We ordered takeout online via Uber Eats today for pick up at 5:30 PM. When we arrived at 5:30 to pick up our order, only then we were informed that our order was canceled. This last-minute cancelation was infuriating enough, but when we went in person to ask why it was canceled, the lady we spoke to blamed Uber Eats and didn't apologize; saying that they paused accepting orders from Uber Eats. They obviously didn't do it properly if I was able to place an order. At least take ownership of your screwup, and don't try to deflect blame. They made an already terrible situation that much worse. We'll never be getting from here again. read more

I love Himalayan Kitchen for making reasonably priced delicious Indian food, but my experience yesterday was frankly infuriating. Me and a friend arrived at about 7pm. It took about 20 minutes to take our order when a server tried to take our menus. We told him we hadn't ordered yet and he came out and took our order, we ordered a curry dish, a tandoori dish, an appetizer, rice and naan. We then proceeded to wait for almost an hour as multiple tables that came in after us ordered, got their food and left. My friend and I joked that when we sat down the sun was up and here we were with the sun down and still no food. But slowly we began to get more and more frustrated at the wait, eventually deciding to leave if the food didn't come out by 8:15. Right at 8:10 a server arrives with samosas and basically says that our waiter lost our order and never put it in the system. My friend and I were absolutely furious. The server said the samosas were a complimentary dish as an apology and that they would comp our meal on the house. My friend and I were not in the mood to eat there anymore and wanted to leave, but the manager came out and insisted he would rush the order and comp us, so we decided to give it a chance. Another 15 minutes goes by and to my fury another table gets its order before us. You would think that the kitchen would prioritize the order of the table that has been waiting for over an hour, but I guess not. Finally our meal arrived, and the manager said that the chicken tandoori was what caused the delay. When I snapped back asking if it takes an hour and a half to prepare chicken tandoori, he quickly apologized and clarified he was joking. I appreciate him trying to lighten the mood, but he needed to read the room a little better; my friend and I were pissed and not in the mood for joking. He also offered a complimentary dessert, but when the server asked him about our appetizers he said that they were out and that the samosas were supposed to make up for it. So I guess the samosas were not an apology, but instead were making up for our missing appetizer??? We ate our food and it was delicious but our mood was spoiled by the experience. On top of it all the complimentary dessert never arrived and we weren't about to risk waiting another half hour for it, so we left. Overall I really like this place and I do believe the manager did his best to accomodate us after the error was discovered, but reading their reviews this is not a one-off incident. This restaurant needs to step up and organize better. They also didn't seem to have enough servers, which likely contributes to its disorganization. The reason this is a 3-star review and not one is because they did comp our meal and the food was delicious, but I'm still very irritated at waiting an hour and a half for our food after they lost our original order. read more

Was feeling some Indian and was intrigued by the menu so we stopped in. I don't usually speak to much on decor, ambiance, etc but this place is cool! Very understated but it just has a really good vibe. Also the lanai seating is great. Views not spectacular but there's a great breeze keeping you comfy which is great. As for the food, I love Indian and this place does not disappoint. They have great lunch specials with a good variety of dishes. We ordered a few things and everything was excellent! (Incl a great appetizer platter). I also like you can vary the spice level from 1-10 (next time I'll go higher but a 5 was med mild to me). Other reviews complain about the slow service but the waiter (who was great) explained everything is cooked fresh to order and Indian isn't fast food. With that in mind it actually wasn't bad at all. It's with a sad heart I write this review! This is purely for delivery, I have never eaten there and hope that it would taste better there than packed up. I was so super stoked to have an ethnic choice for DoorDash to Hawaii Kai and jumped at the opportunity to order from Himalayan Kitchen. There just aren't many ethnic options in general, and Indian food is hard to find, especially GOOD Indian food. I put in my order for my favorites - saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, and malai kofta. Of course I added on basmati rice, garlic naan, and samosas. So it started that they forgot the