Wooo wei! Unexpected delicious surprise. Found this randomly. I was craving a sandwich bad and was driving in downtown and happen to pass by this place. So incredibly glad I did. I took a quick glance on yelp! And it was amazing reviews. I ended up getting the chipotle chicken sandwich, holly hell! The chipotle was a nice little kick, also the red onions balanced it pretty well. However, I did wish I had a tad more lunch meat cause half of the sandwich seemed pretty bare but all and all it was great. I can see that this place probably gets really busy since it's downtown. This is a family owned business and one of the things that loved about this shop is from the minute that I stepped in, I felt like I was at home. One of the very few places open early near campus. I had an extremely kind server who started my day off with a great interaction.

This is a pretty good place to grab a quick bite for lunch. The people at the counter are nice and sandwiches are freshly made. Depending on the sandwich, they usually come out warm. The wait isn't too long, but it also depends on how many in-person and online orders are ahead of you. There are a bunch of options for sandwiches and a build-your-own option if that's of your liking. My go-to is always the chipotle chicken sandwich which is very tasty! The prices are reasonable and the portions are quite filling. Just be aware that there's a 3.99% credit card charge regardless of how much you spend, so try to bring cash if you're planning on coming here. Another note to add is that the UC Berkeley Perimeter Line bus stop is right in front of Sandwich Zone. If I was lucky I would just catch the bus to get to my next class after getting a sandwich. read more

I have recently been on an adventure to try every sandwich place around Berkeley and Sandwich Zone has ranked up in my top 5! It's a small storefront but has an upstairs area with tables. I got the Richard Dagwood and the sandwich was packed! Bread was really soft and ingredients were fresh. The food is reasonably priced. I recommend bringing cash because there is an extra charge (3.99%) for using a credit card. The owners are the kindest people. Solid sandwich location. Good price to portion ratio. The staff slice the meat when ordered. The bread tasted fresh. It's right by the Cal campus. It has limited hours and close by 3 pm every day. They're closed on weekends. There are a few tables upstairs and two small ones in front. Definitely a quick bite to eat type place. Would not recommend large groups. Was feeling a hot chicken pesto sandwich, and this one was good enough. The sourdough was pleasant, the chicken was chicken, and the sauce was yummy. There's a nice upstairs seating area. It's affordable. Not much to say. It seems like the cold avocado ish sandwiches here are more popular. Maybe I'll check them out later. My mocha was pretty terrible - very watery. These sandwiches have a special X factor that cannot be replicated at home. Sure, they use store-brought sliced bread and what seems to be off the shelf ingredients. But, there is something unique and special about the ratio and seasoning that makes their sandwiches so good - it's like they have it down to a science. Mom & pop shop making affordable (less than $10!) sandwiches that I like to support. However a couple things: 1. Sandwiches are pretty good. I usually get the chipotle dagwood or dagwood. They correctly put the cheese on the bottom. However, they put the tomato right above the cheese! Whaaaat? Not sure if this is the first time or if I just hadn't noticed past times. It was in this order: top - lettuce middle - meat next - tomato bottom - cheese The tomato should be with the lettuce!!!!! 2. I really hope they invest in remodeling the interior to make the place comfortable to dine in. They need to update the entire interior. Especially in light of the hotel project on the corner being built, if they want all those potential customers. I wouldn't mind a small price increase so they can make the place nice, comfortable, and modern. Currently, I always pick up the sandwich and eat it elsewhere. - Redesign the staircase/storage area so that boxes under the stairs won't be visible to everyone - Play actual music instead of the radio. Every time I come in, the radio is playing a long commercial block. Ugh and I second another reviewer's suspicion about items in the display case. Usually for breakfast I will go to the Original Pollo because they have an excellent breakfast burrito. (But it's $10). However, on my way there I noticed somebody chomping down on this giant breakfast burrito from the Sandwich Zone. So I puttered in to give it a try instead. Pretty great set up inside, very much like a mom and pop shop. Usually there are only two or three people working. I assume it's the owner and their spouse, and then maybe a third person to run the register. The breakfast burrito I ordered was good, not over salted, and just enough room to add on seasoning if you'd like, or a hot sauce of some kind of seasoning or hot sauce to kick it up a notch. It was a great size to. A lot of restaurants really know how to mess up a very basic breakfast burrito. It's nice that the sandwich Zone chooses to actually put ingredients inside, not just egg and cheese. They had a variety of other options as well, like breakfast sandwiches, and your standard egg muffins. They also had a pretty solid selection of different Bagels, as well as Bagel sandwiches and spreads. Probably not the greatest breakfast burrito I've ever had, however for $5bucks, the sandwiches are really nailed it. In fact, for $5, I got exactly what I expected, which in my opinion is a solid five stars. read more
