There's something funny that they put in the water in WNY. I don't know what it is. Still, it's something because people here are...nice. I don't get it. Granted, I've probably spent way too much time in Boston and maybe I'm used to living surrounded by mercurial misanthropists (becoming one myself), but really - nice people. NICE PEOPLE. And strangely enough, one of my warmest welcomes to this place was at the Hillview. I had breakfast (or my interpretation thereof) here every morning during my Buffalo Tour '09. The first day it was without my local friends, and the server covering my table was well, nice. She smiled. She was friendly. She went out of the way to help me figure out where I could catch a band I liked and maybe take in a Monster Truck Show (I've never seen one). (This level of er, niceness was unexpected and at first my Boston-hardened brain froze up. Did not compute. The only experience I can liken it to was the time in college where I had to speak Urdu in front of a room full of native speakers and the only thing I could remember how to say was, "I see an ink pot." My point here is that though I'm sure it seemed that I should be wearing Velcro shoes and a helmet, the staff was still super nice. Yes, nice.) The menu was insane - they can pretty much cater to anyone's taste. No one blinked when I ordered my usual breakfast that consists mostly of side dishes, and I was actually *asked* if I wanted onions in my hash browns (a resounding "no," as it's known in some circles that onions are used by the devil in his hellish home decor; the deviiiiiiilll! I think it may be in place of potpourri.) They buttered my bagel before I could put cream cheese on it - while this may cause a stroke in the weak, it is a tasty, tasty kind of aneurysm. I'm talking diner decadence. They don't cut corners. The next day I came in with a group of folks who live in the area. Different server this time, and she knew the names and predilections of my friends, finishing their sentences as they ordered. With me and my companion she was perfectly pleasant, not shooting me a glare when I ordered a grilled cheese with a cup of fruit for breakfast (these guys make a mean grilled cheese - it reminded me of the lunches Mom made me before Hebrew school when I was a kid). Everyone else seemed perfectly pleased with their meals. It was the same thing the next day. Same friendly server who treated the four of us like old friends. This time I had blueberry covered waffles, but only because I got flustered when it was my turn to order and I couldn't think of anything. Still, the waffles were good enough that the Weight Watchers devotee next to me kept snagging bites. The food here is good, don't get me wrong. But the staff here exude the kind of warmth that I've seen in many WNYers (enough to throw me off balance), and ultimately this is why I'll be back. PS. Mediocre. The food is fine, about what you would expect. But apparently the staff just doesn't care about their patrons. We went for brunch on a Sunday. I ordered corned beef & hash, and my fiancé ordered a sub. The waitress asked my fiancé if he wanted lettuce and tomato. He said yes to lettuce, no to tomato. She asked if he wanted mayo or oil. He replied, oil. The food came out pretty quickly. My home fries were cold. The portion of the corned beef & hash was pretty small (although ok for the price) and mushy. My fiancé's sub, sure enough, had lettuce AND tomato, and was lathered in mayo. No sign of oil. When the waitress came over to check on things I told her she should let the kitchen staff know that the home fries were cold. She made a face as if to acknowledge that they messed up, but did not apologize or offer to bring out a fresh order. That was the end of that; no dollar off the bill or anything to apologize. So, we won't be back. We usually go to ForestView and just decided to switch it up. We will stick with ForestView where they do a much better job with food and service. read more

We used to go here all the time when I was younger, and then we moved away. Now we come back to the area once a week to take care of mom and stop for breakfast, what a change! This place has been totally remodeled and looks beautiful. I love the decor. The wait staff is always friendly and the owner is almost always here. He's a really great guy. The menu is pretty big and we usually get breakfast which is your usual fare. The omelets are really good and so big I can never finish. I have had lunch here once or twice, and the soup is so delicious. Tastes homemade to me. Burgers were juicy and tasted good. A little more well done than I asked for, but still good. It's definitely an upgrade from what it was in the 80's and 90's. Must try this place for comfort food! read more

