I went into homeroom/ melt for dinner with my family and got the lovely Kevin and Kasey (hope I spelled it right ) . Super friendly and accommodating. Ambiance is nice , clean & good music selection . Food is also amazing didn't have to wait long at all . Will definitely be coming back I appreciate those lovely people that looked out for me !

Tomato soup w/ grilled cheese sandwich in the background

When I read in Nosh about The Melt I was pleased to see they had grilled cheese sandwiches paired w/ tomato soup, the perfect, iconic comfort food. I suggested it to Nina for today's lunch. It's sharing space w/ Homeroom and people seem to be doing more takeout than dining in. When I got there Nina had staked out a table outside, thoughtfully giving me the chair w/ my back to the sun. Our server had already given her menus. I knew what I wanted but she didn't, so she looked them over and decided on the spinach and 'shroom burger. Our server didn't ask her what temperature she wanted it and she didn't specify, so it came well done. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. Of note is that there are no prices on the menu, so you're unsure what you're going to pay. Neither of us has seen that before. We both had water to drink because they don't serve tea. Nina's burger came out first and my sandwich and soup came out a short while later. Our server brought us each napkins and a fork, both of which were good quality and a nice, hefty weight. Nina requested a knife to cut her burger in half and it was brought. When she bit into her burger she discovered its well doneness. She wasn't pleased w/ that but liked the burger nevertheless. She had just had a spinach/mushroom crepe and had been displeased w/ both the spinach, which hadn't been cut up, and the mushrooms, which looked and tasted canned. She liked these better, although the spinach wasn't cooked and was just leaves scattered on top of the burger patty. I was bored w/ the sandwich, which was just cheddar, while I prefer a mixture of cheeses, but the soup was transcendent, the perfect tomato soup w/ croutons on top. When we were finished Nina went inside w/ our credit cards to pay. When she returned she reported that I had been given a child's sandwich, so perhaps the adult sandwich is more complex and interesting. She also reported that the prices were amazingly low. She said asked our server why there were no prices on the menu and he said he gets asked that a lot. She and I speculated that it might be to give people a pleasant surprise at the end of their meal. The sun felt so good on my back that I just sat and basked in it. Nina came over after lunch and sat beside me so it could warm her too. Then she left to go to Berkeley Hort and take care of other errands. Meanwhile I continued to bask until the sum shifted and all of a sudden I felt cold so I got up and left. I would definitely return for the soup and I will check what's in the adult grilled cheese. Maybe try one of the burgers.

Food was cold-ish. And we were the only patrons. There was no mustard for the burger. It was sad. Like end of days

Sometimes it's good to try something different and a place with some interesting character and characters. I usually get deli sandwiches which have deli meats but this place has fried chicken sandwiches . So I was craving a sandwich so I headed to Crave Subs in Downtown Berkeley next to BART station. They have lots of sandwiches available on the menu. On a Summer stroll getting some sun in Downtown Berkeley I landed at Crave Subs. Inside it's like you stepped into an ice cream parlor with a comic book shop and arcade and a deli all at the same time. You will see sandwiches on the menu called the Pikachu, Ned Flanders, and Bart Simpson. You will see Chewbacca fries along with the Spider-Man fries and the vegan Sailormoon fries. I got the Captain Boom Halal Fried Chicken, Boom Boom Sauce, Cheddar Cheese and Crave Sauce on a roll. It was tasty and a bit crunchy and had lots of flavor. It's one of the best Halal chicken sandwiches I had. If you crave a fried chicken sandwich then Crave Subs is the spot. It will "cost "you an extra 50 cents if you want to "floss" with extra drip "sauce" to show off on social media and during OSL my social media feed was stuck in the" Land of OZ" If you want great fried chicken sandwich you don't need to visit KFC or meet the chicken"commanders" like the late "Colonel Sanders" just get a Captain Boom with "Halal chicken standards" or grab a Pikachu sandwich or a turkey sandwich called the "Ned Flanders "

One of my biggest pet peeves is when restaurants reduce the guality or quantity of their meal to cut costs while charging premium prices. I will say I didn't mind paying a few dollars more for their subs in the past. I went there today for the first time in a couple of years, ordered a regular size basic ruben sandwich (no add-ons) and was ok paying nearly $18 dollars for just the sandwich until they handed it to me. what I got was a small 6" sub. When did their subs shrink?? in this economy we are all struggling. I get it, things cost more but Craves' owner is not doing his patrons a service by charging them premiums while cutting back on the meals. If you're ok paying that much for a shrunken sub, more power to you. I l, however, will not be going back there.

We found it very tasty, but paying over $25 for this on DoorDash--certainly not worth the price even though we really enjoyed it. The spicy chicken parm sandwiches were not good. The chicken breast was flabby, and came across like it was one of those frozen cooked Tyson jobs. I would be very surprised if they actually breaded chicken breast, fried it, and made the sandwich with that. It was mushy, and the breading was like paste on the chicken. Pretty awful. They charge extra for sauce, which is a little much, given that we paid $21 for each sandwich. But we figured out pretty quickly why they do this: there was hardly any sauce on the sandwiches. And precious little cheese. We each ate half of our sandwich and figured we doctor the leftovers up the next day with a jar of Rao's and a bag of shredded Italian cheese. That helped, but nothing could save that chicken. The meatballs. We paid $15 for four, and we had high hopes, but they were so mushy that they fell apart in the sauce, and I couldn't tell what was sauce and what was meatballs. The only flavor that came across was fennel. Why any meatball should be so fennel-forward strikes me as bizarre. We got what we thought were pretty basic things, and they were fails. If an Italian place can't make a decent chicken parm sandwich nor a decent meatball, that says something. If you go, try the pinsa.

Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.