rice. It's only $2, so whatever. The garlic naan was yummy and nice and soft and fluffy! I was so excited to try all the rest of the dishes. The Samosas were a bit soggy and bland. Not crispy like I'm used to? And no kick unfortunately. I spooned out the chicken tikka masala and saw immediately the dish was extremely watery. I mixed it a bit but it was still watery. Boo! The chicken was also almost hard. It was very dry white meat unfortunately. Next the saag paneer was watery as well. Maybe this is just their style? Both were extremely, extremely salty as well. I guess rice would have been nice but this was overboard even with rice (I made some of my own rice). Lastly, the malai kofta veggie balls were yummy. Me and three other friends checked this place out since the initial restaurant we were planning on going to was closed for MLK day. This was my first time eating Indian food in Hawaii, and the food was very good; Butter Chicken $14.95 - probably my favorite of the night. So flavorful and rich, with big chunks of chicken. Chicken Tikak Masala $14.95 - a little thinner consistency than the butter chicken, LOTS of smaller pieces of chicken. I loved that they used chicken breast in both dishes - it was easier to eat because there weren't any fatty pieces. Garlic Naan $3.95 - we ended up getting two because it was a little smaller than expected, but the flavor was good! Not too garlic-y, and the bread itself was very nice and soft on the outside, and thin on the inside. Saag Paneer $14.95 - very mild in taste, it was like a spinach dip with chunks of cheese! hehe Samosa $6.95 - comes with two decently sized samosas, stuffed with curried potatoes and green peas. The outside was perfectly fried and crispy, and the inside was nice and fluffy. The portions were a little smaller than I imagined for the price, but we were all satisfied with what we ordered. We got the level 3 for all the entrees, which was probably just right with a little kick. The food was good, but service could be improved. It took a good 10 minutes for the waiter to finally take our order (and the check after our meal), even after waving them down twice (and he even acknowledged us, and continued bussing tables). Our server seemed a little overwhelmed and confused when taking our order, and when I asked to use the 5% off Yelp check-in, he said he'd have to ask his coworker how to do it. Been going to this place from time to time since it opened, which has been a good number of years. Each time, it has always been an enjoyable experience with great food. One of the best things about this place is it's odd floor layout which allows for a different dinning experience on your seating. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. It is great for couples, families, and small groups of friends. I love the extensive menu of various offerings. You are sure to find something for everyone in your party. When I say extensive, in the Tandoori Breads page, there must be over a dozen different types. My favorite is the Kaya Naan which has apricots, cashews, raisins and paneer, giving it a both slightly sweet and savory taste. Their biryanis selection is great as well. The portion sizes are fairly decent and a group of 4 could easily share one. Love the lamb biryanis and the lamb is not too gamy at all. Their prices are also reasonable and they have friendly service that seems fairly quick for as busy as they can get. My only con, is that I had the parking in the area. Oh my goodness such yumminess!!! My husband, who is India born and whose mother cooks the tastiest homemade Indian food, says Himalayan Kitchen is some of the best restaurant Indian to be found in NYC, LA, Paris or Honolulu! That is quite the recommendation! The food is always super fresh and delicious. I appreciate that it isn't drowned in oil, as so much restaurant Indian food can be. The spicy is HOT! Beware! But that is authentic! I love all the veggie dishes I have tried, which includes dahl makhani (lentils), okra, aloo gobi (cauliflower with potatoes), saag paneer (spinach with cheese), and baingan bharta (eggplant.) The kids devour the veggie samosas and the Tandoori chicken tikka kebabs and (of course) the bread - naan and rotis. My husband's favorites are the chicken kadai and chicken madras. And in covid days, outdoor seatings also has extra point. The restaurant has ample outdoor seatings to enjoy the balmy evening. All entree can be ordered to your spice level (pro tip: you can ask for a hot sauce on the side if you are not sure. The sauce is quite hot but at least you can add as little as you wish.). I enjoy the lamb Tikka masala. The tomato masala sauce is quite addicting and goes really well with plain naan (personally think garlic naan will take over the curry flavor). Although reservation was not required, the evening I went was quite busy with lots of door dash/ take out orders, along with walk-ins. My date and I got three dishes- eggplant