Despite being regular customers for the past 5 years, this place pulled a real number on my wife and I today. A bartender (bald guy who looks like Bob Mould from Husker Du) said he was leaving, so we needed to cash out. I paid for the 4 beers my wife and I had, yet said Bartender continued working (we later found out he was doing a double shift). After 4 more beers, I asked for my bill, at which time I was charge for 6 beers, two more than I had ordered. After a brief argument, I was charged for 5 beers despite only ordering 4 since closing out my earlier tab (I still don't understand why I was asked to close out if the bartender knew he was doing a double shift)? Either way, this is totally unacceptable after being a loyal patron here for the past 5 years. Werkstatt obviously pulled a scam, and I'm sick over this as they're one of the few bars in Brooklyn to feature Hofbrau on tap. I sadly must take my business elsewhere, and urge future customers to keep track of their order. read more

I had a good dinner date here with my husband. Place is quite cozy and they also have a separate back room with more seats. Pretzel- it was served hot and fresh. Delicious. Pretzel was soft, not too dense. Perfect. Comes with mustard and their own homemade Hungarian cheese/paprika dip. The homemade dip is a bit dry so I like to use the mustard and the dip together in one bite. Grapefruit schoenheffer drink was quite light and good. I'm not much of an alcohol drinker so this was a pleasant find. Housemade bratwurst with sauerkraut and potatoes- delicious. Very juicy. The sauerkraut just compliments it nicely, in addition to the schoeneffer. It's not really a filling entree though. Chicken schnitzel-not bad. A bit dry. Tastes better when you eat it together with any one of the salads on the plate. Also, Tasted better with the sauerkraut (from the bratwurst plate). I would probably prefer to order the wiener schnitzel. Overall, I had a good dinner here and definitely looking forward to come back again to try other things here. read more

Ok, but not going back. Went here a few times before the pandemic. One of the best meals I ever had was when they first opened -- the chef or owner even came out to talk to us. The food was always great. Fast forward to July 2022 Went with a group of 5. I'd been talking this place up to my friends for years. It was dinner time but the dining room had lots of open tables. We were met with a cold, unpleasant staff who seemed annoyed we came in or weren't regulars. Our server wasn't even nice leading us to our table and wouldn't look at us as she took our order. She seemed down-right angry when we ordered apps, mains or needed another drink. The bar backs seemed also to be annoyed and trying to rush us running over the second a fork was down What first made Werkstatt different was their unique European/American fusions and powerful flavors. I ordered the beef goulash. A few in my party orders the Werkstatt burger. On this night for the first time, the food was bland and unspecial. The rest of party felt similarly. If it was just the food, I would chalk it up to an off day, but the staff was so unwelcoming, I'm just going to steer clear. read more

The food and our server were amazing the manager was overtly rude and racist. The microaggressions were not so micro. She was disgustingly rude and cold, barely made eye contact when barking at me and my (Asian) family as we were settling in with a wheelchair and stroller, waiting for the rest of our family, but was welcoming to my white cousins and only spoke to them, ignoring us. Loved the pretzels and fried mushrooms and my green eggs and ham were delicious! Always very skeptical with German/Austrian/Swiss cusine here in NY since I am a german buy blood and grew up with the cusine in Europe. I found this restaurant because I seen a friend checked in on Facebook. So we gave it a try for Christmas eve. Our party of 5 ( 2 kids plus 3 adults) where accommodate by great hospitality trough all the staff workinf this night. Decoration is great lots of Austrian Beer advertising ( i mean what else you need lol) and a motorcycle in the wall which my Daughter was fantastic by.. Beer and wine selection great! Food !!FANTASTIC!! You can see and taste that the Chef knows how to cook his home cuisine... Potato pancakes yummy, cucumber salad super delicious just like my mom and grandmother made it... Paprika Chicken and Spätzle super delicious!!! Schnitzel OMG not deep fried in the fryer as 98% of the "german" restaurants make it here... super tender and nicely flavored, Krautsalat again just like home potato salad super tasty... Desser! After passing this place on my way to the Sunday Ditmas Park Greenmarket on Courtelyou for yearrrrrrrs I finally met a girlfriend here for a late brunch last weekend. The