Sigh. I absolutely adore this place. There is not a single thing I don't love about it. The baked goods are delicious (even things that I would never try but am daring enough to try because they look so utterly delicious and tempting) and the place is warm and inviting. They have got such a great variety too I've got to say. I go about once a week and try to order at least three or four things to sample :3 and every time they have at least one thing thats different. Each time I've gone I've been lucky enough to get the same wonderful, helpful server (who has, by the by, the cutest smile). He willingly and happily answers all my questions (does this cake taste good? what's on top? is that serious coconut?) I've gone with different friends and every time they love the food and find the selection irresistible. Things I've tried: [ T-T I've probably misspelt some of these though T-T ] Cassis Torte - light, slightly tangy : great for people who don't have a terribly sweet tooth. No Flour Chocolate Cake - oh. my . god. I never knew chocolate cake could be so good. Chocolate Gateau cake or something or other - yummilicious Souffle Cheesecake - so light and airy! New York Cheesecake - T-T so yummy (heart) and creamy Green Tea Tiramisu - I confess, its delicious but I prefer their other goodies Regular Tiramisu Sweet Potato Cake - something or other :D its so pretty looking Honey Cheese Mango Cake or something - the boyfriend liked this one :D Caramel Custard Custard cake - sprinkled with sliced almonds on top I think - I loved the custard inside O_o; Matcha Latte - this was so delicious ( heart) Hawaiian Laupia Cake thingy P.s. People tend to say its a little pricy - which is true. But you can get some items for a great price (NY cheesecake is only $4 and delicious! ) I probably spend a good 35$ every time I go - but its so delicious and worth every penny. I'm glad I don't have a car or live close by. I'd be fat and broke. Not that I would mind being stuffed full of Hiroki's delicacies though, I've gotta admit. read more

