salad, bread and breadsticks to start was really good. You can tell the pasta is homemade. I had high hopes for this place after it was recommended by a friend. The restaurant interior is a bit dated but, it is clean. The portions are good but the food isn't great. The salad was limp, the brushetta was odd, it was more like a chunky pasta sauce. The pasta was disappointing, a jar of store bought pasta sauce is better than theirs. An absolutely wonder Italian supper club in a town that provides little but fried food (always good) and pizza (also good). Excellent service (seriously - it was stellar), clever bar tender and absolutely everything we had was home made (sauce, pasta....). The gnocchi and ravioli were awesome....and their take on spinach artichoke dip is clever as well as tasty. On the subject of the sauce, saw another review of Alice's sauce that complained it was too thin. Real marinara is generally thinner than the stuff that comes out of a jar, and a good chef puts a little pasta water in at the end after they've added the pasta to the sauce. If you want jarred sauce - not your place, but if you want a sauce that's home made, exceptionally well seasoned, and extraordinarily flavorful - Alice's may be your go to. read more

After being in town for about 3 months, we finally decided to give this place a try. We won't be back. Good things first, we were seated quickly, the service was good & the waitress was polite. I had the "Saturday Special Chicken Breast Valdostanna" which was two small chicken breasts pounded flat, covered in cheese and mushrooms. Not bad, but definitely not $22 worth of chicken. Partner ordered the porterhouse and the waitress recommended a different cut. He ordered his steak medium rare but it came medium well. Thank goodness he didn't order the more expensive cut because they would have ruined it. Ok (good service) but mediocre food. I had " fettuccine ala carbonara". It wasn't fettuccine. And the sauce wasn't carbonara. Carbonara should be parmesan, egg, and guanciale/pancetta/bacon. Instead it had an overwhelming amount of bacon, plus onion, egg, and butter. The servings are huge; I got a half order and took half of it home. I tasted my friend's gnocchi and it was very gummy and overloaded with sauce. I was surprised that they don't have Caesar salad, although it's not from Italy. Generally most Italian restaurants offer fresh ground pepper and/or fresh grated Parmesan at the table, but not here. I was pleasantly surprised that they are offered a Barbaresco, but their other Italian choices were just Lambrusco or Chianti. Interestingly, the Barbaresco was served at room temperature, but that's a pretty minor complaint. On the other hand, it might be the best Italian option in the UP, but restaurant choices are pretty limited. read more

I love this restaurant. Whenever we go to cabin this is a must. The pasta is homemade. The staff are just so friendly. I love there spaghetti and meatballs or lasagna. My mom loves the chicken. My wife the gnocchi. Getting a old fashion or martini is awesome. My daughter Jillian is always greeted by name by Jill and she just eats it up. She gets a popsicle for dessert and one time got to go into the kitchen with Jill to get one and just loved it. This is the kind of place that is a warm blanket on a cold night. From out of town and we decided to try Alice's out, food was okay at best, sauce is super watery, noodles were decent but we waited 20 minutes or longer after we ate to just get a check or even be checked on again. On top of that the day after they charged us an extra $10 on the tip that we didn't include! Scummy trying to get away with charging you extra money, the bill didn't say anything about gratuity! This place is a gem in the wilderness. Old fashioned service and food; pasta not "home-made" whatever that means, but made on premises in the kitchen of the place, including their first-rate ravioli, both the meat and cheese versions. As good as you'll find, better than most places in Italy I've been to. As is the bread, esp. the fantastic garlicky bread sticks. For some 40 or so years, I've pretty much stuck to their world-class pork chop {with Xtra garlic, of course}, something not matched on either coast (Italian restaurants or otherwise) [forget Chicago] or in the better places in London, Milano, South of France, HK & Sing., to name a few. Their basic marinara sauce is excellent, well-balanced and garlic-neutral, reflecting the taste of the local community customers. The kitchen has an endless supply of aglio, so on the rare occasion I don't order the p-chop, I order the marinara supercharged. Wonderful ! [Italian restaurants are _s u p p o s e d_ to be heavy garlic ? You're listening to amateurs when you hear that.] Portions are generous, so much that I can't comment on desserts (Aunt Alice took her recipe for zuppa inglese with her, and that was a reason to force dessert.) My family has a lake home nearby and we have been coming here for years, my family was close with Alice before she passed and you could argue the restaurant used to be better but I was there last week and the food was still delicious. Prices are high but food is pretty good still. Sad they have done away with grilled shrimp on Friday's. Everything is still fairly good here. read more

