Ambiance is nice , clean & good music selection . Food is also amazing didn't have to wait long at all . Will definitely be coming back I appreciate those lovely people that looked out for me !

Tomato soup w/ grilled cheese sandwich in the background

When I read in Nosh about The Melt I was pleased to see they had grilled cheese sandwiches paired w/ tomato soup, the perfect, iconic comfort food. I suggested it to Nina for today's lunch. It's sharing space w/ Homeroom and people seem to be doing more takeout than dining in. When I got there Nina had staked out a table outside, thoughtfully giving me the chair w/ my back to the sun. Our server had already given her menus. I knew what I wanted but she didn't, so she looked them over and decided on the spinach and 'shroom burger. Our server didn't ask her what temperature she wanted it and she didn't specify, so it came well done. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. Of note is that there are no prices on the menu, so you're unsure what you're going to pay. Neither of us has seen that before. We both had water to drink because they don't serve tea. Nina's burger came out first and my sandwich and soup came out a short while later. Our server brought us each napkins and a fork, both of which were good quality and a nice, hefty weight. Nina requested a knife to cut her burger in half and it was brought. When she bit into her burger she discovered its well doneness. She wasn't pleased w/ that but liked the burger nevertheless. She had just had a spinach/mushroom crepe and had been displeased w/ both the spinach, which hadn't been cut up, and the mushrooms, which looked and tasted canned. She liked these better, although the spinach wasn't cooked and was just leaves scattered on top of the burger patty. I was bored w/ the sandwich, which was just cheddar, while I prefer a mixture of cheeses, but the soup was transcendent, the perfect tomato soup w/ croutons on top. When we were finished Nina went inside w/ our credit cards to pay. When she returned she reported that I had been given a child's sandwich, so perhaps the adult sandwich is more complex and interesting. She also reported that the prices were amazingly low. She said asked our server why there were no prices on the menu and he said he gets asked that a lot. She and I speculated that it might be to give people a pleasant surprise at the end of their meal. The sun felt so good on my back that I just sat and basked in it. Nina came over after lunch and sat beside me so it could warm her too. Then she left to go to Berkeley Hort and take care of other errands. Meanwhile I continued to bask until the sum shifted and all of a sudden I felt cold so I got up and left. I would definitely return for the soup and I will check what's in the adult grilled cheese. Maybe try one of the burgers.

Inside - shared space with Homeroom

The space is shared with Homeroom. The food and space is a 10/10!!! You can dine-in or takeout!

Food was cold-ish. And we were the only patrons. There was no mustard for the burger. It was sad. Like end of days

It's also one of those places that makes you want to stay. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and generous. Every time I come here, I tell myself I'll pace myself... and every time I fail because it's just that good. The burgers are loaded and perfectly balanced, the fries are always crisp (never soggy, which is rare), and everything tastes high-quality and made to order. You have to try the chicken and waffles. The waffle batter tastes homemade and the butter takes it to another level... it's one of those dishes you keep thinking about after. I'll even DoorDash it all the way to Jingletown. The patio setup is really well done... there's a mix of larger tables for groups and higher bar-style seating for smaller hangs. The wooden furniture and cushioned benches make it comfortable, and they've got heaters for colder days and umbrellas when it's sunny, so you can usually pick your ideal spot. You order at the window and then just hang out while you wait... it's a relaxed flow and the food comes out pretty quickly. The staff are always kind and welcoming, and the whole place has a relaxed, homey vibe with really good music. Highly recommend... just come hungry.

Cali Alley is one of those places I have looked at thousands of times when trying to figure out…read morewhat to order on Door Dash or Uber Eats. The food always looked really good, but for whatever reason I always ended up ordering from somewhere else. Well, I finally did it. I finally ordered from Cali Alley, and all I have to say is, why did I wait so darn long? Door Dash was having a 2-for-1 deal on the Cali Alley Burger, so I ordered one of those (and got another for free) , as well as on the small mac and cheese, so I ended up with two of those as well. I got fries as he side for the burgers and saved the second burger and mac and cheese for the next day. I also bought a small side of veggie fried rice for lunch later in the week. OK, let's start with the fries ... wow. Super crispy. Don't know what they do to them, but I think I almost ate all the fries that came with one of the burgers before I even touched the burger. The fries seemed to have a coating like some fries do to make them extra crispy on the outside. Whatever it was, it made them so good, I couldn't stop eating them. I was almost too full for the burger. But who are we kidding? If there is one thing I am good at, it is eating more than I should. The burger, which is described on Door Dash as "char grilled, fresh ground brisket and short rib burger, served on a toasted brioche fun with crisp lettuce, tomato onion marmalade and garlic aioli" was thick and incredibly flavorful. I couldn't stop eating that, either. It was that good. I ordered it medium, and it was pretty pink, but it was sooooooo flavorful, and all the toppings worked well together. I didn't get any cheese on it because I wanted to try to burger by itself and not mask it with cheese. I might try adding cheese next time, but honestly the burger is so good, I almost wouldn't want to cover up its flavor with cheese. Oh, I almost forgot. When you order on Door Dash, you can opt to have them include a small side of their chocolate-chipotle bbq sauce, and I highly recommend that you get it. It's a really interesting flavor and is good for dipping the fries in. I didn't try putting it on the burger, but that might be good, too. The mac and cheese was OK. It's important to note that I enjoyed the flavor but it is more of an eggy consistency than a saucy mac and cheese if that makes sense. It has a nice kick of black pepper, which I liked, though. The vegetarian fried rice was also fine but could have used a little salt. All that to say, don't be like me and procrastinate, get the Cali Alley Burger and fries ASAP.

When I came back to them a couple years later, the price point had gone up & I was priced out.) The portion sizes were large. I think it was like $12-13/meal. 99% of the dishes were delicious. I was REALLY pleasantly surprised at the flavor & taste. I expected gentrified dishes. It was good! I was also specifically looking for meal delivery that generated less waste. Planter table delivered that. I got cool enough with my driver (and tipped well!) that he brought me a little thank you plant. I loved that I had the same driver each time. I am not vegan but this hits the spot and is the best meal service I have found. The food is still amazing and I'm happy to see the meal options have expanded, there's seasonal produce options and Acme bread, and now they post calorie information. They have family style option to get a bigger portion for those who have a family, or for me, to bring to a pot luck. They also have individual desserts and full size pies/cakes. Seriously - they have everything. They no longer offer wine for those who care. There are some additional pick up options, too, but I stick with Jack London Square on Wednesdays from 11:30-2:00. Pro tip: get the cookie dough!!!!! And the chili. And the breakfast burritos. And the bake at home pizza ........ $20 credit Referral code: QWC3D2MJ

The burger was extremely flavorless, oily, and just plainly not worth $9. It was so bad I almost felt scammed. I say no pickles on the chicken sandwich and she says there are no pickles. Easy right? We get our food. She bites into the sandwich and there's pickles. I bring it to the front and show the pink hair girl and she says "oh I didn't know". I then say my wifey is allergic. She takes it and brings it back to the cook and they talk. She then brings back the same sandwich w/ the pickles taken off and the wifey said "didn't the pickles touch the patty!"
