Tried this place on a whim and were surprised with wonderful and tasty food. We had an appetizer mix that I was really surprised by. We also ordered a mix bread assortment that was very good too. If that's what fresh naan bread is like then I've been missing out for a long time. I also ordered a Chicken Tikka which arrived on a sizzling platter and was tasty and succulent. Be warned though the portions are generous and we definitely over ordered. I will be back, the food was great and the price was awesome. This place no longer has lunch buffet. When I first came to town 8 years ago they used to have one. Then it went away. Then I heard it came back and saw pics on yelp. So I decided to come again. No buffet. Was told by staff no more lunch buffet. This was disappointing. I miss the Indian lunch buffets from ny and nj. Also this back and forth, rising and then dashed hopes, is just too disappointing. This restaurant is open air. So even though you sit inside if there is no cross breeze it will be very hot. The service is friendly and solicitous. Plenty of water refills. One server dropped dishes empty dishes at least three separate times during the hour and half I was in here. The food is ok. We asked for medium spicy and got mild. Asked for hot sauce which was not just tobasco but some special blend. The food is fine but even the classic North Indian dishes taste different. Not quite enough tomato maybe or onions or the right kind of cream? Not enough spices? Usually after eating south Asian food my burps are the evidence of how flavorful the food was. My post meal burps were either non existent or too mild for me to notice. Not sure where to go anymore since Taj Mahal closes. Don't wanna wait in line for maharani. I have not been here for a few years and have always wanted to go back, so when I found myself in the area, I just had to eat here. I got a lamb and black lentil curry and my boyfriend got the butter chicken curry. His was super hot to me, even though it was only "medium" spice. Mine was perfect with no extra spice. We got garlic naan and some jasmine rice to eat with our curry - it was all just delicious. Had to take half home anyway! Parking is easy in the lot out back. Bathrooms were clean. Service was good. Ordered a dish on Uber eats. 15 dollars for an entree plus delivery and tip came out to 22 bucks. The size of this entree is ridiculously small, I feel robbed. My first taste of Himalayan Kitchen was superb and I've craved it twice since... but it hasn't lived up to my first time unfortunately. I ordered a takeout order the second time, and a couple dishes were not included. It was on me for not checking the bag before getting on the freeway. Third time, a family member did a take out order and this time I wanted to try the garlic naan with my curry. The naan was black and burnt and hardly had taste over the crisp. It wasn't able to satisfy the craving I had for this place. I'm hoping that the food improves to the first time I had it again soon. Had the BEST experience here yesterday. Wife and I were looking for dinner after surfing Diamond Head. I normally skip town because parking is bad but decided to gamble on Kaimuki. Parking is $3 but there were plenty open spots. There are also other restaurant options nearby. Had low expectations for good Indian Food after living in Los Angeles but this place surprised us! Probably best Indian we've ever had. Ingredients were clean and food wasn't over seasoned. Vegetarian Samosas, saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan and basmati rice are easy winners! We sat at the balcony overlooking the street. Service was excellent. Even gave us extra rice to finish off our leftover container of food. The owner is a genius for this. I wouldn't expect them to do this every time, but the gesture was much appreciated and goes a long way for excellent service. Will be back. This is our go-to Indian spot from now on. read more

I really want to give Himalayan Kitchen five stars but after our last visit, I just can't bring myself to do it. I want restaurants to succeed as we navigate our way through this pandemic, but in order to do that they need to meet the people halfway. If we're willing to patronize them we should be able to expect, at the very least, decent service and staff who follow safety protocols to ensure the health and wellness of their customers and fellow coworkers. It's not in my nature to give mediocre reviews but if it can help a business to improve and stay afloat during these challenging times, I'm happy to do so. And to the customers' credit, we are all hoping that our hard-earned dollars during such tough times will buy us a great dining experience where service and quality are always held to the highest standard. I hadn't eaten here in a long while but recalled that the