It seems the cheeseburger wars are always on when you meet people from New York to Texas in California at a national event or Conference in SF. As Californians we take pride in defending In-N-Out Burger if we are from California and we run into debates about Whataburger cheeseburgers with people from Texas. The New Yorkers also take pride when it comes to a debate with Californians between Shake Shack versus In-N- -Out Burger even over the lettuce wrap burgers. It feels like debating about regional sports teams. I decided to see what are some current differences. I went to investigate at the Shake Shack Burger in Berkeley. On the last full week of the Summer stroll before the Fall I landed inside Shake Shack in Berkeley. This Shake Shack already has one major difference because it sells Rose the wine alcohol in a can. You can create your own Adult Happy Meal. Another thing I noticed which was different was the ambience and the art work on the walls of Shake Shack. In-N-Out Burger feels and seems almost all the same and uniformed. I also noticed they have its lots of cheesy items on the Shake Shack menu. I got their cheese fries and their cheeseburger it was tasty. The fries were not too salty like some and it was cheesy like many other Shake Shack locations. There was one thing that also stood out was their hot dog with cheese also known as the Cheese Dog. It was a hot dog with a lots of cheese spread on a bun. Not many fast food spots sell hotdogs. I washed down with a Cherry Limeade which was a bit sour. Shake Shack is a worthy opponent of In-N- Out Burger. We own a vending machine business and have our machines across the street from this location. Every time we go, we are consumed by the smells coming from Shake Shack. We finally went without our kids and decided to have a little lunch date after we finished our job. I ordered a lettuce-wrapped burger. The burger patty was juicy and really flavorful. The lettuce was a little too much for me, but it was still really good. I think it was the way I was holding the lettuce that made it feel like too much in the beginning and not enough toward the end of my patty. My husband ordered a regular cheeseburger and onion rings. Those onion rings are what dreams are made of!!! SOOOOO delicious. The onion rings were definitely the star of the show. Crunchy and cooked through on the inside, with the perfect amount of batter. Gone are the days of waiting in a long a$$ line in Madison Square Park for Shake Shack. And yes, I'm dating myself here! Pricey, but really tasty and extremely fast food. A burger and fries will run ya about $17, and it's a thin patty, a double is only a few dollars more, and I'd suggest that for an adult. On a Sunday night, it was well staffed, and I pre-ordered and it was ready in about 8 minutes. The veggies are fresh and crisp and the burger with the sauces are dee-lish. Needed a quick bite. A good enough reason to try the Shake Shack for the very first time. Ordered a lettuce wrap cheeseburger and spicy fries with ranch Burger appeared to be a salad. Under the generous helping of lettuce, patty was seared with a light crisp. Wasn't greasy either. Deliciously different! Well-seasoned fries but not spicy. These were crispy as well. tldr, ok I read the *ONLY* one-star review and I feel it was a bit harsh. **PROTIP** Be wary of how many reviews people write, it could be they had a bad day and shake shack was an easy target on their path of destruction. And the opposite is also true, that if it's 5 stars and the person wrote one or two reviews, it could've been planted by the establishment (back in college my boss at a tutoring business asked me to write fake positive reviews, before I understood what yelp was). I DIGRESS. I would say for the first week of opening (they opened on 4/28), they WORKED. I went at around 9:30-10pm (they close at 11pm, mind you). It was packed... not an empty indoor table in sight. People in the kitchen were buzzing with orders. Like busy bees, the workers were hard at work filling people's orders an hour before close. There was hardly anyone available to take my order at the register. There are kiosks in front of the register where people can order without a cashier but when I tried to enter my promo code and got denied, I sought the assistance of a nearby fry-master. This guy was cool, calm, collected and helpful. He told me I had to order with a cashier to get the free Shackburger (this month's deal for National Hamburger Month). What I ordered: - new BBQ boneless baby back rib burger (a lot of b's lols) - mac and cheese - shackburger (free 99) I really loved the rib burger! I would get that again. Ya it didn't look pretty at all. But it was UGLY DELICIOUS. As for the mac and cheese, it was extra cheesy, make sure to bring your lactaid if you're lactose intolerant. I like it slightly more than the one at Chick-Fil-a but I'd have to try them side by side to do more of a thorough comparison. I think you also need to eat it right away because the breadcrumbs get a bit soggy. Other than that, it was a good amount of cheesiness. I loved the shackburger ofc but maybe also more because it was free. When I'm in Berkeley, I like trying different places, it feels like a little day trip to eat out. I heard about the new Shake Shack opening near Shattuck, and since my friend (who lives in Berkeley) had never tried it, we decided to check it out. The grand opening was a few days ago, so it still felt new. I've had Shake Shack before in New York and San Francisco. We ordered two ShackBurgers ($8.29 each) and one fries ($4.99). I also had an email promotion for a free ShackBurger (National Burger Month), so the total came out to $14.64 for two burgers and fries, about $7.32 per person, which is a good deal. The ShackBurger was just okay, but the fries were very hot and really good. I liked dipping them in the Shake Shack sauce. After ordering, they gave us a number, and the food was brought to our table. There were a lot of employees working both in the kitchen and at the counter, and a couple of staff were walking around the dining area checking on tables. The place looked clean, and there were lots of UC Berkeley students dining in or picking up to-go orders. If I'm in Berkeley and in a hurry, I would come back again. read more