One word: YUMMY! Life is funny. I lived in Japan for two years and while I thoroughly enjoyed the many lovely sweets that I discovered, every once in awhile, I longed for something really sweet, like a slice of homemade chocolate cake. This wasn't a possibility because I never owned an oven in my time living there. When I returned to Seattle however, a friend took me to Simply Desserts in Fremont, and quickly became a fan of their Mexican Chocolate Cake. Let's leave that for another review. Back to Hiroki... Oh, how I missed the light, airy, fluffy, and not overly sweet desserts that I had grown to love in Japan. The kind that you can eat after a meal and not feel too stuffed from. If you're indecisive like me, either bring a friend to share two desserts or what the heck, get two all for yourself, they're that good. There are so may options to choose from, so have fun! I really love tiramisu, but in my opinion, his version was a little too light for my liking. I like my tiramisu rich. The flavors were not as dynamic and bold as I liked. They didn't stand out as much and were easy on my palate. Don't get me wrong, the tiramisu was good and I would not doubt has many fans, but to each his or her own. My husband, unlike myself, loves, loves, loves cheesecake. He loves it so much that instead of cake for our wedding, we got cheesecake. I got him a piece of the honey mango cheesecake. I wanted to get him the New York cheesecake, but the honey mango was so pretty, I could not resist. After one bite, I really wished that I would have gotten myself the honey mango cheesecake, it was that good! The mango flavor was perfect and reminded me of a day on the beach (think more along the lines of Hawaii, Mexico, or Thailand, NOT Seattle). Moral of the story is to not always go with what you're comfortable with, go with what's pretty! Haha. Be adventurous and try new things. Sometimes when you think that you have developed an opinion or preference, try again. Restaurants, bakeries, bars, and so on, all have their own interpretation of things. Slightly disappointed by my experience here.. A bakery focusing on French techniques and different ingredients like green tea and cassis? What wouldn't be there that I wouldn't love? Well here's what we had.. and don't judge, we had 3 desserts.. between the 2 of us.. haha don't do the math, just accept it :) -Eclair- Huge... just huge.. filled with a custard like filling, and topped with a hardened chocolate. The item was tasty, but I think it was a bit too sweet for me. Would have been better with a dark chocolate coating, as that would cut down on the over the top sugar rush -Cassis gateau- a mousee type of cake.. it was a light angel food cake layered with a cassis mousse. Loved the fruit flavor as cassis is similar to a black current and has a bit of tartness, but again, overall way too sweet.. Would have been better to layer with a light whipped cream mixture instead to balance it all out.. -Gateau Chocolat- Best way to assess a place, order the most basic thing like chocolate cake! Was it delish? Well, based on how I felt about the two items above, I think you know what's coming next.. way too sweet! It was extremely dense too! Surprising as it didn't look dense.. a bit dry and dense made it taste like an overcooked brownie. My friend who LOVES chocolate was not even a fan of this item.. and she's usually satisfied with a simple thing like a Herseys bar haha! 3 way too sweet and sugary items and of course, $19 bucks later.. I was stuck feeling I needed to utilize my sugar rush energy to burn off the unflavored and lackluster items. Also, my bank account felt a bit raped too haha! I'm looking for a reason to order a whole cake sometime. My favorite is on the weekends when they make their pear-ginger biscuits. A sweet-savory wet dream. Delicious sweets and drinks! I am so lucky to have such a nice cake shop near my house. They are delicate, and not too sweet. I like how many Japanese restaurants offer his sweets as desserts, and I like how Hiroki uses tea from local tea shop. We have to support each other you know! My friend and I go there and have a cake and tea and chat for hours. It's a nice cozy and comfortable space. I don't think that I have been anywhere with more dessert choices. Traditional and inventive desserts galore are available at Hiroki! Choices I made note of- a Hawaiian guava cake, honey fruit topped cheesecake, pineapple carrot cake, a berry torte, matcha tiramusu, regular tiramusu, cheesecake, banana coconut bread pudding, pear ginger biscuits, Russian teacakes, many many cookies, a lavender cake, a bundt cake, a chocolate cake, etc etc. We ordered the matcha and bread pudding- both were delicious. Accessible location in Tangletown with a parking lot. Small shop with a couple tables and a few outside. A Buddist prayer thought mounted by the register. Mixed media art on the wall. I found the spot perfect for trying a new dessert and catching up with a friend in a calm setting. They also do espresso and MIRO tea. read more

Holy sweet mother of all things that are good in this world. A great little cafe in the Wallingford neighborhood that offers some of the most amazing desserts that is sure to please any pallate. My friend and I shared the chocolate gateau and the passion fruit cake. Both brought a buckle to my knees and made me realize why one should spend so much time at the gym. The chocolate gateau was a great intense blend of some of the most divine chocolate I have ever eaten. The chocolate flavors appeared to be layered so you were hit with an incredible blast of dark chocolate complemented by a nice subtle milk chocolate taste undertone. The passion fruit cake was just what it was..passion fruit. I don't know how Hiroki's does it, but it was the perfect balance of flavors and you could simply taste the freshness of the passion fruit (I sure as hell hope it was fresh, otherwise that was some damn good flavorings!) and it were perfectly complemented by a great moist cake that was not too moist, not too dry, but just right. On a separate trip, we tried the green tea tiramisu and it was simply out of this world. I like green tea and the flavors were certainly intense. It is definitely for not the weak hearted but it is certainly something to definitely try! The cafe also offers a stable selection of coffee, tea, juices, and other drinks to sip on as you devour your selection! Service is good, but can be a little slow sometimes (thus the 4 stars) but definitely worth going to! read more

I definitely have to sit in and try some pastries. A good friend of mine mentioned that this place require at least 3 days prior to date to put an order in. I can see why... I've tried the souffle cheesecake and it was delicious! It's light and airy, and just melts in my mouth as texture is like chiffon. I take equal opportunity when it comes to delicate desserts and savory foods. These cheesecakes stand out from other cheesecakes I've tried in the past. Pretty pricey as many would say but pay no regrets. It looks like they offer many wonderful selections to enjoy for everyone's palate and I'm sure that we all have our favorites. This treat is a must-stop and we must share with friends and family. Great for get-together. Lots of flavor to acknowledge...some are nostalgic and perhaps others are surprises. read more

