This has to be the most friendly place in WI. Not just the staff but the customers too. When we got there they had been slammed. The waiter who took our order mentioned that he was one of the chefs but had to help out front because they got swamped. I eat gluten free and there wasn't much on the menu I could eat so I asked for a turkey burger without the bun and they asked if I wanted it between lettuce leaves. It was delicious with onion and tomato. I had a side of vegetables also. My husband had chicken wings which he said were good. They were the special for the day. He said he wasn't offered any sauces and they were just plain deep fried chicken wigs which were good, just nothing special. It was a busy place on a Su day afternoon. Great Swedish pancakes - we got them with strawberries. Eggs benedict was solid as well (hashbrowns are offered with onions as option). Housemade muffins are great! For dessert, we went with the hot fudge cake - chocolate muffin with whipped cream, ice cream, and plenty of hot fudge. (if that's too sweet, apple pie would have been our second choice or the chocolate muffin alone). Best service we had at any restaurant in the UP or northern WI. Located along the main strip of shops on US2-141 in downtown Florence, this diner has a timeless feel to it. Very popular and crowded at breakfast, we decided to come here for a late lunch on two separate trips coming up north. When we came for lunch, it wasn't as packed, with only a large group of motorcycle riders who came for lunch too. However, it does not embody the "biker establishment" stereotype. It's a bright place with friendly people. A high school-aged girl served our table and she was polite and friendly to us. Barb's Cafe has a long counter with stools and separate booths in the restaurant. I tried one of their burger and it was excellent and nicely topped, nothing wimpy about it. My wife picked Swedish chocolate chip pancakes with powdered sugar on top. Excellent too. There was so much that we had leftovers for the next day's breakfast. My kids chose not to be adventurous and went for the safe choice of mac and cheese, which is the usual Kraft variety from the look of it. They weren't disappointed either. Prices are very reasonable. I also got a jug of maple syrup they sell at the counter. For the price, you'd pay about double that for the same syrup in Chicago. They also sell eggs from local farms at the counter too. The food and staff were great. As a vegetarian, I've eaten many subpar veggie burgers but this one was excellent and the onion rings were very good too. My dining companions loved their BLT and side salad. One of them has mentioned the hot chocolate that they had there since our lunch there as one of the best they ever had, and she drinks a lot of hot chocolates. Barb's cafe is your typical small town restaurant. Breakfast has always been reasonble and decent. For a small seating area, there are usually enough waitresses. I do find that the second section in the back is not advertised and those walking in seeing a full house do not know it's back there and leave. For those late morning arrivals, you may not get a seat during the busy times (ie. hunting season, etc.). So get up earlier or go for lunch. I do find the lack of hair nets on kitchen staff and cleanup staff a bit disconcerning. Items coming from the kitchen are put on a counter in que for the waitress and all the girls have long hair. read more

Barb's Cafe is a great place to eat. We stopped here for breakfast and it was a really good breakfast. The homemade muffins are the best. They are warm when they come out and they are fresh. The farmer's omelette is delicious! It fills a person up. Also with omelettes, there was a choice of a muffin, toast or pancakes. There is not a chance you would go away hungry. Also the waiting staff is super nice! They make you feel comfortable and they create a super friendly atmosphere! Trisha was our server and ran the whole place, while hunters were waiting to be seated. Make sure you get a cinnamon roll ! Chicken florentine omlete is super tasty as well.