food was very delicious. So I booked the reservation for our small group of friends in the outdoor dining area. When one of them had to cancel at the last minute, the others wanted to cancel and reschedule. I decided it would be rude to cancel with the restaurant at such late notice so I thought why not ask a couple of family members if they'd join me and they kindly obliged. I arrived a few minutes early and wasn't greeted or acknowledged, heck I didn't even know where to go to check in. A line began to form on the other end of the outdoor seating area so I walked over and stood there hoping that I could be seated soon. The wait in line was about 15 minutes and by the time I was seated, the rest of my party had arrived. Good so far. We were waited on by a server who had her mask under her chin. Not good = minus one star. She went on this way for a while. In her defense (yes, I know there's no excuse for not wearing a mask, especially in a public-facing occupation where you're handling food), she was friendly and poured us water soon after we were seated, but she was slammed and the only one serving a large number of tables for much of the time so maybe she was out of breath. I don't know, honestly. We had received our order of appetizers, the Himali Platter (Chicken Tikka Cubes and Samosa with Pakoras and Papadum) by then, but the wait for the entrees was a long road ahead = minus a second star. We decided to make the best of it and understood that the place was buzzing with customers so we enjoyed the company and hoped for water refills (thank goodness the cups are big!). We even saw some disgruntled customers leave because they received no service. But we stuck it out and in time were served our entrees that included Lamb Vindaloo and Eggplant Korma with Naan and Nepali Style Mixed Biryani (Seasoned Basmati Rice cooked with shrimp, lamb, chicken, vegetable, raisins and cashews). Some of the dishes were a tad on the salty side, but very tasty nonetheless. The server sans mask had by now been tending to other customers and a couple of polite young men, one of whom we assumed was the manager, stepped in to complete our service. There's a pay lot and if you have bad knees or difficulty climbing up and down a series of stairs, this is not the place for you. The outdoor seating is great if it's not raining and you don't want to be in an enclosed area with a lot of other people. If management is reading, I'd just like to add that it would be a good idea to hire more people when you know to expect many customers and enforce social distancing (some of the tables were not spaced a minimum of six feet apart and there were some obvious crowding issues. I left feeling like I had made the extra effort to be there only to find that the restaurant probably wouldn't have cared if I had cancelled. Other than that, I'd go back and give them another chance once they tighten up their safety protocols and hire more help. read more

well I've had good experiences here years prior but upon my last visit 6/8/23 I ordered 3 items 1 never came and the other was wrong. it was a really slow night.....Also they lost there liquor license so BYOB. BUT WORST OF ALL it was infested with rats. during my date and meal i counted atleast 8 large rats running around the dining area and literally hopping over guests feet as they were sitting eating. They were very tame and I can tell are used to hanging out around everyone eating. I had one make his way under my table (my date did not see thankfully) but I did have a big roach crawl up my leg. never in my life have I seen a worse pest situation not even in the filthiest of third world countries. Went to get take out. walked in waited at the cashiers table, waiting for someone to help me, I was ignored for 10 minutes, while the wait staff went around me and helped others that had ordered before me or by phone. I do understand that COVID wipe downs of previously used menus are important, but they should not take precedence over creating a welcoming business. I've really enjoyed Himalayan Kitchen in the past, however my latest experience was a step down from what I've had before. I've dined in here a few times and ordered takeout once; the takeout was the most recent experience. To start things off, my order was late. I originally confirmed a 5:15 pickup time, but the food was not ready until nearly 6. This is annoying when I've planned a specific time to bring home dinner for my family, and when I was clearly the first person there. I understand things happen, but it's a little frustrating anyway. Second, when the food was ready, the woman who took my payment removed her mask during the transaction. I've done a lot of takeout through the pandemic and this is the first time I've had this happen. This, above all else, needs to be adhered