Hiroki is probably the best Japanese bakery in the city. Everything I've had there has been superb. That may seem overblown praise but it's the truth. The only exceptions to that statement are things that I don't particularly love to begin with, but were otherwise great. Three things I love about Hiroki: - Hands-down, Hiroki makes the best matcha latte in the city. There is just no contest. It is perfectly sweetened and the texture is silky and light - Even better than the above maybe is: HOJICHA LATTE! Hojicha is probably my favorite green tea and the latte version at Hiroki is to die for. A wonderful balance of the roasty toasty flavor of hojicha and a touch of sweet makes it oh so lovely. I can't recommend it enough - Cassis Mousse Torte: everyone raves about the green tea tiramisu (as well they should and I recommend it too) but you should definitely try this confection as well. It is so tart and bright it's almost a religious experience and the airy texture is so fine. So if you haven't made it down to this little bakery yet, what's the hold up? Nothing but good things await. read more

But THE PROBLEM was I ordered extra cake to go and I put it in the refrigerator immediately, when I opened it next day, it was growing new green stuff on the side of the cake. I've been going to Hiroki for the past 5 years and I absolutely love it. It is not in my neighborhood but I still go there at least twice per month. First, their espresso is my favorite in the entire Seattle area. Sometimes I go all the way there just for the coffee. I'm not sure what kind of machine they use that makes it so perfect. I have tried a lot of things there. I love that everything is not overly sweet or rich, the flavors can be subtle, and it's just perfect. As far as pastries, I go for the rolls, which are seasonal. Kabocha-Clementine, Orange-Almond, Berry-Cream Cheese, and Sweet Potato rolls are all excellent. Those things are ginormous, moist, fluffy, and my very favorite. The seasonal ingredients in the filling are kept natural and almost intact, not overly sweetened or processed into a syrupy goo, resulting in a sublime bite especially when you bite into a little piece of squash or sweet potato. I've had the following cakes, in order of preference: 1. Cassis mousse cake (so tart! like hibiscus, my favorite) 2 Gateu Basque. Very nice, moist, not-too-sweet classic cake. 3. Chocolate Bundt Cake (I bought a whole cake for my birthday. It was about $40. A lot of rich, dark chocolate in your mouth. Perfect. No frosting). 4. Green Tea Tiramisu. Yummy and fluffy. I could eat 2 of these slices. 5. Mango Honey Cheese Bavarian Cake (with a thick coconut cream filling, more like a Hawaiian Haupia) My other favorite is the Pumpkin Cream Puff. The pumpkin is seasonal. They have a cream puff year-round, but the pumpkin is exceptionally tasty (not full of pumpkin spice, which I love). Their small assortment of savory treats are very nice, as well: the egg, turkey gruyere roll is yummy, as is the sausage and caraway roll. Ask for them to be warmed, and they are perfect. The only things that I've had and didn't like are the cookies and the banana bread. read more