Make sure you confirm the price on the receipt. The owners are very sketchy and manipulative and will charge you more even if it's an extra dollar. This has happened more than once. I went to meet a friend here for breakfast. The food was good, we both had omelettes which were hot and tasted fine. The waitress was fine after she initially wasn't very pleasant. My friend was already seated and when I asked for a menu the waitress threw one on the table without a word. That said, I won't be back. The hostess, whom I believe may be an owner was just plain nasty. We did not ask for anything special, just ate and chatted. We were fairly close the hostess station/cash register and she was watching over at us as if we annoyed her. When I went to pay, she asked if I left a tip at the table or was adding it on my card payment. I said adding it on. She then asked how much. I have honestly never had that experience before. She really caught me off guard. Did she think we were going to stuff the waitress?!! No smile, totally unpleasant! There are many other places I can get the same food I got here. You would think with the decline in business restaurants would be happy to have customers and show a little appreciation instead of copping an attitude. I have not been to Hillview since they remodeled. I was pleasantly surprised when my wife and I walked in. The entire restaurant has a bright comfortable atmosphere. Love it! We were seated immediately by a friendly, smiling hostess. We sat in a large comfortable booth. Perhaps a bit too comfy. I settled in and had a heck of a time getting out. The menu is extensive and has enough alternatives to satisfy every taste. You surely will find something to your liking. I don't know about you but every now and then I look at a menu and nothing grabs my attention. There are numerous choices at Hillview but I just couldn't find anything that slapped me across the face! Sooooooo, when that happens, I always resort to my standard fall back item. Fried Chicken an fries. Yes, I know!,, previously frozen and comes in a box of assorted miscellaneous mystery pieces. However, it is pretty hard to screw up! Tonight I gave up trying to make a right decision and fell back to my staple. Hey.....I just love fried chicken anyway! My wife opted for the usual restaurant fare -- a club sandwich. She and the waitress, who was smiling, friendly, accommodating and good, spent several minutes building each level of the club sandwich. Great, order in! BTW they only serve beer and wine if you are so inclined. Before our dinners came the waitress returned to tell me they were out of fried chicken!!! HOW THE H€££ do you run out of an item that stores forever frozen in your freezer. Give me a break, now back to the menu. UGH!!! I threw in the towel and ordered a roast beef on kimelwick with two chicken fingers and fries. Things are starting to slide! Our dinners came. My wife's club looked great but one of the slices of toast was burned! Burned! Why would you continue to prepare and then serve a club sandwich with a piece of burned toast? Burned bread stinks! How can a cook, and I use the term loosely, not smell or see the burned, black toast? Why did the waitress bother to serve it? The waitress, when we pointed it out, offered to have another one prepared. My "beef on wick" came on a plate with two chicken fingers and a pile of seasoned French fries. Whoever concocted the first seasoned fry.....I hate you! Seasoned fries stink, I will season my own fries. What is wrong with plain potato French fries? Waitresses out there -- Please tell your customers that you use seasoned French fries!! Some of us are purists. Also on my plate was a large slice of a dill pickle. I guess they needed something green on the plate. My less than average sliced beef was on a day old roll. With each bite some of the salt and caraway seeds stuck to my fingers as the roll was wet. Wet with what? I can only assume ... Perhaps the microwave to freshen it up? It was not gravy or juice from the meat as there wasn't any used. Why not? You always use juice or gravy! Frankly, that makes the sandwich. Oh well nuf said. Brought the meat home for the Shih Tzu, he loves it when we get lousy food when we go out for dinner. As you enter Hillview, you walk past one of those six foot tall round desert cases. This one filled with what looks like delicious deserts. We did not find out! I don't often find a breakfast that I think is outstanding, but this place did it! They call it an Eggsadia - like a casadia but for breakfast. The filling (eggs, sausage, peppers onion, cheese) was hot and delicious. The shell was slightly crispy which just put this over the top. I am definitely going back for another one of these soon. My husband opted for a Chicken Finger Sub which he also enjoyed. Nice place, atmosphere, food and prices. read more

