Buttery nan, eggplant chicken, and shrimp noodles

Tanya W.

I went back again and I'm really glad I did. The service (two young sweet women were very attentive) and the food were both great. I always love naan but theirs was very buttery and seemed to be thicker than others, quite delicious. The tomato curry on the chicken and eggplant was extremely flavorful (I added a little salt). I also tried the shrimp noodle dish and it was cooked perfectly. The place is spacious and clean but I wouldn't call it cozy or romantic for date night. There were large TVs on with documentary type scenes of Nepal and Tibet which were beautiful and better than regular television. All in all I'm glad that I went again and I look forward to returning and trying other things on the menu.

Came here again as we loved it. On Mother's Day! Buzzing! But quality and service still excellent . Got complementary Mother's Day dessert. It was yummmmy. Who would know vegan rice pudding would be this delish! This place deserve 10 !

Had an enjoyable weekday lunch with friends at this restaurant. We tried the chicken lunch specials and the lamb lunch special, all of which was very flavorful and made for a delicious meal. I tried the "medium" spice level which was noted as a "6 out of 10" on the spice scale where 10 is the spiciest. In case this is helpful to those who enjoy truly spicy food, to me this felt like more of a 4-5 on the spice scale--to be clear, still very tasty! The chai tea was also a nice accompaniment to the meal-I appreciated that it was not sweetened (though sugar is provided on the side if needed). The place itself is welcoming and was quiet enough for our party to have a lovely conversation and hear each other. Service was also attentive. The restaurant is located in Montecito Plaza so parking is generally easy to find. Worth a visit if in the San Rafael area!

Nepalese chow mein, chana saag, naan and rice

Fantastic food and service! I think this place has been there forever, but despite growing up in the area, I had never been. My friend and I were pretty hungry and shared a bunch of things including the momo sampler which was a total of 12 momos (4 vegetarian, 4 chicken, and 4 pork), nepalese chow mein with chicken, chana saag, and naan. They also gave us soup to start and it was so delicious. Literally everything was so good, it was definitely a lot of food for 2 people but none of it went to waste!

Momo platter (round is pork, crescent is chicken, oval is vegetable)

Came for dinner on a Wednesday night and it was almost a full house! As we ate, more people came and all tables were filled except one. What a popular place. I can see why because their food is delicious. Fiancé and I got their momo platter (4 each of the veggie, pork and chicken momo), chicken kabob, and chicken thukpa (noodle soup). We have never had thukpa before and it was pretty good and warming. Perfect on a chilly night. Momos were juicy, and beautifully wrapped. The chicken kabob came out sizzling and was quite juicy. Their portion size is great. We even had some leftovers for next day. Service was fast and friendly. Was impressed there were just two people waiting tables/taking orders for a full house. Food came out quick and there were even a couple takeout orders while we were there so they definitely managed the flow quite well. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area again.

What a wonderful place. I went and tried a few different dishes and everything was really good. As someone that has been to india multiple times the traditional Indian dishes were really good. Outside of traditional Indian dishes I tried the Pork and Veggie Momo's. Both were outstanding ! The other thing I liked about Himalayan Kitchen was the family atmosphere of the place, it felt family owned as the food preparation, service, and ambiance didn't strike me as a place that was a chain. Seemed like everyone was there to make the customer as happy as possible I would recommend eating here to anyone that is looking for good south asian ethnic food !

Sanaz S.

So glad to find Himalayan Kitchen in San Rafael! My husband and I are big fans of Himalayan or Nepalese foods, and we thought everything here was flavorful and well made. We ordered two lunch specials, Baingan Bartha and Aloo Cauli. We also got the veggie momos. The presentation was great and the portions were good. The decor is charming, and the service was fast and friendly. One thing that could be improved is the salad that comes with the lunch special, it was just mixed greens and a few strips of cucumber. There wasn't any vegan dressing option, so we had it with olive oil and vinegar. We plan to come again and try more menu items.

Wonderful food! This is a photo I took of our latest take-out: Chicken with eggplant, basmati rice, mixed vegetables and naan bread. They will substitute white chicken breast meat instead of dark meat if you want also. The staff always very friendly.

Mark K.

I feel very comfortable when I walk into this place. I like that they have some distance between the tables and it's not too terribly noisy. The staff is friendly and attentive. After ordering, each diner is given a cup of daal soup. The flavor is so good. We ordered the Kukhura Pharsi (Chicken & Pumpkin). The description says "butternut squash", but it seems to be pumpkin. We also ordered the Lamb Saag and Garlic Cheese Naan. Everything was hot (temp) and nicely spiced. We ordered very mild and it was just that. If you like naan, try the garlic cheese naan. It's my favorite flavor of naan. I will be back.

Belle J.