to, especially when in close contact. She was the only one I saw remove her mask, but in direct contact with a customer, not good. Finally, the food. Maybe it's because we did take out, because I've always enjoyed the food when dining in, but the most dominant flavor of the meal was salt. I was thirsty all night after this meal. Still, my lamb korma was tender, and my child's lentil curry was cooked to perfection. The naan is delicious, particularly the Himalayan Naan. Everything was just over-the-top salty. Call ahead to make sure they're open. Their hours say they're open all day, but at least on a Friday night they didn't open until 5. I don't think I'll be back until this whole pandemic thing goes away and we're dining out again. read more

I asked them if they had halal meat because we're a Muslim family and they were so confused at what I was asking even though it says online that they serve halal food. This has been on our list of favorite special occasion restaurants for at least a decade. The best Indian food you can get on island - I can't believe I haven't reviewed it before! My usual go-tos are the Chicken Tikka Masala (Medium spice if by myself, Mild if I'm sharing with my son) with basmati rice, plain naan bread for getting all that delicious sauce, often starting with veggie samosas or adding on aloo saag if with a group. But there is nothing here I have tried that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed! Since I am with my mom this time and we are going to the theater after and can't take leftovers, we are sharing the lamb tikka masala, rice, and the paneer kafta(?) - cheese stuffed naan. It was amazing as anticipated! The Tikka Masala sauce is one of my favorite things to eat anywhere. I will stick to my plain naan though as the paneer wasn't a strong enough flavor to compete with the sauce. Still tasty! Would be better maybe as an appetizer, though the cheese is filling so... We were seated, greeted, food in our bellies, and paid in 40 minutes, which was awesome since we had mentioned being on a tight schedule! Love it! read more

I finally got around to trying this restaurant! I had a craving for some spiced curry something! I did order through Uber eats for delivery. This does make a big difference as we all know. Especially for fried items. Delivery took a while so I won't hold it against the restaurant! First off, I'm not that experienced with this type of food. Yes curries I love, flatbreads, spices and dips that most of us are probably familiar with. But most of the menu is new to me. The saag, made with spinach and cheese, was delicious. I ordered garlic naan (flatbread) to go with it. Omg. So good. The bread was somehow still hot and fresh with a buttery garlicky taste like the best fluffy melty pita I've ever had. The dip was still hot and reminded me of luau or spinach dip with bits of soft cheese. And a warm spice as you eat it. Yum. The platter I tried mostly disappointed. I wanted a dish with various choices. Chicken tikka was a Little disappointing. Kind of tough. Pakoras were new to me, fritters with spice and vegetables, hahahaha actually reminded me of vegetable tempura with shredded veggies through it. Samosas were not good. Again, probably sat too long. Extremely heavy and greasy. Papadum was like a large tortilla. Good for dipping in the sauces. Came with a green chimichurri like sauce and another red one like a very mild salsa. Forget the papadum and order more naan. Large portions, good to share! I'd splurge on extra sauce for the next day! Next time id like to try dining in, or maybe to go, but curries, grilled and stewed items will probably travel better! And sorry, prices in the first pic aren't recent. So saddened by today's experience. We've been coming here for years. Tonight we arrived just after 5 pm and the food arrived after 7 pm and after two tables who came in after us received their full 8 course meals paid and left. Hey, but they brought us 2 samosas to comp ... yeah, I'm diabetic and can't eat them. This meal should have been partially or completely comped. On two previous occasions they couldn't open because their staff didn't show up. We love the food but recently the orders have also been missing key ingredients. There is no excuse for this kind of "service". Never again. So sad. read more

Friendly staff all around. It's a nice rooftop setting we were seated outside by the balcony area which was nice. I'm not as adventurous so normally I'll stick to my usuals. Glad my friend reserved this place and will definitely be back. We started off with appetizers our server recommended the momo and spring roll. The momo was delicious. Our entree consist of Butter Chicken, Goa shrimp, we also got some sort of fried rice (can't remember name) , a must to get naan bread plain and garlic. Whether you like your food spicy or mild just let your server know. Glad we had a server that recommended what to order we probably would have not know what to order. Desserts was sold out except the dragon fruit lychee sorbet and some kind of ginger gelato so we got both. Did not care so much for the ginger gelato however the dragon fruit was alright. read more