I'll be honest, I was hooked based on the photos alone. The cakes looked absolutely amazing. It's a cute little shop - a plus that it has it's own parking lot! The biggest reason for the 3 stars (vs 4 or 5) was entirely based on the lack of selection when my friend and I went. The photos suggested a land of plenty, but we had a very limited selection of cakes/pastries. I'd guess the pastry display case was about 30% full at the time. The cakes were still in their plastic outer wrapper - which was nice to me since I like removing them, but my friend noted it was a little annoying to him. We got 2 french presses, they were quite small. The press wasn't quite as smooth as I would have liked but it was ok for what it was. I do wonder what kinds of beans they used or how fresh they were - a little acerbic/bitter aftertaste. The cashier (owner?) was really nice, helped me out with the presses and cups to our seating area on the sidewalk. I'd definitely go again to see what other selections they have. read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to remember Hiroki's. I met Hiroki through one of my co-workers who went to school with this guy at the AI. Super nice guy. He does a lot of the desserts for a bunch of local restaurants. I haven't been there in a while, but I know he's got a deal on Espresso's and whenever I swing by, I always grab a piece of his green tea tiramisu. Slightly bitter and not overly sweet. It's a delicate balance that I really enjoy. Aside from that, he's always got some brioche, croissants, and cream filled choux shapes. What's more to say? Hiroki is a gem of a place in Tangletown offering a Japanese take on European pastries and desserts. Take for example their signature green tea tiramisu. Not only is it beautiful and it is, uh, green, and the green tea flavor comes through albeit in a subtle way. The mousse cakes are light and flavorful, esp. the cassis. The gateau basque reminds me of an almond cake I used to eat weekly in Philly. Cakes are offered in individual size, making it easy to take a few to a dinner party. Definitely a treat! read more

At first, I was damn these prices are pricey! Averaging around four to five dollars a slice. I'm a big fan of matcha, so there might be some bias surrounding this review. I like matcha on everything. I drink it as a tea, drink it as a smoothie, eat it as a cream-puff, and now I eat it as a cake. The Green Tea Tiramisu looks heavy , but it taste light. It has the right amount of sweetness, with a subtle taste of matcha. It is very good. The only thing missing is soaking the cake or adding some type of liquor. I also had the mango cream cake, and it was unique in a good way. I've never had anything like it before, but it was equally good as the Green Tea Tiramisu. These two cakes would go perfectly well with a cup of coffee. I would rate this place a 4.5 stars! If you are tired of conventional desserts, HIroki is the place to go. It may seem expensive at a glance, but one bite will make you realize that you are paying for high-quality shit! read more

In Seattle, almost as bad as most of chain-plagued America, there is a shopping mall sameness to everything. Fortunately there are some cool people who go independent and provide a unique product & experience. Hiroki is one such place. Just went there today, the place has immediate calming vibes, with blooming orchid plants everywhere, buddhist-inspired sayings and literature, and really, really nice staff. Oh yeah, the baked goods! Skip the cookies and the conventional stuff, Hiroki has fantastic offerings like Green Tea Tiramisu, and White Chocolate Orange Lavender cake. To the extent that a baked good can be a revelation, you'll find it here. Haupia cake! I'm so thrilled to find this bit of Hawaiian delight in the Emerald City. The mango and coconut shavings were an unusual garnish, but the mango was first rate. The staff is super friendly! Even Hiroki was giving us tips (hubby is always asking around since we are new to town). If I lived in the neighborhood, my husband would seriously have to restrain me from spending all my calories here. update: 10/28/07 Okinawan Sweet Potato charlotte!!!! The vivid purple potato looks like it is piped onto a yellow custard that sat at the base of the charlotte. A pink dab of fruit (or was it a mixture of other sweet potatoes- maybe the satsuma-imo?) crowned the purple puree, turning orange & pink where the two ingredients collide. On top of that garnish was a white chocolate star. perfection! The bathroom has a super cute, kitschy mural with characters like the maneki neko and such. update: 11/17/07 Call me a sweet potato ho. I got a satsuma-imo tart at Fresh Flours. I eat lunch, then get some more sweet potato in the form of a Okinawan sweet potato chiffon cake from Hiroki. This ain't no chiffon/roll cake that you'd find in any Chinatown bakery- it is a light, fluffy sponge roll laced with sweet potato goodness topped with more sweet potato pureed with ginger and garnished with a chocolate star!!! At first I was bummed that they didn't have the above-mentioned charlotte but no worries. Apparently all their chiffon cakes are a favorite and so long as the season allows s.p. usage, I'm in. update: 12/03/07 No Okinawan sweet potatoes in anything today. Apparently it isn't easy for Hiroki to get these organic sweets- they come from Yakima. This could be a very bad development for me (but good for the waistline so maybe I should just shut it). Gah, I hate being the downer in the group. Based on all of the reviews, I had the orange roll. Well... it was ok. It was kind of expensive for what it was, I think it was $3.50 for a roll? And it was really really sweet, although the orange was very subtle. The roll was also quite hard and crunchy, and I prefer softer pastries. When you walk into this small pastry shop in Wallingford, you will be awestruck by the magnificent display, and the best thing is, the pastries taste as good as they look! Each of the cakes is elegantly decorated on the exterior and infused with inventive flavors. I tried the gateau basque (baked custard cake) and the green tea tiramisu, both of which had the perfect texture and taste. The cakes weren't too sweet or too sugary, and the unique flavors inside each slice popped out with each bite. The slices are a reasonable price ($4-$6 per slice) considering the amazing taste and the amount of effort the chef put into making the pastries. I was unimpressed with Hiroki. They had a small selection when I went there. I only saw a hand full of cakes (by the slice), cookies, brownies, and a couple pound cakes. I tried the green tea teramisu which I heard they are known for. I thought it was too sweet (and I hardly ever say that about desserts), flavorless, and too pricey. I would assume that I could find a cake that tastes exactly the same at QFC. I also tried a brownie - which they described as being extra moist and chocolaty. I thought it lacked chocolate flavor and density. It practically fell apart in my fingers ( and not in a good way). I also couldn't get over the poor decorating sense on the inside. I thought it was a poor use of the space and the old world danish furnishings didn't fit the modern Asian desserts. Hiroki and his staff to have talent, but I think there lost in how to portray it. On a positive note though, Ive tried a couple of there things when I go to Victrola and they were outstanding. But I wonder if its just because I was in a more feng shui setting. read more

