My husband and I had dinner there on Saturday. The hit of the season is the watermelon and feta salad--plus , the pretzel and my favorite onion soup. My husband had a burger. The cocktails were wonderful. But the best part is the atmosphere; it feels like visiting relatives. Everyone is smiling, and the chef deserves a Michelin star. Really solid neighborhood joint. I first heard of this place featured from an episode on Eater with George Motz saying he loved coming here, funny enough the day I went, which was 1/24/26, George was eating dinner at the bar. A lot of times when you have slow cooked beef, they could sometimes get stringy and chewy, no not here. Also the spätzle was a really great pairing. Mussels- These were some fat ass mussels. The flavor of them was good, the night I went they were spicyyyyyyy. This was a well made dish and i appreciate their creativeity but I do prefer a simple garlic shallot butter and white wine where I want to drink the broth afterwards. The broth on this was too spicy too drink. Roasted Boneless Pork Chop- Pork chops are always a gamble and the one here was just OK. They're celebrating 10 years in business next week. I hope they get another 10 years in business. This is a great little restaurant celebrating a unique cuisine underrepresented in NYC. Go here in person, order for take out or delivery, you can't go wrong. They even have brunch on the weekends. Full bar too! Their food is made with love that you can taste in every bite. Portions are generous. Large pretzel with 2 dips is great for sharing. Same with the delicious fried mushrooms, ask for extra sauce since it's that good. The brunch spatzel with scrambled eggs and bacon was large enough that it lasted me for 3 meals. Prices are very reasonable. read more

Cannot say enough about the tender braised beef goulash at Werkstatt. And those pretzels! The best in NY (as advertised). My dining companions enjoyed the paprika chicken and mussels, though the former was a tad "heavy" and the latter turned out to be quite spicy. Wow!! What can I say but WOW!! Having just driven in from Christmas in Coastal Virginia we were hoping to eat a hot dinner quickly. Ready to settle for any place my son ordered from, I was delighted when I saw the restaurant he chose was Austrian & German cuisine. He knows I loved German food, which I attribute to my one German/Swiss family line that I identify with so closely. It's definitely overrides other lineages in my genes. Everything on the menu looked terrific. I decided on the Tender Beef Goulash with Spratzle. It had been quite some time since I had good Goulash. Of course a side of Sauerkraut was required. I wasn't prepared for how tender & delicious the beef was prepared. It was a perfect cut of beef & so tender it was easily cut with a fork. The gravy was equally delicious. I finished the beef quickly & mixed the Spratzle in the gravy, topping with Sauerkrauts, Yummy!! My Pescatarian son ordered the Salmon with Brussel Sprouts & Risotto. He immediately commented on how tender both the Brussel Sprouts & Salmon were. It was a 5 Star dinner for both. The restaurant itself is in Prospect Park South. Although delivery was quick & the food was delicious, I really want to visit the restaurant itself. The award winning Owner Chef has a menu filled with entrees that are so enticing. I have never had Austrian food before but we visited Hungary earlier this year and fell in love with the food there. We got so excited when we saw they have goulash and paprika chicken here. We got the braised beef goulash and the calamari and kielbasa. The Austrian goulash is a bit different than the Hungarian ones I've had in the past. It's thicker and even feels more like a sauce stew than a soup. We wanted to savor every drop of the sauce and it pairs so well with the spatzle. The beef was so tender and juicy and the spice captivating. I am a sucker for calamari but I surprisingly liked the kielbasa better than the calamari within the appetizer dish. Our first visit was a take out order and it was packaged nicely. The inside is very cozy and a pub-like atmosphere. I highly recommend giving this place a try! Can't wait to come back again and try their chicken paprika and other dishes as well. They do have a preference for cash payment. read more

Many years later, Werkstatt remains at the top of my list of favorite restaurants in all of Brooklyn. Food is consistently outstanding- ample options on the menu for hot summers and cozy winters. The chef puts a lot of attention to the special menu. The selection complements the already strong menu and is reasonably priced. Don't sleep on the dessert menu - fruit based treats as well as chocolate. Cocktails and beer options meet every need- check the board for that day's cocktail special- always seasonal and delicious. I've been here several times dining indoors and outdoors. Ambiance indoors is eclectic, 6 fun. Outdoors: loud due to traffic. Staff is always attentive, and they leave a decanter of water at the table to allow yourself to pour refills. They specialize in modern German fare and drinks. Lots of variety on the menu and drinks as well. Today, we enjoyed a unique cocktail chicken liver mouse, soup, the Werkstatt burger, and chicken schnitzel. Very large portions with leftovers. Just the mains would have filled us up. I'm really not into German cuisine, but that's not their fault. Everyone I take her loves it! I don't find myself seeking out Austrian food very much-- I'm just not a meat and potatoes gal, but Werkstatt is too homey a place to pass up. Now after a couple of visits I'm very glad for their place in the neighborhood for their grapefruit beers and excellent brunch platters. There's actually plenty of vegetarian and seafood options on the menu so even this pescatarian was able to find something to nosh on. I've been to other Austrian restaurants before and Werkstatt's interior matches the others-- dark mahogany wood tables and exposed brick walls. I like their outdoor seating during warmer months-- it's a great place to ogle dogs, people watch, and enjoy their delicious food on a quiet side street. On my last visit I tried the cod schnitzel, which came with tartar sauce, potato salad and cabbage salad. We tried Werkstatt tonight and while we were not blown away by the food or service, it is a solid Austrian restaurant. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere quite relaxed. We never felt rushed but did feel it would have been nice if we did not have to flag down a server to refill our water or for the check. We ordered potato latkes that came with sour cream and apple sauce (Happy Hanukkah!). They tasted as latkes should taste. We then both had chicken cutlets which were tender but a bit bland. We don't eat Austrian food often so perhaps that is how they are supposed to be seasoned. The cranberry sauce and potato salad that came with the cutlets were delicious. When looking for a birthday day spot, I thought this place was going to be spacious, the spread would be mind-blowing, and the staff to be friendly. What we got was pretty close? The restaurant was a bit out of the way for us to reach and although it was on a main road, it wasn't obvious to locate if you didn't look up to see the sign. We were hoping for a table in the back so we could hear each other better but they refused to seat us without the full party so we wound up sitting tightly in the front and had to watch ourselves with our volume because the table behind us kept throwing stares at us whenever we laughed. The bartender suggested a Czech beer that was light and fruity, perfect for a hot night. Goulash was my go-to, but I was a tad disappointed with the flavors and the meat. The cheese plate had enough to go around but the grapes looked like they had seen better days. I guess the next time I choose where to get the party going is going to be away from this neighborhood. This is the 2nd time we've been around the area for birthdays and it's just not very pleasant; the vibe was just off one too many times for us to return. read more