place was super cozy! We sat in the back (highly recommended as the front was a little too close for comfort in these Covid times and the outdoor area didn't seem to be heated) which was set up like some sort of lodge. Several big tables available if you come with a larger crew. I ordered a Bloody Mary, which was large and delicious, French onion soup, and their giant pretzel, which was apparently rated the best in NYC by the NYT? Everything was delicious! My friend had the breakfast plate with sausage and a side of spaetzel (sp?) which she really enjoyed. Service was stellar, portions were large, and the prices were very reasonable. First, the good: The service is friendly, they have outside seating, and they allow dogs. There are several authentic dishes on the menu that I don't frequently see at other establishments. I enjoyed the Käsespätzle and a spicy ginger beer. The less good: Austrian mustard is the predominant flavor you're going to experience here. Anything we put the tiniest bit of mustard on (bratwurst burger, the "best" pretzel) was overtaken by the mustard's intensity. Without the mustard, the food was a bit bland, but with it, mustard was all you could taste. The potato pancakes were served room temperature and very oily. I tried a bite, but did not care for them at all. Werkstatt only accepts Amex or cash. In 2023, I don't understand NYC restaurants that don't take Visa and Mastercard as well. It's annoying to need to use their ATM and pay an ATM fee to them just to eat there. I'd rate them 3.5 if I could. If Austrian food is your jam, it's worth checking it out. I have been wanting to visit it for quite some time... because i haven't had Austrian food before. This is a super long review: the service was great: very attentive, friendly and kind. The food and beer was delicious and good. We are definitely coming back. You should try it, it's fantastic. We ate indoors and they followed all covid protocols. They had a few tables set up and large oversized dividers w/clear plastic between the tables. plus there's outdoor seating with heat lamps... We ordered 2 beers on draft: Kostritzer (A super dark beer that doesn't taste heavy like you'd think it would) and Weihenstephan (one of our old standbys). I preferred the Kostritzer because it was new and really good. We ordered the pretzel app it was fluffy, freshly made butter-y and oh so good and big. For the pretzel mustard I'd like to be crystal clear: ITS GOOD AND ALL BUT DON'T BE GREEDY ON YOUR FIRST DIP. It will catch your breath and clear your sinus for a moment. Theres some (ALOT) horseradish. I was greedy and did not read the menu, so I was in pain for minute. Don't be like me kids. The boyfriend got the beef goulache and loved it. The spaetzel was a new and tasty experience for us. But The real star of the show (for me) was the the beef chunks. So ridiculously tender and delicious in the red sauce. I ordered the rosemary half chicken - because of another review I read. IT WAS AMAZING AND SIMPLE. It gave me those nostalgic feels, of Sunday dinners with super moist roast chicken... It was half of a deliciously SUPER MOIST chicken with its flavorful jus (practically a light gravy), a bowl of salad and super thin and crispy fries on top of the jus. The jus-soaked fries: I never knew this was a thing and am upset that it took me this long to have potatoes and chicken this way. Then we had dessert... He got the digestif/dessert drink: that tastes like "Christmas in a cup" (SPOILER ALERT: It did...) it was in a mini-mini wine glass, fragrant, pine liqueur mixed with all the other holiday spices smells. It tasted great. But I prefer actual desserts so... I ordered & shared the Apple strudel with a side of ice cream (which isn't how it typically comes and they kindly put it together for us) It was good. My first time having an authentic strudel. The filling tasted very close to apple pie filling coupled with the sweet ice cream and whipped cream... my favorite mixture. Basically we are coming back to explore the menu more. I never write reviews but this was genuinely just such a strange experience. This was the fourth time ive been here and live in the neighborhood. First off the food is delicious with big portion sizes, and our waiter was super friendly and attentive. What shocked me was the hostility from (what I assume was) the manager, a middle-aged white woman with brown hair. When we arrived it was lightly raining and we politely asked if we could sit outside. We said that we'd be happy to sit inside if the weather made it inconvenient for the staff. This woman was sitting at the bar and immediately whipped her head around, glared at us, and snapped "It's raining!" before ignoring my reply entirely. She screwed up her face to give us an openly nasty look, while the rest of the