The cake slices was decent but very expensive. My favorite here is the green tea tiramisu which I can eat all day and night. However if I did that, then I would not only be fat but also broke. Came in on a Sunday afternoon, the cafe was pretty packed so we took the baked goodies to go. We ordered the green tea tiramisu. The tiramisu was pretty light, creamy and had a good texture to it. I knocked off a star for Hiroki because the green tea flavour was way to subtle to the point where I questioned if it was green tea to begin with. If the tiramisu did have more green tea flavour to it, Hiroki would definitely get a solid 4 stars but at this point it's more of a 3-3.5 because of how well the tiramisu was created. I had an ok experience but I think I'm willing to go back and try their other desserts/pastries. read more

Everything looks and taste good here. The desserts are not too sweet. They have variety of fun selections of desserts. Different kinds of chocolate goodys...umm.. I love chocolate! And of course, their famous Tiramisu green tea is perfect the way it melted slowly in my mouth. My favorite of them all is the Creme Caramel which I can't find anywhere else taste this good. Hiroki is excellent because it's unlike anywhere else in Seattle. The cakes are generally fairly well made. The pastries are unique. What I really like about it is that it is uncompromisingly individual. It's not overly decorated, it's not overly not-decorated. It's a nice place, staffed by people with an eye for quality. Good tea selection, too. That near-greenlake neighborhood holds Zoka, Hiroki and Diggity Dog all of which I really appreciate. I love that little nook of food. read more

OMG! I love this place. Their desserts are so good. This week I checked them out after having lunch at Kisaku. I tried the Cassis torte and Lillikoi Haupia torte. Both were delicious and not super sweet. The flavors were intense in both desserts and were really well made which I think makes the $5.50 price tag worth it for each dessert. The shop is very small and intimate. Service is always very friendly and knowledgable. I am a huge fan of both the Green Tea Tiramisu and Soufflé Cheesecake! My only qualms are that the price for a small slice of cake is borderline ridiculous! $6-$7 a slice, it has taken a place that I would normally frequent to an occasional treat. I was not a fan of the Cassis or the Mango Honey Cheese Bavarian cakes, but that may just be my personal taste in textures and flavors. I was a little disapointed that the selection was so sparse although it was to open for a few more hours. There were maybe 6 types of cakes on display. I was really hoping to find more baked goods.