I am writing after my second lunch visit while in the neighborhood for other activities on my own. The restaurant has a nice mix of inside and outside table options and I have been able to get in during the lunch hour each time with plenty of open tables remaining. That said, there are always a consistent group of diners so it feels comfortable being at a table alone without standing out too much. Each time, I asked for recommendations and tried new dishes I had never had before. Today Surhe recommended the okra and the onion kulcha naan. I ordered medium spice (5 on scale of 1-10). The spice was perfect, just a little bit on the heat side though easy to enjoy without burning. The okra dish itself is extremely flavorful and has an interesting texture. Surhe was eager to hear what I thought and I said it was very good and just different than what I was used to with curries. He quickly responded and said he would bring me something so I could have a "gravy". I said no need and he said he wanted to. He brought me some tikka masala sauce. That was very kind though I was truly enjoying the okra as is. The sauce was great too though. It went so well with the okra. All of the naans have been great too. Service is spot on. Surhe is very conscientious and thoughtful with making recommendations. He also expresses a feeling of concern by checking in to make sure it meets or exceeds my expectations. I appreciate the guidance as it is enjoyable to try new foods. The only downside about the experience is the cost for lunch. It was $23.46 (with tax) for one person to have the okra, a side of basmati rice and the onion naan. I had some leftovers to take away, though not equal to half the amount. Had a craving for curry on a cool night. Himalayan Kitchen! We haven't been for awhile and was pleasantly surprised to see it expanded. The outside area is bigger. Even though we didn't have ressies, we were seated right away. We opted to sit inside but next to the railing. Took a bit for our orders to come because they were swamped. Our server was so apologetic. But then the food arrived and it was so worth the wait! Being that we didn't eat all day, our eyes were bigger than our stomach and we ordered waay too much! AND since I'm on a low salt diet (sucks big time!) they were able to make the dishes no added salt. Thumbs up guys! So we had... Garlic naan, kaya naan (filled with apricots, raisins and nuts -we usually have that for dessert), lamb biriyani, lamb bhuna, and chicken tikka madras. Oh, and mango lassi!!! Broke da mout! This is kind of a hard place to find! Also, I'm disabled, and this is not a friendly place for disabled people like me. The steps going up to the restaurant are very steep and those who have a hard time walking will not be able to enjoy this restaurant. That being said, I made it up the stairs and we were led to a table on the outside balcony facing the street. I'm very happy to see the many vegan options on this menu since I was dining with my vegan friend, and we decided to order 2 pieces of roti, some rice, daal makhani (black lentils and kidney beans) and eggplant tofu korma. I asked our server if they could make it spicy, and he said they had spice levels from 1 to ten. We opted for level 10 on both of our dishes. Wow this was spicy! A good kind of spicy though, and we enjoyed our meals very much. Waters were filled up regularly, and service was excellent. Parking is behind the restaurant in the huge space shared by many of the surrounding establishments, and only cost us 2.25. Our server saw that we'd finished both our dishes and asked us where we were from. I'm guessing not too many people can handle a spice level 10! Despite the ghetto-looking area near the entrance, the evening atmosphere upstairs at the restaurant is low key fancy, and dogs are allowed to sit with you on the patio. The staff loves dogs and will come talk to them and offer them Akita-sized water bowls. It was raining quite annoyingly the night we went, but the patio umbrellas were ample enough to keep at least the humans dry. Big ol' Bloss got just a little wet on her back. The food is tasty and healthy, with plenty of veggies. I ordered the Saag Meat, a spinach and lamb dish. In the photo you can see Breezeley staring longingly at it. At least he got to try some of the jasmine rice! He's a picky eater, but he gobbled it up. He wished he could also try some of the garlic naan, but sadly, garlic would kill him since he's a dog. The