I've been a fan of Werkstatt since it first opened but lately this neighborhood restaurant has become quite outrageous with its ridiculous policy of only taking reservations for parties of 6 or more. The last straw was my dining experience here today. We were a party of 4 but one individual was late and the owner/hostess refused to seat us. This seemed extremely illogical since we would require a table for 4 regardless of whether we were 3 or 4. Her comment that she "could turn a table in 15 minutes" was both outrageous and rude. Had a very enjoyable meal here with two friends in their back room, which is big enough to host a party 20 or so, but it's cozy with its high ceiling, big skylight and decor. As one of the top rated restaurants in Prospect Park South, Werkstatt delights as a unique brunch offering in the NYC metropolitan area. We didn't start off with the best impression though; we tried to do outdoor dining and sit down at a bench with 2 small tables. The waiter came by and said for our group size, we were supposed to sit at the small table on the curb, but it only had 2 chairs. I was confused and told him I'd rather sit at the bench, and we can just put the 2 small tables together anyway. Eventually he said ok, it's just a rule the manager has, so he'll give us 2 separate checks at the end (which luckily he didn't do). For the record, the outdoor dining space was only about 1/3 full at 2:20 pm when we went. Because I came in my family of 4, we got to try a few different things. In total, we ordered the French Toast, Eggs & Sausage, Werkstatt Burger and Chicken Schnitzel. The toast was a bit too sweet, as the banana slices (which are already very sweet when ripe!) are caramelized, and it comes with candied orange peel. Other than that, I liked the apricot and strawberries. The savory dishes were great -- no complaints there. However, it was strange how the Werkstatt Burger fries didn't come with ketchup, so I had to ask for it. Additionally, when my dad dropped his fork and asked for a new one, it took at least 5 minutes for that to arrive. When our swing water bottle ran out, it wasn't refilled until I asked. I would say overall, the service could be better. The food is great if you order the savory stuff, and remember to bring cash or American Express unless you are okay with being charged an extra 4%. read more

Came here for dinner around 7:45 on a Thursday evening. Most of the tables were taken indoors but were promptly seated by our server. Our server checked for our Covid vaccine cards and each table had a Covid partition. The restaurant is small and casual. It has a nice vibe and is a great spot to catch up with a small group or go on a date. We ordered the potato latkes to share, the Saurerbraten special and Wiener schnitzel for entrees and a creme caramel for dessert. Everything tasted delicious and fresh! Portions are very generous. I had quite a bit of leftovers! Service was pretty spot on but not overbearing. Our server even gave us a complimentary underberg digestif at the end of our meal and was super nice. The food and service here were wonderful. The missing star is for the server not warning our group that the Mushroom Appetizers are BOILING HOT INSIDE. You will not feel the heat from picking it up or using your fork to pick it up. I'm on my 5th day of not being able to use the right side of my mouth, the burns are so severe. If you do order this appetizer, cut the Mushrooms open in your plate and let that steam escape and the boiling liquid drain out before attempting to eat it. I wish the server had warned us. The staff is friendly, and the food is excellent. We'll be back to try more dishes, but the mussels were absolutely perfectly flavored. I had a Sacher Torte, which was a bit on the drier side, but usually, this kind of cake isn't super moist but more on the compact side. I did get to try the Farmer's cheese strudel of my other party, and that one was served in vanilla sauce, which is also a traditional way to eat it, and that dessert was just the bomb, I'll get it next time! My friend and I had a late dinner here a few months ago and were pleasantly surprised by the energy of the restaurant as we entered and how packed it was, even though it was well after normal dinner hours. We shared the chicken liver mousse appetizer, which had a creamy texture and was very good. I got the käse spätzle, a cheesy pasta dish that was satisfying and filling.
