If you know about Homeroom you know them for their Mac & cheese. The few times I've had the Mac & cheese, it's been fine--my husband really likes it, I think it is ok. We went to the Berkeley location recently because we were in the neighborhood and after a quick check online to see that they had salads, I said sure. One of the workers there recommended the Cobb salad and wow, I've rarely been so impressed by a salad. It was huge! Packed with lots of veg, feta cheese, and chicken--it was more than a meal. The base of the mac and cheese is pretty good but not great. This was the disappointment. The texture was fine, and it was all cooked correctly, but the flavor? I have had tastier cheeses and better spices elsewhere. I can do better at home. I have done better at home. The mac game needs to be improved. The short rib mac had sriracha, and it just tasted like sriracha. The short ribs shredded on top were a bit sweet but juicy and did add some to the overall taste, but not much. The jalapeno mac tasted, frankly, a lot like liquid nachos at an As game. That's not exactly a bad flavor, but it's not something I want to eat for a full dish. The green beans were way over-peppered. The brussels sprouts were just fine, the best part of the meal. The service was OK. Guy was a bit... energetic. Sat us next to another party when there were plenty of open tables. Food came fast. Frankly, a lot is done right, but if you're a mac n cheese place, your mac n cheese better be fantastic. It isn't. This spot is good. We tried the buffalo chicken macaroni and the garlicky bacon one. We also got a kids Mac and cheese and some Brussels sprouts and string beans and we tried a jalapeño cornbread. It's very filling we didn't have room for dessert. I did like that they have a kids area. It's very family oriented. The waiters were all nice. I feel like we had to keep asking for stuff though. My jalapeño Mac n cheese was so watery and had cold spots in it. I also asked for it to not be so spicy but it came out very spicy. Don't think they listened to the instructions when they made it. I'm an out of town-er, and was meeting up with a friend on Sunday who Took me to this place. My mind was blown at the ideas they had for their mac dishes, but the real impressive piece was the kogee short rib (spelling? My friend ordered it for me) it was so delicious, i considered a Second order before having to leave. The atmosphere at this place. The cleanliness. The staff! The Mac and cheese at this location is loose and watery with little to no flavor. I got the elote Mac and cheese at the Berkley location as the Oakland location never misses. This was such a disappointment as I assumed that the food would be the same quality as the Oakland location. I ended up spending $30 and the best thing about the entire meal was the cheesy biscuit add on. Plus it seems like the food portions have been decreased since I started eating at Homeroom in 2016/2017. I definitely won't be coming back to the Berkeley location. I was delighted when I read in Nosh that Homeroom was opening in the Gilman District at 1313 Ninth Street, in the space where the hamburger place, whose name I can't remember, had been. Nina and I made a date to meet there for lunch today. I arrived and was not happy to find a big truck blocking the driveway to the parking lot next door. I thought the driver was an a**hole, then I realized that Office Depot's loading dock is there, so the blockage is unavoidable when deliveries are being made. But it's still annoying, since there's only one entrance to the lot, as far as I know. I managed to find parking and Nina arrived just as I did. We were greeted and seated by Ophelia, who was also our server. She was very sweet. I told her her name was perfect for us, since we're both Shakespeare buffs. Nina and I both ordered the Gilroy mac and cheese. We were both interested in hot tea, but they don't serve it. Ophelia explained that tea was available at Philz, which is a couple of storefronts away, but neither of us wanted to walk over there, so we drank water. After a reasonable wait our mac and cheese was served. I was disappointed that mine was more liquid than what I'm used to from the original Homeroom or Homeroom To Go, and the garlic flavor wasn't quite as strong. I had also forgotten to request bread crumbs on top, but that's on me. Nina realized she's not a mac and cheese person for a variety of reasons, and she left most of hers, which I took home, along w/ half of mine. Ophelia brought us recyclable takeout dishes and we packaged up our leftovers. At my request she brought me bread crumbs and a handle bag in which to put everything because I have been using a cane recently. I will give them another try in a few more months, in hopes that the mac and cheese is more like the original and that tea is being served. bizarre place. came in on a friday night. mostly empty. one couple in front of us, and we all stood there 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged there were customers. one girl was working behind the bar but seemed to only bag to go orders. finally some guy came over and took the order in front of us (which somehow took another 10min.) eventually he asked us if we were ordering take out- we said no, and were again left standing there as he went to separate a small table from a large collection of dirty tables pushed together that had obviously had a large party. he quickly wiped down the table with a dirty rag and sat us. friend and i sat there long enough to drink the carafe of water left behind - as we waited and waited for any sort of further service. eventually we just opted to get up and leave. on the way out we didn't even get any sort of acknowledgment or apology for having wasted so much time standing and sitting around this place with absolutely zero service of any kind. save yourself the time and trouble. read more