korma, yellow dal, and veggie curry. Every one of them tasted like salty tomato sauce. No spice difference between any of them, no flavor whatsoever. I could've put a basic veggie blend and some salty tomato sauce together and literally that would be the curry. I was too embarrassed for the restaurant to tell them the food was so disappointing... Once someone asked how the food was and I said "ok..." and the server looked at me funny and walked away. I found out their yogurt is homemade and so the drink is made entirely from scratch. I met a wise gentleman from India and his recommendation was to always order a vegetarian plate when eating at an Indian restaurant in the United States. The reason? Non-Vegetarian plates are seasoned to suit the American palate, whereas vegetarian dishes are mostly authentic to what you would find in India. So I applied his theory here at Himalayan, and you know what?! I thoroughly enjoyed the CHANA MASALA much more than the Chicken Tikka Madras dish! Prepared with garbanzo beans, potatoes, special herbs and spices, this was definitely my favorite. Clean, healthy, less creamy and more soupy. The only downside about our dine-in experience was that it was uncomfortably warm. Ever since hurricane's Erick and Flossie came to visit the state, Summer '19 in Honolulu has been extremely muggy. The dining areas at Himalayan are pretty much open-air with an enclosed dining area relying on trade winds to cool the space down; we were seated on the lanai overlooking 11th Ave and the community park and I was sweating like a piggy. Restaurant is upstairs, so a potential challenge for handicapped people and takes a second to find your way to get seated. Now that the negatives are out of the way, let me tell you about this place! The entire staff was very friendly, caring and funny at the right times. Yes it took some time to place our order, so I was starting to get irritated. Tonight was a date night with my wife so we ordered an appetizer (normally we don't; after 15 years of marriage, an appetizer makes dinner a date night). I HIGHLY recommend ordering an appetizer. 1) the one we had was great. 2) the appetizer and the main meal took a 'long' time to come but the app was really good, hot and fresh! We got the Himalayan Saag Dip and it was a good amount of food. Then our main meal Aloo Saag and Garlic Naan came out after a little wait. We got it with spice level 3 out of 10, and it was pretty spicy. **Buyer be warned their spice level leans hot!** Also we forgot to order rice, the meal does not come with rice. During our long wait they were very attentive with refilling our water. Also another table ordered an interesting drink and I asked one of the waiters what it was. Everything tasted amazing and authentic, we ordered chicken tikka curry made it extra spicy, rice, garlic naan, jalapeño naan, and paneer. This place is also BYOB for a limited time! For dessert we tried all flavors of gelato but I highly recommend the dragon fruit flavor! The service is also amazing. The waiters, waitresses, and the owner of the restaurant had amazing hospitality and made sure everyone in my party of 7 was having a great dining experience. Being a spice wimp, I went with the Kathmandu Shrimp Curry in mild, with the requisite $2 bowl of Indian rice. My friend went with something much spicier. We also got the samosas and the nan bread basket to share. The samosas were crisp and fantastic, the green sauce tasty and spicy. My shrimp curry was very red, and definitely had a little kick, even for mild. The rice and the nan bread kept everything nicely under control. Having sampled maybe 1/20th of what this place has to offer, I'll be back, and now I have another place I'd gladly bring my vegetarian friends (though, probably, they already know all about it). Soft drinks are served in the can with a glass of ice. The Indian tea looked good, if you're into that sort of thing. The curries were small (maybe 60% of Maharani size) and lacking meat for the price I paid. I love the food here but the price point doesn't make sense to me for the portions size... One thing to definitely get when dining in here is the Bread Basket. At $10, it is so reasonable with how much bread you get. It's enough for four people. We ended up taking half of it home. I really liked how vegetarian friendly this place is. They have a whole section on the menu that has a plethora of dishes to choose from. We will have to come back many more times to try them all. Reservations were a snap. It's best to call around 8 or 9 pm, because they are so busy before then. We had arrived early for our 8pm reservation and were able to seat us early, which was amazing. While my order was missing a few dishes and I didn't realize it until I got home (I should have double checked before leaving), I called the restaurant and they fixed the issue immediately. Not only did they provide the missing dishes, but had offered to hand deliver the missing dishes to me! I have never heard of a restaurant doing such a thing--especially one that I'm pretty sure doesn't do delivery as an in-house service. My family and I enjoyed the dishes that I had with my family while waiting and they did not disappoint in the least. I will be returning for the food and, despite the mixup, to vote with my dollars that this place is worth it. read more