food was delicious, but the service as dismal. I gave the waitress my credit card to pay the bill, she gave it back for signature without the card. She avoided eye contact and I waited for 15 minutes to get her attention, then she insulted me by saying, "check the folder for your card," to which I replied that I had, which is why I needed her help. She returned another 10 minutes later, asking "is this it?" It was, but it made me wonder how many others she had. The lanai view is beautiful! I had eaten here before and was satisfied. This time I ordered the steamed fish with coconut milk and spices as stated in the menu. The fish came 30 minutes after my friends all got their food. It was very dry and not like any other steamed fish I've had before. The coconut milk sauce was on the side and not the actual sauce that was served with the fish, so the menu didn't capture what the dish was very well. Because of the lateness and the lack of clarity, the owner/manger compensated me and gave me a free bread that was very tasty. PS: don't eat in their "outside"/entry area. After ordering naan take-out here a bunch of times (they do have the best naan on the island), I decided to finally have a sit-down meal here. We only preserved the chicken tikka masala, rice, and lamb naan. The tikka masala was not bad, having more of a tomato flavor than, say, Maharani or Taj Mahal. The portion is rather small if you plan on sharing, but for a single person it suffices. The rice was fragrant and delicious; I could have just eaten this. The mild flavor of the rice was a nice compliment to the chicken. And the naan was very good; just the right amount of meat and crispness. The service overall was great. We had several people check on us to ask how our food was, and they were very attentive overall. Granted, we came near closing and there weren't many patrons, so I'm not sure how the service would be on a busy night. But we will definitely come back to try other menu items, so perhaps we will see then. read more

Food quality, 10/10 Ample parking in the metered parking lot. Street parking available. But... They are inconsistent about answering the phone, so sometimes you need to go in to order. They don't have easy to access hours online or via phone, so it's hard to count on them being open - even for dinner. When I order via third party delivery or pick up apps, it cancels about 1/4 of the time and says the restaurant hasn't responded to the order request - even when they're open. I'm pretty confused by their take out service. Seems like that's an easy way to stay profitable, and they miss so many orders. Still, I wouldn't go through the hassle if it wasn't worth it. Ever notice how food tastes better when you're with the right company? On my first several visits to Himalayan Kitchen, the food sparkled as much as the conversation. Some tips to ensure a good experience at Himalayan Kitchen: Make reservations. I have an Open Table account and was able to change the reservations when the count kept increasing. Second, parking is easy in the metered lot off 11th Ave if you go at the right time on a Friday night. After 6 p.m. and it can get a bit tight and you'll be frustrated. Third, if possible, choose the patio dining or the covered area adjacent to the patio. The tradewinds keep you cool and you can leave the restaurant without taking home the aromas on your clothing and hair Next, bring your own alcohol! The restaurant doesn't charge a corkage fee, yay. Now the ordering is really up to your tastes...I'm partial to vegetarian dishes, curries and lots of carbs! Some of my faves: Papadums, thin light crispy crackers not unlike a lavosh; Samosas, those delicious golden-fried purses filled with curried potatoes and peas; Chicken tikka masala, rich and hearty with a lingering heat (if you order medium); Chicken vindaloo, a lighter tomato-ey sauce; Vegetable biryani, a flavorful rice dish dotted with fresh cut veggies; Naan -- try it plain, garlic or the Himalayan, stuffed with spinach and chicken! For dessert, a must try is the four-spice chocolate ice cream. It is IN-CR-EDIBLE!! The burst of cardamom and anise with milky chocolate is a feast for the senses. On this last visit, we chose to start with it as an appetizer. Er, an amuse bouche, if you will. As my friend says, what's the point in waiting for dessert when you know you want it now? It didn't start off too well because they don't have a (current) liquor license so we trekked over to Tamura's to buy a bottle of pinot gris from Alsace. We ordered the Himalayan Platter (delicious), the Hariyo salad (good), garlic and Keema Naan bread (both great), the lamb Bhuna (very good), vegetable curry (creamy goodness), and the Kathmandu chicken chili, a dish one of my friends said is a "must have". We ordered all dishes medium and all were great. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish. The place was packed ... Himalayan Kitchen is a roof top, neighborhood restaurant with a large menu of similar flavor profiles running through it. On a nice night, the outdoor seating is a relaxed place to enjoy the night sky and BYOB (their liquor license is only for inside the restaurant). For appetizers I would skip both the Papadum and the Momo. The Papadum is a salted wafer, it's crisp, and light, but I wouldn't order it again. The Momo is basically an dumpling, but a Chinese restaurant would make it better. The different Naans weren't great either, on the small side and lacking that crusty-chewy texture you want, I'm guessing they pulled them out of the tandoor a little too early. The Mixed Tandoori Plate was pretty good, all of the meat was tender, 4 chunks of chicken, 2 pieces of lamb, and 1 piece of fish. The Curries come in small bowls and are tasty, though small for the price. We liked the Lamb Vindaloo which is spicy with small bits of potatoes and the Dal Chicken Tekka Mahani which was heavy on the chicken, sprinkled with lentils, in a sauce finished with cream. The servers are friendly enough, but overall, food comes out slowly and service is inattentive. You need to flag them if you want water or a serving spoon, and watch our server do a few other tasks first before maybe remembering to come back. If you're coming here for dinner, bring some good company to pass the time, be patient, and if it's a nice night sit outside. read more

For Kaimuki the atmosphere is great with indoor and outdoor seating. It's almost like a little mini vacation away from the hustle and bustle of everyday without the tourists!! LOL The food was surprisingly good. I would like to come back and try more dishes but tonight the eggplant dish we had was really good. It was almost like Aline it could be an appetizer to spread in the Naan or even fresh vegetables. I love eggplants so I'm a little biased, because anything eggplant I love. Anytime my friends and I go to Indian good we always get the Lamb Vindaloo and Fish Masala. The Lamb was delicious and the fish was alright for me. I believe it was Mahi Mahi. I prefer a lighter fish. The sauce was really good though. The Naan isn't too huge which is alright cuz you can always order another. However, there are times when you just want to see a larger crusty Garlic Naan. Make sure to ask the bottom be crunchy. For me and my friend that's how we love it. For garlic lovers ask for more garlic! Yummy! As always Naan is great with all the sauces. What's also nice is the ability to order a small bowl of rice. That was awesome because sometimes you want a little but not a whole dish. So for that I give that a 4 star along with the ample parking. read more

I've come here a couple times now for dinner. Himalayan kitchen has a great variety of curries and has a nice ambiance while being located in my fav k town (kaimuki). Parking can get pretty horrendous in the shared lot, and the service can leave much to be expected, however, in good company, this place is pretty delightful. I highly recommend Himalayan kitchen if you love curry. They have all different kinds of curries and it smells absolutely amazing every time I walk by. The servings look a little small for the price, but if you come with a bigger group of people, you can order several curries and go on a little curry tasting adventure around the world. The naan breads are also very delicious and soak up the curry well. Another perk? It's byob and Tamuras is just a block away! The service is slow, so bring your drinks and your good friends and expect a lengthy dinner. The ambiance is nice, kinda dim, but nice and open air. Because it's kind of dark and you have to walk up stairs, you have I be extra careful to watch your step. The food is delicious, but you have to like curry! We decided to eat at the Himalayan Kitchen for a taste of Nepalese cuisine. We especially enjoyed the flavorful Chicken Saag, that had fresh spinach and chicken cooked with ginger and garlic, the best. The Mixed Tandoori Grill, composed of chicken tikka, sekh kabob, lamb seakwa,and shrimp grilled in the tandoori oven was appetizing. The Chana Aloo composed of garbanzo beans and potatoes with a touch of tomatoes with mild spices was good. We were expecting another flavor with a yellow saffron spice that our friend used to make, with potatoes and chickpeas. Overall, we had a terrific lunch and the service was exceptional, our waiter was warm and friendly, and offered great hospitality. We also liked how the chef, brought out our Mixed Grill plate that was sizzling straight from the oven to our table. We were pleasantly surprised when we checked in on YELP, and that we got a 5% discount off our order. We had a nice experience. read more