Came here for a work dinner and we all really enjoyed it. We shared a momo platter for appetizers. My coworkers enjoyed it a lot but I have had better elsewhere. The sauce that came with it was really good though! I had a lamb tikka masala and I asked for it to be very spicy and It was very spicy! I actually really liked it but if I have to order this again, I might just go with spicy than normal, not very spicy. I also got a cheese garlic naan on the side and I loved it! One downside is that this place doesn't have desserts (at least it wasn't offered). Service was great. Our server kept checking on us the whole time.

One of the best restaurants in Marin! We went here for the first time tonight and were amazed. Heard about this restaurant through YELP and other social arenas --- so much positive buzz that we decided to give it a try. Fantastic service and superb food in a comfy and relaxed setting. We were offered a delicious complimentary soup. We then proceeded to order the following for 3 people: Garlic Tikka Fries Momo Platter [fried] Butter Chicken Shrimp Curry Basmati Rice Garlic Naan This is how food must taste in Heaven. OMG, no joke! Every dish was smackin' and delicious. Fresh, hand-made, and made to perfection. Himalayan Kitchen gives big portions too and we couldn't finish it all so put it in a to-go container. Friendly Service throughout the meal was more than you can ask for. Water was re-filled promptly, dishes removed, old plates changed out --- all without having to asking. Really great service! Service and food were dialed up to Eleven! I wish I could give more than 5-stars. Himalayan Kitchen is deserving of 10-stars! Seriously, my new favorite restaurant in Marin. We can't wait to go back! Highly, highly recommended!

Very happy with my experience here. There were many vegan options which were clearly labeled on the menu. This place is a bit hidden, tucked in the corner of the plaza. Very clean interior. We were immediately given a carafe of water upon seating. The food was amazing. We tried the aloo cauliflower lunch special and the veggie momos. The momos were my favorite. Perfectly spiced, even without any additional sauces. I really enjoyed the cauli as well. I don't get Himalayan food very often but this place makes me want to drive all the way from Berkeley!

We came for Christmas lunch and were pleasantly greeted and sat. They have a wonderful lunch menu! We ordered vegetable samosas to start, and the were delicious. I had the chicken tikka masala with basmati rice, side salad, and daal soup. My son had the butter chicken with garlic naan, side salad, and daal soup. My sister had the fried rice and chicken chow mein. Everything was delicious, and tasted fresh. Very happy we found them for our celebration!

I ordered lamb kabob, lamb curry, saag paneer, raita, and butter naan for take out on a Monday night. The food was tasty and fresh and not at all oily. Although the lamb had good flavor it was dry and chewy. In my opinion way over cooked. The naan was dry and flavorless. read more

very good food in non-descript place. We actually went thinking it was owned still run by prior Masala and were wrong: new owners, new more Himalayan food ... Super nice folks who run this and the food was really excellent. We like hotter/spicy food and ours came as requested (not easy to find in Marin - spicy). The food was all excellent. Best momo's I've ever eaten; very good Himalayan chow mein, and great Indian-style foods with a distinct flavor of Himalaya. We will definitely return and look forward to it. I encourage you all to try and support this new restaruant. read more

Believe me when I say I was SKEPTICAL about trying this place when I heard it was under new ownership. I've been coming to this restraunt pretty much weekly since it opened up under the previous owner. But I rolled the dice and decided to give It a shot and let me tel you. IT PAID OFF. The food is still great! The staff still friendly! they even gave me a bowl of soup while I waited for my order to be finished up.. Totally recommend this place whether you're dining in or taking out! Way to go! read more

Have you ever opened to-go containers and gotten so excited by the aromas that you actually felt intoxicated? Well I have. This convenient San Rafael Indian Restaurant is better than anything we've tried in San Francisco, LA or Boston. We got the mild versions of several dishes, and both of us were happy with the spice level - I usually have to spice mine up at the table. The staff was great - both on the phone and in person, and the place was spotless. Please help keep them in business, for all our sakes! read more

So good! The food here was so delicious. We tried the pork momos to start -- fresh, tasty. The Nepalese chow mein (veggie) was indeed just different enough -- a bit lighter than what we are used to and fresh veggies with a nice crisp to them. So too, the chicken tikka masala was familiar, and just a bit more tomato-forward to make it interesting. Oh, such warm and welcoming hospitality. read more

We are starting to get out for lunch again after a pandemic absence. We intended to go to Tommy's Asian bistro. Voila, it has changed into Masala. So we tried it. It was very tasty Indian food. The lunch menu is limited but the waiter was very good about offering options. The only curry on the menu was lamb curry. I told him I wished they had a chicken curry and he said no problem. So my wife and I both had the chicken curry. It was very tasty. My only issue was the size of portions and it is unusual. They served too much. They gave us each 4 pieces of naan and we could have easily done with half that much. And the amount of rice and lentils was just more than we could eat. But we will definitely go back. Waiter was very sweet and they have done a nice job on the inside. I hope they do well. Give it a try!!! read more

The boneless biryani was extremely spicy and had only about 6 pieces of chicken with a huge amount of gravy. This was nothing like the biryani we had during our first visit. We brought this to the person's attention while the food was right in front of him. Instead of acknowledging the issue, he initially told us that wasn't true. He eventually said sorry, but then told us they couldn't compensate us because the biryani was already over. We never even asked for compensation, so that response was especially upsetting and unnecessary. The Fry Piece Biryani was also very underwhelming. What makes this more disappointing is that we specifically came back because our first experience was so good. We genuinely loved the Vijayawada Boneless Biryani during our first visit and were excited to have it again. Unfortunately, the food quality was completely different this time, and the way our concern was handled made the experience even worse. I really hope the restaurant can be more consistent with the food and, more importantly, listen to customers when they point out a genuine issue.