My Dad has been coming here for many years and loves the owner, Milton and his staff. Wanting to take my cousin, visiting from out of town, somewhere where the food is good and fresh and enough to eat, I did not feel like playing roulette out there and headed for the Hillview. My cousin had a lunch wrap and I opted for the chicken souvloki and eggs. Our server was excellent and the food arrived quickly for the amount of crowd in there and temperature and taste of our food just perfect. I will continually mention this restaurant to people wondering where they can get a decent meal for a decent price. The saddest thing is when you eat so much you don't get to have the gorgeous desserts they have on display right in front. Save room, it's worth it, and the leftovers are perfect for lunch later. read more

Staff there is arrogant, We get alot of take out... so made the suggestion to the lady I picked my food up from that they should be part of skip the dishes so we can order food and have it delivered ... Came on a day where there were modified hours but NO SIGNS were up indicating this and none of the staff members told our party this. Waitress hovered over us until it was time to closed. Not everyone finished their food and we weren't offered any to go containers. It would have been a different story if we were told they were closing when they were when we arrived so we could have either tried to make food decisions faster or have gone to a different establishment. This one is dedicated to my god mother - may she rest in peace. Apparently this was a favorite of her and my uncle when she was alive and I can understand why. A very simple diner run by a humble Greek family and everything is very good. All kinds of simple breakfast/lunch and dinner comfort foods with a few Greek items mixed in. Portions are huge, and prices are cheap. Service is excellent and food arrived quickly, even though they were rather busy. Now this is a great concept. Although we went there for breakfast, they don't limit the menu. If you want a Gyro (as I did) at 10:30 in the morning, then you are gonna get it. I was pleasantly surpirsed that beef was offered, as the lamb gyro's tend to gross me out with a weird after taste as I typically notice. Dill dressing was perfect and traces of dill were very subtle. I hate when I'm picking it out of my teeth. Served with French fries and side salad. When I went to the bathroom I pondered on grabbing the quarter that wouldn't flush. Then pondered some more on how long it's been sitting there, and why it won't flush with the water. I determined it may be a candid camera game waiting for someone to pick at which I thankfully chose not to do. I mean I don't need a quarter that bad - although my Grammy always taught me to pick up coins as you'd be amazed at how much you collect. I didn't have it in me and I further wondered how long I kept my cousin waiting by herself. So if you are interested in picking at the quarter or maybe just enjoying some home cooked meals with a greek tip, this is a nice place to check out. Not great, but not bad either. Just a run of the mill Greek diner that's decorated very nicely. It's nice and clean and the service is friendly and efficient. Two of us shared a pleasant breakfast here this past Sunday. The coffee was hot and readily refilled and the pancakes were huge, fluffy, and warm enough to melt the butter (yeah.... served in packets.... nothing's perfect, I guess). I've eaten at Hillview a number of times. The service is always exceptional and the food is good. It is great for a quick in and out or if you want to stay and catch up with an old friend. My mom hosted a bridal shower here in one of the back rooms. The owner was incredibly accommodating and the service was fantastic! The guests enjoyed the food and had great things to say about their overall experience at the shower. I would recommend Hillview to anyone. read more