Awesome service and food! First off, I gotta say that I came all the way from Los Angeles to eat at Homeroom again. When I lived in the Bay Area, I distinctly remembered Home Room being amazing Mac and Cheese; my friend used to call it "crack in food form". I went to the original location in Oakland but missed the cut-off for the kitchen. Luckily, the employee Sam was really awesome and recommended the newer Berkeley location which closes later. I told him how big a fan I am, came from Los Angeles and made a 50 minute detour to get Home Room. He was really friendly and hooked me up with a free desert for when I dropped by the Berkeley location. I also went by the Home Room To Go location to make sure I got a couple of take out orders for my friends in San Jose in case I didn't get to Berkeley in time. The lady working behind the counter was also super friendly and loved that I was a fan that came from Los Angeles, so she gave me some stickers and an Oreo desert. I also bought the cook book that they have since I'm a fan and got inspired to do my own spin on Mac n Cheese after eating at Home Room. Then I went to the Berkeley location where Aaliyah helped me out. She was also super friendly and I told her about me coming from Los Angeles. She made some great recommendations for food and gave me the Oreo milkshake (that Sam was nice enough to recommend to me) for free. Obviously I'm a fan of Home Room since I went to all three locations within an hour. Great friendly staff like I remember, food is fantastic and they've remodeled the original location in Oakland and opened the new location in Berkeley, both which have a great ambience. I'll definitely drop by Home Room again next time I'm in the Bay Area and I'm tempted to drop by again before I leave for Los Angeles, haha. The service is the complete opposite than their Oakland location in all the wrong ways. The server is disengaged and unfriendly. Their food isn't as lovely - it tastes like it's made without love. Seems like all the employees are here just for a paycheck and don't care about the actual business and the culture it's trying to cultivate. Their buffalo chicken Mac and cheese has very little chicken and I asked for jalapeños and there's barely any. The Oakland location always has a generous amount of chicken and tops the Mac and cheese with minced jalapeños. They only had one cocktail available and 3 different beer options (but none of their beers on tap were available). When my friend ordered her beer, I was told she had taken their last Maui Waui so I had to pick from only two options. Our waiter only came to our table for the necessities (ordering and dropping off food/drinks) and didn't check on us at all. The place felt very rushed and like it wanted everybody out. I really enjoy Homeroom in Oakland, so I was very disappointed by my experience at Homeroom Berkeley. Took a really long time to be acknowledged, and then to have our order taken-- we almost left! And the place was almost empty, so there was no reason that it would take so long. Our server, Braulio, spoke so softly he was impossible to understand, and when we were given the wrong item, he simply said "okay" and walked away. The final straw was when the kitchen turned up their music so loud we could hear it clearly. Total sensory overload with the music conflicting with the dining room music. Basically a bunch of kids who need an adult to manage the restaurant. read more

I take the kids here basically once a week after they've worked up an appetite at Muay Thai. They crush the classic Mac, followed by a giant Oreo. They also have fancy grown up style Mac like the Kogi, which is super bomb delicious! Takeout service is great, but the ambiance is pretty sweet too if you want to eat in. Cute, modern design, nice little patio, bar, and a giant connect 4 for the kids. Definitely recommend it for an easy meal for a week night or takeout eats for a big party. read more

We Door Dashed from this place and it was delicious! We ordered the crab Mac and cheese, Brussel sprouts, and the Oreo cookie. The Mac and cheese had good flavor and a nice texture. The food here was pretty good. I wouldn't say extraordinary but that is because it is just Mac and cheese. The Caesar salad was also very enjoyable and had just the right amount of dressing and appropriately fed three of us as a starting course. We all got the strawberry limeade and it was also very good. I would say the service is average and I want to give the workers the benefit of the doubt because we came in an hour before closing. Overall they just had poor attitudes. Additionally we noticed that my Mac and cheese had tomatoes in it when I didn't order them. I believe the mix up was between me saying hot Cheetos which wasn't an issue and they provided me hot Cheetos. However the charge of tomatoes was instead reflected on my bill which was over a dollar more than hot Cheetos. When we asked the workers about it they just responded that they were the same price.
