This is my homebase, period. We live in a town with loads of options, but DRC predates them all. In fact, when Starbucks came to town a couple decades ago the owner at the time was contracted to train their baristas. We're on to a new owner (as of a few years ago) and though there have been some shifts, it's still the place to go for old school coffee lovers. It's true you're only going to regularly find chocolate and homemade vanilla for flavors (there are others seasonally or as the amazing staff experiments, but there's only 2 constants), but the focus at Dead River COFFEE is exactly that, the coffee. One of the goals at the ownership switch was to consistently provide the best espresso shot in town. Now, there is definitely going to be some subjectivity on the taste, but technique-wise they've got it down. Right to weighing out the dry grounds to ensure consistency, and though it does slightly vary from barista to barista (as all drinks do) its consistently solid (yes, I drink them straight). My, near, daily order is a black cup of the roast of the day and a shot of espresso on the side. That black cup of coffee most days is a low acidity, mid to lower altitude medium to dark roast. However, some days it's their very fruity Ethopian Sidamo (higher altitude higher acidity). On the menu tradition is the game. Some of the drinks you know at corporate coffee places may have the same name as a traditional drink but ARE NOT said drink (see: Machiatto). If I'm not getting my order, I tend to like to see how the baristas are at their Mocha Latte's. I know it's always going to be good, but this shop has produced award winning baristas in the past and when someone is on that level there is definitely a difference. In the end, DRC is a coffeeshop for anyone that may not appeal to everyone. However, to those that it hits for will fall in love and find themselves at the same coffee shop daily in a small town with a coffee shop per capita that makes Seattle look decaffeinated (Yes, they have that too, even if according to Futurama it makes one a "pervert"). read more

We were greeted right away with a friendly hello! After careful deliberation, I got a chai tea latte with ginger and a glazed donut and my dad got the Dead River pour over. The pour over took a few minutes (as expected) and he was very impressed with it. My latte was unique, it reminded me of mulling spices and I would definitely get it again. Next time though I am going to try the Bea Bomb, which is a mixture of espresso/lemonade. Somebody in the shop got it iced and was raving about it. A sweet little spot for real coffee! The decor is eclectic and cozy. They have a station set up roasting and grinding beans and it is so cool to watch. Smells like coffee heaven in here! Syrup is home made and you can purchase whole beans for home use. A few spots to sit at tables and a little bar area looking out into the street through a nice big window. Coffee was delicious. There are home made treats as well but none for us this morning as we are prepping for the marathon coming up. Must go and experience! read more

Really weird experience. Totally disorganized and super slow service. Came here with my boyfriend and it took 20 minutes to get a cup of coffee, a latte and a shot of espresso. The cashier didn't understand what drip coffee meant, which seems like a basic coffee concept. Totally fine if she didn't understand but she should have asked us for clarification rather than puttering around for 10 minutes and then asking her boss to ask us what we wanted. While we were waiting we were both really uncomfortable because there was no where to sit because a few people were very spread out among the few tables they have. They have a coffee roaster right in the cafe so get ready to smell coffee roasting. And actually coffee just smells like burning popcorn when it's roasted so the place really didn't smell good. The woman who was roasting the coffee was also breastfeeding at the same time. Just a weird thing to do while working in public but maybe that's just me. When our coffees were finally ready, she handed me my latte with the lid off and placed the lid right in a spill of old coffee. I went to grab a spoon and they were all dirty even though they were in the clean cup. So I had a gross lid and no way to stir my sugar in... The coffee wasn't even that good either. Tasty and delicious, had to get a pound of it and the Yirgacheffe to take home with me. Pretty solid independent coffee shop. I love that they roast their own beans, they have free wifi, and people were pretty friendly. The downside is it's small and kind of noisy from the roasting. The regular drip coffee was just ok, didn't get a chance to try any espresso drinks. read more

I have been here a few times but only ordered once. Not being a coffee drinker I rarely find myself in the quaint little coffee shops around town even though I love their atmospheres. I came in here on a frigid day for a hot cocoa to warm up for a bit. It has a very homey feel to it. When we came in, the employee was playing cards at a table with a group of friends but promptly came to the counter to take our order. The hot chocolate was delicious, and fairly priced. I wouldn't return on a regular basis, but that's just me, not because of anything about the establishment. I had a nice experience and would recommend it to my coffee drinking friends. read more

Coffee Mecca! This is an incredible cafe with some of the finest coffee and espresso that I've had. It's a unique, authentic little shop that is overloaded with interesting coffee paraphernalia. I stopped in with my wife today and had two really great double espressos, along with a very fine drip coffee to go. The drip coffee was also great, and the barista was really well trained with the coffee drinks. My wife had a nice cappuccino. While I was there, a hipster couple stopped in and ordered iced aeropresses. It pretty much blew my mind to hear that they offered that level of variety. The owner is one serious coffee geek and has obviously built the business around that love of coffee culture. They roast every other day and play jazz in the shop, which has big windows looking out to a nice view of Marquette. This isn't just the best cafe in Marquette, it's one of the best cafes in the country. I always stop in to cafes when I'm traveling, and am almost always disappointed. Dead River is quite the exception. I only wish that we had something similar to this in Madison. I'll definitely be looking forward to Dead River coffee whenever I pass through Marquette. They need to add "cafe" to their name though for us outsiders, because right now it doesn't turn up on right away on yelp and GPS searches. "I'll take an Expresso mocachino with unicorn blood and sparkles" or anything on part with that statement are lines you'll never hear me say . Theo is the sort of guy who really knows how to run a business. He has a "spare no expense" attitutde when it comes to stocking quality, and personally oversees all roasting operations in house. The staff are hip, listen to good music, and know how to pull a shot of espresso. There is a roating selections of coffees from all over the world, each delicious and special in its own way. Been rebrewing Folger's in your stained white drip maker? That's okay, run down to Dead River and get learned in proper coffee buying, preparing and enjoying. They will even make you a cup so you know what you're getting into. No fu-fu yuppiepowersuit beverages here, cappucinos, mochas, espressos and the occasional "specialty drink" (like the Bea-Bomb, a mix of espresso and lemonade!)"It's coffee flavored" and that's the way they think it ought to be. You can add sugar to anything to make it sweet, but drink your coffee BLACK and drink/buy/enjoy it from Dead River, because there really is no where else like it around. read more