It's very frustrating when someone is outside handing out coupons to promote a new restaurant in the area, and you take time out of your day to go give the place a try. I walked over for lunch and was initially greeted with a warm smile, and the restaurant itself was clean -- that's what earned the two stars. Unfortunately, the experience quickly went downhill. The cashier looked at the coupon as if it were some form of alien currency and acted like he had never seen one before. He then ran around the restaurant searching for a manager to figure out how to accept it. By the time he returned, I had already said I would just pay for my food. The manager, who was standing behind the team member shaking fries, eventually came over and proceeded to read the coupon to me twice, as if I was the one having trouble understanding it. At that point, I had already stated three separate times that I would simply pay for my meal instead of continuing the awkward process of trying to use the coupon that brought me into the restaurant in the first place. So yes, the coupon succeeded in getting someone through the door, but the overall experience did not encourage me to return. As for the food, it was lackluster and definitely not what I would expect from a $20 meal. Once the service missed the mark, the rest of the experience went downhill fast. I may try another location while traveling in the future, but this visit was far from what I expected. Very disappointed. read more

I came here when it opened and I would say its your average shake shack burger my only complaint is that the burger needed more sauce and need to be cooked a little less but other than that its a solid place and the service is quite nice here or maybe that might be the case since it just opened and the Ambiance feels like Anchor House lol read more

The restaurant was clean and well organized. Ordering was easy using the self-service kiosk. After placing our order at the kiosk, we took a table locator to our table, and the staff brought our food out when it was ready. The burgers, fries, and mac & cheese were fresh and tasted great. The only disappointment was the chicken bites, which seemed to have a coating that was too thick and were over-fried, making them taste a bit burnt. Overall, the food was good, and the service was convenient. My only complaint is that the portions felt quite small for the price. This is the first time I've been to this specific Shake Shack, and the first time I've gotten something other than a cheeseburger. I got the BBQ Boneless Baby Back Rib Sandwich. I know that real food doesn't look exactly like the advertising photo, but this felt like a borderline bait and switch. The look picture shows a reasonably barbequed slab of meat, slathered in sauce, coleslaw, and pickles. Reality: Coleslaw was good. The meat, though. One step away from an actual charcoal briquette. A dry block of meat, charred (lots of the surface tasted legit dusty/hardened), hardly any sauce AND THEY FORGOT THE PICKLES. I think we all agree that Shake Shack usually provides pretty good food for a high price point, but this was a bit much. 14.99 for that sandwich? More annoying than paying for that was the waste of calories (710). Dunno if this new-ish place is still getting the kinks worked out, or if I just won the "not-great experience at a quality chain" lottery that time. read more

Today, Shake Shake opened in downtown Berkeley. Decided to go and add some joy to my day - so glad I did. This was also my first experience at a Shake Shack, too. It was high energy, super busy, and that was quite understandable. Good ambience, great service, and the food was amazing. Had a Shack Burger...loved it!