I would like to begin by saying the restaurant at first looks appealing! As we were seated we walked by several empty- filthy tables. It was late at night so I excused this, believing they may be understaffed or just hadn't gotten to the " clean up" yet. Waitress comes to table in a timely manner. Ok good start. Proceeds to ask for our drink ( and since it was late our complete order because we knew what we wanted) order. She returns approximately 2 mins later to ask what we would like? She didn't even remember 2 mins ago, so somethings wrong here.... she was definitely either drunk or high. Mind you we were THE ONLY CUSTOMERS IN THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT! Ok so things are taking a bad turn. Brings our food, soup & a cheeseburger deluxe. After about 5 bites, we rose from the table & left to go to another restaurant. Inedible! Frozen, paper thin patty! Soup so salty & It only tasted like oil! I simply dont understand these mistakes. Competence! And 2 of the easiest items on the menu ? HORRENDOUS!!! AND for clarity waitresses name was TERRY!! Three stars for service, the food was ok at best but the girl serving me was very nice. I didn't like the fact that they sat me at a table set for two people and then left the other setting there while I ate. Did they do that before I got there as well? I was a little disappointed in the polish sausage it was beyond greasy I know sausage is supposed to be a little greasy but this stuff was swimming in it. I have been to this restaurant twice in my life, and I must say my rating has nothing to do with the food or my waitresses service. The owners of this restaurant are completely manipulative. The first time I went, my boyfriend and I grabbed a quick bite and headed out. They don't let you pay at the table and the waitress said only the owners can swipe cards, so we went to pay and told them the tip we want to put on the card. Not once has this happened to me, but twice now. The 1st time being the male owner and the 2nd time being the woman, put more money than stated for the tip. It was only a few more extra dollars, but still very frustrating. For my 2nd visit, hoping last time was just a mistake, the woman owner swiped my card and covered my total on the receipt while I was signing and when I asked for a receipt, she got very nervous and gave me an unitemized receipt. She too added extra dollars to my said tip amount. This has also happened to my friends in the past. This restaurant is a common spot for elderly customers, and I just know they are being taken advantage of. This place makes me sick and I will NEVER be back. This is also my first review i've ever written and I feel it is completely necessary. I am sorry for any customers and their staff- for that the owners are completely sly. read more

Came here for a late night dinner with my family. I felt so sorry for the two waitresses who were overwhelmed and alone with at least 9 tables full. Many people were not being served and at one point, a couple was seated at a dirty table and a man with a special diet was given the wrong order. So service was bad, food was even worse. This restaurant is amazing. Decor is beautiful and updated. Friendly service. I had the eggs benedict which I always have and it was the best I have ever had in my life. First time there. Place was dirty. Hanging lights over our table were covered in cobwebs. Plastic greenery and window ledges were covered in dust. Wallpaper peeling in bathrooms. Food was just average. Server never returned to see if everything was ok. Restaurant is very dark. Handicapped sign is buried behind bushes. I left the tip on the table but on cashing out girl asked if I wanted to put a tip on the bill. No one should ask for a tip. Will not return. read more

We've been to the Hillview quite a few times the breakfast is really good I love their breakfast sausage. The menu is pretty large I like the chicken souvlaki. Only complaint I've had is the one time they seated my son and I at the bar near where the kitchen is there seemed to be too much complaining amongst the employees really didn't enjoy that. read more

Dinner was horrible with my sandwich that I ordered was supposed to get either coleslaw or a choice of potato I did not get either. Portabello sandwich was over cooked and was supposed to have peppers on it just a slab of mozzarella cheese which sat under the lights to long. Last 4 times we have came here they got at lease 1 thing wrong with our order and then today we came for supper and they got 4 out of 5 dishes wrong forgetting to even make a dish and when they fixed one of the subs they ended up putting a broken toothpick in my 7 year olds sub which ended up in her mouth! Beautiful, upscale interior with LOTS of space. Waitresses are very nice, sociable, efficient. Food.....another story. We stopped for breakfast on the way home from errands. My favorite Eggs Benedict was a let down. The home fries were TERRIBLE.....no flavor and the onion was just like thrown in as an afterthought.....raw. How can home fries be tasteless? However, same thing with the Hollandaise.....NO FLAVOR! Hollandaise should be heavy on the lemon. Only ate half the order. Hubby had an omelet without complaint but to me it just looked chain "restaurantish". He also only ate half the toast......I mean toast, what can you do wrong with toast? Our server was new and nervous but she was so nice! I noticed that the other servers there were bullying her in a since And the other servers had no personality we weren't greeted with a friendly smile it seemed like it was a bother we were there. It is either hit or miss here. For me, its usually every other visit. Lol. One time every thing is perfect.. Next visit.. No refills, out of dipping sauce for sweet potato fries and portion was smaller than times before getting same thing. I still go back because I enjoy the atmosphere, even when they are out of the dipping sauce for sweet potato fries, or it's not made the same way, or when my servers smells like ciagarettes.
