The food here was great and the prices were definitely fair, but the best part of our dining experience was the service provided by two of the waitstaff - Marshall and Saara. We were mostly served by Marshall, who was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. We were also assisted by Saara, who also gave us fantastic service. We live just below the Bridge (I love that you don't need to say what bridge in Michigan), so won't be coming up here every week or month, but when next we do visit, we will definitely be stopping here a couple of times. I was near Crystal Falls, Michigan on vacation and planned to take a day trip to Pictured Rocks with my mother. I researched a place to stop approximately midway and found Negaunee, and was attracted to the name Midtown Bakery and Cafe. I was looking for some place that might have a quick breakfast and coffee menu. The place is in the downtown area of Negaunee. It is a small store, with limited seating and display cases, and on the Wednesday we visited it was busy with obviously local patrons. When we walked in the first person greeted us and said, "we have breakfast items but if you are looking for eggs, meat and a large breakfast we can recommend some other places close by." I assumed it is a regular question. We said we were looking for a quick meal and the options listed on the menu chalkboard were fine. My mother had a breakfast bagel and I asked for a double portion of biscuits and gravy. My mom enjoyed her sandwich and it was filling enough that she took a part of it with her. I was able to finish mine and it stayed with me until we could get to dinner later that afternoon. The gravy was definitely from a mix, and the bagel sandwich has a "baked egg" on it. I am not sure what prevents them from having a fried or scrambled egg on it. The service was a little slower than I expected, since there were only a dozen or so customers but I counted 4-5 employees. It was hard to determine which person was responsible for which duties. Two people seemed to take our order and then a third delivered the food. It was pleasant enough, and it fit our plans, but it felt like the Cafe atmosphere was an afterthought. read more

I love Midtown for desserts and lunches. When my daughter graduated from high school, I stopped in and told Mary Beth my plan for a pink dessert table and she made it happen! When my parents had their 50th, we got a lemon cake with raspberry filling. It was so delicious! My mom normally pushes food on all of us, but not this cake! She took the small piece that was remaining home for herself. It's got a daily special for lunch and the soups, salads and sandwiches are all yummy. Stop in for lunch or grab food and dessert to go! Sad and incredibly over priced! These previous reviews must be by the owners or family members. I literally left hungry. The 1/2 sandwich and macaroni salad couldn't satisfy a toddler. I firmly believe the economy is to blame but the offering was way over priced at $13!! Look at the pictures if you feel I'm stacking the deck here! When in the North Central U.P., make a trek to Negaunee and the Midtown Bakery. You will be treated to warm, genuine friendliness and more deliciousness than your diet can probably handle. My Three-Cheese Panini, custom made with my cheese choices, was perfectly grilled on Sourdough and pleased my picky palette with every bite. Their Cole Slaw is fresh, made-on-site and made me want more. I hesitate to mention the Banana Cake, for fear that next time I stop by it may be all gone. What a FAB FIND! This cake would be a major HIT at any fine bakery across the U.P., Michigan or the entire Lower 48 (plus all ten Provinces and three Territories to the North). In other words, this cake is worthy of Trans-Continental consideration. No slight intended to the Yooper Pasty, but Midtown Bakery is many notches up the culinary ladder. I'm never disappointed with this quaint, hometown antique shop and cafe. The food is unique and good and worth the little extra price you'll pay. I always have the fresh made soup of the day...always hearty and very tasty. Yesterday I tried the chicken Peppadew panini and I'm still dreaming about it! The only menu drawback is the turkey for any sandwich is smoked and I'm not a fan of smoked turkey (my personal taste so no star is detracted) so I always opt for chicken selections. It is a bakery after all so trying one of their luscious bakery selections is a must. This place is not to be missed! Best ginger snaps ever!!! Every time I come back up north to visit family we always stop into Midtown. The decor is very cute and the atmosphere is comfortable. You instantly feel like you are at home. They are very kind and prompt and even though they are extremely busy you would never know because the service never lacks. The cheesecakes, cookies etc are fantastic but the ginger snaps take the cake! They are super thin, chewy and they taste like little discs of heaven. The sandwiches are yummy too! This is an amazing oasis of color and comfort - unexpected in the middle of downtown Negaunee! I was visiting from out of town with friends, and was so happy to find it. My friend was lucky enough to get a pumpkin parfait (a seasonal delight), and I opted for a delicious raspberry bar. Service is friendly and fast.