Needless to say, I was very under impressed. I for-went dinner at Zippidy-Duda's, a tried and true favorite of mine, for Alice's because 1) I clearly like trying new places and 2) Yelpers gave it a 4.5 average from 5 reviews. I unfortunately did not have a 5-start experience. As with many of my reviews, I begin reviewing/taking notes of places on the spot via the iPhone Yelp app (then come back to edit before posting), so take note that the bad experience at the end did not cloud my notes from earlier. From the outside, driving West down Adams, you'll see Alice's from 4th and Adams, and at first you might think it looks closed. But then you drive past the parking lot and you realize how hopping it really is. "This place must be really good," I had beamed excitedly to Chad. The decor is nice with a completely red and black theme, and romantic lighting. Dark red walls, black table clothes, red and black window curtains, and red chairs with black brims. Reminds me a lot of Minneapolis' "Hell's Kitchen" minus the live music and artsy art. The art here is a mix of historical portraits and gaudy signs. First up on the dinner docket was the bread basket, which included what tasted like microwaved buns and a soggy onion bread thing; though the fried garlic breadsticks (think cookie-like sticks) were quite tasty. Basket was served with cold butter - how do you spread it?? And the menu let you know that it's $1.50 for another basket. On my first visits to any establishment, I go with my tried and true method of asking our waitress for menu selections (even if the menu was only two pages). She suggested the Italian's Delight, and that it was big enough to share. So we did. We were delightfully surprised when both of us got the option of a soup or salad. We took both. The soup was a chicken lemon grass thing... the soup itself was decent but the noodles were weak and the chicken looked like spam and tasted odd. The salad was essentially lettuce and sesame nuts, with one slice of cucumber, one slice of a wedge of tomato, and a slice of beet. I'm pretty sure when we asked what was in the salad, she had used the plural versions of each vegetable. Our dinner, the Italian Delight, was a triad of gnocchi, ravioli, and noodles in a red sauce with one meatball and one large italian sausage. I'm seeing a theme of one here; though in this case it wasn't a problem as the protein were a healthy portion. A few bites in, I decided the gnocchi was the best, followed by noodles and last, the ravioli, which tasted gritty like it was not quite properly re-warmed. Then Chad made a face and pulled out a white hair from his mouth after the first bite of ravioli. We looked at each other, then at our own heads... Chad's hair is brown and I've got black hair - it wasn't ours. We flagged down the lady in charge, who didn't say much besides take the plate to the kitchen. A few minutes later, our waitress came and asked if I wanted to box my portions, to which I responded with NO (duh?), and she left us our bill. In response to the hair, we got $5 off the $18 dish. $5? Really? We took two bites... Am I asking too much for expecting that portion to be comped? Or at least an apology? I would have expected, in the very least, to have meal replaced, or better, have it comped, and at most, the entire bill comped (the only other item we had was a $6.50 mushroom appetizer). On top of this, there was apparently a plate split of $4.75 (entirely unbeknownst to us... and I'm pretty sure was not on the menu). So much for being excited that Chad and I both got a starter plate. Overall, the experience was poor, from the food itself to the service. I was throughly disappointed. We tried Alice's for the first time last night. It was overall a good experience. The place itself is super clean and has a relaxing, supper club vibe to it. The whole wait staff was super friendly and pleasant. And the food is good. The noodles are homemade and delicious. The menu is not overly huge but it does have some awesome options. The portions of food are also very filling and large. It is a little on the pricey side but it is totally worth it. I would suggest paying in cash though because a card has a % added to it. If you are looking for a good place to dine at, definitely stop here. You will not be disappointed! read more

I was extremely disappointed - I ordered the meat ravioli which somehow tasted extremely dry. The meat on the inside of the raviolis tasted as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp for over a day, and I couldn't finish the food. The bruschetta, while not bad tasting, could hardly qualify as bruschetta but instead was toast and marinara sauce. It was extremely overpriced for food that tasted as if it was frozen, and to top it all off they charged us a lot extra for paying with credit card instead of cash. read more

I always look forward to our time at Alice's! My wife and I often like to stop by after work for a great old fashioned and their mozzarella bites (a super tasty app) before we head home. The other night, we were worn out and decided to stay for dinner - "let the professionals cook for us" as we say. What a GREAT experience! Attentive (but not "in your face") service, a good, reasonably priced bottle of tasty wine and their homemade bread. So good! I had their pork chop - super thick (so thick that the waitress had to tell us it would take a little longer - fine by us) and perfectly seasoned and cooked - just melted in your mouth and it really tastes like a special treat, not just a run of the mill chop. My wife had a small lasagna (the full size portions are huge!) and loved it. So much better with house-made pasta and sauce! Sorry but we had a really bad meal. We should have said something but isn't that the waitresses job? My husband just did not like the spaghetti he ordered and only literally took one bite. We had heard of Alice's from many people and decided to make the trip to Iron River and check it out. Alice's is truly one of those classic Northwoods supper clubs with Italian flare. You nearly fall into a seizure as you walk in and are bombarded by the immensely red....well..EVERYTHING!! The walls, carpet, bar, tables...it's all red. Pictures of Alice's grandson's decked out in basketball attire and graduation uniforms cover the walls and table nearest the bar. I knew we were in for a treat. The menu states all pasta's are handmade daily. We both immediately knew we had to have the pasta. I ordered the "noodles" with meatballs. Let's get something straight, you can't fake something like fresh pasta and Alice's is definitely the real deal! A huge pile of big, thick egg noodles arrived with two well-sized meatballs. The pasta was rich and flavorful. The sauce was San Marzano-based with a bright color and tart, zippy acidity. The meatballs were fantastic and somewhat light in texture but rich in flavor. As well, all pastas come with soup/salad and fresh bread. Along with my pasta, I also had several Whiskey Manhattans, which were perfectly made...even being a little stiff!!! We got the bill and were nearly floored....$40 for two people, including drinks! This is the kind of place that I only dream of frequently here in Chicago! It's really tough to find a spot to get fresh pasta without blowing your paycheck.