staff was warm and seemed to have no problem with us asking. Later while we were eating she came outside to stack chairs. Without saying a word to us she aggressively slammed them around and jostled my mom's chair, hitting her arm, which definitely seemed intentional. If you have an issue with a customer's request, use your words. We were polite and flexible, and it was unnecessary and unprofessional to behave that way. She was one of the rudest people I've encountered in a while and I've lived in New York my whole life. It's a shame because the food and service from the rest of the staff were great. In any case not coming back, if it enrages that woman so much to have field questions from customers then I'll leave her to it! Could not have asked for a better dining experience than what we had at Werkstatt!! We were lucky to snag one of the outdoor tables, which had a heat lamp, and was perfectly tucked away on the sidewalk. Our waiter, Carson, was so knowledgeable about all the beers they had (and it turns out it was only his first day!). We indulged in a few over the course of the evening that were all absolutely delicious--highly recommend the Weihenstephan! We ordered their famous pretzel (probably one of the best I've had in my life, including ones I tried in Germany and Austria), the calamari and sausage (such an unexpected but tasty combination), the paprika chicken and spätzle (so savory and rich, and the spätzle made my gf tear up because it reminded her of her grandma's), and topped it off with the apple strudel (not overwhelmingly sweet, perfectly balanced and delicate). Everyone we interacted with, from our waiter to the guy clearing our plates to Robin (the manager/owner perhaps?), was so delightful and kind. The place got busy but they kept everything flowing and somehow managed to get people seated pretty quickly at the handful of outdoor tables. 12/10, can't wait to come back here and eat again! read more

I can honestly say that my meal at Werkstatt was the best meal that I've had in quite some time. After spending some time in a local dog run with some sausage-shaped dogs whose ancestors hail from Germany, I thought that the best way follow such an event would be a meal at Werkstatt. Because one of my two dining companions was one of the aforementioned sausage-shaped dogs, the human and I opted to dine outdoors. (The dog remained in her carrier.) There is ample outdoor seating and the block is not too busy. Indoors is nice, with lots of cool signs hanging on the walls. The service at Werkstatt really is top notch. The bartender was especially friendly and kind. Our server was attentive and friendly. The food was amazing. We began with the Brussels sprouts, which were uniquely seasoned with smoked paprika and perfectly roasted to tenderness while maintaining a satisfying crunch. I could've doubled up on the sprouts and eaten only those as a complete meal. For my main course, I feasted upon the spaetzle with the salads, from the brunch menu. Wowwwwwwww! I felt like singing, "Heaven, I'm in heaven..." at first bite. The spaetzle was soft and buttery and adorned with scallions. It was accompanied by potato salad, cabbage salad, cucumber salad, and tomatoes, all of which provided a deliciously crunchy vinegary kick as a perfect contrast. My first time trying Austrian food was at Werkstatt - I was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful the food was! I had polenta with shrimp, broccoli and beans and I'd highly recommend. There was a bit of a wait since I chose to visit on a Saturday evening (about 25 min), but it worked out well for me since I was able to get a very secluded table near the curb side dining area. Oh so nice. I am sad they only have so few people in for the outdoor dinning. Every table (about 6) are separated with plenty of space. We got luck to be at their balcony table. I miss dining out so much. I forgot the joy and social experience that was lost in my life for the past 4 months. Dining out gives me a joy that can't be filled. I don't go to a restaurant that often but the lost of the ability really eats into me after being a yelper for so long. I miss yelp events. I miss yelp writing and I miss mostly is food made by talented chefs. If this is the only way I can keep them from leaving the industry, I hope everyone will go out and dine once a week. Beside the beautiful Friday breeze, we get to order food at a table. We went for a few rounds and order two appetizers. I am usually a cheap guy who get one and share but wth. German beer here is amazing. Crisp and super fresh. A good draft beer is hard to come by and here you can find it. Food is delicious here. From their pretzels which is probably better than one you get in Germany to their famous calamari, I would order one of each items on the menu if my