I usually hit up the Oakland location but my friend was in town for the Berkeley Marathon, and when I was directing us to Homeroom, it showed this location super close. I had no idea there was Berkeley location! We ordered the garlic green beans which were great! Didn't skimp on the garlic like lots of places do. I got the garlicky bacon Mac with bread crumbs. Friend got something with jalapeños? ‍ when our food was dropped off we couldn't decide what kind of hot sauce we wanted so the staff brought out all three (like a hot sauce tasting basically lol). We both thoroughly enjoy our Mac, I did my best to leave some to have the next day. (Might I add that it reheated easily and was just as good on day two!) The staff was so kind and we really enjoyed both the food and the conversation with the staff. This will be my new preferred location. Added bonus, they have a parking lot which makes finding parking so much easier!!! read more

4 stars for food, -1 star for service I actually really liked the food here! I went twice on different nights, and both times service was abysmal despite the place being practically empty. The servers generally seemed out-of-it and like they truly hated their jobs. (Is management severely underpaying or mistreating them or something? It was THAT bad.) Last night my table of three spent nearly $100 including a generous tip. I only mention this to say we were NOT stingy customers nor stingy tippers, though maybe the wait staff thought we might be (due to racism? or something?) because they seemed to provide much better service to the all-white tables who came in shortly before and after us. The difference in service was night-and-day. I honestly think if you are a person of color, AVOID THIS LOCATION because there is something really weird here. The difference in service was that stark. And again, this occurred during a slow night that seemed well-staffed. I'll break down what happened last night: - We were asked to seat ourselves and did so (which was ok!). - We waited 5 minutes for someone to acknowledge our presence... after nothing, we walked up and got menus for ourselves from the bar. - We waited another 5 minutes until one of us got up to ask a person loitering at the bar for some water. - We waited another 5 minutes (15 minutes now after self-seating!) before we flagged someone down to ask to take our order. They asked us to wait a little longer. Another few minutes pass before finally, someone takes our order. - Still no water. After another 5 minutes (20 minutes now, lol) we asked a waitress (the one with highlights) who was very attentive to the neighboring all-white table if we could get some water. She seemed pissed AF by that request (based on her tone, facial expression, and body language) and asked if we could wait. - Finally, another server walked by whom we managed to flag down again, who brought us some water. - We wait another 10-15 minutes for our food. After the first five minutes, my soup (which I was hoping to eat with my melt sandwich) came out. I spent the next 10 minutes worrying about it getting cold before the rest of our food would come. And stressing about whether the servers would spit in our food, based on how much they seemed to hate working there/serving us. So I just dealt with eating lukewarm soup with my melt sandwich. - Mid-way through our meal, the drinks we ordered came. (What happened??? Why did it take literally 20-25 minutes after ordering to pour draft drinks for us, but almost immediately for the white tables?) - When the rest of our order came, the burger my friend ordered was made incorrectly (they added bacon, which he specifically said he did not want). We had given up on any semblance of service here so we just said it was fine. That entire dinner was STRESSFUL AF. Out of habit, my spouse tipped the customary 20%. I was livid given how non-existent and hate-filled our service was throughout the night, but it was too late. During this time, several other tables were seated by the same wait staff, who immediately gave them water and menus. They were all white and seemed to not have any issues. So tl;dr -- if you're an all white family/party, come to this place because the food is pretty good! Otherwise, hard pass. read more

In what can only be described as a rush unlike any I've seen before, between impatient guests, food delivery workers who were rushing like that was their job, and a chaotic dining-in crowd, Grace and Leilani had Homeroom Berkeley HELD DOWN! The food was divine as usual, but their (no pun intended) grace under fire was impressive. Give these folks a raise or at least some recognition at the next staff meeting. No matter how many times the same uber eats person kept harping them and telling they were taking too long, they never showed a drop of sweat. They made my experience enjoyable and the kitchen staff made sure that Gilroy Garlic mac was sublime. Keep it up, I'm coming back soon! read more

Outdoor seats leave funny lines on your butt. Cheetos were stale- don't do it. Otherwise, pleasant experience. Service was kind, polite. Family friend. Great for weekend, quick munch fest. I'll start with the highlights because homeroom has a special place in my heart: -milkshakes were good Now on to the not so good: -service wasn't good, we didn't get water or told we needed to ask for water, also no follow up or general asking how we're doing we had to search for someone to get us to go containers -the food was Bland, we got the Gilroy garlic and the elote mac. The Gilroy had no taste of garlic at all. The elote tasted overly lime. We took it to go to see if we could make it better at home. Not sure if it's a location thing but this really bummed me out. If you know about Homeroom you know them for their Mac & cheese. The few times I've had the Mac & cheese, it's been fine--my husband really likes it, I think it is ok. We went to the Berkeley location recently because we were in the neighborhood and after a quick check online to see that they had salads, I said sure. One of the workers there recommended the Cobb salad and wow, I've rarely been so impressed by a salad. It was huge! Packed with lots of veg, feta cheese, and chicken--it was more than a meal. Love Homeroom, but unfortunately, this location is extremely inconsistent and difficult to work with if you prefer their allergen friendly food. I've been a loyal customer for years but unfortunately every. single. order. lately is incorrect. I recognize the difference between the taste of cheese and their signature tofu sauce (love it when it's correct), and the gluten free pasta has a slightly different shape and recognizable texture. Sadly I have had trouble getting their staff to remake the order or even acknowledge the error. If you have dairy or gluten free allergies, stay away from the Berkeley location. This place is NOT safe, despite their original location being far more reliable and consistent. read more

