This is my new favorite bar. The bartenders are really nice, and can make THE PANTS off a cocktail. They offer a really good selection of beers, and the vibe is always really chill. I've seen people playing board games and D&D, so it seems like a great place to meet people with similar tastes. Nice outdoor section too. read more

I typically hate giving five star reviews but this bar really doesn't miss a beat. Always a solid selection of around 8 taps, rotated regularly. Just the right amount of crafty without getting too esoteric for a casual beer drinker. There are a ton of funky little tchotchkes to draw your eye. Far and away, the people are the best part of the bar. The bartenders are genuinely friendly, funny, and attentive. The regulars at the bar are always good for striking up a conversation or inviting you into theirs. One of the owners has a pretty popular podcast so it gets a bit crowded when there's an event or fans show up en masse on a Friday night. read more

Had a great time here a couple weeks back while visiting Brooklyn to see Superego and Spontaneanation at the Bell House. The staff is delightful, the ambience is pleasant, and the beverage selection is excellent. It's a wonderful place to cozy up with a beer and a book (as I did) or to hang out with friends. It's what every neighborhood bar should aspire to be, and I can't wait to return the next time I'm in the area. read more

Now your pal Johnny has been running around Brooklyn a long time. So he's always suspicious when some flashy new bar shows up in a keeping it real hood like some tight-buttoned fresh fish nervously plucking a cocktail weenie while all the guests at a fleshpot fiesta are busy having flap happy fun while wearing leather thongs. But the peeps who run the Hinterlands respect the nabe, ain't about to destroy it, know how to run a good show and how to introduce just enough smart spinach without crushing any bad bro's turf. They are friendly to any old jake or jill who stumbles in there. It helps that the bartenders are patient, savvy enough to serve up a fresh spin on your story if you rolled in with your self-worth crushed. It helps that the place is comfortable: just enough stools in the front, a room in the back with tables spread just far enough from each other to figure out if there's going to be some bumping and grinding later at someone's apartment. It helps that the place is open late It helps that the place is run by the same good folks who run the happening joint Sharlene's just a little north. It helps that they have food. Mac and cheese at an ungodly hour -- which is a real blessing if you're having a night where you're sobbing over a stove heating up a can of Chunky Soup as you wonder why the woman who crushed your heart stole your vintage jigsaw puzzle collection on the way out. As far as I know, nobody who runs this place speaks German. So I ain't sure why they named the place Hinterlands unless they be hinting that they are the humble doors open to all. And I mean all. Which is just fine with Johnny. The last thing any part of Brooklyn needs is another establishment serving as a cultural dictatorship that only results in a sad inrush of cologne-drenched trust fund kids who cannot respect the history that came before. I've been looking forward to visiting this bar for months and I'm excited to say it exceeded my expectations. Great selection of drinks at affordable prices. The owner was wonderful and perfectly balanced being personable with our party and attentive to the many other patrons. Last but not least, Hinterlands looks beautiful. The wallpaper is fantastic and looks great with the rest of the decor. Don't forget to check out the bathrooms for a really fun surprise. Can't wait to go back! read more

I almost don't want to give this place a good review because I want it to remain a hidden gem in my neighborhood but I must because I also want them to be successful and remain in business...it's seriously the cutest bar I've been to in a while, really pleasant and super helpful bartenders, great selection of liquor, wine and beers and a lovely clean outdoor space. can't wait to try the food...it's a really lovely place for a weekend hangout or a random weeknight drink. read more

This is a great bar! It's cozy and has a very nice staff. The craft beers are fantastic and the sandwiches are fantastic!