I've been craving Nepali food ever since I was evacuated from Nepal and torn from my tantric yogi tibetan refugee host father on my birthday due to COVID (but that's another story) and I finally got to have some after more than nine months. Biggest thing to note: they DO NOT serve alcohol here, although they had a fully stocked bar just feet away from us. They are, however, BYOB with no corkage fee so be prepared.  THe restaurant is open air with pretty christmas lights and great ambiance. THe waiters seemed busy and, while one was curt, the other was terrific at helping us choose. They were out of momos and do not serve my three most favorite things I ate in Nepal: shapalep, lafing, and aloo dum, but that's ok. We got the appetizer set, which came with samosas, vegetable pakora, and eggrolls. It was all delightfully crunchy and went well with the sweet spicy and creamy minty sauces. Not greasy at all, but all kind of uniform in texture and taste. Still tasty though. We also got the bread set which came with regular and garlic naan and a paratha (I think). It was all hot and fluffy and the naan had a nice crunch. This was a huge portion and you definitely do not need to order this along with rice--you'll literally have carbs to eat for days. We also got daal bhat, aloo saag, and chicken bhuna, all medium spice. Medium was probably just under the limit for how spicy I can handle without needing to drink between each bite. The chicken bhuna was super tender and cut with a fork. It was creamy, garlicky, peppery, and spicy, like a heartier version of a local chicken curry. THe aloo saag was surprisingly the most spicy dish. It also had a creamy texture with soft potatoes and a generally warm and deep flavor. The daal reminded me of some of the food I had in nepal--similar texture with soft lentils and a thick savory sauce. Went great with rice. Overall this filled my craving, although I guess for my favorite dishes I'll have to travel somewhere far from here. read more

Had a very bad/sad experience and unfortunately will take this place out of my regular rotation. We ordered 4 things (3 curries, 1 naan) & each dish we received was wrong. When we asked the hostess about the dishes we received since we were so confused, she tried to convince us it was right, only admitting the mistake after we repeatedly pointed it out. Ended up just paying for one dish and the naan since they gave us a replacement & cancelled the rest when it became clear they could not deliver what we ordered. The dish we took home was gross, had little flavor, and tasted like bad, cheap tomato sauce (the butter chicken). Very sad about this. read more

I've really enjoyed Himalayan Kitchen in the past, however my latest experience was a step down from what I've had before. I've dined in here a few times and ordered takeout once; the takeout was the most recent experience. To start things off, my order was late. I originally confirmed a 5:15 pickup time, but the food was not ready until nearly 6. This is annoying when I've planned a specific time to bring home dinner for my family, and when I was clearly the first person there. I understand things happen, but it's a little frustrating anyway. Second, when the food was ready, the woman who took my payment removed her mask during the transaction. I've done a lot of takeout through the pandemic and this is the first time I've had this happen. This, above all else, needs to be adhered to, especially when in close contact. She was the only one I saw remove her mask, but in direct contact with a customer, not good. Finally, the food. Maybe it's because we did take out, because I've always enjoyed the food when dining in, but the most dominant flavor of the meal was salt. I was thirsty all night after this meal. Still, my lamb korma was tender, and my child's lentil curry was cooked to perfection. The naan is delicious, particularly the Himalayan Naan. Everything was just over-the-top salty. Call ahead to make sure they're open. Their hours say they're open all day, but at least on a Friday night they didn't open until 5. I don't think I'll be back until this whole pandemic thing goes away and we're dining out again. read more

This place is always serving great food with fast and friendly service! The Saag Dip, Spring Rolls, Tikka Masala and Lamb Saag are must haves! Honestly you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. This is also a great place to pick up food to take home as it travels well! The only downside is how hard it is to get to the rooftop location. read more