stomach allows. I can't believe I get to review this awesome place. We here about two years ago with a local Yelp friend and her family, all of whom strongly recommended this place. I've thought about ordering from Werkstatt literally every week ever since then, and now daily given the lockdown's mental effects. I would have but it is a bit of a drive (22m/way) for us to do easy pickup. We arrived early (11a?) on a Saturday at our reservation time and were swiftly immediately ushered into the rear dining area table which faces the sidewalk and beautiful tree view. the seating was entirely prepared with the perfect length of table, all 4 children's positions and spaced thoughtfully, and even children's utensils at the ready with children's menus at the parents' positions. Even more impressive for the questions about hot or cold water and other amenities we might need. Wildly awesome. I regret not taking a photo of their daily menu written in chalk on the mental position because it was so totally inspiring such that we ignore the paper menu. It is clearly a reflection of their daily produce and fresh goods as the variety was clearly centered around a few core ingredients all creatively designed to form a full menu. All of the wonderful descriptions also patiently weitten in chalk inspired our our eager and excited ordering. While I remember not the dishes in detail, I clearly remember how they made me feel. With such freshly handmade sausages, perfectly cooked schnitzel, and wonderously satisfying cheese and egg compliments, it reminds me how comforting Austrian food is to me. Bonus points for the extremely cool and comfortable decor. All the decorations are very chic and conversation inspiring. The food is really delicious. Start with a cocktail. My fave is the pear martini. Share an appetizer like a pretzel. The soups are phenomenal. My fave is the onion soup. Soup specials are great too. Best entrees are the goulash, salmon and chicken. If you ordered a cocktail and soup, you might want to share an entree. The chicken comes with fries and gravy. Sometimes I eat the fries and bring home the chicken. When I feed my leftover chicken to the dog, the chef wakes up and says, "Someone is feeding my cuisine to a dog!" read more

This isn't the type of place I would expect for the neighborhood. It's actually nice and classy and moderately expensive. Happy Hour is weekdays 5-7pm and $5 draft beer/wine. Normal hours - it's a bit much but $8 wines and beers on the menu would do for a weekend dinner. Wednesdays - $1 oyster nights. Brunch is $15 for anything on their menu with a complimentary drink. I came in for dinner and they were able to spread a fairly large party of us in their backroom near a roaring stove fireplace with a motorcycle on the wall. Interesting decor for an Austrian (not to be confused with German but close enough) restaurant. We started with a giant pretzel that was passed around. Both the spicy mustard and the hungarian liptauer cheese were really great. They had a couple of interesting dinner specials available but I went with the Kase Spatzle with caramelized onions, cheese, and bacon. Accompanied on the side of the dish were sauerkraut, a tomato salad, potato, and cucumber salad. The spatzle was good and a heavy dish. I took half of it to go for second dinner after I got drunk that night. The side salads were also great and it was fun that you got to try a bit of everything. The cucumber salad was different. Usually used to Austrians making it with sour cream (at least that's how my family always made it) but this was the less fatty version with vinegar and sugar and tasted refreshing. My friends ordered a variety of other things. I only tried the braised beef goulash but that was a winner. The beef was seasoned so well and really tender. The paprika chicken smelled and looked pretty good as well. All in all, a solid spot for the neighborhood with a pretty good selection of wines and beers on tap. read more

Not exactly a Werkstatt, more like a fancy Austrian-inspired gastropub. Manages to be touristic (hey, you can see the Freedom Tower!) without being all the way kitschy. Start with a drink; they have a great selection of wine, beer, cider and cocktails. We recommend the alcoholic ginger beer, the Salzburg '75, and the hot Schatzi (that's best after dinner with cake or something). They have more specials than some places have fixed menu items, so you never know what might take your fancy. For vegetarians from the regular dinner menu, we loved the spätzle with cheese, accompanied by cucumber salad, cabbage salad, potato salad and tomatoes. An excellent meal for one, or part of a bunch of shared dishes in a larger group. The leek mushroom risotto with brussel sprouts is also delicious. Attentive service! Clean gender neutral restroom.