Homeroom is awesome! The food is great (who doesn't love mac and cheese), esp. with creative options for add-ons and vegan/gluten free options as well. Drinks and starts are also great. What sets this place apart for me is the service and the toddler/kid play area. There is a play area that is set aside but near tables so you can watch your kids while they play. The service is exceptional, and the wait service was so patient, kind, and generous with our little toddlers who created a lot of havoc. The takeout short rib mac and cheese was one of the best I have ever had. It was full of flavor and not too salty. The chicken cobb salad was decent (would not have ordered if I knew it had peas). However, it was saved by excellent croutons and the amazing citrus vinaigrette dressing. The cashier is so friendly and bubbly that I want to come back just to hear her thank me for ordering. Meh. Tried it twice now and it just doesn't work. Full disclosure: I make my own mac'n'cheese from scratch, properly from a bechemel, a few times each winter, so maybe I'm a tough audience. But mac'n'cheese should be kinda like pizza: even when it's bad it's good. This just misses. Maybe it's a little too salty. Maybe the ingredients of the add-in's aren't great. I can't say exactly. My kids' classic with bacon was better than my "white cheddar" based mac, so it you do go then stick to something based on the classic, not the white cheddar. The lighting is a problem; all overhead, not cozy. Feels like eating mac'n'cheese at McDonald's. One good thing: there's a play area for kids so parents can have a quiet minute for a meal. If my kids were under five I might come back just for this. But with grade school kids this doesn't rate enough to eat this oddly unsatisfying mac'n'cheese. The base of the mac and cheese is pretty good but not great. This was the disappointment. The texture was fine, and it was all cooked correctly, but the flavor? I have had tastier cheeses and better spices elsewhere. I can do better at home. I have done better at home. The mac game needs to be improved. The short rib mac had sriracha, and it just tasted like sriracha. The short ribs shredded on top were a bit sweet but juicy and did add some to the overall taste, but not much. The jalapeno mac tasted, frankly, a lot like liquid nachos at an As game. That's not exactly a bad flavor, but it's not something I want to eat for a full dish. The green beans were way over-peppered. The brussels sprouts were just fine, the best part of the meal. The service was OK. Guy was a bit... energetic. Sat us next to another party when there were plenty of open tables. Food came fast. Frankly, a lot is done right, but if you're a mac n cheese place, your mac n cheese better be fantastic. It isn't. This spot is good. We tried the buffalo chicken macaroni and the garlicky bacon one. We also got a kids Mac and cheese and some Brussels sprouts and string beans and we tried a jalapeño cornbread. It's very filling we didn't have room for dessert. I did like that they have a kids area. It's very family oriented. The waiters were all nice. I feel like we had to keep asking for stuff though. bizarre place. came in on a friday night. mostly empty. one couple in front of us, and we all stood there 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged there were customers. one girl was working behind the bar but seemed to only bag to go orders. finally some guy came over and took the order in front of us (which somehow took another 10min.) eventually he asked us if we were ordering take out- we said no, and were again left standing there as he went to separate a small table from a large collection of dirty tables pushed together that had obviously had a large party. he quickly wiped down the table with a dirty rag and sat us. friend and i sat there long enough to drink the carafe of water left behind - as we waited and waited for any sort of further service. eventually we just opted to get up and leave. on the way out we didn't even get any sort of acknowledgment or apology for having wasted so much time standing and sitting around this place with absolutely zero service of any kind. save yourself the time and trouble. read more

The service is the complete opposite than their Oakland location in all the wrong ways. The server is disengaged and unfriendly. Their food isn't as lovely - it tastes like it's made without love. Seems like all the employees are here just for a paycheck and don't care about the actual business and the culture it's trying to cultivate. Their buffalo chicken Mac and cheese has very little chicken and I asked for jalapeños and there's barely any. The Oakland location always has a generous amount of chicken and tops the Mac and cheese with minced jalapeños. They only had one cocktail available and 3 different beer options (but none of their beers on tap were available). When my friend ordered her beer, I was told she had taken their last Maui Waui so I had to pick from only two options. Our waiter only came to our table for the necessities (ordering and dropping off food/drinks) and didn't check on us at all. The place felt very rushed and like it wanted everybody out. My jalapeño Mac n cheese was so watery and had cold spots in it. I also asked for it to not be so spicy but it came out very spicy. Don't think they listened to the instructions when they made it.