Express Lunch menu (menu notes which items are gluten free and vegan), includes lentil soup, salad, butter naan and choice of white or brown rice. We really appreciated the brown rice option. Chicken tika masala - tandoori roasted chicken simmered in a mild creamy sauce. Our sweet server (owner?) mentioned that about 95% of the people love this dish and I am definitely in that group. Wonderful flavors and generous amount of tender chicken. Tofu, kale & potato curry - ingredients all simmered with basil and coconut milk. Very flavorful and seemed healthy. My husband would definitely order again. Our server was friendly, caring and was always smiling. Two servers were handling the entire dining room plus the outdoor diners and they were seamless in their efforts. Our server had recommended the tika masala to me and she was curious what I thought of it. I would order it again tomorrow! The interior is decorated comfortably. Inside the restaurant there is a calming feeling as they were playing slow Hindu chanting music low on their sound system. The first server We began with was very young and maybe learning the menu still as he was really not that good at answering questions on the menu. As soon as we checked in on Yelp, suddenly service picked up. Another more experienced server brought us first, hand towels to wipe out hands (a nice touch, but the towels were almost cold when he brought them, was it an after thought?); and he also brought us complimentary cups of dal that were very tasty. The dishes we got were saag lamb, butter chicken, and organic channa masala, and garlic buttered Naan. Had our first server known how to describe menu better we may have chosen a few different items. He did recommend the butter chicken as one of his favorite so that's why we got it as we often enjoy it other places as well. It was very good, a classic with great sauce, probably the favorite dish. The saag lamb was good too, but we almost got the patak lamb, similar sounding dish but maybe creamier/ other veggie too? But our first server could not really describe difference well. I'm thinking we may have enjoyed the other dish better than saag lamb which was good, but felt the spinach was extremely over cooked, and so finely chopped almost like it was highly minced or powdered? But it was flavorful. The Channa Masala was on the dry side. We we're trying to decide on a saucy vegetable dish and we asked about this dish because we liked that it said organic. That same first server said it was saucy, but not that saucy. Each dish comes with your choice of white or brown rice, or steamed veggies. Two dishes we got brown rice with, and the third we got steamed veggies because we thought there would be more sauce overall to add them too. The rice was allot ( took quite a bit home); the veggies were this nice mix, but so boring with no taste, and what a waste. The veggies even had water floating in bottom of dish. It would be so much nicer if there were an option to have these lightly stirfried with a little flavor as an option ( they were completely bland) , and there was really not enough saucy stuff to add them to so only partially eaten, left remaining there on table instead of taking home with other stuff. We asked for a sample of their side sauces and we got a tiny (like a tablespoon each?) 3 dish sampling of their very tasty homemade mango sauce, tart and tangy cilantro mint sauce, and some sweeter tamarind sauce. But they were very tiny amounts. The Naan was light and crisp, very nice, but could barely taste garlic butter. We asked for our dishes to be medium heat and it was fairly mild for us still, but i guess with American palate, spicy can be relative. But oh well. We also had cups of chai (under $5.00) that had refills, and a glass of house white wine ( Murphy good Sauvignon Blanc was only $8.00 so that was a deal). I'm giving 4 stars for their efforts, but hope they read this so they can improve a few things.

This time, we got the potato cheese balls and the chicken curry combo platter. The combo is priced at $23 and gives you plenty of food such as the curry, lentils, spinach, rice, papadum, salad, another tomato based sauce, and funds it out with rice pudding. This combo platter is easily enough to feed two people or to have plenty of extras to take home. We had the pleasure of working with this restaurant to cater our wedding, and they truly exceeded our expectations. The food was absolutely delicious--every dish was flavorful, fresh, and beautifully prepared. Our guests are still talking about it, especially the Chicken 65, which was an undeniable fan favorite and disappeared quickly! Beyond the food, the customer service was outstanding from start to finish. The team was responsive, professional, and made the entire process feel seamless and stress-free. On the day of the wedding, everything was set up on time and ran smoothly, allowing us to fully enjoy the celebration. We also really appreciated the generous portions--there was plenty of food for everyone, and we even had ample leftovers. The fact that they provided takeaway containers made it easy for us and our guests to bring some home, which was such a thoughtful touch. We couldn't have asked for a better catering experience and would highly recommend them not only for dining at the restaurant, but also for any special event! read more
